Alliance tune up by tuning out Lowell, 34-0

LOWELL The Traverse City Alliance rugby team tuned up for Saturday's Midwest Tournament with a 34-0 victory over Lowell.
The Alliance (4-0) haven't allowed a try yet this season.
Matthew Benson (TC St. Francis) had a try and two conversions for nine points to lead Traverse City's offense.
Contributing one try each were Gordie Rozga (TC West), Paul Taylor (West), Don Highway (West), Kevin Petterson (SF) and Brad Stilley (West).
The Alliance are one of 16 teams who qualified to play in the Midwest Tournament in Elkhart, Ind. The Midwest region includes 350 teams.
TC will take on the third-seeded team from Illinois in the opener, then will play either top-seeded Penn High (Illinois) or Iowa.

Leland 2 2
Logan Schendel had a pair of home runs as Benzie Central swept Leland, 8-2 and 18-2.
Schendel had a grand slam, triple and six RBIs in the nightcap for Benzie (4-4). Nick Cooper added three hits including two doubles and Micah Parshall had two hits with a two-run homer for winning pitcher Josh Thaxton.
Schendel had a two-run homer and Connor Nugent two hits in game one. Ryan Olson struck out five.
Glen Lake 12 11
Buckley 1 7
Weston Buchan had three hits and Josh Jacklin added two hits and two RBIs in each game as Glen Lake swept a doubleheader from Buckley, 12-1 and 11-7.
Buchan had a double and triple in the opener for the Lakers (4-8). Sean Griffard and Josh Scarbrough added two hits and Gary Brown scattered five hits.
Glen Lake scored six unearned runs in the fourth inning to break open game two against the Bears (1-3).
Brown and KC Novak had two RBIs to back winning pitcher Devin Weber.
Petoskey JV 1 6
TC East freshmen 0 0
The Traverse City East Junior High freshmen opened their baseball season with solid pitching, but the Trojans' offense couldn't muster much against the Petoskey junior varsity while losing 1-0 and 6-0.
Ryan Truchke was the tough-luck loser in the opener. He struck out 11 and allowed only two hits. He also had two hits himself.
Chris Roop suffered the loss in the second game. He struck out eight.
Glen Lake 14 17
Buckley 2 1
Danielle Noonan and Cori Kahler combined on a pair of three-hitters as Glen Lake swept Buckley 14-2, 17-1 to improve its softball record to 10-0.
Noonan and Kahler combined to strike out 11 batters in the first game.
Leading the Lakers' offense were Kaleigh Blackburn (3 hits, 2 runs), Shannon Galla (2 hits, 2 RBIs) and Noonan (2 RBIs).
Pacing Glen Lake in the nightcap were Sabrina Galla (2 hits, 4 RBIs), Kristin Pleva (2 hits, 4 stolen bases, 4 runs), Blackburn (2 hits, 2 RBIs), Shannon Galla (2 steals, 3 runs), Erica Easter (2 RBIs) and Tara Novak (3 runs).
The Lakers return to action at the Boyne City tournament Saturday morning. Their first opponent is Clinton.

Benzie Central 6 6
Haley VerSnyder was a big part of a doubleheader sweep by Leland, driving in the winning run in one game and pitching for the victory in the other.
VerSnyder's game-winning RBI single in the sixth inning of the opener was the difference in the 7-6 contest. VerSnyder had 2 hits and 2 RBIs. Dena Popp picked up the win, fanning five in six innings and Kayla Mendonza had 2 hits.
VerSnyder won the second game in the mound, with Popp picking up a save. Rhiannon Hildenbrandt and Popp each belted a triple and Danielle Seiter and Kaleigh Stinson had 2 hits each. Morgan Wilway added three standout plays in the outfield.
Jackie Frederick had four hits and scored 4 runs for the Huskies in the twinbill.
Leland (3-3) travel to Lake Leelanau St. Mary on Monday.
St. Francis JV 10 20
Central JV 5 1
Heather Larsen, Shelby Smith and winning pitcher Amy Brunner had three hits as the TC St. Francis JV topped the TC Central JV, 20-1.
Allison Vanderkolk, Kelli Day, Lauren Adams and Tara Kellicut added two hits for St. Francis (8-0).
Larsen had three hits and Rachael Overmire struck out seven as St. Francis won the opener 10-5.
Suttons Bay prevails at Northwest double dual
Ben Wynsma had a hand in three victories as Suttons Bay finished with 80½ points to top Mesick (47) and Frankfort (41½) in a boys Northwest Conference double dual.
Wynsma won the 800 (2:12.99) and 1600 (4:58.31) and was on the victorious 3200 relay (9:31.12).

