08/04/2007Film Festival Outtakes"He finally got the dress code e-mail, said John Robert Williams upon Larry Charles' entrance to a panel discussion earlier in the Traverse City Film Festival. Charles was adorned in his signature sunglasses, T-shirt and red bandana. A reader who went to see the movie at the Open Space Wednesday night wrote to describe his encounter with "the young lad who was dressed up like Charlie Chaplin. "My family watched him entertain the crowd and I went up to put a dollar in a box, he said. "When I didn't see a box on the ground I tried to hand the money to him. At first he said nothing like a true mime but then he whispered, 'I don't do this for money, I just like to see people smile.' "How wonderfully refreshing that we have young people who feel rewarded just by bringing laughter and good feelings to strangers. How great it is to live in a town with young kids like that. Record-Eagle reporter Vanessa McCray reported that during the Open Space showing of "North by Northwest, "somebody creative thought to distribute sheets of paper on which were printed folding instructions to make a paper airplane. "Movie-goers were told to make a plane and release it during the famous airplane scene in the film, she reports. "But, this viewer, who loves and encourages all audience participatory efforts (What's a wedding without 'The Hokey-Pokey?') was saddened to see not one person in her section let fly a plane. John Laurence, director of "I Am An American Soldier: One Year in Iraq with the 101st Airborne, was in the audience at a screening of "Chicago 10 and became part of the Q&A. Turns out Laurence covered the Chicago 10 trial as a reporter. "Chicago 10 director Brett Morgen wasn't even born when the trial was going on. Laurence commended the film, spoke to its authenticity and added a reporter's take. Before introducing D.A. Pennebaker's Bob Dylan documentary "Don't Look Back, Michael Moore and Bob Downes led the audience in a singalong of "Blowin' in the Wind. Moore does a spot-on Dylan imitation, according to one of the audience members. Compiled from Record-Eagle employees and others.
