Glads' tennis opens season with win over Elks

Traverse City St. Francis swept the doubles matches en route to a 7-1 season-opening victory over Elk Rapids on Saturday.

The Gladiators also won three of four singles matches, with Ben Schippers (No. 2, 6-4, 7-5), John Jurkas (No. 3, 6-1, 6-2) and Dan Fisher (No. 4, 6-3, 7-5) racking up wins.

Aaron Mayes won No. 1 singles 6-3, 6-0 for the Elks.

The Glads received doubles wins from the duos of Bryan Currie and Mike Kowalski (No. 1, 6-0, 6-0), Mike Miller and Brian Franck (No. 2, 6-2, 6-1), David Eddington and Cam McCardel (No. 3, 6-1, 6-1) and Ryan White and Ben Wheelock (No. 4, 6-3, 6-4).

TC Central edges West in JV tennis tournament

The Traverse City Central Black junior varsity edged the TC West JVs 19-18 in Saturday's four-team junior varsity tournament at Central.

The Titans captured four flights. Zak Hueghy (No. 2) and Andy Bezotte (No. 4) won in singles, while Dane Deemer/Dan Gotshall (No. 2) and Trevor Kirt/Stuart Bentley (No. 4) posted doubles victories.
