MARIE 'MICKEY' BERRY, 66, of Benzonia, died at her home Saturday evening, Nov. 28, 1998.
Friends may call at the time of services which will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday from Crystal Lake Baptist Church in Frankfort. Interment will be in the Benzonia Township Cemetery. The family was served by the Perry Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia.
ROBERT 'BEAN BOB' DUJARDIN, 56, of Buckley, died at his home Monday, Nov. 30, 1998.
Arrangements will be announced by the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingley in the Wednesday Record-Eagle.
LLOYD E. GIBSON, 80, died Sunday, Nov. 29, 1998, at his home in Cedar. He was born Nov. 29, 1918.
Arrangements are by the Hibbard-Ruggles Funeral Home of Traverse City.
EILEEN M. PARSONS, 64, of Grayling, died Saturday, Nov. 28, 1998, at Boulder Park Terrace in Charlevoix.
Friends may visit from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling. A funeral Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling.
NILE C. SPEARS JR., 79, of Traverse City, died Monday morning, Nov. 30, 1998, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Arrangements are pending at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
Bernice G. Fry
Died November 25, 1998
SAN CLEMENTE, Calif. - Bernice G. Fry of San Clemente and formerly of Empire, Mich., died Wednesday at San Clemente Hospital and Medical Center in San Clemente.
She was born June 4, 1913, the daughter of George R. and Candace (Purdy) Gates.
Prior to moving California, she resided in Empire with her former husband, Alfred Fry, who survives. Alfred and Bernice owned and operated Fry's General Grocery Store in Empire.
In March of 1949, Bernice was employed by the Veterans Administration Hospital at Sepulveda, Calif., in dietetics. On June 8, 1962, she was awarded a certificate of superior performance. During her faithful service at the Veterans Hospital - until the time of her retirement on June 3, 1974 - she received five letters of commendation in addition to the certificate of superior performance
Survivors include her cousins, Warren R. Aylsworth of Empire; Helen Aylsworth Scully of Deltona, Fla., and Glenn Aylsworth of Traverse City, Mich.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Charles Gates. Bernice was the niece of Alonzo G. Aylsworth and Gladys (Purdy) Aylworth who also preceded her in death.
She will be interred in Forest Lawn Memorial-Park in Glendale, Calif., in the family lot.
Rachel Mildred (Springer) Graves
Died November 28, 1998
PHOENIX, Ariz. - Rachel Mildred (Springer) Graves, 90, formerly of Traverse City, Mich., passed away Saturday in Phoenix where she had been living with her daughter, Barbara (Walter) Rector.
Rachel is also survived by her children, Lena (Alvis) Morris of Texas, Earlene (James) Gage of Arkansas, Hattie Lapar of Traverse City, Bill (Sharon) Graves of Kingsley, Mich., Norman (Ruth) Graves of Traverse City, Russell (Denise) Graves of Elhart, Ind., and Carlton (Barbara) Graves of Orlando, Fla.; 30 grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren
Rachel was preceded in death by her husband, Leo, in 1978, and a grandson, Billy Graves.
Cremation has taken place.

Charlene Ann Hesse
Died November 27, 1998
EAST LANSING - Charlene Ann Hesse, 53, died Friday
She was born July 11, 1945, in Traverse City. She had been employed by the Michigan Family Independence Agency in the Disability Determination Service.
Survivors include her husband, Richard Hesse; her father, R.J. Sniff of Haslett; and her brother, Robert Sniff, and his two children, Eric and Randy Sniff - all of Traverse City.
Charlene was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy, and her brother, Lonnie.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Wednesday at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
Those wishing to make a contribution in her memory may do so through her charity, the Salvation Army.

Talmage Ernest 'Tal' Provins
Died November 28, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY- Talmage Ernest "Tal" Provins passed away Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with family at his side.
Tal was born March 22, 1912, in Marion County, Ala., the fourth child of Russell and Mary Provins.
Tal was a veteran of the World War II; he served three years in Africa and Europe, earning a bronze star. Tal loved all things outdoors and working with his hands. Tal was well known for his sense of humor and always having a joke ready for his audience. Tal enjoyed his years in Michigan, spending time with his family, but always wanted to return to his home in Dekalb, Texas.
Tal grew up in Texas and on Feb. 5, 1936, he married Mary Cunningham.
Tal is survived by his son, Talmage Dwain (Wanda); his daughter, Wilma Gene Ross; grandchildren, Kim (Scott) Meteer, Gay (Scott) Frew, Gary (Karen) Provins, Don Ross, and Curt Ross; 13 great-grandchildren; his brothers, Robert (Geneva) Provins and J.C. (Gerri) Provins; and his sister, Billie Ray Veach.
Tal was preceded in death by his parents; wife; brothers, Alvin, Sanford, Cleon, Leburn, and J.R.; sister, Belvie; and grandson, Dennis.
Services will be held on Wednesday at the Bates Funeral Home in Dekalb, Texas.
In lieu of flowers, memorials should be given to Munson Hospice in Traverse City.
Charles W. Shinn
Died November 29, 1998
ANTRIM COUNTY - Charles W. Shinn, 84, of Echo Township, died Sunday at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
He was born August 24, 1914, in Chestonia Township, the son of George and Eva (Williams) Shinn.
Chuck served in the Civilian Conservation Corps (CCC) in the early 1930s. With Max Ellison and Bill Clow, he planted the white pine that still stands in the Clow yard - just south of the four corners in Ellsworth. Every year he planted several white pines at various places in Antrim County.
He married Sophie Radeka in 1940 in Mancelona and they made their home in Flint. They later moved to Mancelona. Sophie died in 1948. Chuck then moved back to Flint where he was employed at General Motors Chevrolet Truck Division. He retired in 1974. He was a member of UAW Local No. 598 in Flint.
Survivors include his daughters, O. Joanne Shinn of Central Lake, Barbara (Richard) Schneider of Flint, and Bethany Durocher-Shinn of Central Lake; seven grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; three sisters, Edith Olmsted of Freeland, Orpha Shinn of Toledo and Mancelona, and Alice Oshana of Chicago and Mancelona; a brother, Jason (Mary Lou) Shinn of Croswell; and special friends in the Ellison family, Florence, Edith, Margaret, John, Roy, and Andrew.
He was preceded in death by a brother, Wilbur Shinn, and a special friend from his CCC days, Max Ellison.
There will be no visitation. A memorial service will be held at a later date.

Charles Jennings Short
Died November 23, 1998
MANCELONA - Charles Jennings Short, 63, formerly of Mancelona, died Monday, Nov. 23, 1998, in Fredericksburg, Texas.
He was born on March 17, 1935, in BayIors Creek, Ky., the son of Howard and LuLu (Payne) Short.
He enjoyed his family and friends. From Michigan to Texas, he was truly loved and will be truly missed.
He is survived by two children, Charles Howard (Staci) Short and Darlene (Donald) Brown of Mesick; a stepson, Ricky Acosta of ManceIona; nine grandchildren, Charles Howard Jennings "C.J." Short of Mancelona, Ricky Brown of Mesick, Noah Brown of Mesick, David Brown of Mesick, Raeanne Brown of Mesick, Charlene "Charlie" Brown of Mesick, Holly Brown of Mesick, Ricky Acosta of Bandera, Texas, and Felicia Acosta of Bandera, Texas; and one brother, Bill Short of Waterford.
He was preceded in death by one stepson, Michael Acosta, in 1987.
The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona.

Margaret R. Stuck
Died November 28, 1998
KALKASKA - Margaret R. Stuck, 85, of Kalkaska, passed away Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Jan. 18, 1913, in Springfield Township, Kalkaska County, she was the daughter of Jacob and Frances (Cunningham) Perry.
Margaret was a devoted grandmother as well as a friend to her family. She enjoyed making and presenting numerous bears to her grandchildren. She was a good seamstress, and enjoyed making things for everyone. She will be sadly missed by all who enjoyed her wisdom through the years.
She is survived by a son, David (Irene Newmarch) Stremlow of Kingsley; nine grandchildren, David (Dorothy) Stremlow, Jerry Stremlow, Linda Glaesmer, Carol Stremlow, and Nancy (Pete) Bostwick - all of Traverse City, and Michael (Carla) Stremlow of Coleman, and Bonnie Roop, Ron Stremlow, and Susan (Larry) Bodjack - all of Kingsley. She is also survived by 22 great-grandchildren and two great-great-grandchildren. She will be missed by all the family members of her beloved Charlie Stuck. Also surviving are three brothers, Joe Perry of Lake City, Dave Perry of Stanwood, and Harry Perry of Manton; a sister, Johanna Whiteford of Traverse City; and several other family members.
She was preceded in death by her late husband, Charles Stuck; her parents, Jacob and Frances Perry; a brother, George Perry; and a sister, Effie Perry.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; Father Walter Derylo will officiate. Burial will be in Lodi Cemetery in Kalkaska County.

JoAnn M. Barnes
Died November 30, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - JoAnn M. Barnes, 67, died Monday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
She was born April 27, 1931, in Mason, the daughter of Harvey and Dolly (Force) Swaim.
JoAnn moved from Mason to Traverse City in 1964. She had been a beautician and also worked for R.L. Polk and Company. She retired from United Technologies after 12 years of service. JoAnn had been involved at Hillview Terrace and had attended Central United Methodist Church - both of Traverse City. She was a former member of her high school choir and loved playing the piano and music.
Survivors include her father, Harvey Swaim of Eaton Rapids; three daughters, Carol Sowders of Las Vegas, Nev., Bonnie Valerio of Vermontville, and Rosalie Kuchmuk of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren, Eric, Brian, Joann, Chad, Christopher, Greg, Jason, Julie, Sarah, and Jennifer; a sister, Joyce Foss of Mason; nieces; and nephews.
JoAnn was preceded in death by her mother, Dolly Swaim; brother, Charles Swaim; and her sister, Helen Carroll.
Friends may call an hour prior to funeral services which will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. The Rev. David Gabel of Bethlehem Lutheran Church will officiate. Burial will be in Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Okemos.
Memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society.

Clifford 'Chris' Brown
Died December 1, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - Clifford "Chris" Brown, 77, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
Born April 9, 1921, in Hillman, he was the son of William and Goldie (Bruce) Brown. In 1943, in Pontiac, he married Mary Thibodeau.
Chris was a resident of Traverse City for the past 10 years, moving from Waterford. He served in Europe from 1942 to 1945 with the 8th Infantry Division of the U.S. Army during World War II. He was a serviceman for Calgas Propane Co. in Pontiac for 34 years, retiring in 1978. A 1940 graduate of Brimley High School, he played on the basketball and baseball teams. He was a member of Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City and a former member of Sunnyvale Chapel in Waterford Township. Chris was an avid golfer and reader.
He was the beloved husband of Mary of Traverse City, who survives; and the beloved father of Jonathan "Jack" (Theresa) Brown of Pontiac and their children, Chad, Natalie, Nicholas, and John; and daughter Mariann (Richard) Marshall of West Bloomfield and their son, Eric.
Also surviving are four brothers Alva of Sault Ste. Marie, Fred and William Jr. - both of Waterford, and Milton of Durand; seven sisters, Dorothy Kellogge of Grayling, Leona Smythe of Port Huron, Shirley Ogston, Donna Sauro, and Penny Nertoli - all of Sault Ste. Marie, Joan Rodgers of Hampton, Va., and Carole Shannon of Durand; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home; Pastor Jack Steenbergh will officiate. Burial will be at Hillcrest Cemetery in Brimley.

Robert 'Bean Bob' DuJardin
Died November 30, 1998
BUCKLEY - Robert "Bean Bob" DuJardin died Monday at his home in Buckley.
He was born in Detroit on April 23, 1942, the son of Raymond and Rosemary (Garavaglia) DuJardin
Bob moved to Buckley from Bronson 12 years ago. He was a field foreman for Friday Canning (formerly Stokely Canning) in Scottville. He also worked at Patchwork Farms Trucking in Buckley. Bob enjoyed socializing with his friends and was an avid snowmobiler; he was a member of the Fraternal Organizations of Eagles Aerie No. 4389 in Kingsley.
Survivors include four daughters, Patty DuJardin of Kingsley, Cheryl (Kevin) Teall of Mesick, Lora DuJardin of Mesick, and Megan DuJardin of Mesick; his mother, Rose DuJardin of Mesick; a brother, Raymond (Marcella) DuJardin of Detroit; and four grandchildren, Michael, Brandon, Reanna, and Ryan,
He was preceded in death by his father.
The family will greet friends and share memories of Bob from 1 to 3 p.m. Saturday at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley.

