Kibbey, Lange star for Hope

TRAVERSE CITY — Sarah Kibbey (Glen Lake) and Lindsay Lange (Manistee) combined to win four events Saturday as the Hope women's track team beat Albion 120.5-69.5 and Adrian 148-20 in a pair of Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) meets Saturday.

Kibbey captured the long jump (15'8&.75”) and triple jump (30'4&.75”) while Lange took the 100 hurdles (15.12) and shot put (36'.75”). Kibbey also placed second in the 400 (1:03.28). Lange finished fourth in the javelin (94'6”).

The Hope men beat Adrian 125-48 and lost to Albion 109-80. Sanders Frye (Harbor Springs) was fourth in the 800 (1:56.93) while Ben Miller (Benzie Central) placed fourth and Preston Pierson (TC Central) sixth in the 400 (53.0 and 53.71).

On Wednesday, Hope beat Calvin in men's track for the first time in 22 years, 99-92. The Flying Dutch also upended Olivet 127-55. Frye finished third in the 1500 (4:12.05).

The women's team beat Olivet 139-30 and lost to Calvin 108.5-73.5. Lange won the 400 hurdles (1:10) and long jump (16'11.25”), took second in the 100 hurdles (15.12) and third in the shot put (38'7”). Kibbey was second in the triple jump (32'2”) and fourth in the 800 (2:25.97).

Calvin's Amanda Leese (Central Lake) was second to Lange in the long jump (16'5.5”).

• Northwood's Syrena Rexroat (Lake Leelanau St. Mary) won the 3000 meters in the Northwood Open. Her time: 10:55.43. Ferris State's Margot McGlothlin (Suttons Bay) finished second in the 400 (1:00.29) and Northern Michigan's Danielle Stein (Kalkaska) third in the 5000 (20:03.61). In field events, Saginaw Valley's Emily Nugent placed second in the discus (123'6”), third in the hammer throw (147'4”) and fifth in the shot put (38'4”). Northern Michigan's Karin Diebold (Ellsworth) was third in the pole vault (9'6”). On the men's side, Ferris State's Justin Paquette (Manton) finished third in the shot put (43'3”) and seventh in the discus (118'5”).

• Spring Arbor's Holly Pifer (Buckley) placed 25th in the 400 meters (1:08.88) in the Eastern Michigan Invitational. Cornerstone's Kassi Hency (Kingsley) was 14th in the 400 hurdles (1:15.63). Michigan State's Josh Hofbauer (Harbor Springs) came in seventh in the 3000-meter steeplechase (9:44.16). Spring Arbor's Takis Pifer (Buckley) placed 41st in the men's 1500 (4:06.50).

• Michigan State closed out the regular season at 12-11 after suffering an 8-0 loss to Northwestern in a Big Ten women's tennis match. Christine Milliken (TC Central) dropped a 6-0, 6-0 match to Suzie Matzenauer at No. 6 singles. Milliken and Christine Bader fell to Alexis Connill and Samantha Murray 8-6 at No. 3 doubles.

• Eric Gordon (Traverse City West) was in on four tackles in Michigan State's Green-White football. Gordon was a linebacker on the White team, which lost 21-8.

• Hope dropped two MIAA tennis matches in the last week. The Flying Dutch lost to Calvin 8-1 last Tuesday and 6-3 to Albion on Saturday. Cameron DeHaan (Cadillac) lost to Calvin's Mike Goorhouse 6-2, 4-6, 7-6 at No. 5 singles and to Albion's Nate Marshall 6-2, 6-0.

• Ruth Diemer (McBain NMC) pounded out three hits in Calvin's 8-1 win over Albion in game one of a doubleheader. Diemer is second on the team in hitting at .386. Calvin is 6-4 in the MIAA,10-12 overall.
