Elliott helps Frankfort sweep aside TC West

TRAVERSE CITY — Jenny Elliott had Traverse City West's number on Thursday.

And that number was one.

The Frankfort pitcher allowed only one hit in two games to propel the Panthers to a 5-0, 1-0 softball sweep of the Titans.

Elliott's victory in the opener was a six-inning perfect game. She struck out nine.

She followed with a one-hitter in game two, fanning eight.

All of Frankfort's runs were unearned. Leading the Panthers (4-0) offense were Bree Beyette, Allison Weber, Laney Eubank, Brenna Banktson and Coley Marshall, whose RBI double provided the only run in the nightcap.

Molly Valleau was the tough-luck loser in both games for West (4-2). She struck out eight batters in the opener.

Emily Jones had the Titans' only hit.

MORE SOFTBALL

TC Central 9 9
Benzie Central 2 1

Dori Lansbach had two hits in each game and pitchers Rachel Cook and Sierra Soden combined for 19 strikeouts to lead Traverse City Central to a 9-2, 9-1 sweep of Benzie Central.

Cook (3 hits, 9 strikeouts) was the winner in the opener and Soden (1 hit, 10 strikeouts) was on the mound in the second as the Trojans evened their record at 2-2.

Barbara Burke had three hits and Kelsey Sovereign added two in the second game.

TC St. Francis 3 4
Boyne City 0 0

Nikki Hastings and Delynne Montroy helped Traverse City St. Francis open the season with 3-0 and 4-0 shutouts of Boyne City.

Hastings allowed two hits and struck out 10 in game one. Jill Kuhlman had two hits.

Montroy didn't allow a hit and struck out three in game two while Hastings struck out four and scattered two hits.

Ariel Mawby and Kuhlman had two hits and Lindsey LaCourse an RBI double.

Glen Lake 1 9
L.L. St. Mary's 0 1

Cori Kahler and Danielle Noonan each picked up a victory, pitching Glen Lake to a 1-0 and 9-1 sweep of Lake Leelanau St. Mary's.

The duo combined on a two-hitter and struck out four in the nightcap and allowed five hits and struck out eight in the opener for the Lakers (4-0).

Tara Novak had a two-run inside-the-park home run and Kristen Pleva scored twice in the nightcap. Novak was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the sixth inning of the first game to force home Shannon Galla, who had tripled.

Pellston 14 11
Bellaire 4 1

Megan Bodzick and Caitlyn Spencley had three-run home runs and Katelynn LaCost a two-run shot as Pellston swept Bellaire in its season opener, 14-4 and 11-1.

Bodzick also had a triple among three hits and seven RBIs. Kelsey Kirsch added four hits — including a triple and a double — and scored four runs while LaCost added four stolen bases and Jill McNitt two hits, four runs and four steals.

Dove Leiber and Kirsch were the winning pitchers. Kirsch tossed a one-hitter and struck out six in the nightcap.

Kingsley 1 8
Elk Rapids 0 4

Amanda Worm hurled a shutout and Nikki Fisher's sixth-inning single delivered the only run of the game as Kingsley edged Elk Rapids 1-0 in the opener of a non-league doubleheader.

Worm struck out 12.

Kingsley (6-2) completed a sweep with an 8-4 win in the nightcap as three players had two hits each - Fisher, Courtney Stocking and McKala Kelly.

Onaway 3 15
Mancelona 1 0

Mancelona fell to 2-2 on the season after being swept by Onaway, 3-1 and 15-0.

Brooke Orman suffered the loss in the opener. She struck out eight.

TC West frosh 10 11
Petoskey frosh 0 20

Emily Crawford hurled a no-hitter as the Traverse City West freshmen blanked the Petoskey freshmen 10-0 in the opener of a softball doubleheader.

Sarah Goudey had two hits, including an inside-the-park home run, and batted in three runs to pace the Titans' offense. Kelly Flynn, Ellen Patenaude and Katie Kirkey added two hits each.

Petoskey won the second game 20-11. Kirkey had three hits and Kirsten Palmer and Jess Ferguson two each for West (1-3).

BASEBALL

TC Central 5 2
Benzie Central 2 1

Kevin Krantz was the winning pitcher in relief in both games, smacking a go-ahead home run in the second game, as Traverse City Central swept Benzie Central, 5-2 and 2-1.

Starting pitcher Zac Zoellner allowed one run and three hits in 6&1/3 innings in the opener.

Drew Weinbrecht had three hits and an RBI for the Trojans (5-3), while Josh Pilarski had two hits and three RBIs and Derek Diekman two hits.

Losing pitcher Micah Parshall allowed just one earned run and struck out nine in eight innings.

Logan Schendel had two hits for the Huskies (0-4)

TC St. Francis 8 5
Boyne City 4 5

TC St. Francis scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to salvage a 5-5 tie with Boyne City.