Edmund C. Flees
Died November 27, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - Edmund C. Flees, 78, died Friday morning at his home in Traverse City.
Born in Cedar, he was the son of Daniel and Anastasia (Popa) Flees. On June 24, 1946, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Isadore, he married the former Mary E. Winowiecki.
Edmund was a veteran of World War II, serving in the U.S. Army where he received numerous decorations.
A retired meat cutter, he was also the former owner and operator of Flees Saw Sharpening Service. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City and a former basketball coach for St. Mary's of Hannah school in Kingsley.
He was a very active member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2780. He served twice as a commander of the VFW, was a captain of the honor guard, former chaplain, and a coordinator of the local post bulletin. He also served as the 13th District adjutant. Edmund served as bingo treasurer and operated concessions for Thursday bingo to benefit the Trojan booster club.
Survivors include four sons, Edmund C. (Judy) Flees II of Grand Rapids, Daniel J. Flees of Traverse City, David F. (Denise) Flees of Traverse City, and Jerome A. Flees of St. Petersburg, Fla.; two daughters, Judith A. (George) Rokos of Traverse City and Janice M. (John Jr.) Lage of Rochester, Minn.; two sisters, Dorothy Bussey and Elizabeth Bullis - both of Northport; two brothers, Sylvester Flees of St. Louis, Mo., and Lawrence Flees of Northport; 14 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a mother-in-law, Bertha Winowiecki of Traverse City; and many aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on March 5, 1993; his parents; and his brothers, Raymond, Alex, and Daniel Jr.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City; a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be held at noon Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church; the Rev. Father William Lipscomb will officiate. Burial will be in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City with full military honors under the auspices of the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780.

Eva (Foote) Heming
Died November 30, 1998
Eva W. Heming of Traverse City passed on Monday at the Michigan Masonic Nursing Home in Alma; she was 101 years young.
Born May 20, 1899, in Solon Township, Leelanau County, she spent her younger years in the Lansing and Detroit area. Eva finally settled in Port Huron where she raised two sons and established two businesses, the Dawn Beauty School and the American Home Dining Room, her "House by the Side of the Road," as it was affectionately known.
Always a giving person, her most rewarding efforts were recognized through her donations of care packages to American soldiers serving in Korea during that U.N. conflict from 1950-1953. She usually sent two or three packages randomly to various units in the war zone during these years. Baked goods seemed to be the favorite of the troops to whom she mailed her donations. For many years afterward, her "boys" would write to her or try to search her out just to say "thanks."
Eva was a gourmet cook and baker and in 1960 was a finalist in a Pillsbury Bake-Off that was held in Washington, D.C.
She spent many years writing articles for the Record-Eagle and the Leelanau Enterprise Tribune. Among her insertions were "Food for Body and Soul," which usually included a gourmet recipe, and "Day by Day," frequently accompanied with a religious thought. She was always there to help folks and her phone was always ringing.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Chester "Dad" Heming, and will be interred with him in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her younger sister (98), Georgia Renand; her two sons, Wallace (Connie) Heming of Port Huron and Don (Jean) Heming of Traverse City; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
There will be no viewing or religious service at this time. The family plans to hold a memorial service, with lunch provided, in the springtime.
The family asks that memorials not be sent at this time as there will be several opportunities to participate at the memorial service.

Nile C. Spears Jr.
Died November 30, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - Nile C. Spears Jr., 79, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born in Paducah, Ky., he was the son of Nile C. Spears Sr. and Maggie (Laxton) Spears. In 1940, in Paducah, he married Louise Davis. Nile married Nellie VanSanten in Traverse City on Dec., 7, 1991.
An infantryman who served in the U.S. Army during World War II, he was awarded the Bronze Star with oak-leaf cluster Medal seven times for heroic achievement in connection with military operations against the enemy on Okinawa Island.
Nile moved to the Detroit area as a young man. He was employed as a machinist for Ford Motor Co. for 35 years and retired in 1984. He moved to Traverse City in 1990 and became a member of Central United Methodist Church and the Westland Masonic Lodge No. 112
Survivors include his wife, Nellie of Traverse City; four daughters, Sandy Easterly of Jackson, Daleta (Jim) Blan of Taylor, Shari (Jack) Capehart of Traverse City, and Debra (Pat) Powers of Indiana; three stepchildren, Rekah Brown of Traverse City, Jan (Cheryl) VanSanten of Traverse City, and Trudy McNeil of Cadillac; three brothers, Bailey, Bill, and Leon Spears - all of Paducah; two sisters, Rebecca Tucker of Paducah and Cynthia Hartsoc of St. Louis, Mo.; 11 grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; 11 great-grandchildren; four stepgreat-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Nile was preceded in death by a daughter, Cachita Louise Spears; a stepson, Herman VanSanten; a grandson, Mark Allen Blan; two brothers, Joe and Egar Spears; and three sisters, Frieda Mae Hunt, Mildred Tucker, and Bessie Leiker.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Dean Bailey and Nile's son-in-law, Pat Powers, will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

MARGARET E. DOMRES, 78, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Dec. 1, 1998, in Manistee.

EDWIN L. OWENS, 72, of Port Charlotte, Fla., formerly of Grayling and Lenon, died Tuesday, December 1, 1998.

Lloyd E. Gibson
Died November 29, 1998
CEDAR - Lloyd E. Gibson, 80, of Cedar, died Sunday at home on his 80th birthday.
Born Nov. 29, 1918, in Solon, he was the son of Roy and Minnie (Perrault) Gibson. On June 29, 1957, in Traverse City, he married Jeanetta Whitehead.
Lloyd had lived his whole life in Leland until moving to Cedar three years ago. He worked as a self-employed master cabinet-maker and building contractor. He was an accomplished musician and guitarist. Lloyd also served as a boy scout leader.
Survivors include his wife, Jeanetta Gibson; four children, Wayne (Janice) Gibson of Valpariso, Ind., Barbara Norwood of Estes Park, Colo., Cheryl (Michael) McDaniel of Phoenix, Ariz., and Gerald (Ellen) Gibson of Leland; four stepchildren, Carl (Debbie) Hagstrom of Ann Arbor, Mark (Carol) Schwarz of Johnston, Iowa, Matt (Barbara) Schwartz of Cedar, and Rick (Kathy) Schwarz of LaQuinta, Calif.; a daughter-in-law, Barbara Schwarz of Lansing; 17 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Roy and Minnie Gibson; and two sisters, Dorthy Ennis and Gladys Brower.
No services are planned at this time.

Peter 'Pete' Patrick Harrison
Died November 30, 1998
MAPLE CITY - Peter "Pete" Patrick Harrison, 68, died Monday at his home in Maple City, surrounded by his family after a brief but courageous battle against cancer.
Pete was born in England and came to this country as an infant with his parents, Patrick and Kitty Harrison. They lived in Grand Haven, where he graduated from Grand Haven High School in 1948. He then sailed as a merchant seaman on the Great Lakes and abroad until he went into the U.S. Army during the Korean conflict and he served in Germany.
On August 30, 1951, he married Shirley "Sal" VerHoeks at Fort Sill, Okla.
After leaving the army he graduated from Western Michigan University. He was employed by Certified Public Accounting Firms in Chicago, Ill. and Grand Rapids until taking a position as treasurer of the L. Perrigo Co. in Allegan.
In 1979, Peter and his family moved to Traverse City where they owned and operated the Best Western Four Seasons Motel. He was active in the early beginnings of the Convention Bureau and the VASA.
He had avid interests in sailing, flying his plane, and his recently planted chestnut orchard at the "Cave" in Maple City.
Pete is survived by his wife Sal; their six children, Petra (Christopher) Harrison, Jerry (Shane Boland Harrison), Sean of Fremont, Calif., Peter (Evelyn) Harrison, Pat (Debi) Harrison, and Megan (Bill) Harrison Barnes; three beloved grandchildren, Caitlin, Seamus and Kylie - children of Jerry and Shane Harrison; a brother John (Sue) of Grand Haven; and a sister-in-law, Harriet Vanschaik of Marco Island, Fla.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and brothers, Jerome and Patrick.
Pete has been cremated at his request. A memorial service for family and friends will be held at a later date.
His friends Bandy Schmerheim and Jack Tokie, fellow pilots will fly his ashes over his beloved Leelanau County.
As Pete was always thinking of others, Please make memorial contributions to the Father Fred Foundation in his name.
He will be greatly missed by family, friends and employees.

Eva (Foote) Heming
Died November 30, 1998
Eva W. Heming of Traverse City passed on Monday at the Michigan Masonic Nursing Home in Alma; she was 101 years young.
Born May 20, 1897, in Solon Township, Leelanau County, she spent her younger years in the Lansing and Detroit area. Eva finally settled in Port Huron where she raised two sons and established two businesses, the Dawn Beauty Salon and the American Home Dining Room, her "House by the Side of the Road," as it was affectionately known.
Always a giving person, her most rewarding efforts were recognized through her donations of care packages to American soldiers serving in Korea during that U.N. conflict from 1950-1953. She usually sent two or three packages randomly to various units in the war zone per week during these years. Baked goods seemed to be the favorite of the troops to whom she mailed her donations. For many years afterward, her "boys" would write to her or try to search her out just to say "thanks."
Eva was a gourmet cook and baker and in 1960 was a finalist in a Pillsbury Bake-Off that was held in Washington, D.C.
She spent many years writing articles for the Record-Eagle and the Leelanau Enterprise Tribune. Among her insertions were "Food for Body and Soul," which usually included a gourmet recipe, and "Day by Day," frequently accompanied with a religious thought. She was always there to help folks and her phone was always ringing.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband, Chester "Dad" Heming, and will be interred with him in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Survivors include her younger sister (98), Georgia Renaud; her two sons, Wallace (Connie) Heming of Port Huron and Don (Jean) Heming of Traverse City; seven grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
There will be no viewing or religious service at this time. The family plans to hold a memorial service, with lunch provided, in the springtime.
The family asks that memorials not be sent at this time as there will be several opportunities to participate at the memorial service.

TRAVERSE CITY - Ashly Dawn Kluth was born prematurely and died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
She was the daughter of Doug E. Weidner and Mollie C. Kluth-Plamondon of Interlochen.
Survivors include her parents; her maternal grandparents, Debra and Ronald Bates of Traverse City; and her paternal grandparents, Mary and Tom Weidner of Kingsley.

SUTTONS BAY - Ruby J. LaCross, 60, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor.
Born Sept. 11, 1938, in Suttons Bay, she was the daughter of Louis Leabo and Josephine Olson, and the stepdaughter of Peter Herman. On June 6, 1959, at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay, she married Edward "Clyde" LaCross.
Ruby, a homemaker, was a lifetime resident of the Suttons Bay area. She was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Community Mental Health board, Red Cross Blood Drive, and the St. Michael's Ladies Auxiliary.
Survivors include two daughters, Kimberly J. (Dale) Forton of Kansas, Mo., and Michelle R. LaCross of Towerhill Adult Foster Care in Traverse City; a son, Timothy E. (Laurie) of Suttons Bay; two sisters, Betty (Loren) Groesser of Elsworth and Lynn L. Leabo of Traverse City; a brother Danny (Dorothy) Herman of Traverse City; and five grandchildren, Katlyn M. LaCross, Melissa A. Herman, Robert A. Herman, Eliot J. Forton, and Avery E. Forton.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Louis in 1973 and Josephine in 1998; a stepfather, Pete Herman in 1989; her husband, Edward in 1994; a son, Todd LaCross; and a sister, Maxine J. Steuer.

