Roots music on the farm

Black Cat series season underway

tcarr@record-eagle.com

CHARLEVOIX — It's only fitting that roots music would grow out of a third-generation family farm that once raised dairy cattle and strawberries.

The Black Cat Concerts series, now in its second season, is hosted by Carl and Cornelia Dhaseleer on land just three miles south of Charlevoix that the Dhaseleer family has farmed since 1925. The name of the series derives from the fact that a lot of black cats lived on the farm when it had dairy cattle.

"We don't do much farming ourselves anymore,” Carl Dhaseleer said.

Carl has been running a taxidermy shop out of the barn, while Cornelia has been making and selling pottery out of a separate farm building. Last year, they decided to start hosting concerts there.

"The inspiration is at least 10 years old because we always knew the barn had some potential and we love music,” Cornelia said.

The lineup offers a mix of bluegrass, Irish, country and some rock, though "not the kind you hear at the bar,” he said.

Last year, concert-goers mostly sat outside. Now, the renovation of the barn is complete and has seating for about 40 people, with capacity for about 195 in the barn and 500 on the lawn. Carl recommends bringing folding chairs.

The barn, built in the 1890s, has been converted to workshop space below and event space above with a hardwood dance floor and band stage. It will be rented out for weddings and other events, too.

The concerts scheduled to be presented yet this summer are:

• The Walloons, Sunday, July 1.

• Switchback and Hannah Stoppel, Sunday, July 8.

• Millish and Breathe Owl Breathe, Thursday, July 12.

• The Bluewater Ramblers, Sunday, July 22.

• Whit Hill & Bob Hausler, Friday, Aug. 3.

• Neptune Quartet and Robin Lee Berry, Sunday, Aug. 12.
