Chamber honors area's top educators

TRAVERSE CITY — Ten teachers, administrators and support staff members from area schools and Northwestern Michigan College were honored in the annual Outstanding Educator awards presented by the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce.

The chamber initiated the awards program in 1984 to recognize top teachers and other school staff members throughout Grand Traverse, Antrim, Benzie, Kalkaska and Leelanau counties. The 2007 awards were presented Wednesday night at the Milliken Auditorium at NMC.

Honorees in the teacher category were Becky Gagnon of Traverse City West Senior High School, Mary Lou Landry of Leland Public School, Matt Price of Birch Street Elementary School, Terri Reisig of Elk Rapids High School and Terry Smith of Old Mission Elementary School.

Winners in the support staff category included Deb Hartzel of Interlochen Community School, Cecilia Wise of Immaculate Conception Elementary School and Tom Richards of the Traverse City bus garage.

In the administrator category, Ron Hoth of Traverse City High School was honored with Terry Sievert of Northwestern Michigan College.

The awards were presented by Mike Hill, superintendent of the Traverse Bay Area Intermediate School District.
