MARY J. GARY, 62, of Benzonia, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at home.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah.
     
      JOYCE MOORE, 54, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, in Muskegon.
      Arrangements will be announced later by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      STEPHANIE M. SLABY, 72, of Grayling, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Grayling. A former resident of Jackson, Stephanie was a homemaker. She was born May 9, 1926, in Jackson.
      Visitation will be held from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling where a wake service will be held at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Grayling. Burial will be in St. John's Catholic Cemetery in Jackson.
     
      HARRY J. STEPHENS, 72, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey. Harry was born in Pontiac June 1, 1926.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.
     
      Winifred (Paradise) Alberts
      Died March 29,1999
      BEULAH - Winifred (Paradise) Alberts, 91, died Tuesday in Frankfort.
      Born Aug. 9, 1907, in Thompsonville, she was the daughter of Alphonso and Ada Paradise. Winifred lived in the Benzie County and Traverse City areas most of her life, with the exception of winters she spent on Florida.
      A Licensed Practical Nurse, Winifred worked at Munson Hospital in Traverse City, the music camp at Interlochen and the Children's Hospital in Umatilla, Fla., and also cared for elderly persons in their homes.
      Winifred is survived by five nieces; three nephews and their spouses; her dear friend, Lucille Acha of Honor, who was her senior companion for many, many years; and her dear friend, Viola (Jamie) McGlary of Freeland, who attended nurses training with her 70 years ago.
      Winifred wished to be cremated, and per her request, there will be no funeral services. She will be interred in the Thompsonville Cemetery with a private memorial at a later date.
      Arrangements were handled by Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      Maxine Y. Clayton
      Died March 30, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Maxine Y. Clayton, 80, of Traverse City died Tuesday, at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 12, 1919, in West Virginia, she was the daughter of Nelson and Leona (McCauley) Sutton. On Aug. 23, 1939, in Detroit, she married Robert W. Clayton.
      A former resident of Farmington, Maxine moved to this area in 1970. She was a member of the First Christian Church in Manton and the Eastern Star. Maxine liked to volunteer at a nursing home in Cadillac. She enjoyed cooking, crafts, her family, friends and neighbors.
      Surviving are her four children, Larry N. Clayton of Farmington Hills, Barbara (Denis) Martin of Farmington Hills, Dawn (Bill) Martin of Scottsdale, Ariz., and Diane (Willie) McIntyre of Traverse City; one brother, John (Vera) Davies of Florida; 11 grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Maxine was preceded in death by her husband, Robert W., on April 18, 1998; her parents; a daughter, Judy Clayton, in 1997; and a granddaughter, Cindy Martin, in 1990.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Bible Baptist Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Jerry Bauman will officiate. Burial will be in Greenwood Township Cemetery after cremation.
      Memorials may be directed to the First Christian Church in Manton.
     
      Betty Jane Colvin
      Died March 30, 1999
      ELBERTA - Betty Jane Colvin, 75, a resident of Elberta since 1980, formerly of Flint, died Tuesday morning at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born July 15, 1923, in Flint, Betty was the daughter of William and Sarah Elizabeth (Dutton) Hale. On Feb. 16, 1942, in Flint, she was united in marriage to Arza Colvin.
      Betty attended the University of Michigan and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in education. She taught for the Kearsley schools in Flint from 1965 to 1980. Betty enjoyed flower gardening, computers, needlework and fishing.
      Betty is survived by her husband, Arza; a son, Randall of Kalkaska; and three sisters, Irene Money, Laurette Thompson, and Geneva Carpenter.
      She was preceded in death by her parents.
      Friends may visit with the family from noon to 1 p.m. Saturday at the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes. Memorial services will be held for Betty at 1 p.m. at the funeral home; Pastor Mark Tolosa will officiate.
      Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial contribution in Betty's memory to the Habitat for Humanity or the American Diabetes Association.
     
      Emma Luise Hart
      Died March 30, 1999
      FRANKFORT - Emma Luise Hart, formerly of Saginaw, and a longtime Benzie County resident, died Tuesday evening at The Maples Medical Care Facility in Frankfort at the age of 96.
      Emma was born March 29, 1903, in Arcadia, the daughter of Edward and Emma (Potratz) Lentz. She was united in marriage to Frank Hart on July 12, 1925, in Saginaw. Frank passed away in 1980. Emma was also preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Charles, Edward, Paul, and Henry Lentz; and two sisters, Ida and Alma Lentz, in infancy.
      Emma was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia and the church's Ladies Aid group. She enjoyed cooking, crocheting and sewing. Emma found pleasure in getting together with friends and playing cards, and speaking German with others who spoke German. Emma enjoyed many things, but what gave her the most fulfillment in her life were her grandchildren, church activities and music.
      Emma is survived by one son, Frank O. (Dolores) Hart of Port St. Lucie, Fla.; three daughters, Bernice (Michael) Demko of Mount Dora, Fla., Geraldine (Claude) Forrester of Thompsonville, and Joan (Arthur) Moseler of Elberta and Moorehaven, Fla. Also surviving are her brother, Arthur Lentz of Honor; sister, Clara Lentz of Frankfort; 16 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.
      Visitation will take place from 1 p.m. to 2 p.m. Good Friday at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Benzonia. Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the church; the Rev. Daniel Henke will officiate. Burial will take place in the Benzonia Township Cemetery next to her husband.
      Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial contribution in Emma's memory to either Our Savior Lutheran Church or The Maples Medical Care Facility.
      The family was served by the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, in Benzonia.
     
