05/11/2007NMC gets ready for annual barbecueFaculty/alumni reception added to this year's festivitiesTRAVERSE CITY The 51st Northwestern Michigan College Barbecue on Sunday, May 20, will have an added feature just for alumni. A reception for alumni to greet current and retired faculty will be held from noon to 2 p.m. in Room 101 of the Health/Science Building on the main campus. In addition to several current faculty members, retired faculty members expected to attend include Julie Medlin, Walt & Elaine Beardslee, Ken Marek, Bill Faulk, Betty Carden, Al Shumsky, Bill Scharf and Lynn Harris. Also at the reception, members of the college's class of 1957 will be recognized as part of the celebration of their class's 50th anniversary. Another highlight will be the display of a new collection of historic images. It all happens against the backdrop of the barbecue, which runs from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. In addition to the traditional menu of buffalo steakettes, baked beans, potato salad, coleslaw, ice cream, coffee, milk and soda, entertainment is provided all day. The schedule includes the Traverse City Central High School Choral Aires at 11 a.m.; Ryan Dobry's Diamond & Denim Dancers at 12:15 p.m.; Sour Mash at 1:30 p.m.; Blind Dog Hank at 2:45 p.m.; and Rusty Blades at 4 p.m. Children's games and activities will be held, and both the Dennos Museum Center and Rogers Observatory are open to the public at no charge. Tickets are $5 in advance at NMC, Oleson's Food Stores, local financial institutions, area elementary schools, the Traverse City Area Chamber of Commerce and Traverse City Convention and Visitors Bureau, Terrace Shopper, Holiday Shopper (Acme) and Elmbrook Golf Course; price at the door will be $6.
