The Stock Market Game

The Stock Market Game is a practical approach to learning key aspects of economics. The objective of the game is to learn practical lessons about investing, while having fun. Student teams are "given" $10,000 to buy and sell stocks as a mechanism to learn about such issues as investments, relationships in the economy, and the laws of supply and demand. Local stockbrokers assist in tallying results and provide guidance upon request. The Game is completely flexible and may be adapted in the classroom for grades four through twelve.

Students participating in the Stock Market Game will learn:
   • How to select stocks
   • How to monitor price changes
   • How to make buy and sell decisions
   • The importance of monitoring
   • The importance of cutting losses
   • How to read financial quotes in the newspaper
   • Understanding financial markets and various industries in the economy
   • Increased confidence
   • How to be a team player

To participate in the game, you will want to plan on two initial classroom sessions for selecting stocks and monitoring prices.  Following the introductory period, the game takes approximately 15 minutes a week -- or as much time as you want to spend -- for comparisons, discussions of difficult decisions and trading results.

To get your classroom started, you just need the following materials:
   • Sunday Record-Eagle with stock quotes
   • Team monitoring and activity sheets
   • Summary sheets to report weekly results
   • Team standing sheets/graph
