NIE for Teachers

The newspaper is commonly considered to make its greatest educational contribution to reading, language arts, and social studies. However, the newspaper provides unique avenues to reach students in fields such as math, science, and economics. A math teacher may ask students to figure sports percentages, a science teacher may task students with charting daily developments in a watershed project, and an economics teacher may integrate stories on fluctuating unemployment rates to demonstrate linkages between various economic factors.

Through this living textbook, dynamic and updated every day, NIE creates a bridge between the classroom and the community. In addition to classroom newspapers, NIE provides:
   • Curriculum materials that support the Michigan Curriculum Frameworks
   • Original language arts, math, and science programs.
   • Economical, effective and exciting teaching vehicles
   • Generation Why, the Record-Eagle teen page
   • The Mini-Page, a weekly, educational children´s section in the Sunday paper
   • Tours of the Record-Eagle production and distribution facility

The Record-Eagle NIE Manager is available to conduct workshops on using the newspaper in your classroom. Workshops are designed to fit individual needs in terms of length (one-hour to half-day sessions), subject matter (general or a focus on subjects such as economics, language arts, math, or social studies), and size (from one to 30 teachers). Workshops can be held at your school, during career development sessions, or at the Record-Eagle.

The NIE Manger is also available to visit your classroom to discuss a variety of topics that will help your students understand the newspaper.
