The Bear River Canoe Livery

From its origin at the eastern edge of Walloon Lake, the Bear River winds through the landscape for approximately twelve miles before reaching Petoskey and emptying into Little Traverse Bay. To explore this scenic river more closely bring your sunscreen and a water-proof camera.

The Bear River Canoe Livery is located about a mile outside the Petoskey city limit, off McDougall Road. The livery offers one, two, and four-hour canoe and kayak trips down the river. Pack a lunch, bring a cooler, and make a day of it.

Individuals with basic canoe skills can enjoy this gently flowing river while glimpsing wildlife such as beaver, otter, and the official state reptile, the Painted Turtle. Various species of trout live in the cool waters. Along the shoreline watch for deer, rabbits, and on rare occasions, even a black bear.

From Memorial Day through Labor Day, the livery is staffed seven days a week from 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. During the off-season, canoe trips can be arranged by appointment. For more information call the Bear River Canoe Livery at 231-347-9038.
