Rochester wins Lober Classic; Central 4th, West 5th

TRAVERSE CITY — Rochester captured the Bob Lober Golf Classic on Thursday at Grand Traverse Resort and Spa.

Rochester finished with a two-day score of 691.

Traverse City Central placed fourth in the Division 1 field with 738 while Traverse City West was fifth with 742.

Livonia Churchill's Shannon Warner was medalist with a 145 (73-72). Traverse City Central's Natalie Matuszak finished seventh at 161 (78-83) and West's Jordan Newhouse 12th at 169 (82-87).

Central also had Chelsea Guoynes at 178, Erin Chadwell at 189, Taylor Schultz at 212, Rachel White at 218 and Rachel Jurik at 231.

In addition to Newhouse, Brooke Rodes shot 178, Leighanna Whiting 194, Olivia Casciano 201 and Korinne Diss 222 for West.

DeWitt won Division II with a 708. Flint Powers captured Division III with a 716.

Farmington Hills Mercy won the JV tournament at High Pointe with an 847. West came in at 1038 and Central at 1293. West was paced by Alexis McCafferty at 217 while Central was led by Kelly White at 301.

Traverse City West let a 3-1 lead slip away with 17 minutes remaining as Rochester Stoney Creek rallied to beat the Titans 4-3.

Stoney Creek's Luke Norman staked the Cougars to a 1-0 lead 25 minutes into the game. West tied it before half on a Brady Fagen goal. Casey Townsend assisted.

Townsend scored unassisted five minutes into the second half. West then made it 3-1 when Curt Olson tallied off a Townsend assist.

But that lead evaporated in the final 17 minutes. Norman scored on a penalty kick. Then, after Townsend left the game after receiving a yellow card, Jordan Tyler tied it with about nine minutes to go. Two minutes later, Rob Egan netted the game-winner for the Cougars.

TC Central 4
Marquette 3

Greg Merica's second goal of the game proved to be the winner as Traverse City Central posted a 4-3 road win at Marquette.

Sam Kelly and Matt Madion also tallied for the Trojans, who led 3-1 at half. Kelly finished with two assists. Merica and Luke McGreaham had one assist.

Central's Dane Macdonell celebrated his birthday with eight saves in goal.

Tony Hicks led the defensive effort for the Trojans, now 3-1.

Central's JV Gold claimed a 3-2 win. Nick Wright scored two goals for the Trojans, including the winner late in the game. Frank Dituri also tallied. Briggs Chapman was in goal.

Mark Madion and Alex Gore played strong games for Central.

Central's Black JV played Marquette to a 3-3 tie. Jordan Detar and Neil Beauchamp each had a goal and an assist. Kevin Trippe scored the tying goal midway through the second half. The Black, sparked by Luke Grof and Bennett Weckler, had Ben Mansfield in goal.

Benzie Central 5
Reed City 0

Andrew Addis scored a hat trick and added an assist as Benzie Central remained undefeated with a 5-0 shutout of Reed City.

Alec Heinrick and Ian VanDeperre each scored goals for the Huskies (5-0), while Adam Wordan had three assists and Nick Radionoff one helper.

Steve Smendzuik made 10 saves in net for the shutout.

Kalkaska 7
East Jordan 0

Ed Smith and Mike Brady each scored two goals as Kalkaska downed East Jordan 7-0.

Single goals for the Blazers came from Mason Moses, Tyler O'Neil and Colton Gelinas.

Jordan Hagen and Tailee Fick combined to make 33 saves for East Jordan.

Forest Area 3
Burt Lake NMCA 1

Marco Martinez found the back of the net twice to lead Forest Area to a 3-1 win over Burt Lake Northern Michigan Christian Academy.

Luke Rookus added the other goal and assists went to Mitch Core, San Runkel and Pat Hamilton.

Aaron Chatfield scored Burt Lake's goal.

Max Galea made 3 saves for the Warriors (4-2, 3-1 Northern Michigan Soccer League).

CROSS COUNTRY

Trojans win meet at Ogemaw Heights

The Traverse City Central boys won the Dwayne Rau Memorial Invitational at Ogemaw Heights for the 14th time in 15 years.

The Trojans finished with 29 points.

Central's Jacob Secor was the overall winner in 16:36. That's the fastest time for a Central runner in the meet. Andrew Manning ran a 16:37 in 2002. Central's Alex Lance placed third (17:29), Dustin Sabins fifth (17:31), James Padden ninth (17:51) and Mark Alanson 11th (17:57).

Elk Rapids won the boys and girls Division 2-3 races.

The girls won the 12-team meet with 61 points. Junior Amanda Hammer won the event for the third time in her varsity career (19:53). Other Elks placers were Sam Stites (11th, 22:55), Sydney Vandeveer (15th, 23:15), Molly Star (16th, 23:18) and Leah Harrington (19th, 23:30).

