Grant to help promote economic growth

BOYNE CITY — A $20,000 federal grant will pay for a feasibility study on establishment of a business incubator to promote job creation and economic development in Antrim, Charlevoix, Emmet and Cheboygan counties.

The grant announced Wednesday by the Michigan Economic Development Corp. will fund the study through the four-county Northern Lakes Economic Alliance regional economic development agency. The funds are made available through a federal Community Development Block Grant program.

Jan Kellogg, an economic development specialist for the alliance, said the study will look at costs and other factors for starting a local business incubator network in the four-county area. Business incubators are typically large buildings or spaces where a collection of small or start-up businesses can rent space for reasonable rates and share resources to save money.

Kellogg said the study will look at the need for a business incubator space in the area, development costs and potential locations for the project. The study should take about a year to complete, she said.