FLINT - Emma I. Belanger, 92, died Wednesday in Flint.
Born in 1906, she was the daughter of George and Victorine LaCross of Lake Leelanau. In 1924 she married Jerome E. Belanger.
She is survived by two daughters, Joanne Kalchik of Bellaire and Sharon Noffsinger of Flushing; two sons, Michael R. of Davison and Donald J. of Naples, Fla.; 18 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.
Emma was preceded in death by her husband, Jerome in 1963 and a son, Gene L. in 1985.
A funeral Mass will be held at noon Saturday at St. Robert's Catholic Church in Flushing. Interment will be at Lakeview Cemetery in South Haven on Monday.
Elizabeth Kirk (Way) Wagner

TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth Kirk (Way) Wagner, of Traverse City, passed away unexpectedly Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after a brief illness.
Born June 13, 1928, Liz was a lifelong Traverse City resident. She was the daughter of Dr. Lewis Richard and Ruth (Kirk) Way. She graduated as Betty Way from Traverse City Central High School in 1946. She then attended Rockford College in Rockford, Ill.
On April 26, 1962, she married Dr. William C. Wagner at Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City.
Liz was a homemaker who enjoyed spending time with her family. She was a very private person who cherished her friends in Bridge Club, Sewing Club, and Book Club. She was an active member of Grace Episcopal Church. Liz also had a fascination and love for early Traverse City history. She was adored by her children and grandchildren, and will be sadly missed. Her husband said he will be forever lost without his "best buddy."
She is survived by her husband, William; two daughters, Kathryn (LTC Steven) Gravlin of Selfridge ANGB and Kimberly (Eric) Olson of Holland; a son, William of cedar; five grandsons, Benjamin, Alexander, and Nicholas Gravlin, and Spencer and Adam Olson; and her mother-in-law, Mrs. Carl (Eva) Wagner.
She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant brother.

LAKE LEELANAU - Eleanor Marie Bardenhagen, 77, of Lake Leelanau, died Wednesday.
Born Sept. 28, 1921, in Cedar, she was the daughter of Joseph and Maude (McKay) April. On Sept. 28, 1960, in Leland, she married Leonard Bardenhagen.
Eleanor, a homemaker, operated the family farm with her husband. She was a member of Immanual Lutheran Church in Leland. Eleanor will always be remembered for her wonderful cooking skills and gardening abilities.
survivors include her husband Leonard; three stepchildren, Carson Bardenhagen and Duane Bardenhagen - both of East Leland, and Barbara Belanger of Leland; two sister-in-law's, Pat April and Blanche April; a brother-in-law, Bob Smith; a niece, Margaret (Tony) Zywicki; and many grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Elmer Hihnke; her parents; two brothers, Joseph April and George April; and sisters, Florence Richardson, Evelyn Ellsworth, Dorie Smith, and Gladys Macomber.

MESICK - Kenneth Lee Casselman, 19, of Mesick, died Thursday at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac.
Born March 9, 1979, in Traverse City, he was the son of James Allen and Patty Sue (Johnson) Casselman.
Kenneth was a 1997 graduate of Mesick Consolidated High School and was enrolled in Outfitters School in Montana. He enjoyed hunting and fishing.
Survivors include his parents, James and Patty; brother and sisters, Jeremy James Casselman, Carrie Lynn Casselman and Kallie Sue Casselman - all of Mesick; his paternal grandparents, Betty and Earl Casselman of Mesick; and his maternal grandparents, Paul and Nancy Johnson of Mesick.

TRAVERSE CITY - William H. Ask, 82, of Traverse City; died Saturday.
Born Jan. 1 1916, in Suttons Bay, he was the son of John and Lena (Jacobson) Ask.
William was a resident of Suttons Bay for 26 years. He started working as a child with the Leelanau Road Commision. He loved heavy equipment and built and repaired many roads in the area. He then worked as a Manager with the Peninsula Asphalt Company for over 31 years. He was a member of the South Airport Road Church of Christ and the Operating Engineers Local No. 324.
Survivors include his wife, Henrietta Ask of Traverse City; a son, Richard (Cyndi) Ask of Traverse City; a sister, Thelma Grant of Midland; grandchildren, Jean, Allan, Patti, Mary Jo, Pamela Lynn, and Richard; and numerous great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters.

TRAVERSE CITY - Genevieve W. Fudge, 80, a homemaker, died Saturday at Tendercare of Kalamazoo.
Born Feb. 8, 1918, in Pontiac, she was the daughter of Lloyd and Gertrude (Newell) Walters. On July 25, 1943, in Traverse City, she married Walter Fudge.
Genevieve lived in Traverse City for most of her life. She served her country in the Women's Army Corps and was a member of Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Traverse City. Genevieve had been employed as a bookkeeper for Montgomery Wards, Traverse City Osteopathic Hospital and Zimmerman Construction.
Survivors include two sons, Robert (Eloina) Fudge of South Padre Island, Texas, and Lewis (Mary) Fudge of Mattawan; two brothers, LeRoy (Anita) Walters of Chico, Calif., and Lewis Walters of Sun City West, Ariz.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
Genevieve was preceded in death by her husband, Walter.
Friends may visit from 5 to 8 p.m. today at the Hibbard-Ruggles Funeral Home in Traverse City. Graveside funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Excelsior Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County where burial will also take place.

Jerry Gilbert Koons
Died December 5, 1998
INTERLOCHEN - Jerry Gilbert Koons, 81, died Saturday at his home in Interlochen following a valiant battle with cancer.
He was born Aug. 22, 1917, in Lansing, the son of Florence (Wilcox) and Jerry G. Koons Sr.
Jerry graduated from Lansing Central High School in 1935 and from Lansing Business College in 1949. He was a decorated veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army from May 1943 to January 1946 in the European theater.
He married the former Jeannette Newton on Oct. 15, 1937 in East Lansing. To this union were born three children, Daniel, born in 1951; Cecy, born in 1952; and James, born in 1958. Jeanette died Sept. 16, 1972. Jerry was united in marriage with the former Betty Grill, who survives, on June 12, 1974.
Jerry's early employment years were with Oldsmobile in Lansing. Following his graduation from Lansing Business College, he began his hospital administration career at Pennock Hospital in Hastings. In 1955 he accepted employment at the former Big Rapids Community Hospital (now Mecosta County General Hospital). Jerry retired in 1977.
He was a member of The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City. Jerry was also a life member of the Lansing Masonic Lodge No. 33 and the Disabled American Veterans.
Besides his wife, Betty, survivors include his sons, Daniel of Maine and James of Iowa; his brother and sister-in-law, Edwin "Bill" and Marilyn Koons; two grandchildren; a nephew; and several cousins.
In addition to his parents and his first wife, Jerry was preceded in death by his daughter, Cecy, in 1983.
Cremation has taken place and, according to his wishes, no services will be held.
Memorial contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church, Cherryland Humane Society, or Munson Hospice.

Wilber Haskell 'Bill' Worden
Died December 6, 1998
THOMPSONVILLE - Wilber Haskell "Bill" Worden of Thompsonville passed away Sunday following a brief illness at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with his family at his bedside.
Born July 21, 1922, in Waco, Texas, he was the son of Vere F. and Rhea (Bloom) Worden, who both preceded him in death. Bill was married on June 28, 1942, in Chelsea to Elizabeth A. Boyce, who survives.
He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps, 3rd Strategic Air Depot, in Watton, England through the end of World War II.
His brother, Raymond F. Worden, was killed in the South Pacific on Nov. 10, 1944.
Bill and his wife had one daughter, Diane (Marc) Vale, and three sons, Raymond F., Steven F. (Deborah) and Peter A. Worden. Peter died Dec. 27, 1981. Bill is also survived by a daughter-in-law, Emily Meuleman; two grandchildren, Sarah Elizabeth and Brady Peter Worden; one sister, Betty (Dan) Cowan; and three brothers, R.V., James S., and Richard Worden.
He was president and general manager of Park, Worden, Walz, Inc. (Marathon Oil distributors) in Chelsea from 1946 to 1963. He was employed as a corrections officer at the State Prison of Southern Michigan in Jackson from 1964 until his retirement in 1980.
He was an avid fisherman, gardener, woodworker and bird-watcher, and was declared to be a master soup-maker by his friends, family and neighbors. He was always ready with a pot of soup for any crisis in the area. He also loved to travel, especially to the 3rd S.A.D. reunions.
Bill was a life member of the DisabIed American Veterans, a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 156 F & A M., and was active for many years in Girl Scouting and Boy Scouting. He was a charter member of the Chelsea Rod and Gun Club and a member of the Betsie River Sportsman's Club. He served on the Betsie River Zoning Review Board for 10 years and was road commissioner for the Old Grade Crossing subdivision for 14 years. Bill was a loving husband, father and grandfather, a caring friend and neighbor, and was loved by all.
Memorial services will be held at a later date.

LITTLETON, Colo. - Jack Eldridge Bultman Sr., 64, of Littleton, died Monday, Nov. 16, at Porter Care Hospice in Littleton.
He was born Nov. 21, 1933, in Grand Rapids, Mich., and married Ruth K. Rose on Nov. 23, 1956, in Grand Rapids.
Jack served in the U.S. Air Force and was ranked as an airman first class. He worked as a certified elevator inspector. He was a volunteer probation officer for Littleton. Jack was a member of the Mile High Flying Club, Furrin Group Sports Car Club, Colorado Automobile Racing Club, National Association of Elevator Safety Authorities, and the International Snowmobile Racing Association of Northern Michigan.
He is survived by his wife, Ruth of Littleton; two sons, Jack E. (Robin) Bultman II of Naperville, Ill. and Mark A. TRAVERSE CITY - Philogene J. "Gene" Wressell, 81, of Traverse City, died Monday at Health Park Medical Center in Fort Myers, Fla.
Born May 5, 1917, in Saginaw, he was the son of Alfred N. and Evelyn (Rousseau) Wressell. On Nov. 25, 1939, he married Ortelle F. Martin
He was a retired motel owner and real estate agent in Traverse City and Suttons Bay. Gene worked for 11 years at General Motors in Saginaw and for 20 years with Sears Roebuck and Co. He moved his family to Traverse City in 1966. He was a former member of the Traverse City Rotary for about 16 years and the Traverse City Elks for about 19 years. He was a former president of the Traverse City Motel Association and a member of the ski council. He enjoyed spending time with his family, hunting, sailing, golfing and hobbies.
Survivors include his wife, Ortelle of Traverse City; three daughters, Judith (Jerry) Erickson of Marquette, Linda (Leon) Lichty of Traverse City, and Theresa "Teri" (Michael) Mulcahy of Traverse City; three sons,John W. "Bill" Wressell of Traverse City, Gene "Nick" (Nancy) Wressell and Thomas (Sandy Bannon) Wressell; three sisters, Janet Harden of Saginaw, June (Harold) Keene of Saginaw, and Mary; two brothers, Jim (Valerie) Wressell and Leo (Verna) Wressell - both of Saginaw; 11 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Alfred and Evelyn.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. Friends may call form 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

NEWBERG, Ore. - Dorothy J. Bright, 78, died Tuesday at her home in Newberg.
She was born the daughter of Ira L. and Ruth E. (Dull) Rose on March 3, 1920, in Cottage Grove. After her mother died on Christmas Day, she and her younger brother, Bill, traveled with their father to their paternal grandfather's home in Kentucky. It was during the Depression and when her father did not find work, they returned to Oregon. Dorothy and her brother stayed with relatives for a time then she lived with George and Helen Yost who raised her.
Dorothy was married to Willis Carlson in Vancouver, Wash. Their daughter, Terry, was born before he contracted tuberculosis and preceded her in death. In 1945 she was married to Robert Bright. They made their home in Traverse City, Mich., where three children, Michael, David and Marsha were born. In 1978 they moved to Newberg and he preceded her in death on Dec. 1, 1996.
Dorothy was a member of the Nazarene Church and, as a young woman, was an exhibition roller skater. During World War II, she was a welder at the shipyards, working on several ships including Battleship Oregon. She took nurses training at St. Vincent's Hospital in Portland. Throughout her lifetime, Dorothy was totally devoted to her family.
Surviving and left to honor her life are two daughters, Terry Milliren of Wilsonville and Marsha Radtke of Newberg; two sons, the Rev. Michael Bright of Traverse City, Mich., and David Bright of Newberg; her siblings, Bill Rose of Jefferson, Bill Crist of Salem, Marge McClintock of Eugene, Joe Yost of Sixes and Lila Sarratt of Port Orford; eight grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and those who have come to know and appreciate her where she has lived and been a part of the community.
Her funeral service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Attrell's Newberg Funeral Chapel, a Golden Rule funeral home, with her son, the Rev. Michael Bright, officiating. Concluding service with crypt entombment follows at Valley View Memorial Park in Newberg.
Beverly A. Coffey

INTERLOCHEN - Beverly A. Coffey, 69, died Thursday at her home in Interlochen.
Born June 24, 1929, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Warner and Ivy Mae (Emerick) Dane. On May 6, 1950, in Detroit, she married Robert Coffey.
Beverly moved to Interlochen from Detroit in 1986. She enjoyed flower gardening and crocheting.
Survivors include her husband, Robert of Interlochen; a son, Robert P. (Tamara) Coffey of Lowell; a sister, Mildred Lopo of Reston, Va.; and three grandchildren, Alyssa, Andrea, and Robert Coffey - all of Lowell.
She was preceded in death by her parents, a brother, Paul Dane, and a sister, Leota Reichard.
Friends may call from 3 to 5 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City No formal services are planned at this time.

