Grass River Natural Area plans activities

BELLAIRE — The Interpretive Cabin at Grass River Natural Area will be open seven days a week beginning Monday and the natural area will offer a variety of activities in June.

The cabin is staffed by naturalists from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday and Sunday.

Naturalist Franny Bluhm will lead a field trip at 10 a.m. Saturday. The group will hike the Jordan River Pathway to observe wildflowers in bloom. Registration is required.

Families are encouraged to put away their guide books for "Zen Naturalist Walks” that will be offered at 10 a.m. Mondays, June 11 through Aug. 27. Each week, participants will explore ways of refocusing their senses and reconnecting with the natural world The walks are free and registration is not required.

Adults and teens are invited to a volunteer orientation at 1 p.m. June 14. Participants will find out about the ways to help at the natural area. For details or if planning to attend, call the natural area.

A "Bike and Hike” will be offered at 10 a.m. June 16 for adults and children 12 and older. Some recent bike riding experience is desirable and participants should bring a bike (preferably a mountain bike) and walking shoes. Registration is required.

Families are invited to a Father's Day Hike at 2 p.m. June 17. The event is free, but registration is required.

Grass River Natural Area is open from dawn to dusk seven days a week. It is located on County Road 618, five miles south of Bellaire. For details or to register for activities, call 533-8314.
