Have you been on this day trip? Do you have photos to share? and we may publish your shots on this page. The Bay TheatreWondering when any "good" movies are going to come to our area? Wishing you could have some say in the caliber of entertainment offered? Surprisingly enough, one of the state's most progressive and distinctive cinemas can be found right in little Suttons Bay. The Bay Theatre was established as a movie house in the late 1950s, and this renovated, Victorian-inspired theater has been independently operated by Suttons Bay's own Bahle family since 1976. Its warm, well-appointed lobby and welcoming, comfortable theatre contribute to an air of luxury and appreciation, both for art and for its patrons. The nicely equipped stage has hosted countless civic players' productions and other community events, while the excellent quality movie screen makes already great films even better. The Bay also boasts a sophisticated sound system that rivals that of any large cinema chain. The HPS-4000 system is the only one of its kind in the state. Manager Bob Bahle has the independent advantage, which allows him to hand pick a wide range of films: well-known and obscure, American and foreign, independents and major motion pictures. Whether the latest blockbuster, a European sleeper or an edgy new documentary, Bob goes with his gut. "If a film captures my attention and captivates me, I get it," he said. He even encourages audience input. If there's a film you can't wait to see - mainstream or avant guarde - Bahle wants to hear from you. To find out what's playing or to suggest a film to play at The Bay, call 271-3772 or visit www.leelanau.com/thebay. The Bay Theatre is open seven days a week. Beyond the Bay Film SeriesIf you're worried that cultural opportunities will shrivel along with the summer sun - never fear. The Beyond the Bay Film Series has you covered during the colder months. Now in its seventh season, Beyond the Bay is dedicated to bringing high quality, award-winning films that people would not normally get to see because of their lower commercial draw. In order to offset the high costs of obtaining and promoting these lesser-known films, Beyond the Bay is a subscription series that provides patrons with tickets to any eight of the series' nine films. Tickets to the remaining ninth film are available to subscribers for $5 at the door, if they choose. These films are the "very best of the newest International and American films: films whose characters have complex motivations; films that present provocative ideas; and films that are innovative in their structure and cinematography." Beyond the Bay Film Series is its own non-profit organization, using the Bay Theatre as their viewing venue. One film is shown each month from September to May. Screening times are Sunday at 3 & 6 p.m. and Monday & Tuesday at 6 p.m. To subscribe, learn more, or check out this season's film line-up visit www.beyondthebay.org or call 256-2550. |
