08/06/2007Film Festival OuttakesPrior to the start of an afternoon film in Lars Hockstad Auditorium Saturday, the crowd was advised to turn off all cell phones. Then film festival co-founder Doug Stanton no sooner got on stage to introduce the film when his cell phone rang with a loud musical ring. The crowd roared. "This wasn't meant to happen, he said with chagrin. For a lot of people attending films in this year's new venue, Lars Hockstad, which is located in Central Grade School, it was a little trip down memory lane as they passed their former classrooms and then sat in the very auditorium where they once went to assemblies and held talent shows. Attending one of the screenings, former student Mickey Fivenson of Traverse City waxed poetic on how he once stole the head off the Lincoln statue that stands on one side of the stage. Quite a few soccer coaches, families, players and fans including some children went to see "Eleven Men Out Saturday, mainly for the soccer. It was described as a "quirky misfit-sports-team comedy about a professional soccer team whose star player is banned from the league after telling a journalist that he is gay, and wasn't rated, but carried no warnings as there were for "Borat Uncensored. Turned out there was very little soccer action in the film from Iceland, but plenty of the kind of action, including graphic subtitles, that get R and NC-17 ratings here in the U.S. Some walked out. Focus Features production president John Lyons released a little known fact about the movie "Fargo during Sunday's panel. After Ron Howard turned down the role of the car salesman, it came down to William Macy and Michael Moore. Moore was just thankful Macy got the part, but Lyons hinted at possible footage for next year's festival. The Little Black Dress on Cass downtown installed a red carpet and placed stars on the walkway for patrons this week. Wrote one reader, "A cute addition to the filmfest.
