• Wayne Schmidt of Traverse City has been selected for Michigan State University's Michigan Political Leadership Program.

A Grand Traverse County commissioner, Schmidt is one of 24 state residents enrolled in the 10-month curriculum on practical politics, public policy analysis and process, personal leadership development and effective governance.

• Attorney Shelley A. Kester of Wilson & Kester, PLC in Traverse City and paralegal Dawn M. Draper are featured speakers for the Institute of Continuing Legal Education's fourth annual Solo and Small Firm Institute Conference taking place Sept. 27-28 at DeVos Place in Grand Rapids.

Kester is a frequent commentator and speaker for ICLE and a past member of the State Bar of Michigan's Committee on Domestic Violence.

• Interior designer Shane Inman of The Inman Company has joined Northern Contract Interiors in Traverse City as president of the company's newly formed Hospitality and Residential divisions.

The company's new division will provide furnishings, architectural products, space planning and interior design services to casinos, hotels, condominiums, restaurants and resorts.

Awards

• Phoinix Enterprises Inc. and Tribal Precision Performance on Aero Park Drive in Traverse City received a Clean Corporate Citizen designation from the state Department of Environmental Quality. State officials said various environmental measures taken by the company has led to a 73 percent reduction in electricity use and a reduction of 1,500 gallons of oil by the facility. The company president is Randy Rodes.

Appointments

• Larry Inman was re-appointed to the state's Community Corrections Board by Gov. Jennifer Granholm through March 2011. Inman, a Grand Traverse County commissioner, has served on the board since 1994 and as chairman since 1999. The board provides $30 million annually to Michigan counties for jail alternative and rehabilitation services.

Recognition

• Stephen B. Selden, a financial representative with The Western Michigan Group of the Northwestern Mutual Financial Network in Petoskey, has qualified for membership in the Million Dollar Round Table, an international, independent association of life insurance producers.
