Liberty open with victory

EAST JORDAN Helene Dryden got her season and her team off to a fast start on Monday, scoring five first-half goals to lead the Traverse City Liberty to a 7-2 soccer win over East Jordan.
Also contributing for the Liberty were Erin Collins (goal, assist), Julie Doherty (goal, assist), Chelsea English (2 assists) and Megan Ritsema (winning goalie).
Katherine Rowley scored both Red Devil goals.
Charlevoix 3
Harbor Springs 1
Charlevoix opened the season with a 3-1 Lake Michigan Conference victory over Harbor Springs.
The Rayders received goals from Becca Madison, Kaleigh Blanchard and Olivia Catt, with Ariel Ramsey, Meridith Rich and Caroline Dupuis picking up assists. Tammy Potter made 8 saves in net for Charlevoix.
Kristen Koehler scored Harbor's goal.
Cheboygan 1
Benzie Central 0
Cheboygan scored 10 minutes into the game and held on for a 1-0 soccer win over Benzie Central.
The Huskies (0-2) were led by the play of Samantha Kosiboski and Maria Blazejewski (goalie).

Chris Reed threw a no-hitter in Traverse City West's doubleheader sweep of Benzie Central.
Reed struck out 4 over 5 innings in the 10-1 nightcap.
Luke McPhall fanned 7 in the 14-9 opener, with Jordan Rife hitting a home run among his two hits and driving in 4 runs, while Tyson Shink had 2 hits.
Corey Keyton blasted a 3-run homer and had 4 RBIs on a 2-for-3 game. Sam Shipman added 2 hits.
The Titans (7-1) are slated to open the Big North Conference season today at Gaylord.
Central Lake 8 3

Led by the hitting of Brent Patton and Zach Light and the pitching of Ryan Crawley, Central Lake opened its season with an 8-2 win over Ski Valley Conference rival Gaylord St. Mary.
Patton had a triple and drove in three runs, while Light went 3-for-4 with two doubles and two RBIs.
Crawley struck out 11 batters in six innings.
Gaylord St. Mary won the nightcap 19-3.
Light tripled in two runs for Central Lake.

Glen Lake 3
Leland won three of four singles flights en route to a 5-3 win over Glen Lake.
The Comets (1-0) received wins from No. 2 Greg Alsip (6-1, 6-1), No. 3 Matt Larsen (6-2, 6-4) and No. 4 Chris Burda (7-5, 6-0). Glen Lake's Mitchell Roman won No. 1 singles 6-2, 6-3.
Both Leland doubles wins were comebackers, as Tyler Kenney and Chris Roman paired up for a No. 1 doubles win (1-6, 6-2, 6-0), and Arthur Wolin and Brian Zaryczny won 1-6, 6-1, 6-3.
Mike McNeil/Matt Keim won No. 2 doubles 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 for the Lakers, and Zach Gordon/Caleb Abbott won 6-2, 8-6.

The Leelanau School notched a 6-2 win over Traverse City Christian to open the season.
The Thunderbirds won three of four singles matches, getting wins by Will Morgan (No. 2, 6-4, 6-2), Yuki Ito (No. 3, 3-6, 6-3, 6-2) and Dylan Chong (No. 4, 6-2, 6-4). Christian's Mike Rudolph won No. 1 singles, 6-3, 6-1.
Leelanau School also won three doubles matches, with Anderson/Omerza winning at No. 1, Anderson/York at No. 2 and Worblin/Yeates at No. 4. Christian's Lindsay Kostrzewa and Kate Johnson notched a 4-6, 7-6, 7-6 win at No. 3 doubles. Full names were not provided for Leelanau doubles teams.

Traverse City Central swept the doubles flights as the Trojan JV team topped Elk Rapids 5-3.
Central's doubles teams of Dan Spencer/Jake Overholt (No. 1, 6-1, 7-5), Sam Kelly/Dante Valentino (No. 2, 6-0, 6-3), Spencer Engler/Ryan Throop (No. 3, 6-3, 6-3) and Matt Jackson/Preston Sanford (No. 4, 6-3, 6-7, 6-3).
Zak Miller won No. 2 singles 6-3, 4-6, 6-3 for the Trojans (3-0).
Elk Rapids' singles winners were Aaron Mayes (No. 1, 6-0, 6-0), Dan Werth (No. 3, 6-3, 6-3) and Cory Messingschlager (No. 4, 6-0, 6-1).

TC West JV 1
Northport swept singles en route to a 7-1 victory over the Traverse City West junior varsity.
Notching wins for the Wildcats, who play at Leelanau School on Friday, were Nate Scherrer (6-1, 6-3), Cody Brown (6-2, 6-1), Shane Detwiler (6-1, 6-2) and Jason Tropf (2-6, 6-2, 6-3).
Doubles winners for Northport were Basil Stowe and Drew Mitchell at No. 1 (4-6, 6-4, 7-5), Christian Gochez and Matt Kehl (7-5, 6-2) at No. 2 and Jason Roman and Emily Stowe (6-1, 6-3) at No. 3.

Tyler McCullin scored four goals Sunday as the YMCA lacrosse team beat Grand Rapids Northview 18-1.
Sam Tuck, Luke Stricker and Ross McKinnon added two goals. Andrew Elliott, Aaron Soyring, Jack Begley, Jack Sherwood, Nick Potthoff, Matt Mervau, Kyle Broadway and Scott Spencer chipped in solo goals.
Tyler Stricker and Bill Basch split time in goal.
