07/26/2007Business in briefRetailers look to third quarter salesTRAVERSE CITY Michigan retailers are cautiously optimistic about their third-quarter sales outlook that includes the back-to-school shopping season. The quarterly retail sales index from the Michigan Retailers Association released Wednesday shows about half of the retailers surveyed expect July through September sales to increase from last year, while 22 percent expect sales to decline and 25 percent anticipate no change. Retailers surveyed in the Traverse City area were especially upbeat, as 70 percent anticipate higher third-quarter sales compared to 20 percent expecting sales declines. That's the highest percentage among the 11 regions surveyed by the MRA for the index. In sharp contrast was the Gaylord area, where only 25 percent of retailers expect better third-quarter sales which was the lowest total in the state. Half of the businesses surveyed in Gaylord expect no change in third-quarter sales. Retailers in Traverse City also reported solid sales figures in June, with 60 percent seeing increased sales from 2006 compared to 30 percent reporting sales declines. In Gaylord, half of the businesses surveyed reported higher sales last month, while a quarter said sales were down and the other quarter reported no change.
