Welcome to NIE

The Newspapers in Education (NIE) program is a cooperative effort between the Traverse City Record-Eagle, area schools, and local businesses, providing in-classroom interaction with the daily paper. Through this living textbook, dynamic and updated every day, NIE creates a bridge between the classroom and the community.

Motivational and engaging, newspapers compel readers to think about the world and the role they play in it.  As your community newspaper, the Record-Eagle provides the comprehensive information students need to understand the institutions, public figures, and issues underlying the foundation of our community.  Though the activities may differ, the usefulness of the newspaper has been proven from kindergarten through twelfth grade.

In addition to classroom newspapers, NIE provides:
• Curriculum materials that support the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks
• Original language arts, math, and science programs.
• Economical, effective and exciting teaching vehicles
• Generation Why, the Record-Eagle teen page
• The Mini-Page, a weekly, educational children´s section in the Sunday paper
• Tours of the Record-Eagle production and distribution facility
