Tim Bloomquist and daughter Esmé enjoyed a trip to New York City after winning last year’s Friends of the Festival drawing. This year’s prize is a film festival lifetime pass.

TRAVERSE CITY — Tim Bloomquist and his family planned on joining the Friends of the Festival, but they didn't think the festival would reward them so handsomely.

Bloomquist submitted his application just before the deadline during last year's Traverse City Film Festival. The Traverse City resident had to enter before noon on the closing Sunday to be eligible for the Friends of the Festival drawing, with the grand prize sending the winner to New York City for a premiere of "Sicko.”

But Bloomquist never thought he'd be the one headed to New York even though he rushed home to send in the envelope on time.

"Unbelievable,” said Bloomquist detailing his reaction to winning the trip.

Bloomquist took his daughter Esmé on their first venture into the Big Apple — not including the thousands of times he's seen it on "Law & Order” — and the two came away with rave reviews.

"The city was much cleaner than I imagined,” Bloomquist said. "The area we stayed was quite safe. People just told us not to go into Central Park after dark, which was a no-brainer for me after 'Law & Order.'”

Whoever wins this year's drawing won't have a similar experience. Deb Lake, the festival manager, said the top prize will be a pass for life to the Traverse City Film Festival. It will be awarded during the Closing Night Party on Sunday.

Lake said the trip to New York City was centered around Michael Moore's film and since he's not filming another project right now, the luxurious grand prize will go on hiatus.

Other prizes include select passes to next year's screenings, and any Friend of the Festival is eligible as long as the application is submitted prior to noon on Sunday, Aug. 5.