TRAVERSE CITY - Leonard D. DeBres, 75, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center.
Born June 19, 1923, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Leonard and Agnes (Tryon) DeBres. On June 19, 1972, in Newberry, he married Opal M. King.
Leonard, a veteran, was a previous resident of Grand Rapids where he grew up and lived until he left the service. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was part of the Amphibious Engineers Boat and Shore Regiment. A vital part of operations in the Southwest Pacific area, he was decorated with many medals.
Survivors include his son, Leonard (Nancy) D. DeBres of Cape Coral, Fla.; his brother, Robert DeBres of Forsyth, Miss.; and three grandchildren, David, Debb, and Tanya.
Leonard was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Opal, who died on Jan. 31, 1995, and a brother.
Cremation has taken place. No services are scheduled at this time. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

ALMA - Vera Elsie Hoffmeister, 84, died Monday at the Michigan Masonic Home in Alma.
She was born in Cincinnati, Ohio. She and her husband, Harold were longtime residents of Cincinnati before they retired to Traverse City. Vera, a homemaker, loving mother and grandmother, was a resident of the Michigan Masonic Home for the past seven years.
Survivors include two sons, James of Cincinnati, Ohio, and George of Traverse City; a sister, Loraine Heimerdinger of Alma; six grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold on Nov. 6, 1998.

Born April 23, 1899, in Solon Township, she was the daughter of Edward and Anna (Hockeborn) Carpenter.
Louise was a member of Bayview Wesleyan Church in Traverse City. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and visiting with others. She also enjoyed storytelling, especially the "Skunk" story.
Survivors include two daughters, Ruth Erickson and Rena (Robert) Wurm - both of Traverse City; nine grandchildren, Steven (Brenda) Wurm, Gregory (Kate) O'Hara, Randall (Anna) Wurm, Larry (Colleen) Erickson, Rebecca Erickson, Susan Recker, Nancy (Clay) Yahr, Janet Lautner and Kevin Lautner; and 15 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her first husband, Angus Launtner; her second husband, Albert Shaw; two sons, Marvin G. and Emery Angus Launtner; four brothers, Arthur, Walter, Ernest and Robert Carpenter; and an infant sister.

Noel Lawrence 'Larry' Francoeur

ADRIAN - Noel Lawrence Francoeur, 61, died at his home in Adrian on Thursday, with his family at his side. He faced his battle with brain cancer courageously, viewing his illness not as an obstacle, but as a stepping stone to life.
Larry was born October 7, 1937, the second of five children, to Noel L. and Ruth M. (McKie) Francoeur in Adrian. He attended the Riverside School No. 15 and graduated from Adrian Catholic Central High School in 1954. He earned a Bachelor of Commerce degree from Assumption University in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, in 1959.
On August 27, 1960, Larry married Judith C. Kirkwood at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Adrian; who survives. Their marriage was blessed with four daughters and their families, all of whom survive - Mary Susan Duerksen, husband Robert, and Kelsey Roberta, Kathleen Susan and Matthew Joseph of Ann Arbor; Anne Margaret Wilson, husband Leo, and Evan Leo and Connor Noel of Annapolis, Md.; Patricia Kay Judd, husband Paul, and Karen Eileen, Emily Margaret and Eric William of Alto; Joan Elizabeth Rymsza, husband Guy, and Mark Lawrence and Peter Joseph of South Bend, Ind.
Larry is also survived by his mother, Ruth M. Francoeur of Adrian; sisters, Sr. Marilyn P. Francoeur, O.P., of Westchester, Ill., and Herline E. (Ray) Harm of Columbia, Calif.; brothers, Douglas W. (Mary) and John Q. (Jan) - both of Adrian; and his nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1983.
Larry began a long and faithful career at Citizens Gas and Fuel Company in 1959. At his retirement in 1997, he was vice president of operations. During his many years in the Adrian community, Larry was a member of the Adrian Kiwanis Club, serving as president in 1981. He was named Kiwanian of the Year in 1985. He served on the Adrian Downtown Development Authority for six years, as chairman from 1993 to 1995. During his six years on the board of the Lenawee County Chamber of Commerce, he served as treasurer and chairman. Larry was involved with Lenawee Communities in Schools, Lenawee United Way and Lenawee County Personnel Directors Association, serving as president in 1976. A lifelong member of St. Mary's Catholic Church, Larry was an active participant in numerous committees and programs. The Chamber of Commerce recently honored Larry with the 1998 Maple Leaf Award which reads - "For the significant contributions you have made to the professional and private lives of so many; and to express our appreciation for your integrity, dependability, and balanced leadership."
A talented, competitive athlete, Larry captained the Assumption University basketball team during his senior year, leading it to win the Ontario University Athletic Association Championship. In the 1960's he played baseball for Merillat Woodworking of Adrian in the Toledo Federation Baseball Association. He was recognized by the Michigan High School Athletic Association after twenty years as a basketball official. Larry was a skilled golfer and was a member of the lenawee Country Club for many years.
Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today and 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Anderson Funeral Home in Adrian. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church; the Rev. Frs. Thomas Helfrich and Louis Komorowski and Deacon Richard Bayes presiding. Interment will take place a St. Joseph's Catholic Cemetery. A Vigil Prayer Service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Sunday by Deacon Richard Bayes.

MANISTEE - Tom Dale Schwartz, 44, of Manistee, formerly of Traverse City, died Thursday at the University of Michigan Hospital in Ann Arbor following a lengthy illness.
Born May 27, 1954, in Fremont, he was the son of Dale and Donna (Lough) Schwartz. He married Melody Miriam James on Nov. 24, 1973, in Fremount. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary. The Schwartz family moved to Manistee from Traverse City in 1996.
Tom was a man of many trades - construction work, oil field sub-surface surveying and rebuilder of cars. Tom was born again in October 1995. He attended Calvary Baptist Church in Manistee.
He is survived by his wife, Melody; his loving children, Rachel and Todd Jamison of Traverse City, and Jeremie and Charity Schwartz of Arcadia; three grandchildren; his parents, Dale and Donna Schwartz of Traverse City; his beloved siblings, sister, Cindy (Steve) Brant of Shepard; brothers, Tim (Gail) Schwartz and Tad Schwartz - all of Traverse City; maternal grandmother, Lucinda Lough of Hersey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins,

ALDEN - Charles S. Lautenbach, 84, of Alden, died Friday and Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 1, 1914, in Talmadge Township in Ottawa County, he was the son of Stephen and Jessie (White) Lautenbach. On Sept. 20, 1941, in Crockery Township in Ottawa County, he married Kathleen M. Cook.
Charles worked as a design engineer for 40 years. He had been employed by General Motors Styling and retired in April of 1974. He was a member of the Bellaire Masonic Lodge No. 398 F. and A.M., Order of the Eastern Star in Bellaire, the Shrine Temple in Traverse City, and the Alden United Methodist Church. He enjoyed golfing, farming and traveling.
Survivors include his wife, Kathleen of Alden; three children, Charleen K. (John) Jackson of Livonia, Wendy S. (Pablo) LaValle of Ann Arbor, and Lawrance (Debra) Lautenbach of Belleville; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and a brother, John A. (Ione) Lautenbach of Homeland, Calif.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Ione Taggert.

TRAVERSE CITY - George Albert Allard, 77, died Friday at his home in Traverse City.
Born Jan. 25, 1921, in Manchester N.H., he was the son of Louis R. and Blanche (Caquotte) Allard. On Jan. 6, 1945, at St. Mary's church in Wilmington, N.C., he married Patricia Ann Lewis.
George was a motel owner and a self-employed insurance agent. A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps from 1942 to 1946 in the Aleutian Islands and South Pacific at I.E. Shima and Okinawa. He was a member of St. Patrick Catholic Church in Traverse City, the Disabled American Veterans, the Knights of Columbus, the Traverse City Motel Association, and the Traverse City and Interlochen chambers of commerce.
Survivors include his wife, Patricia; four children, Robert L. (Linda) Allard of Traverse City, Anita M. (Ronald) Underwood of Traverse City, Cheri A. Rhoads of Midland, Texas, and Richard M. (Rhonda) Allard of Odessa, Texas; 11 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Louis and Blanche; a grandson, Craig Allard; and a sister, Marie Theresa Nowicki.

CHELSEA - Betty Lou Kenney, 74, of Chelsea, formerly of De Tour Village, died Sunday afternoon at Chelsea Community Hospital.
She was born July 4, 1924, in Newberry, the daughter of Andrew and Louise (Gareau) Brenzie. She and her husband were married on March 23, 1944; he preceded her in death on May 21,1993.
Betty had been a resident of Chelsea for the past year and was a resident of Muskegon from 1946 until 1976 when she and her husband moved permanently to their summer residence in De Tour Village. Mr. Kenney was a long-time police officer in Muskegon and retired as chief of police in 1976.
She was a wonderful grandmother, making pies, knitting and being there for her children and grandchildren.
Survivors include her son, Michael L. (Kathleen) Kenney of Chelsea; her daughter, Gail A. (Joel) Mars of Traverse City; five grandchildren, Patrick, Erin and Kelly Kenney, and Andrew and Stacy Mars; and two stepsisters, Rosy Duff of Fruitport and Sue Farnquist of Grand Haven.
Betty was preceded in death by a sister, Ann Brenzie.
The family will receive friends from noon to 1 p.m. Friday at St. Mary Catholic Church where a memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m.; the Rev. Father Matthew Weber will officiate. Following the services, family and friends are invited to a luncheon in the parish center.

Robert J. 'Bob' Payette Jr.
Died December 12, 1998
FRANKFORT - Robert J. "Bob" Payette Jr., 68, of Frankfort, formerly of Grand Rapids, passed away Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Bob was affiliated with the Martin stores and was an officer in Payette Distributing of Grand Rapids. He subsequently spent several years as a missionary in Pineville and Harlan, Ky., and Newcastle, lnd., for Presbyterian and Catholic missions.
While living in Grand Rapids, he was president of the Grand Rapids South Rotary Club, board member of the Grand Rapids Symphony Orchestra, and former chairman of the Grand Rapids Youth Symphony Orchestra. Bob was able to enlist four Rotary Clubs in the Grand Rapids area for the support of the youth symphony. His love of classical music, opera and literature allowed him to be an ardent supporter of Interlochen Arts Academy and the Grand Rapids symphony.
Bob retired to the Frankfort area in 1988 and cared for his mother, Mary Kay Payette, until her death in 1996. He was an active member of St. Ann Parish in Frankfort where he served as lector and on the pastoral council. He was also an active member of Alcoholics Anonymous and volunteered in the AA jail ministry. Bob volunteered his spare time to the Social Justice Mission, the Institute for Ministry, Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital, Benzie Area Historical Museum and Interlochen fund-raisers. He also served as a tutor for adult non-readers.
He is survived by his siblings, Thomas (Virginia) of Boston, Mass., Mary Lou (Jack) Campbell of Henderson, Nev., Nancy (David) DeVries of Frankfort, and Peter (Karen) of Flint; and numerous nieces and nephews.
A time of sharing with the family will be held from 4:30 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
A memorial Mass will be celebrated at noon Friday from St. Ann Catholic Church, with Msgr. David Gemuend as celebrant. Interment will follow at Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North.

