Rodney Crowell plays at the Leelanau Sands Showroom on Saturday.

Rodney Crowell uses childhood's inspirations

PESHAWBESTOWN — Rodney Crowell grew up in Houston surrounded by southern culture and country music. And with musical relatives on both sides of the family, Crowell began honing his performance skills at a young age.

By the time he was 11 he had joined his father's band as a drummer, and by 15 he had formed his own musical group.

But it wasn't until the mid-1970s that Crowell got his big break. The year was 1974, and Emmylou Harris was preparing for her first album when she heard Crowell's songs, "Til I Can Gain Control Again” and "Bluebird Wine.” She recorded both, and Crowell's career as an international songwriter and recording artist officially began.

Now Crowell is headed to the Leelanau Sands Showroom to share just a few of his classic hits.

"We were lucky to get him,” said Tim Schmidt, Grand Traverse Resort and Casinos entertainment and promotions manager. "He was available and his price was right.”

Crowell's stop in Peshawbestown comes in the midst of a fall tour that includes stops in Missouri, Kentucky and Texas.

It has been 30 years since Crowell was first signed as a recording artist with Warner Brothers Records. Since then he has released 11 solo albums and produced numerous albums for other artists, including five for ex-wife Rosanne Cash, the daughter of Johnny Cash.

And with music that has evolved from a more traditional country sound to include some rock influences, Crowell has a large fan base.

Schmidt said that he expects the show to be almost completely sold-out by the time of Crowell's performance on Saturday.

"I think the people that are his fans are definitely excited,” Schmidt said.

The show is scheduled for Saturday at 8 p.m.

Tickets for the concert range from $15 to $20 and can be reserved by calling (800) 585-3737 or by visiting www.starticketsplus.com. Children age 10-17 may attend the performance, but only people 18 and over will be allowed to enter the gaming floor.
