Retail sales activity up in July

TRAVERSE CITY — State retailers reported positive sales in July and posted their first three-month string of increased sales since 2004, according to the monthly sales index generated by the Michigan Retailers Association.

"Although July is not a key month for retailing, we are encouraged to see sales activity in positive territory for the third month in a row,” MRA chairman Larry Meyer said.

The state retail index for July showed 46 percent of retailers surveyed reported increased sales from last year, compared to 32 percent recording declines and 13 percent showing no chance. The seasonally adjusted performance index made it the best sales month since April 2004.

Businesses are somewhat optimistic about sales potential for August through October. The survey said 49 percent expect increased sales for the quarter compared to last year, while 20 percent expect sales to decline and 20 anticipate no change.

The MRA is the country's largest association of general merchandise retailers.
