Titans capture Alpena Invitational

ALPENA — Four in the twos worked for Traverse City West on Friday.

The Titans had four scores in double digits to win the Alpena Invitational.

West finished with a 377. TC Central was second with a 409 while the host Wildcats were third with a 440.

Natalie White paced West with a 90 while Jordan Newhouse added a 91. Gaby Muller added a 97 and Leighanna Whiting a 99.

Central's Natalie Matuszak was overall medalist with an 87. Kari Tomaski added a 95, Carrie Phillion a 96 and Melody VanDusen a 131.

TC West also won the JV portion of the tournament with a 499.

Grayling 415
St. Francis 585

St. Francis' Katie Blodgett earned medalist honors with a 91, but Grayling beat the Gladiators 415-585 at the Traverse City Golf and Country Club.

Abby Wheeler's 97 led Grayling. Kristi Calkins fired a 101, Monica Leslie 108 and Leigha Stevens 109 for the Vikings.

For St. Francis, Lindsy-Kay Belanger shot a 106, Barb Dawson a 122 and Alexa Meyer a 128.

TRACK

TC Central, TC West tie for fourth at Page Relays

Midland easily won the Page Relays at Midland Dow with 72 points.

Bay City Central was second with 48 points followed closely by Dow (44). TC Central and TC West tied for fourth with 42 points.

Jeff Serrell won the pole vault (12'6”) for Central and teamed with Gavin Guernsey, Trevor Glick and David Harman to win the field event relay (1:43.19).

Other top three finishers from West and Central were:

TC West girls eighth, St. Francis second

Elise Carolan won the 1600 (5:26) as the Traverse City West girls placed eighth in Division 1 in the Saginaw Valley Invitational.

Sarah VanCoonis was third in the pole vault (8') and Margeaux Raymond third in the high jump (5'2”).

In Division 3-4, the St. Francis girls placed second. Katie Olsen paced the Gladiators by winning the 800 (2:32.1).

Alex Bower was second in the discus with a school record toss (35'11''). Hannah Meachum finished third in the 100 hurdles (17.2). The 3200 relay team also took third (10:45).

The St. Francis boys were sixth. Dan Maxbauer won the 110 high hurdles (16.29).

Onekama, Manton win Onekama Frost Bite

Onekama and Manton won the Onekama Frost Bite Invitational.

Onekama claimed the girls title with 138 points. The Portagers were followed by Suttons Bay (112), Marion (77), Manton (76), Brethren (51), Mesick (38), Grand Traverse Academy (27) and Walkerville (7).

For Suttons Bay, Breanna Korson won the 800 (2:42), 1600 (6:02) and teamed with Alyssa Korson, Lizzy Freed and Elizabeth Adams to take the 3200 relay (10:54). In addition, Kelly Kerr won the long jump and Jenny Mahla the high jump (5'1”).

Alyssa Korson was second in the 200 (29.3) and 300 hurdles (54.3). Cassandra Buffum added a second in the 3200 (13:36). The Norse were also second in the 1600 relay (4:45).

Manton cruised to victory in the boys race with 200 points. The Rangers were followed by Onekama (91), Suttons Bay (78), Mesick (63), Brethren (47), Walkerville (9).

For Suttons Bay, Ben Wynsma placed second in the 1600 (4:58) and 3200 (10:58). Eric Hernandez took second in the 200 (24.65) and Kegan Rummel second in the discus (125'6”). The Norse picked up a second in the 800 relay (1:42).

Mesick's Brandon Szegda, Ricky Wentworth, Victor Verpooten and Mike Willette captured the 400 relay (47.1). Willette was second in the 100 (11.69) as was Josh Wright in the shot put (38'11”). Mesick also took second in the 1600 relay (3:51.5).

SOCCER

Kalkaska 7
Forest Area 5

Avery Diola scored three goals and Erica Fox two as Kalkaska defeated Forest Area 7-5.

Renee Benoit and Hannah Lantzer added solo goals for the Blazers (2-1). Katie Moran netted two goals for Forest Area (0-3). Cassie Magee added a goal and two assists. Emily Pojar and Lauren Kneer scored one goal apiece.

TENNIS

Leelanau School splits pair of matches

Northport swept singles to beat Leelanau School 6-2 in a match Friday. Leelanau School beat Glen Lake by an identical 6-2 score.

Northport picked up wins from Nate Scherrer (3-6, 7-5, 7-6), Drew Mitchell (6-3, 6-1), Cody Brown (6-1, 6-1) and Jason Tropf (5-7, 6-2, 6-2) in singles. Shane Detweiler and Christian Gochez (5-7, 7-6, 6-3) and Jason Roman and Emily Stowe (6-7, 7-6, 7-6) posted doubles wins for the Wildcats.

For Leelanau School, Chris Omerza and Mike Anderson (6-3, 6-1) and Duncan Brookstone and Taylor Yeates (6-4, 7-5) claimed wins in doubles.

In its win over Glen Lake, Leelanau School won three singles flights — Will Morgan (6-1, 6-4), Yuki Ito (6-1, 5-7, 6-2) and Zach Stanz (6-1, 6-3). The doubles teams of Omerza-Anderson, Ryan Sears-Pat Morgan and Brookstone -Yeates also were victorious.

SOFTBALL

Kalkaska 20, 16
Grayling 3, 0

Marissa Taylor pitched a no-hitter and Kara Ponstein fired a one-hitter as Kalkaska swept a Lake Michigan Conference doubleheader from Grayling, 20-3 and 16-0.

Taylor struck out nine, Ponstein three for the 2-0 Blazers, who will play in a tournament at Kingsley today.

BASEBALL

Kalkaska 8, 4

Rocky McNamara had a two-run single and Josh Stapleton two hits and a RBI as Grayling edged Kalkaska 5-4 for its first win of the season.

Taylor Desenfants scattered five hits and allowed three earned runs in picking up the win on the mound for the Vikings (1-5, 1-3 Lake Michigan).

Kalkaska won the opener by an 8-5 score. Tim Dixon had two RBIs for the Blazers (1-1).

LL St. Mary 6, 14

Wes Buchan collected six hits and three RBIs as Glen Lake split a doubleheader with Lake Leelanau St. Mary, winning the opener 12-6 and dropping the nightcap 14-3.

Josh Scarbrough, coming off a four-hit, four-RBI performance against Suttons Bay earlier this week, added two hits and two RBIs in the opener. Winning pitcher Gary Brown also drove in two runs.

Ray Platte struck out eight in hurling St. Mary's to the win in the nightcap. Matt Pasch had two hits and three RBIs and Casey Drow two hits for the Eagles.
