Titans double up, win Whitehall Invitational

WHITEHALL — Sparked by a sweep in doubles, Traverse City West won a head-to-head tiebreaker for first place to claim Saturday's six-team Whitehall Invitational tennis tournament.

The Titans finished with 19 points, as did Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian. West won the tiebreaker because it defeated NorthPointe in four of seven head-to-head matches.

The Titans' No. 2 doubles team of Cam Williams and Ben Street led the way by losing only one game all day. The pair defeated NorthPointe 6-0, 6-0 in the final.

Also winning doubles titles for West were Vikash Pillay and Nathan Feenstra, who beat NorthPointe 6-3, 4-6, 6-0 in the No. 1 final; Ricky Bell and Carter Jones, who were 6-4, 6-0 winners over Grandville Calvin Christian in the No. 3 title match; and John Cannon and Collin O'Connor, who rallied to win the No. 4 title match 0-6, 6-0, 7-5 over NorthPointe.

In addition, the Titans' Andrew Greenman placed second at No. 4 singles.

West, which plays in the Saginaw Heritage Invitational today, placed second to NorthPointe last spring.

Following today's action, the Titans continue a busy week with a Big North Conference match at Petoskey on Thursday before competing in the Midland Dow Invitational on Saturday.
