TC West soccer opens up with win

LUDINGTON — Traverse City West had to travel south to find a green patch of grass to play on, but it was well worth it.

The Titans opened the girls soccer season with a 4-0 victory at Ludington.

Goals were scored by Kara Birch, Grace Guba, Marissa Wood-Sternburgh and Karina Chouinard.

Senior forward/defender Erica Olson, playing in her first game in over a year after missing last season due to surgery, had an assist for West, which opens the Big North Conference slate Tuesday at home against Alpena. Defender Kathryn Ward also had an assist.

Emmy Entz made seven saves for the shutout in net.

The Titans also won the junior varsity contest 4-0 against Ludington, scoring all of their goals in the first half.

Maddisen Coil scored a hat trick and Chelsea White had a goal and an assist. Sydney Johnson added two assists.

Alyse Tucker and Taylor Reed split time in net, sharing the shutout.

BASEBALL

TC Central 18 0
Corunna 13 3

Kevin Krantz had a two-run homer and a grand slam to lead TC Central to an 18-13 victory over Corunna.

Casey Lundy, Ian Prokes, Derek Diekman (double) and Jordan Hall (double) each added two hits for the Trojans (1-3). Zac Zoellner was the winning pitcher with Krantz picking up the save.

Corunna won the nightcap 3-0 in a game called after five innings due to darkness. Hall took the loss, despite allowing just four hits.

The Trojans are scheduled to play at Petoskey on Tuesday, weather permitting.

TRACK

TC West girls fifth at Rocket Invite

Brittany Klug finished second in the 100 hurdles (17.68) and Elise Carolan second in the 1600 (5:36.9) as Traverse City West took fifth in the Rocket Invitational at Muskegon Reeths-Puffer.

Hudsonville won the meet with 116 points. West had 60.

Placing third for West: Anne Prisk, Jennifer Bragiel, Erin Holstad and Veronica Asch in the 3200 relay (10:36.5); Asch in the 800 (2:40); Margeaux Raymond in the high jump (4'10”); and Sarah VanCoonis in the pole vault (7'6”).

Taking fourth: Kara Pohlman in the 300 hurdles (53.5); Raymond, Prisk, Lillia Favela and Carolan in the 1600 relay (4:30.7); Sierra Breithaupt in the long jump (15'71/2”); and Ashley Leitner in the pole vault (7').

West will open its Big North Conference dual meet season Tuesday at Petoskey.
