C.L.E.A.N. Water Classroom Experience

Freshwater Focus
C.L.E.A.N. Water begins in October with the publication of Freshwater Focus.  This 16-page, full-color tabloid introduces and explains the eight hottest topics affecting our watershed, along with tips for getting involved in the conservation and preservation of our area´s greatest resource, and online resources for additional information.  This will also feature a pullout illustration of the Grand Traverse Watershed with highlighted facts and statistics about the region.  *If you would like a classroom-size poster of this illustration, contact the NIE Manager.

Not only will this publication be inserted into the Sunday Record-Eagle, additional copies will be available for student use.

Monthly Activities
Every month from October through May, the Record-Eagle will feature a different topic and current event related to the health of our watershed.  To help teachers bring this topic into the classroom, NIE will provide a week of in-classroom activities designed by teachers around the state of Michigan.

The schedule for these topics is as follows:
October:   What is a Watershed?
November:   Nutrients
December:   Sediments
January:   Invasive Species
February:   Toxics
March:   Land Use impacts
April:   Stormwater
May:   Beach/Public Health

Supplemental Sharing
As you look at the C.L.E.A.N. Water activities, you´ll see that each week ends with the submission of student work to the Record-Eagle.  To encourage students to voice their opinions and to continue to educate our community water quality issues, we will publish two supplemental tabloids featuring student submissions.

The second tabloid will be published in conjunction with an end-of-the-year open house displaying student work submitted from all participating classrooms.  Stay tuned for details on the Open House.

For more information or to enroll your classroom in C.L.E.A.N. Water, contact the NIE Manager or call (231) 933-1402.