Kingsley boys win quadrangular meet
Brian Bott, Alex Hakes and J.J. Sanchez were all double winners as the Kingsley boys won a quadrangular meet.
The Stags racked up 130 points, with Manton second at 92.5, Glen Lake third with 19 and Buckley fourth with 14.5.
Bott won the shot put (44'3) and discus (129'5), Hakes captured the long jump (18'10&1/4) and high jump (5'10) and Sanchez won the 110 hurdles (15.6) and 300 hurdles (43.6).

Bellaire runs to victory at six-team home meet
Bellaire won a pair of relaysn as the Eagles posted a first-place finish at a six-team meet.
The Eagles finished with 193 points. Mancelona was second with 134 while Ellsworth was third with 124.
Bellaire won the 400 (46.48) and 1600 (3:48.37) relays.

TC West wins 9th-10th meet at Harbor Springs
Greg Forrester won three individual events and ran a leg on a first-place relay team as Traverse City West edged host Harbor Springs 124-123 in the boys portion of Wednesday's 9th-10th Harbor Springs Invitational.
Forrester won the 110 hurdles (16.1), 300 hurdles (44.6) and long jump (17'8). He also joined Eric Wilson, Gunner Brammer and Ben Coughenhour on the winning 1600 relay (3:51).
Wilson had three wins. In addition to the 1600, he won the 800 (2:10) and joined Ray Innis, Ben Dean and Zack Niedzwiecki on the first-place 3200 relay (9:10).
The foursome of Antony West, Shane Totten, Jay Myers and John Calhout combined to win two relays, the 400 (48.9) and 800 (1:41).
Norse push past the Panthers, host Mesick
Breanna Korson won three individual events as Suttons Bay won a Northwest Conference girls track double dual.
The Norse finished with 71 points. Frankfort was second with 60 while Mesick had 30.
Korson won the 400 (1:07), 800 (2:43) and 1600 (5:56) to spark Suttons Bay.

Kingsley runs away with quadrangular meet
Brittany Denter won three events to lead Kingsley to a quad meet victory.
The Stags racked up 135.5 points, followed by Manton (63.5), Glen Lake (34) and Buckley (15).
Denter won the high jump with (4-8), 100 hurdles (18.42) and long jump (14-2.5).
Glen Lake's Marissa Treece accounted for much of the Lakers' scoring, winning four events. Treece claimed the 400 (61.54), 800 (2:26.73), 1,600 (5:10.37) and 3,200 (11:46.46).

Olivia Morrison had a hand in five of Elk Rapids' six goals as the Elks' varsity defeated the Traverse City Central Gold junior varsity 6-0.
Morrison had three goals and two assists as Elk Rapids improved to 3-2. The Trojans slipped to 0-2-1.
Lexi Small added two goals for the Elks, while Kim Sills added a goal and an assist and Kelsey Hawskins Laura Bailey and Mary Toteff each contributed an assist.
Elk Rapids hosts Grayling tonight in a Lake Michigan Conference match.
Roscommon 6
Forest Area 0
Roscommon topped Forest Area 6-0.
Tina Preston made 12 saves for the Warriors (0-4), who host Clare on Monday.

Miki Smith blanked Glen Lake in a 3-0 victory by the Traverse City Central JV Black.
Smith made 4 saves, as defenders Ashley Samuel, Meagan Vermeten and Molly Heinritz let very little through.
MollyKate Gardner, Mily Gourlay and Amanda Stricker scored goals for the Trojans (2-2), and Megan Egbert had 2 assists.
TC West JV Gold 2
Elk Rapids JV 0
Emma Stone had the shutout in goal as TC West JV Gold blanked the Elk Rapids JV, 2-0.
Brittney Reinshuttle and Laura Adams scored for Gold (1-2). Assists went to Brittany McGuire and Katelynn Griffin.
Traverse City 7
Petoskey 2
Ross McKinnon had 2 goals and an assist as Traverse City knocked off Petoskey 7-2.
Andrew Elliott added a goal and an assist and Sam Tuck, Kyle Broadway, Kyle McLachlan and Ben Seger each had goals for TC.
Tyler Stricker made 8 saves in net for the win, as the defense played well.
Traverse City (2-0) will take the field May 5 against Waterford in Petoskey.

Glen Lake 1
Traverse City's JV team notched a 7-1 victory over Glen Lake.
Central received singles wins from No. 1 Billy Korreck (6-0, 0-6, 6-2), No. 2 Zak Miller (6-3, 7-5) and No. 3 Shawn Roach (6-0, 6-4).
Dan Sterling was Glen Lake's lone winner, taking No. 4 singles by a 6-3, 6-1 score.
In doubles, the Trojans' were winners in all four flights: Dan Spencer/Jake Overholt, 6-1 6-0 at No. 1; Sam Kelly/Dante Valentino over Mcneil, 7-6, 6-0 at No. 2; Ryan Throop/Spencer Engler, 6-0, 6-2 at No. 3 and Matt Coleman/Christian Groesbeck, 6-1, 6-3 at No. 4.
