Elected as president is Lisa Martek, with Bill Barnett as vice president. The treasurer is Deborah Ballard, and serving as secretary is Amber Carroll. Rounding out the board are Jean Nicholas, Laura Fichtner, David Fichtner, Wendy Galloway, John Martek and Mike Galloway, who also is the Cadillac Footliters' executive director. The Michigan Retailers Association awarded a $1,000 scholarship to Alyxandria Briggs of Williamsburg, a sophomore at Grand Valley State University. She is employed at association member Harbor Wear of downtown Traverse City. New business Joe and Tammy Fischer have opened the Fischer Insurance Agency at 125 Ames St. in Elk Rapids, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony set for Friday at 9 a.m. It's an independent insurance agency specializing in auto, home, commercial, life and health. The Fischers have nine licensed agents working out of offices in Bellaire, Mancelona and now Elk Rapids. Joe Tanis of Traverse City has opened a new boat livery, American Boat Rentals. Based at Long Lake Marina in Interlochen, the company will deliver any of a selection of ski boats, pontoons and Yamaha wave runners to those wishing to rent a boat, and the team at American Boat Rentals will deliver to any northwest Michigan lake with a boat ramp. Grand Traverse Distillery of Traverse City, a micro-distillery for vodka, is introducing its True North Vodka this month, with approximately 2,000 bottles being distributed to local retailers. Main St. in the space formerly occupied by The Tin Soldier gift shop. Awards Peninsula Cellars won a "chairman's award gold medal for its 2005 Manigold Gewurztraminer wine at the 26th annual Riverside International Wine Competition. The winery also took three silver medals at the competition. George and Pam Brown, owners of the Traverse City-area Homes & Land magazine franchise, were named to the company's "President's Club for top affiliates. The Browns publish four Homes & Land print and online publications and distribute more than 1 million magazines a year. Critter Control Inc. of Traverse City was ranked as the 20th-largest pest control firm in the U.S. by Pest Control Technology magazine. Kevin Clark founded the company 25 years ago and started franchising in 1987, and now has more than 100 franchisees.