ELK RAPIDS - Clare John Camfield, 74, died peacefully Saturday at his home in Elk Rapids after a short illness.
Born Aug. 12, 1924, in Baldwin, he was the son of Robert and Eunice (Cassidy) Camfield. On March 14, 1943, in Muskegon, he married Rose Giammaiva.
Clare and his wife lived in Baldwin and Traverse City before moving to Elk Rapids in 1962 when they purchased the Riteway Party Store. After selling that business in 1969, they spent their summers in Alaska until 1986. He was a member of Rotary International while in business in Elk Rapids. Clare loved hunting and was an avid fisherman. He especially loved fishing in Alaska.
Survivors include his daughter, Susan K. Racicot of Anchorage, Alaska; daughter and son-in-law, Eleanor and Tim Smith of Florida; sister and brother-in-law, Virginia and Jack Hemming of Traverse City; brothers and sisters-in-law, Robert and Virginia Camfield of Baldwin; Herbert and Jean Camfield of Tecumseh; John and Sylvia Fitch of Florida; Robert and Ruth Fitch of Texas; brother, James Camfield of Traverse City; mother, Florence Fitch Camfield of Baldwin; granddaughters, Jill D. Racicot and Janis Riggs - both of Anchorage, Alaska, and Jean Stebe of Charlevoix; a grandson, Jay Wallace of Branch; great-granddaughters, Jessica Wallace of Baldwin, Jaime Stebe of Charlevoix; great-grandsons, R.J. Stebe of Charlevoix, Jason Wallace of Branch and Kenneth Wallace of Baldwin; and many nieces and nephews, and their children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 55 years, Rose; parents, Robert and Eunice; a great-grandson, Jesse Wallace; and a sister-in-law, Jane Camfield.
A memorial service and burial are planned for a later date. Burial will be in Weber Township Cemetery in Baldwin.

Norm Averill

OLD MISSION - Norm Averill, 60, died Tuesday at his home in Old Mission.
Born Nov. 2, 1938, in East Grand Rapids, he was the son of Forrest and Josephine (Perry) Averill.
Norm served in the U.S. Marine Corps. He received a master's degree in fine arts from Michigan State University in 1965. He studied with Louie Raynor while at MSU. He was an instructor of fine arts from 1966 to 1996 at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City where he developed the ceramic program.
Survivors include a sister, Marilyn (Charles) Towar of Flint; five nephews; and two nieces.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Charles.
Friends will gather to share the memories of Norm in the spring.

Lyman Hathaway Clark

TRAVERSE CITY - Lyman Hathaway Clark, 53, of Traverse City, died Tuesday December 15, 1998 In Traverse Clty.
He was born December 29, 1944, in Berwyn, Ill., the son of Charles and Agnee (Lossman) Clark and had lived in Traverse City most all of his life.
A 1962 graduate of St. Francis High School. Lyman had been president of his class, was a National Merit Scholar and had participated in several sports while at St. Francis. He eamed a BA from Harvard University, graduating in 1968 and received his MBA from Stanford in 1971. After graduating from Stanford, he joined the Environmental Protection Agency where he served as Chief, Cost and Economic Impact Analysis Branch, for which he received the Distinguished Service Award in 1981. His private clients included the World Bank and The United Natlons. Lyman had been a teacher of the Transcendental Meditation technique and was a candidate representing the Michigan Natural Law Party. He was an experienced entrepreneur and real estate developer. He also was a finance and economics consultant specializing in feasibility studies, financial modelling and strategic planning and was an expert consultant and published author in the area of environmental policy and economics.
Lyman is survived by his twin brother, Henry Ogden Clark (and wife Fran) of Fairlield, lowa; a niece; and cousins,The Larry Booth Family of Chicago.
Lyman was preceded in death by his parents and stepfather.
A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Fr. Jim Gardiner as Celebrent.

Frank J. Harrand

KINGSLEY - Frank J. Harrand, 90, of Kingsley, died Tuesday afternoon at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after a brief illness.
Born July 15, 1908, in Oshkosh, Wis., he was the son of Jacob and Mary (Sonnleitner) Harrand. On Aug. 10, 1933, at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hannah, he married Julia Boehnlein. They celebrated their 65th wedding anniversary with their family this summer.
Frank, a farmer, was a well-known potato grower. He had been active in Mayfield Township affairs. He was a board member of Mayfield Township for 25 years. He was a member of the Farm Bureau and served as a justice of the peace in Mayfield Township. He was a church sexton for 50 years and was a past head usher of St. Mary's Catholic church for 15 years.
Frank is survived by his wife, Julia of Hannah; six sons, Robert (Rosie) and Richard - both of Owosso, Jim (Rose) and Patrick (Kathy) - both of Grawn, Dan (Rachel) of Lake Ann, and Tom (Barb) of Kingsley; two daughters, Nancy Harrand of Traverse City and Sue (Jim) Zenner of Grawn; 23 grandchildren, 38 great-grandchildren; a great-great-granddaughter; a brother, Joe (Audrey) of Ludington; four sisters, Rose Wurm of Kingsley, Pauline (Rueben) LaBonte, Catherine (Ed) Lueck of Traverse City, and Clara Wise of Ohio; a special neice, Thomasine (Bob) Bembeneck of Traverse City; foster sons, Ron Stauffer of Traverse City, Steve Stauffer of Nebraska and Ray Feagles of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
Frank was preceded in death by his brothers, John, Adolph, Alfred, and his sisters, Mary Bain and Sister Ann Catherine O.P.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley; scripture readings will be held at 7:30.

Irene Maria Malanech

TRAVERSE CITY - Irene Maria Malanech, 74, of Traverse City, died Monday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
She was born on Aug. 24, 1924, in Kamenec-Podolskij, Ukraine. Irene met her husband, Peter, who was stationed in Germany while serving in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. They married in 1945.
Irene lived in Detroit all of her married life where she worked as a dental assistant. She loved her grandchildren, pets, sewing and gardening. She especially loved cooking Ukrainian specialties. She moved to Traverse City in 1984 to be closer to her daughters and grandchildren. She will be lovingly remembered for her wonderful sense of humor and compassionate heart. She was a woman of strength and courage who will be deeply missed by all who knew her.
Survivors include two daughters, Kristine Morris and partner Linda Wilson and their children Ruth and Daniel, and Sandra Ruth McSweeney and husband Allen and their children Michael and Matthew.
Irene was preceded in death by her husband, Peter, her parents and two brothers.
A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship in Traverse City; the Rev. Emmy Lou Belcher and the Rev. Linda L. Wilson will officiate.

TRAVERSE CITY - Edward C. Schuler, 91, of Traverse City, died Tuesday.
Born Feb. 5, 1907, in Elk Rapids, he was the son of Adam and Emma (Bow) Schuler.
Edward worked as a machinist with the Sheffer Collet Company, retiring in 1969. He moved from Elk Rapids to Traverse City in 1950. Edward was also an avid fisherman.
Survivors include two daughters, Patricia Graf of Kalamazoo and Gene (Kenneth) Lynn of Portage; five grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and a great-great-grandchild.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Helen F. Schuler on Dec. 31, 1988; his parents; his brothers; a sister; and a granddaughter, Pamela Callahan.

TRAVERSE CITY - Lee Seymour Cobb, 85, of Traverse City, formerly of Flint, died Friday morning at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
Born June 26, 1913, in Saginaw, he was the son of William and Sarah Cobb. He and his wife, Charlotte, were married on June 9, l939; she preceded him in death on July 12, 1989.
Lee worked as a welder for Fisher and Wright Inc. in Flint and was a member in good standing of Plumbers and Pipefitters Local No. 370 for 50 years. Lee was active in The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City and as a volunteer for Munson Medical Center and RSVP
Survivors include a son, Dale (Nancy) Cobb of Traverse City; a sister, Helen Blackmer of Arizona; four grandchildren Lee (Daphne) Cobb of Kingsley, Nathan Owens of Portland, Curtis Cobb of Capitola, Calif., Carrie Cobb of Traverse City; and two great-grandchildren Nicholas and Tyler Cobb.

TRAVERSE CITY - Rosa M. Faist, 100, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Tendercare of Traverse City.
Born Nov. 10, 1898, on the family farm in Cedar Township in Osceola County, she was the daughter of Daniel and Matilda (Faist) Faist.
Rosa, a housekeeper, moved in 1951 to Traverse City from Reed City. She was a member of the Emmanuel United Methodist Church in Traverse City. She enjoyed crocheting, embroidery and tatting.
Survivors include a sister, Cora Faist of Reed City; two cousins, Ruth L. Brakel and Pearl Faist - both of Traverse City; and many other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Emma.

Lynn Avery Ryckman

SAULT STE. MARIE - Lynn Avery Ryckman of Sault Ste. Marie and Traverse City, died Wednesday at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
Lynn was born Jan. 30, 1936, in Flint.
He attended Longfellow and Flint Central schools. He served in the U.S. Army for two years. He attended Kirtland Community College in Roscommon where he received his associate degree. He received his bachelor of arts, master's of arts and doctorate degrees at Michigan State University. Lynn was the owner of Higgins Lake Pro-Hardware in Roscommon. He taught for several years at Emporia State University in Kansas and at Lake Superior State University in Sault Ste. Marie. He was very active with his family and life at Lake Superior State University.
Survivors include his wife, Annette J. Ryckman; a son, Roger Roy Ryckman of Traverse City; a daughter, Susan A. Ryckman of Des Moines, Iowa; a brother, Erwin G. (Peggy) Ryckman of Owosso; a brother-in-law, Edwin E. (Marjorie) Wallrath of Birch Run; a granddaughter, Kathryn S. Ryckman of Des Moines, Iowa; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
Lynn was preceded in death by his parents, C. Roy and Margaret Ryckman, and an infant daughter, Jennifer L. Ryckman.

Bryson Donald 'Bryce' Sprandel

MAPLE CITY - Bryson Donald "Bryce" Sprandel, 18, of Maple City, died Wednesday near Maple City, as result of a car accident.
Born Feb. 22, 1980, in Traverse City, he was the son of John and Devon (Inman) Sprandel.
Bryce worked for PDM Lumber Co. in Traverse City. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland. He was also a member of the Cedar Rod and Gun Club and the Buckley Old Engine Club. Bryce truly loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an all-around sports enthusiast. Bryce enjoyed skiing and especially enjoyed hockey.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Heather; grandparents, George and Elmy Wepking of Traverse City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walt and Heneritta Sprandel; and his maternal grandfather, Donald Inman.

Laurence E. Therrian

EAST LANSING - Laurence E. Therrian, 96, passed away Tuesday.
He was born on July 15, l902, in Saginaw.
Laurence lived in the Lansing area since 1925 and moved to Traverse City in 1954. He retired from the Lansing Fire Department as a deputy chief in 1954, and, while in Traverse City, was employed at the Brown Lumber Co. for 26 years.
Surviving are three sons, Thomas (Judy) Therrian of Lansing, Laurence Therrian of Higgins Lake, and Donald (Wilma) Therrian of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; a daughter, Nancy (Jack) Burris of Lansing; a daughter-in-law, Sylvia Therrian; 21 grandchildren; 49 great grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren, great-great-great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Honey in 1992; and sons, Robert and William.
Religious services will be conducted at 10 a.m. today at the Estes-Leadley Greater Lansing Chapel by The Rev Msgr. Steven Raica of St. Mary Cathedral. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

Jeanette D. Wilson

GREILICKVILLE - Jeanette D. Wilson, 92, died Wednesday at her home in Greilickville.
Born June 13, 1906, in Kewanee, Ill., she was the daughter of Ernest and Maria (Ekstrol) Anderson. On Jan. 17, 1923, in Onekama, she married Kenneth Wilson.
Jeanette, a homemaker, was a former resident of Chief, Mich., in Manistee County from 1919 to 1963 and Washington, D.C. from 1963 to 1979. She previously worked at Glen of Michigan in Manistee for several years in the finish sewing department.
Survivors include a daughter, June Barth of Greilickville; a son, Gordon (Frieda) Wilson of Beecher, Ill.; a sister Maxine Anderson of Greilickville; 21 grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Kenneth in 1963; three sons, Russell in 1988, Dale in 1998, and Glen in 1978; and two grandsons, Daniel Barth and Derek Wilson.
The family will greet friends from 12:30 p.m. until the time of the memorial service which will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; the Rev. Jane Wilson will officiate. Burial will be in Bear Lake Township Cemetery.

