Workshops

• The Institute for Trade in the Americas and Michigan State University will co-sponsor a workshop for Michigan companies interested in marketing to Canada on July 26 at the Grand Traverse Resort & Spa. The free event will include sessions on NAFTA, finding Canadian trade partners, border crossing regulations and more. More information is available at www.tradingwithcanada.msu.edu

Personnel file

• Kristi Abbey-Jorns, a group portfolio manager with Huntington's Trust and Investment division, has been promoted to staff officer. Her new responsibilities include management of customer portfolios based on client objectives, recommending investment strategies and providing ongoing customer service and business development.

• Certified Public Accountant Daniel J. Beutler has been promoted to vice president of Accounting and controller at Hagerty Insurance.

Beutler will continue to oversee the day-to-day operations of the accounting department, including the preparation of monthly management reports and coordination of the annual audit and tax returns. His expanded role will include coordination of the annual budget process, participation in strategic planning and he will also serve as the risk manager for Hagerty.

• Tom Hess recently joined the Bill Marsh Automotive Group as a sales and leasing consultant at Bill Marsh Buick, Pontiac, GMC.

Prior to joining the Bill Marsh organization, the Traverse City resident was president of Hess Training and Consulting Services, Inc., which focused on the automotive and manufacturing industries.

• Chris Withey has recently joined the Bill Marsh Automotive Group as a sales consultant at the Price Point East Used Car Super Center. Withey has been involved in sales for more than 15 years in the Traverse City area.

• WDWeb/MorePhotos of Traverse City, recently hired Harry Markel. He will play a role in expanding the company's reach into the U.S. photography business. Markel brings over 25 years experience in producing sales and marketing for Fuji Professional Products and was director of operations and sales for one of the nation's leading professional digital imaging labs.

New location

• Higher Grounds Trading Company will move its business to The Village at Grand Traverse Commons in July. In addition to moving and expanding their coffee roasting production, company founders Chris and Jody Treter of Leelanau County, will also open an aficionado's coffee bar offering an espresso menu and a selection of handcrafted single origin brewed coffees.

Associations

• Shelley A. Kester, of Wilson & Kester, PLC in Traverse City, recently was elected to the Grand Traverse Leelanau Antrim Bar Association Board of Governors.

Her term begins July 19 and continues through June 30, 2010. The bar association serves as the local governing body for attorneys practicing in the three county area, funds the Traverse Area Referral Service and sponsors Law Day.

• Gusto's Quality Systems of Fife Lake has been awarded ISO-9001 certification from AQSR International, Inc. Gusto's is a sorting and rework company that serves the automotive and manufacturing industry.
