The Spelling Bee

After an exciting season last year, we're looking forward to the 2005 Grand Traverse Regional Spelling Bee to be held in Traverse City at the Dennos Museum on March 20, 2005 at 1 p.m.

Leading up to the big event are six spelling bees held at the county level, and numerous bees held by individual schools across northern Michigan.

THE 2005 COUNTY BEE SCHEDULE WILL BE POSTED IN OCTOBER.

About the Bee.

The Record-Eagle Spelling Bee season is open to students attending public, private, parochial, charter, and home schools. It´s purpose is to help students improve their spelling, increase their vocabularies, and develop correct English usage that will help them all their lives.

The Record-Eagle sponsors an annual Regional Spelling Bee for Antrim, Benzie, Charlevoix, Emmet, Kalkaska, Leelanau, and Grand Traverse counties. Participants must be a student at a level equivalent to 5th through 8th grades and must have not reached their 16th birthday on or before the date of the national finals.

The winner of the Regional Spelling Bee is sent to Washington, D.C. to represent northern Michigan in the Scripps Howard National Spelling Bee. The National Spelling Bee involves more than ten million students at the local level and over 240 national finalists.