Born April 1, 1908, on Old Mission Peninsula, she was the daughter of Dudley and Flossie (Burgess) Griffin.
Leah was a native of Old Mission Peninsula. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City and enjoyed needlework.
Survivors include a sister, Jayne (Melvin) Bock of Jackson; a brother, John (Mickey) Griffin of Traverse City; three nieces, MaryLee (Carl) Egeler of Winter Haven, Fla., Sharon Cox of Traverse City, and Jamel (Larry) Anderson of Traverse City; a nephew, Kevin Bock of Bryan, Ohio; a great-niece, Fay Thomas, whom she shared her home with; and several other great-nieces and great-nephews.
She was preceded in death by her brothers, Dudley Griffin Jr. and Ben Griffin; and two sisters, Betty Griffin and Dorothy Seegmiller.

TRAVERSE CITY - Arthur J. Mac, 85, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born April 18, 1913, in Detroit, he was the son of John and Antoinette (Zepke) Mac. On June 18, 1940, in Detroit, he married Alice J. Majerowicz.
Arthur moved to Traverse City in 1995, he previously lived in Grosse Point Park. He was a member of the Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City and a third degree life member of the Knights of Columbus. He was a volunteer at the Community Meals at Trinity Lutheran Church. A Mechanical Engineer he was the former owner of Dodge Industry in Detroit. He enjoyed reading especially biographies, historical and political books. His family came first, his wife, children and grandchildren were his treasures. He loved to drive his wife to her many volunteer activities. He could always turn the other cheek and he never worried about his reward. He was a kind and honest man.
Survivors include his wife, Alice J. of Traverse City; two daughters, Sharon (Dr. Edward) Rutkowski of Traverse City, and Dr. Mary Ann (Cyril) Grobbel of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Edward (Leslie) Rutkowski of Colorado, David (Karen) Rutkowski of Virginia, and Jonathan and Brian Grobbel of Grand Rapids; and a great-grandson, Simon Rutkowski of Colorado.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a grandson, Thomas Rutkowski.

MAPLE CITY - Bryson Donald Sprandel, 18, of Maple City, died Wednesday near Maple City, as the result of a car accident.
Born Feb. 22, 1980, in Traverse City, he was the son of John and Devon (Inman) Sprandel.
Bryson worked for PDM Lumber Co. in Traverse City. He was an active member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland. He was also a member of the Cedar Rod and Gun Club and the Buckley Old Engine Club. Bryson truly loved the outdoors, hunting and fishing. He was an all-around sports enthusiast. He enjoyed skiing and especially enjoyed hockey. Bryson was a June graduate of Leland High School and also attended the Career Tech Center.
Survivors include his parents; a sister, Heather; grandparents, George and Elmy Wepking of Traverse City; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Walt and Heneritta Sprandel; and his maternal grandfather, Donald Inman.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at the Immanuel Lutheran Church; the Rev. Lawerence K. Matro will officiate. Burial will be in St. Paul's Lutheran Cemetery in Good Harbor.

TRAVERSE CITY - Richard C. Beall, 69, of Traverse City, died Friday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Born July 8, 1929, in Niles, he was the son of Merwin F. and Ola (Mitchell) Beall. On June 30, 1951, in Detroit, he married Gilda Franklin.
Richard grew up in Huntsville, Ala. and moved to Southfield in 1951. After retirement he moved to Traverse City. He worked as a pharmacist at Lafayette Clinic in Detroit for 15 years before retiring in 1989. He was a member of the Elks Lodge in Traverse City and active with the Auburn Alumni Association. Richard was an avid fisherman and served in the U.S. Marine Corps.
Survivors include his wife, Gilda; a daughter, Lindy (Roger) Auble of McMillan; a son, Richard C. and his fiancee Andrea Lampley of Hamtramick; and an aunt, Mary Syler of Shelby Township.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
No services are planned, arrangements are by the Hibbard Ruggles Funeral Home in Traverse City.

George Charles Happy

TRAVERSE CITY - George Charles Happy, 83, died Friday morning at his home in Traverse City.
Born Sept. 8, 1915, in Traverse City, he was the son of Emery H. and Charlotte A. (Enquist) Happy. On April 5, 1941, in Traverse City, he married Ada Rosalie Chance.
George served as a photographer's mate first class in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was the former owner and operator of the Happy Note, a gift shop in Interlochen. He was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the Railroad Historical Society of Northwestern Michigan. A graduate of Traverse City High School, he faithfully followed the Trojans to their football and basketball games. George loved to travel, enter contests and put artwork on envelopes, rockhounding, fishing and metal detecting.
Survivors include his wife, Ada Rosalie of Traverse City; a son, Charles Gene (Pilar) Happy of Garden Grove, Calif.; two daughters, Rosanne J. McKinley of Traverse City and Robette L. (Arthur) Leffring of Interlochen; a brother, Willard Happy of Alma; eight grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandson, Brian Charles Happy; a sister Clara Dalzell; and two brothers, Herman T. Happy and Roy P. Happy.
Cremation has taken place and memorial services will be held this spring.

Dean William Walker

TRAVERSE CITY - Dean William Walker beloved husband, dedicated father and devoted son, died Thursday. He enjoyed life for 40 years
He was born on October 28, 1958, in Royal Oak, Mich. Dean was the loving son of Arthur and Judith (Chittick) Walker of Bayview and Winter Haven, Fla. On August 13, 1983, he married his best friend, Jill Katherine Scott. He became a proud father on October 11, 1986, with Jacob W.; and on August 6, 1988 with Troy R.
Dean was an active outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, boating and skiing with his family and friends. His favorite pastime was attending his sons various sporting events. Dean worked for the Bouma Corporation for 20 years, and was Branch President for the Traverse City office.
In 1977. Dean graduated from Petoskey High School. He attended Michigan Technological University where he was a member of their ski team. He also raced on the CUSA ski circuit. Dean was a member of the Traverse City Builders and Traders Association, a past President of the Grand Traverse Archers Association and a former Trustee at Grawn United Methodist Church. He along with his family are very involved with the Grand Traverse Hockey Association, and as a family attended Central United Methodist Church.
Continuing on loving him are his wife, Jill; his two fine sons, Jacob and Troy; his parents, Arthur and Judith Walker; his brothers, Douglas F. (Lauren) Walker of Okemos and David T. of Haslett, his uncle, Richard G. (Sharon) Walker of Petoskey; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.

Rose was preceded in death by her husband, George; her son, Peter George Folkersma; a brother, Charles Polonowski; and two sisters, Stella Bialik and Rita Sief. She was also a member of the Basilica of St. Adalbert and was an active participant at St. Patrick Church on Silver Lake Road in Traverse City.

John Edward Troppi Sr.

KALEVA - John Edward Troppi Sr., 76, of Kaleva, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was born March 8, 1922, in Grand Rapids, the son of John Edward and Elizabeth Lyylli (Kangas) Troppi.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. In 1983, he retired from Ford Motor Co. where he worked as the tool crib manager. He was also an insurance salesman with the Jackson Life and American Community Life Insurance companies for almost 40 years. John was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva and a former member of the Benzie Area Masonic Lodge No. 444 F & AM, the Kaleva Lions Club, and the Eagles in Frankfort. John also enjoyed shooting pool, hunting and fishing. In 1986, in Manistee, he won the Reel Fish Contest with a 29 pound salmon.
John is survived by his wife of over 50 years, Dorothy Troppi of Kaleva; five daughters, Hope (Roland) Howes of Kaleva, Kathleen (Tim) King of Allen Park, Dorothy June (Ron) Witt of Ypsilanti, Cynthia (Bill) Husk of Canton, and Margaret (Chris) Evans of Clinton; three sons, John Edward Troppi Jr. of Kaleva, David (Connie) Troppi of Canton, and Martin Troppi of Kaleva; 24 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and three sisters, Helmi (Harvey) Schimke of Onekama; June (Ernest) Kukkonen of Onekama; and Mae Busler of Ocala, Fla.
John was preceded in death by two grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

Blaine L. Ackerman

TRAVERSE CITY - Blaine L. Ackerman, 71, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 11, 1927, in Berkley, MI, he was the son of Lafayette J. and Maude (Daugherty) Ackerman. On Oct. 15, 1954, in Berkley, MI, he married Barbara A. Taylor.
Blaine served in the U.S. Army in Korea. He was the former owner of Kwik Print in Traverse City which he co-founded in 1967 with his wife Barbara. This was the first Kwik Print in northwestern Michigan. He was a life member of the Traverse City Elks Lodge No. 323 where he was also a Past Exhaulted Ruler and Elk of the year. He was also the Chairman of the Christmas Buckets for the Salvation Army Elks Division for many years. He was a member of the Elks Mixed Doubles Bowling League and a charter member of the Elks golf league. Blaine was also a member of the Traverse City Kiwanis Club, East Bay Masonic Lodge No. 261, the Traverse City Shriners and the Saladin Temple in Grand Rapids. A member of the Lake City American Legion post No. 300. He was a past committeman for the Boy Scouts in Clawson, and a recreation commissioner in Berkley.
He enjoyed the outdoors and spending time in his cabin. He loved being with his family and friends. He had fun playing blackjack, traveling, spending time in Gulf Shores, golfing, hunting, fishing and talking with people.
Blaine had a great sense of humor, enthusisum for life, wisdom, wise words and a zest for adventure. He will be sadly missed.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara; two sons, Blaine W. (Amber) Ackerman of and Mark (Kim) Ackerman - both of Traverse City; a daughter, Beth (Larry) Hoffmann of Traverse City;and eight grand children, Jason Ackerman of Rapid City, Amy and Michael Ackerman of Berkley, MI, and Dan Hoffmann, Ashleigh, Emily, Braden and Marcus Ackerman - all of Traverse City.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, David and Mike; five brothers Rex, Don, Daryl, Dale and Lee; and five sisters, Elsie, Fay, Jean, Doreen and Betty.

Born June 27, 1920, in Nahma, he was the son of John and Ann (Wagner) Luskey.
David, a disabled veteran, served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He worked at a house painter and was an avid fisherman.

TRAVERSE CITY - Tod Michael Lautner, 29, life resident of Traverse City, died Monday of accidental injuries.
Born Nov. 9, 1969, in Traverse City, he was the son of Larry J. and Theresa M. (Fleis) Lautner.
Tod was a graduate of Traverse City Central High School where he was involved in playing football and was a member of the ski team. Tod loved hunting and snowmobiling. He was self-employed as a painter.

HONOR - Dorothy Mae Lytle, 71, died Monday at her home in Honor.
Born April 10, 1927, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Arthur and Fern (Ayers) Snyder. On Aug. 24, 1957, in Alma, she married Robert A. Lytle.
Dorothy was a retired school teacher from the Alma public schools. She retired in 1990 after teaching for 32 years. She enjoyed arts and crafts, and high school sports. She also very much enjoyed teaching and working with young children.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; a brother, Robert (Dorothy) Snyder of St. Louis, MI; two sisters-in-law, Joyce (Larry) Foster of Ithaca and Phyllis (Jim) Bomaster of Gaylord; her mother, Fern of Frankfort; and many special nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her father.

ELK RAPIDS - Dorothy H. McLain, 74, of Elk Rapids, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born April 27, 1924, in Mancelona, she was the daughter of Elmer J. and Hazel (Pascoe) Lambert. In 1951 she married Marvin Leroy McLain.
Dorothy was a resident of Elk Rapids since 1945, moving from Mancelona. She worked as a waitress and cook at numerous restaurants in the area. She attended St. Pauls Episcopal Church in Elk Rapids. She was a member and past president of the Women's Auxiliary post No. 114 in Elk Rapids. Dorothy enjoyed spending time with her grandchildren, sewing, crocheting and baking.
Survivors include a daughter, Marta (Brian) Crowley of Elk Rapids; two sons, Marvin (Denise) McLain of Traverse City and Martin J. McLain of Elk Rapids; a sister, Charlotte (Gordon) Young of Elk Rapids; 11 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Marvin in 1975; a son, Tom Mosketti; four brothers; and four sisters.

