08/03/2007VIP lounge offers cold comfort to visitorsMeals, snacks help promote local productsTRAVERSE CITY — After a long day of panel discussions, films and parties, Traverse City Film Festival VIPs can retire to their accommodations at area hotels. But when they need a break between events for a snack, some rest or to catch up on work, they can turn to the Filmmaker's Lounge. Located above a handful of shops in downtown Traverse City, between the State Theatre and the City Opera House, the lounge is open from noon to 9 p.m. every day. An empty office suite just days before the event, it's now set up as many small rooms where invited guests can have a meeting, watch a movie, listen to jazz, work at a desk, tap into the Internet, take a nap, have a meal or enjoy a beer. Complete with fresh flowers, concierge, and a bar of sorts stocked with hot and cold drinks, the lounge was furnished and decorated by area designers in northern Michigan and film motifs. But its most popular feature may be its buffet table laden with snacks, light meals and desserts — from soups, sandwiches, pizza, and cold cuts to organic fruits and vegetables, cheese and crackers, ice cream and caramel corn. Prominent on the menu are local specialties like cherry salsa, cherry butter, fudge and berry pies. "A lot of people did a lot of things to make this different than any green room,” said manager Thomas Webb. "It's a place where people can work.”
