08/09/2007Northern NotesVets express gratitude for recognition during festivalJoseph J. Weber of Buckley wrote to thank Ted Shaw from Brown Lumber Co. and Del Corner for everything they've done for area World War II veterans. "The trip to Washington, D.C., for the dedication (of the memorial to) World War II vets was fabulous, Joseph wrote. "To be able to ride on the float in the Cherry Festival to represent the World War II vets was a real honor. The picnic afterwards was really great (and) the cups of sweet cherries and the pie and ice cream really made that picnic a memorable affair. To be able to see so many old buddies was really great. Thanks again to all who made this possible. Frank Trombley, a U.S. Air Force veteran from Kalkaska, also wrote to commend the administrative personnel and especially the volunteers for all their efforts to make the Cherry Festival parade such a huge success. "Many, many thanks great job! he wrote. "It also was very heartwarming because of the great response we got from the people along the way. Thank you, thank you they said to us vets, so I say to them, thank you, thank you sincerely. Frank also sends his heartfelt thanks to Del Corner and Ted Shaw for organizing and sponsoring the float that honored World War II veterans and the reunion picnic that followed. "All in all, it was a most memorable day, Frank wrote. Sharon and Bill Timmons of Rapid City would like to thank two very responsible Traverse City lifeguards for their lifesaving tactics when they realized that the couple was stranded on the pontoon boat. Sharon and Bill's boat was caught in the logs on the Elk River on the Fourth of July as black clouds and high winds closed in. A young man and his fiancee who were kayaking on the river came to their rescue. The young man assessed the situation and, while his fiancee maintained the safety of their two kayaks and fishing gear, jumped into the river, and pushing and pulling, dislodged the boat from the logs and stumps. "We wanted to pay them, but they refused, suggesting if and when we saw someone in need, please stop to assist and that would be their payment, Sharon and Bill wrote. "How proud and fortunate we were to meet these young adults who exhibited qualities seldom seen these days. Therese Schaub, Girls on the Run/Girls on Track coordinator for Leelanau, Benzie and Grand Traverse counties, wrote to thank everyone who made the sixth annual "Girls on the Run and Girls on Track season and final run such an amazing success. This year, girls in third through sixth grade at 21 elementary schools in Leelanau, Grand Traverse and Benzie counties participated in the six-week program. On May 20, 512 girls, 45 coaches and many family members completed a 5-kilometer running event at Glen Lake School. The run was the culmination of the program, during which girls met with coaches at each of the schools and through self-esteem building, uplifting games and workouts trained to complete the run. Therese would like to thank all 45 of the amazing coaches and their assistants who gave numerous hours of volunteer time to the girls. "You are all beautiful examples of health, joy and love, Therese wrote. "The girls are so fortunate to have each of you in their lives. I also want to thank Glen Lake School and Athletic Director Paul Christenson for allowing us to use their beautiful cross country course for our final event. Also, thanks to our parents, volunteers and local sponsors. You did so much for each of your girls. We could not have done it without you. Most importantly, Therese wants to honor the 512 girls who crossed the finish line. "Each of you accomplished an amazing goal, she wrote. "Your smiles, your energy and your 'I can do it' attitude will carry with you into so many areas of your life. Congratulations on this amazing accomplishment.