Cadillac, which was second, was led by runner-up Katelynn Patterson (19:59) and third-place finisher Katie Vanderbelde (20:12).

The Elks' boys team posted 78 points. Jim Janisse was second overall (17:28). He was followed by Tom Lucas (7th, 17:38), Jake Mills (12th, 18:01), Ryan Sundberg (17th, 18:17) and Dylan Sundberg (43rd, 20:03).

Central girls second at Rochester Adams

The Traverse City Central girls beat defending Division 1 state champion Rochester Adams en route to a second-place finish in the Rochester Adams Invitational.

Brighton posted the low team score with a 36. Central had 44 points and Adams 65.

Adams' Cally Macumber was the overall winner in 19:08. Central's Taylor Mattarella, who was celebrating her 16th birthday, and Julia Otwell were second and third overall in 19:16 and 19:19, respectively. The Trojans had seven other runners in the top 30 — Katie Perkins was eighth (20:03), Emily Westerman 14th (20:46), Jamie Chapman 18th (21:13), Charnele Lyons 19th (21:15), Aimee Marsh 22nd (21:23) and Courtney Firman 29th (21:44).

St. Francis boys second at Birch Run

The St. Francis boys finished second to Clio in the 15-team Birch Run Invitational.

For the Gladiators, Alex Primeau took seventh, James Alpers 10th, Kevin Kane 29th, Ricky Woods 37th and Dan Nolan-Bliss 46th

The girls were fifth. Katie Olsen and Morgan McCardel finished second and third overall in 21:07.

SWIMMING

West qualifies for state in five events

Traverse City West had four individuals and one relay team qualify for the state meet during a dual with Jenison.

Jenison won the meet 110-74.

Qualifying for the state meet were Amy Brunner in the 50 freestyle (25.48) and 100 butterfly (1:00.87); Erin Holstad in the 200 freestyle (2:00.39) and 100 breaststroke (1:09.38); and Sarah Brunner, Shelby Newhouse, Amy Brunner and Shea Williams in the 200 medley relay (1:56.01).

Brunner won the 50 freestyle and 100 butterfly in the meet with Jenison. The 200 medley relay was also victorious.

The Traverse City Central JV cruised to an 8-0 win over Glen Lake.

Victorious for Central: Chris Heimburger (6-0, 6-2), Matt Coleman (6-0, 6-0), Matt Shaw (6-0, 6-2), Colton Cartwright (6-3, 6-3), Duncan Cooper and Jack Raymond (6-1, 6-2), Bill Korreck and Caleb Morgan (6-0, 6-0) and Zak Miller and Clark Phelps (6-0, 6-0).

Leland 1

Sparked by a sweep in doubles, the Traverse City West Green junior varsity defeated Leland 6-1.

Notching victories in doubles for the Titans (2-0) were Joel Collins/Tyler Ramsby at No. 1 (6-0, 6-0), Luke Hessler/Trevor Tooley at No. 2 (6-0, 6-1) and Alec Aja/Kyle Hughey at No. 3 (6-0, 6-1).

Singles winners included No. 1 Carter Payne (6-3, 6-2), No. 2 Chase Mather (6-2, 6-1) and No. 4 Kam Wood (6-0, 6-1).

Cadillac JV 3

The Traverse City West Gold junior varsity edged the Cadillac JVs 5-3.

Posting singles wins for the Titans were James Owens at No. 3 (6-7, 7-6, 6-3) and Ryan Williamson at No. 4 (3-6, 6-3, 6-0).

Claiming the top three doubles flights were Tyler Markin/David Feiger (6-4, 7-6), Matt White/Sam Sanderson (6-2, 6-3) and Drew Van Drie/Kam Mills (7-5, 7-5).

VOLLEYBALL

Buckley 3
Northport 0

Buckley swept former Cherryland Conference rival Northport 25-8, 25-8, 25-13.

The Bears (2-2) were led by Norah Chalker (8 kills, 5 aces), Stephanie Burkett (4 kills, 4 aces) and Haley Cassey (15 assists).

Trojans 3-3 at Cadillac

Traverse City Central lost in the finals of the silver bracket in the Cadillac Invitational on Thursday.

In pool play, Alma defeated TC Central 25-10, 25-19, Otsego downed the Trojans 7-25, 25-16, 9-15 and Central topped Pine River 26-24, 25-14.

In the silver brackets, the Trojans downed Hart 25-10, 25-17 in the quarterfinals, defeated Chippewa Hills 25-19, 25-20 in the semis and dropped a 25-17, 18-25, 15-12 match to Saginaw Nouvel int he finals.

Leading players for the Trojans included: Laura Spencer (19 blocks, 23 kills, 16 aces), Maddie Lagina (87 assists) and Meredith Aja (27 kills, 14 digs).

The Trojans are 9-5, 0-1 in the Big North Conference.
