A legacy of Irish music times three

Legacy plays in Elk Rapids, TC and Frankfort

Special to the Record-Eagle

TRAVERSE CITY —Think about the music that flows from Mississippi and you probably think the blues. Maybe Southern rock.

It's time to think again.

Legacy, with deep Southern roots in Mississippi and New Orleans, is making a name for itself as a talented group of traditional Irish musicians. Legacy has three performances coming up in the area this month as part of a 10-day, 12-performance Michigan tour.

The group's fourth Michigan tour is in the trio format (An Triréad), with Don Penzien on guitar, bodhran and whistles; fiddler Valerie Plestad and Justin Murphy on flute and whistles. All share vocal duties.

"We so much look forward to visiting Michigan every year. It's great to have the opportunity to play in so many of the same places that Michiganders like to vacation.” said Plested.

Legacy will perform at 8 p.m.:

• July 15 at the Elk Rapids Townhall. Tickets are $12 in advance and $15 at the door and are available at Chef Charles, The Corner Druggist, Traverse Brewing Company and Oryana Food Cooperative.

• July 18 at InsideOut Gallery in Traverse City. Tickets are $12 in advance at Insideout Gallery, Cuppa Joe's and Oryana Food Cooperative or $15 at the door..

• July 19 at Rhonda's Wharfside in Frankfort. Tickets are $12 advance at Rhonda's Wharfside, Frankfort Bookstore and Oryana Food Cooperative or $15 at the door.

Legacy's latest album, An Triréad ("the trio”) was recorded in New Orleans (pre-Hurricane Katrina) and in Alexandria, Virginia (post-Hurricane Katrina).