ISHPEMING - Marie E. Anderson, 92 of Ishpeming, died Wednesday at the Marquette County Medical Care Facility where she had been a resident since Dec. 7, 1998.
Marie was born Sept. 10, 1906, in Ishpeming, to the late Napoleon and Cecilia (Raisch) Pepin and was a lifelong area resident.
She and her late husband were the original owners and operators of the 581 Cash Store located in Green Creek, which they operated from the Iate forties until 1956. Marie also worked as a cook at North Lake School and Glen Lake Resort. Marie loved to cook and bake. She was a member of the St. Joseph Catholic Church where she served on the Guild and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.
Survivors include two sons, Joseph Anderson and David (Patricia) Anderson - both of Ishpeming; a daughter, Alma (John) McDowell of Kalkaska; 11 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Alfred in 1966; seven brothers; four sisters; a grandson, Mark Groesser; a great-great-grandson, Max Baldini, and a daughter-in-law, Clarann Anderson.

TRAVERSE CITY - Jessica Lynn Beckham, 21, of Traverse City, went home to be with her Lord Thursday in Leelanau County. She was born Feb. 16, 1977, in Pontiac.
She was a 1995 graduate of Brethren High School where she played basketball and was active in the band. Jessica was a member of Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva, where she taught bible school and was in the Bell Choir. She also attended the Feast of Victory Lutheran Church in Acme. Jessica enjoyed music, children and living life.
Jessica was currently employed at the Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City. She had previously worked at Crystal Mountain, Meijer in Traverse City, Burger King in Acme and McDonalds in Traverse City.
Survivors include her parents, Dennis and Frances Hill of Kaleva; three sisters, Shawna of Florida, Marty Hillard of Traverse City and Roxanne Hill of Kaleva; a brother, Michael Hill of Kaleva; her paternal grandmother, Elsie Beckham of Walled Lake; her maternal grandparents, W. Marvin and Amanda Hilliard of Manistee; numerous cousins, aunts, uncles, and nephews; and a niece.
Jessica was preceded in death by her biological father, James A. Beckham.

Orvald Charles Olsen

MAPLE CITY - Orvald Charles Olsen, 85, a lifelong farmer and Maple City resident died Thursday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
Born Feb. 21, 1913, in Port Oneida, he was the son of Charles and Hattie (Brammer) Olsen. On Nov. 2, 1935, in Leland, he married Mary Rose Hoffman.
Orvald was a member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Good Harbor. He was the first school bus driver for the Glen Lake school district in the 1930s. Orvald retired from Peninsula Asphalt Co. as a truck driver.
Survivors include three daughters, Carol (Richard) Oosdyke of Greenville, and Lorraine (Edward) Zientek and Barbara (Ernest) Zeigler - both of Maple City; two sons, William (Linda) Olsen and Gerald Olsen - both of Maple City; two stepsons, Donald (Joan) Harriger and Versal (Charlotte) Harriger - both of Empire; two sisters, Lorraine Mason of Empire and Garnet Phillips of Eustis, Fla.; 10 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren.
Orvald was preceded in death by his wife, Mary, on June 3, 1990; four brothers; two sisters; and two grandchildren.

Barbara Elizabeth 'Betty' Williams

TRAVERSE CITY - Barbara Elizabeth "Betty" Williams died Thursday at her residence in Traverse City.
She was born Nov. 26, 1932, in Detroit and was the daughter of the late Walter Lee Beckwith and Cleo Margarette Maher.
Betty married Robert Williams on Feb. 25, 1955, in Biloxi, Miss. They moved to Traverse City in 1988 from Canton. They had celebrated 43 terrific years together as husband and wife. Betty had practiced as a spiritual counselor for the previous 26 years and touched many people's lives.
Survivors include her husband, Robert; two sons, Jeffrey (Dianne) Williams and Robert (Kathy) Williams; six daughters, Lisa (Lewis) Dobry, Stacey (Phillip) Haremski, Claudia (Michael) Roe, Amanda Williams, Jessica (Ron Oakley) Williams, and Leslie Wittkop; mother, Cleo Margarette; sister, Harriet (Lawrence) Muzzarelli; brother, Robert (Becky) Beckwith; and 16 grandchildren.
Betty was preceded in death by a son, Joseph Williams.
Cremation has taken place and private family services will be held at a later date.
In lieu of flowers, the family wishes that any memorial contributions be made to the very caring Munson Hospice program.

BENZONIA - William G. Zenker, 56, died Tuesday at his home in Benzonia.
Born Sept. 6, 1942, in Thompsonville, he was the son of Frederick Paul and Nora Rebecca (Fookes) Zenker. July 16, 1965, in Benzonia, he married Paula A. Maginity.
William was a farmer and very much enjoyed his work which included logging, forestry management and building log cabins.
Survivors include his wife, Paula A.; two daughters, Susan Zenker and Amy Zenker - both of Benzonia; a son, Daniel Zenker of San Diego, Calif.; and a granddaughter, Ariella Zenker.

She was born Nov. 25, 1918, in Springfield Township to Ira E. and Eleanor (Creighton) Bardwell. On May 15, 1958, in Manton, she married Gaylord Arnold.
Norma, a lifelong resident of northern Michigan, was a member of First Christian Church in Traverse City. She enjoyed her children and grandchildren and liked to play bingo.

MESICK - Thelma Maxine Middlemiss, 82, of Mesick, died Wednesday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
She was born Feb. 24, 1916, in Ionia, the daughter of Albert and Velma (Robinson) Peterson.
In 1963 she retired from Grand Rapids Brass where she worked for 10 years as a parts inspector. Thelma was a member of the Plymouth Congregational United Church of Christ in Grand Rapids. She enjoyed knitting and baking and loved to fish.
She is survived by: her daughter, Yvonne (Arnold) Burley of Mesick; five grandchildren, Brian Middlemiss, Gregory Grooters, Michael Plumb, Carrie DeMull and Minda DeHaven; three stepgrandchildren, Rose, Lester and Shannon; 11 great-grandchildren; two stepgreat-grandchildren; two stepgreat-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lewis (Mary Margaret) Peterson of Byron Center and Wayne (Bette) Peterson of Saginaw; numerous nieces and nephews; and many friends and close neighbors.
Thelma was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth Gibson Middlemiss; two children, Maxine and Richard; and her brother, Dale Peterson.

MAYFIELD - Delia C. Wise, 97, of Mayfield, died Sunday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
Born April 18, 1901, in Groveland Township, Oakland County, she was the daughter of John Ellis and Ellen Luella (Jordan) Campbell. On May 6, 1920, in Davison, she married Charles A. Wise.
Delia lived most of her adult life in this area. She owned and operated an adult foster care home for over 20 years. She was a member of Weslyan Methodist Church, Goodrich Eastern Star in Genesee County and the Kingsley Women's Civic Club.
Survivors include five children, Marguerite Yahr of Flint, Charles Richard (Barbara) Wise of Rincon, N.M., Donald (Liz) Wise of Vernon, Ariz., Alice Patricia (James) Ryckman of Traverse City, and Mary Dee Wise of Traverse City; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; five great-great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-stepgrandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Charles; a daughter, Elizabeth Jane Hazelton; two sons-in-law, Ben Hazelton and Wilford Yahr; and 11 brothers and sisters.

FRANKFORT - Edith M. Brown, 88, died Thursday evening at her home in Frankfort.
She was born Dec. 28, 1909, in North Baltimore, Ohio, the daughter of Carl and Louise (Grimm) Hess. Edith graduated from Bowling Green State University of Ohio. She pursued her career in elementary education in Ohio for 25 years. On June 16, 1937, Edith married Clyde Brown. She and her husband retired in 1969 and moved from Toledo, Ohio, to their summer home on Long Lake, near Honor. They wintered in Bradenton, Fla. In 1991 they moved to their apartment at Michigan Shores.
Edith was a member of the Frankfort United Methodist Church and their Women's Fellowship. She was a former member of the Lake Shore Garden Club.
Survivors include three children, Carol Brown of Palm Beach, Fla., William Brown of Perrysburg, Ohio, and Robert Brown of Swartz Creek; and four grandchildren.
Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Clyde, in 1997.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday from the Frankfort United Methodist Church; the Rev. Marvin Rosa will officiate. Interment will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery.

TRAVERSE CITY - Jack London, 74, of Saginaw and Green Valley, Ariz., died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 7, 1924, in Big Rapids, he was the son of Lola and Mary Jane (Gilmer) London. On Aug. 30, 1947, in Grand Rapids, he married Marjorie A. Vis.
Jack was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Marines. He moved from Grand Rapids to Saginaw in 1956 and joined the Germania Club, the Elks and the First United Methodist Church - all of Saginaw. He had retired from Merrill Lynch as a vice president and stock broker.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie; a daughter, Linda (Randy) Williamson of Traverse City; a sister, Alma Yates of Hartford; two sisters-in-law, Frances Vis of Grandville and Ruth London of Jackson; and several nieces and nephews.
Jack was preceded in death by a brother, Ray, and a sister, Margaret Smith.

Curtis Challoner Rogers
Died December 27, 1998
BENZIE COUNTY - Curtis Challoner Rogers passed away Sunday at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort.
He was born in Oshkosh, Wis., on Feb. 15, 1913, the son of Augustus James "Gus" Rogers II and Agnes Challoner Rogers of Thrushwood Orchards in Beulah.
Curtis graduated from Benzonia High School in 1930; he served as president of his class for all four of his high school years. He graduated from Michigan State College in 1934 with a bachelor's degree in horticulture. Curtis was the first president of the MSC chapter of the Sigma Nu fraternity. He served as business manager for the college yearbook and was very active in student government at MSC.
During World War II Curtis served as director of the food rations for the United States. After the war he moved to New York City where he founded and was president of Market Research Corp. of America. When Curtis retired from the marketing business he and his wife purchased Knechtell Laboratories in Chicago, Ill. In 1976 they formed Palm Beach Confections and placed stores in several malls in Florida where homemade chocolates are produced and sold to this day.
Curtis and Marian shared a love of travel and did so extensively throughout the world.
He is survived by his wife; four children, Barbara Gardiner of Florida, Curtis Challoner Rogers Jr. (Janet) of Florida, Virginia Daugherty (John) of Frankfort, and Mary Pilcher of Okemos. He is also survived by a sister, Dorothy Lyons (James W.) of Beulah; 15 grandchildren; and 17 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.
The family requests that, in lieu of flowers, donations be made to St. Andrews Presbyterian Church of Beulah for the building fund.

Chloe Taylor Wood

INTERLOCHEN - Chloe Taylor Wood, three months, died Saturday at her home in Interlochen.
She was born Sept. 22, 1998, in Traverse City, the daughter of Jeffrey Thomas and Marla Jo (Courtney) Wood.
Chloe loved all the Christmas lights and "G'ma and G'pa's train." Her family finds comfort in knowing that Chloe is with her brother Cameron.
She is survived by her parents, Jeff and Marla Wood of Interlochen; her big brother, Logan Connor Wood; her maternal grandparents, Gary and Donna Courtney of Interlochen; her paternal grandparents, Dale Thomas and Shirley Wood of Traverse City; her maternal great-grandfather and great-grandmother, Roy James and Mary Reed of Bay Port; her paternal great-grandmother, Mary Rosinski of Traverse City; her uncle and aunt, Chris and Kelly Wood of Traverse City; her cousin, Allie Wood; and many great aunts, uncles and cousins.
Chloe was preceded in death by her twin brother, Cameron James Wood, on Nov. 26, 1998.