Parker Prusick had a pair of doubles for the Gladiators (1-2-1).

Danny Brick tossed a complete game, allowing five hits and striking out five, as St. Francis won the opener 8-4. Brick helped his own cause with three hits.

Frankfort 7 3
TC Christian 1 6

Chris Gondu, Tyler Stratton and Cameron Hollenbeck had two hits each as Frankfort defeated Traverse City Christian 7-1 in the first game of a doubleheader.

John Bower was the winning pitcher.

Christian bounced back with a 6-3 win in the nightcap. Bower and Alex Stieve had two hits each for Frankfort.

Suttons Bay 17 13
Leland 2 3

Suttons Bay's offense plated 30 runs in a 17-2, 13-3 sweep of Leland.

Shane Kaufman was the winning pitcher in the opener, allowing three hits and striking out eight.

Josh Feickert doubled twice and Anthony Stewart singled twice in the second game. Winning pitcher Bryan Belanger fanned six for Suttons Bay (4-2).

Mancelona 3 6
Onaway 1 5

Trenton Sweet's RBI single in the bottom of the sixth inning lifted Mancelona to a 6-5 win and a sweep of Onaway.

Winning pitcher Kodi Belhorn had two hits and two RBIs for Mancelona (3-1, 2-0 Ski Valley).

Cody Sehl was the winning pitcher and Greg Blano had two hits in game one.

Buckley 9 7
McBain 16 6

Freshman Sam Porter delivered a two-run double in the bottom of the sixth inning to cap a three-run rally and lift Buckley (1-1) past McBain 7-6 in the second game of a doubleheader.

Justin Weaver was the winning pitcher in relief.

McBain won the opener 16-9.

TC West frosh 13 11
Suttons Bay JV 3 3

Josh Kloosterman had two doubles, two RBIs and three runs in the first game and was the winning pitcher in the second as the Traverse City West freshman swept the Suttons Bay junior varsity 13-3, 11-3.

Kevin Kreta had two runs and two RBIs in support of winning pitcher Trevor Tooley in the opener. Trevor Hinds added two hits and three RBIs.

Supporting Kloosterman in the nightcap were Luke Hessler (2 hits, 2 runs, RBI) and Kreta (2 runs, RBI). Kloosterman also scored twice.

TENNIS

Mount Pleasant edges TC Central for title

Defending regional champion Mount Pleasant and Traverse City Central each won three flights and shared three others.

But the Oilers came up with one more point to edge TC Central 17-16 to win the Great Lakes Invitational. TC West was third with 13 followed by TC St. Francis with 2.

Taking first outright with 3-0 records for TC Central were Doug Burke at No. 1 singles, Jack Milliken/Ben Watts at No. 2 and Jeff Byl/Glover Kosch at No. 4.

TC Central, West and Mount Pleasant shared first at No. 2 singles and No. 1 doubles.

Ethan Weckstein played for Central and Dan Jarboe for West at No. 2. West had Nathan Feenstra/Vikash Pillay at No. 1 doubles while Central countered with Spencer Powell/Jamie Olson.

Glen Lake 6
TC Christian 2

Glen Lake swept doubles en route to a 6-2 triumph over Traverse City Christian.

Winning doubles for the Lakers were Dan Sterling/Andy Wichtoski at No. 1 (6-2, 7-5), Mike McNeil/Matt Keim at No. 2 (6-1, 6-2), Wyatt Smith/Alexis Turner at No. 3 (6-4, 6-2) and Issac Florip/Brian Buchan at No. 4 (6-0, 6-1).

Jeremy Brown won 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3 singles and Kyle Castle 6-4, 6-0 at No. 4.

Mike Rudolph won at No. 1 (6-3, 6-1) and Betsy Rudolph at No. 2 (7-6, 4-6, 6-4) for TC Christian.

Charlevoix 5
Elk Rapids 3

Charlevoix won three of four doubles matches en route to a 5-3 tennis victory over Elk Rapids.

Scoring doubles wins for the Rayders were Justin Klooster/Trevor Mays at No. 1 (6-2, 6-4), Brad Cyr/Chris Bartling at No. 2 (6-4, 7-5) and Alex Moelter/Kevin Greyerbiehl at No. 3 (6-4, 6-0).

Weston Bryan added a 5-7, 6-3, 6-2 win at No. 2 singles, while Scottie Silberhorn posted a 6-4, 7-6 win at No. 4.

Winning for Elk Rapids (1-3, 1-2 Lake Michigan Conference) were Aaron Mayes at No. 1 singles (6-0, 6-0), Dan Werth at No. 3 singles (6-3, 6-4) and Alex Bethke/Nick Viglione at No. 4 doubles (7-5, 1-6, 7-6).