Dorothy L. Fox
Died December 25, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - Dorothy L. Fox, 86, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
She was born Aug. 10, 1912, in Chicago, Ill. Dorothy married Kenneth Fox on June 30, 1934. He was a partner in the Comber and Fox Supermarket in Fenton for 25 years. They resided in the Fenton area for many years and moved to Traverse City in 1965. Dorothy was a great hostess who loved parties. She enjoyed music, dancing, old movies, football and the color pink.
Survivors include several nieces and nephews and her special, good friends, Bob and Annette Kindt of Traverse City.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her husband, Kenneth, on March 30, 1989.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today from the Reigle Funeral Home, Sunset Chapel, 5501 W. Pierson Road, Flushing. Burial will follow in Sunset Hills Cemetery in Flint.
Memorial gifts in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society.
Gladys (Harvey) Gainer
Died December 25, 1998
EAST LANSING - Gladys Harvey Gainer, 99, of East Lansing, and a former resident of Grand Traverse County, died Friday.
She was born in Nairn, Ontario, Canada, on August 12, 1899, the daughter of George and Margaret Harvey. When she was six months old she moved with her parents to Old Mission in Grand Traverse County where she lived until her marriage in 1928.
She loved children and was a teacher for 28 years at schools in Acme, Bates, Kingsley, Old Mission, Mapleton, Traverse City, Rennie and Buckley. She retired from Haslett Junior High School after serving for 12 years as a history and geography teacher. Gladys moved to East Lansing in 1952 and became an active member of Peoples Church.
Surviving are her two sons, Ronald L. (Sherry) Gainer of Arlington, Va., and Gordon R. (Donna) Gainer of East Lansing; two grandsons, Gregory (Linda) Gainer of Reston, Va., and Geoffrey Gainer of San Francisco, Calif.; two granddaughters, Jennifer (Tom) Crites of Okemos and Kristin (Jeffrey) De Vries of Rochester Hills; and six great-grandchildren, Joshua, Zachary and Haley Crites, Corinne and Monica De Vries, and Oliver Gainer.
Preceding Gladys in death was her husband of 55 years, Asher L. Gainer, and her sister, Hazel Mann.
At her request there will be no service.

BEULAH - Frank Arthur Harris, 70, of Beulah, died Sunday at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City.
Born March, 1, 1928, in Beulah, he was the son of James Arthur and Effie (Fullerton) Harris.
Frank was a veteran and a retired excavator. His most important concern was his family. Frank enjoyed keeping bees.
Survivors include four daughters, Carolyn (Keith) Springman of Beulah, Teresa Basileo of Bothwell, Wash., Brenda (Bill) Snell of Lake Ann, and Bev (Scott) Fuller of Cedar Springs; two sons, David Harris of Beulah, and Allen Harris of Kalamazoo; four sisters, Florence (Albert) Hanna of Belding, Bertha (Ray) Lentz of Beulah, Betty (Al) Church of Beulah, and Martha (John) Bell of Beulah; nine grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Frank was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Wilma.
Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home; Mr. Mickey Sparks will officiate. Burial will be in Benzonia Township Cemetery.

TRAVERSE CITY - Charles F. Moehle, 82, of Traverse City and Titusville, Fla., died Friday at Parrish Medical Center in Titusville.
Charles was born in Washington D.C. A retired electrical contractor, he was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and the Knights of Columbus in Traverse City. He was a member of St. Teresa Catholic Church in Titusville. Charles served as an usher for both churches.
Survivors include his wife, Anna Marie Moehle of Traverse City and Titusville; a son, Charles Moehle of Troy; a daughter, Sharon Wuolukka of Southfield; a son, Edward Moehle of Royal Oak; a daughter, Sandra Moehle of West Hartford, Conn.; a daughter, Sue Zoner of Royal Oak; a son, Richard Moehle of Davisburg; a son, Keith Moehle of Paradise, Calif.; a sister, Francis Pogan of Oak Harbor, Ohio; 12 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of the LaSalette in Berkley.

Patrick W. Batterbee
Died December 29, 1998
CENTRAL LAKE - Patrick W. Batterbee, 55, died Tuesday at his home in Central Lake.
He was born March 7, 1943, in Central Lake Township, the son of Earl and Velma (Duplessis) Batterbee. On June 21, 1965, in Saginaw, he married Judie Graham, and they made their home in Birch Run. They moved back to Central Lake in 1968.
Patrick owned Batterbee Roofing in Central Lake. He enjoyed pheasant hunting, deer hunting and wood working.
Surviving are his wife, Judie; children, Keith Archie (Melissa) Batterbee of Ocala, Fla., Charise (Jeff) Patton of East .Jordan, Tammy Batterbee of Central Lake and Belvia Batterbee at home; six grandchildren; his mother, Velma Batterbee of Cenlral Lake; a brother, Keith Batterbee of Central Lake; and a sister Marvel (Norm) Rushton of Central Lake.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Hastings Funeral Home in Ellsworth. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Bible Baptist Church in Central Lake; the Rev. Thomas Hunter will officiate. Burial will be in Lakeview Cemetery.

Kenneth F. Gordon

TRAVERSE CITY - Kenneth F. Gordon, 68, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 17, 1930, in Merlin, Ontario, Canada, he was the son of Franklin and Victoria (Ferguson) Gordon.
Kenneth, a pipeline welder, was a member of the pipeliners union No. 798. He loved shooting pool, golf and socializing with his friends. He was a great storyteller and also enjoyed boating.
Survivors include a son, Kenneth Michael (Joyce) Gordon of Alberta, Canada, and their children, Tracey, Stephanie, Kathryn and Krista; three daughters, Shelia (William) Byberg of Bay Harbor, and their children, Shannon and Alicia, Joanne (Brian) Foley of Waterford, and their son, Jason, and Vanessa (Jay) Rousch of Kingsley, and their children, Allyn, Justin, Jen‚, Louise, and Ian; and a sister Frances Ann Patrick of Merlin, Ontario, Canada.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
In lieu of flowers the family asks that memorial contributions be directed to the American Heart Association.

TRAVERSE CITY - Darlene K. Olk, 54, died Monday at her home in Traverse City.
Born April 20, 1944, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Ervin and Mildred (Lindtner) Bark.
Darlene, a home maker, lived in northern Michigan all of her life. She loved being a home maker and enjoyed gardening, especially flowers. She was proficient at a variety of crafts and was an avid reader.
Survivors include a child, Barbara Olk of Traverse City; her parents, Ervin and Mickey Bark of Traverse City; a sister, Pat (Joe) Garrish of Hertford, N.C.; her fiancee, Florian Czerniak of Traverse City, and his two children, Craig Czerniak and Dawn (Brian) Hounsell - both of Cedar; a nephew, Jamie (Koren) Garrish of Hertford, N.C.; a niece, Amy (Tom) Jara of Colorado Springs, Colo.; and three great-nieces and a great-nephew.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes where a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church; the Rev. James Gardiner will officiate. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Cemetery.

Frederick T. 'Fred' Cupples
Died December 29, 1998
FRANKFORT - Frederick T. "Fred" Cupples, 77, formerly of Ferndale and resident of Benzie County since 1982, died early Tuesday morning at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort.
Fred was born on Dec. 22, 1921, in Detroit, the son of Thomas Patrick and Mary (Schubring) Cupples. He was united in marriage to Shirley Jene Richards on March 28, 1942, at St. Benedict's Church in Highland Park.
Fred served the country honorably in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He attended the University of Michigan Firefighting Science College, and utilized this knowledge as the chief engineer and firefighter for the city of Ferndale for 31 years.
Upon his move to northern Michigan in 1982, Fred became active in many community activities. He was a member and head usher at St. Ann Catholic Church in Frankfort. He also belonged to the St. Ann Men's Club, North Lakes Ski and Spree Club, Metropolitan Club, Gleaners, International Association of Firefighters, Platte River Association, Frankfort American Legion Post No. 221 and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7544 of Beulah. Fred was a very caring and giving man and volunteered his time with the following community organizations, The Maples for 14 Years, Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital as "Mr. Claus," Benzie Area Christian Neighbors, Benzie Area Steelheaders, Adopt-A-Highway program and Munson Medical Center Home Health Care.
Fred is survived by his wife, Shirley of Frankfort, a son, Thomas of Ferndale, a daughter, Candy Shinabarger of Beulah, a daughter-in-law, Leslie Cupples Lawson of Troy; a brother, George (Iris) McIntyre of Centerville, Ohio; a sister-in-law, Irene Cupples of Berkley; grandchildren, Colleen and Thomas Cupples, Adam Shinabarger, and Bryan Lawson; and foster grandchildren, Kevin and Carl Lints.
He was preceded in death by his brother, John Cupples.
The Funeral Liturgy for Fred will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Frankfort; Msgr. David Gemuend will be the Celebrant. Visitation will be held from 2 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia, where a scripture reading led by Pastor Rick Stieve of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort will be held at 7 p.m. Burial will take place this spring in the Gilmore Township Cemetery.

C. Allen Parrish
Died December 28, 1998
DEFIANCE, Ohio - C. Allen Parrish, 57, died Monday morning at his home in Defiance.
Born June 24, 1941, in Lebanon, he was the son of Howard and Dorothy (Corwin) Parrish. On June 9, 1962, he married Ruth Schmunk.
Allen was employed by the Zeller Corp. and had worked for SK Wayne Handtools and Midwest Forge in Kalkaska, Mich. He was a member of Amvets post 1991, the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge No. 372, and the Loyal Order of Moose - all in Defiance.
Survivors include his wife, Ruth Parrish; a daughter, Stacey (Robert) Rohrs of Napoleon; a son, Kier Parrish of Kalkaska, Mich.; seven brothers, Jack Parrish of Henderson, Ky., Joseph and Dennis Parrish of Defiance, Lynn Parrish of Van Wert, Howard Parrish of Fort Wayne, Ind., William Parrish of Daytona, Fla., and James Parrish of Wallace, Mich.; two sisters, Linda (Steve) Fisher of Defiance and Katherine Butts of Jacksonville, Fla.; and two grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at Mast-Mock-Hoffman Funeral Home in Defiance. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home; the Rev. Bryan Maxey will officiate. Burial will be in Hedges Cemetery in Paulding County.

Esther U. Smith
Died December 29, 1998
TRAVERSE CITY - Esther U. Smith, 87, died Tuesday at her home in Traverse City.
Born May 19, 1911, in Denmark, she was the daughter of Chris and Anna (Miller) Andersen. On Jan. 5, 1964, in Traverse City, she married Carl W. Smith.
Esther moved to Iowa at age three, coming from Denmark and then moved to Michigan in 1930. She enjoyed gardening and sewing. She was a bookkeeper having worked for the Diana Shops, F.A. Earl and Woolworth's.
Survivors include her husband, Carl of Traverse City; four grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and a brother, Paul Andersen of Cedar Rapids, Iowa.
She was preceded in death by her daughter, Joan Hippensteel; her parents; and a sister, Thyra Schweitzer.
Graveside services will be held in the spring. Burial will be in the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Munson Hospice or the American Cancer Society.

Theodore R. Wills
Died December 28, 1998
NORTHPORT - Theodore R. Wills, 80, of Northport, died Monday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
He was employed by National Twist Drill and Tool Co. of Rochester for 34 years. At the time of his retirement he was Administrative Vice President, National Twist Drill Division of Lear Seigler, Inc.
Ted was a 1940 graduate of Williams College. Following graduation he attended Midshipman School at Columbia University where he was Regimental Commander of his class of one thousand men. During World War II he served in the Pacific as a naval lieutenant on the battleship Alabama and later with the fourth Marine Division as a Naval Gunfire Liason Officer.
After the war he resided in Birmingham, where he was a member of the Birmingham Athletic Club. He served on the vestry of Christ Church Cranbrook and was a member of the choir. In 1974 he moved to Northport where he was affiliated with Schmidt Real Estate in Suttons Bay for five years. Ted was an active member of St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Northport and a Board member of Leelanau Memorial Hospital where he also did volunteer work. Ted enjoyed golf, tennis, bridge and classical music.
He was born September 8, 1918, in Lancaster, Pa., to John Paul and Sarah (Johnson) Wills. In l929 upon the death of his parents he became the foster son of Grace and Charles Rebert of New Rochelle, N.Y.,and later of Birmingham. On June 12, 1942, he married Ethel Boyd Moore in New Rochelle, N.Y., who survives.
Survivors include; a son, George (Angela) Wills of Novi; two daughters, Carol Wills-Murphy of Easton, Md., and Jennlfer (Joseph) Wills-Allen of Madison, Wis.; nine grandchildren, Paul, Brian, Jennifer and Stephen Murphy, Benjamin and Jessica Allen, Brett (Brigitte), Todd, and Reed (Victoria) Wills; two stepgrandchildren, Kirsten and Marc Hoffmann; and two great-grandchildren, Lindsey and Derrick Wills.
Services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Christopher's Episcopal Church (St. Gertrude's) in Northport.
Memorial contributions may be directed to; Leelanau Memorial Health Center, St. Christopher's Episcopal Church in Northport, or the Leelanau Conservancy.