      RUTH (KUYKENDALL) BOLING, 74, of Kalkaska, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born May 25, 1924, in Hendersonville, N.C.
      A memorial graveside service will be held May 25. Arrangements are by the Wolfe Funeral Home of Kalkaska.
     
      FRANK VICTOR LUDKA, 89, of Traverse City, died Thursday evening, April 1, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      FERNON MILFORD PARRISH, 89, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, March 30, 1999, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City. Fernon was born Feb. 27, 1910 in Calhoon County.
      A gathering of family and friends will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Thursday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.
     
      FLORA FERN SNYDER, 94, passed away Thursday, April 1, 1999, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Beulah.
     
      GERALD J. SUPERCZYNSKI, 69, of Manistee, died Wednesday, March 31, 1999, at West Shore Hospital in Manistee.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Shrine in Manistee.
     
      SCOT L. WILLIAMS, 30, of South Boardman, died Tuesday evening, March 30, 1999, at his home. Scot was born March 16, 1969.
      Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Kalkaska Church of Christ. A second memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      James Baird Gragg Jr.
      Died March 31, 1999
      MAPLE CITY - James Baird Gragg Jr., 81, of Maple City, formerly of Detroit, died Wednesday at home.
      Born Dec. 17, 1917, in Centralia, Ill., he was the son of James Baird Gragg Sr. and Effie L. (Barr) Gragg. On July 27, 1968, in East Detroit, he married Mary G. Chambers.
      James was a proud 35 year member of the United Auto Workers union, where he served as an auditor.
      Survivors include his wife, Mary of Maple City; two daughters, Gloria Flahault of Carmel, Ind., and Susan (Timothy) Confer of Fayetteville, N.C.; one son, Samuel F. Chambers of Brighton; one brother, Richard Gragg of Sacramento, Calif.; five grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; two nieces; and one nephew.
      No services are planned. Cremation has taken place. Arrangements were handled by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.

      Lars F. Halvorsen
      Died April 1, 1999
      ELMWOOD TOWNSHIP - Lars Fridtjof Halvorsen, 77, of northern Elmwood Township, died Thursday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born at his grandparents' home on Old Mission Peninsula Jan. 2, 1922, Lars grew up on the family farm in Solon Township in Leelanau County. He was the son of Fritz and Malvina (Lyon) Halvorsen.
      Lars graduated from Traverse City High School in 1940. He served with the U.S. Navy Seabees in the Philippines during World War II, from 1942 to 1946, for three years, three months and three days.
      Lars was employed in the construction business for many years and did hobby farming as well. Together with his family, he established the first supervised pick-your-own strawberry harvest on their Elmwood Township farm, which he operated for 29 years. It was his joy to serve returning customers year after year for the beautiful fruit from God's good earth.
      On October 15, 1949, he married Wanda Lavender in Coral. Besides his wife, he is survived by his four children, Lynn (Kathy) of Kalamazoo, Sid (Dana) of Traverse City, Deanna (George) Smith of Farmington Hills, and Neil of Chicago; two grandsons, Brandon and Ryan Halvorsen of Kalamazoo; one brother, Eric (Dolores) Halvorsen of Sheridan; one brother-in-law, Wayne Lavender of Rockford; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
      Preceding him in death were his parents and sister, Sonya Kidney.
      A memorial service will be held at 12:30 p.m. Monday at Faith Reformed Church in Traverse City; the Pastor Philip Noordmans will officiate. The family will greet friends following the service. Family graveside services will be held at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens. Arrangements are being handled by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      In lieu of flowers, the family's choice of memorials would be a contribution to the Edenizing Program at the Alzheimer's unit of Grand Traverse Pavilions.
     
      Joyce A. Moore
      Died March 30, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Joyce A. Moore, 54, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Intensiva Hospital in Muskegon.
      Born May 31, 1944, she was the daughter of Elmer and Joyce (Banks) Graves. On June 28, 1963, in Kalamazoo, she married Patrick D. Moore.
      Joyce loved to garden and enjoyed her house plants and flowers. She also enjoyed and loved her cats.
      Survivors include her husband, Patrick; two sons, Patrick Moore II of Traverse City and David (Mary) Moore of Kalkaska; her mother, Joyce Graves of Lansing; a sister, Barbara (Timothy) Pitcher of Onondaga; two brothers, James Graves of Lansing, and Elmer Graves II of Texas; and two grandchildren, Donovan Moore and Sarah Moore.
      She was preceded in death by her father.

      Betty Grace Riggs
      Died March 31, 1999
      OVIATT - Betty Grace Riggs, 78, of Oviatt and Lillian, Ala., died Wednesday in Pensacola, Fla.
      A homemaker, Betty was born Feb. 26, 1921 in Alma.
      Betty is survived by her husband, Glenn, of Oviatt and Lillian; a brother, Robert Stewart; five children, Virginia Biederman of Arizona, David Riggs of Indiana, James Riggs of Empire, Linda Adsit of Grand Haven, and Mary Kay Riggs of Michigan; eight grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
      Betty was preceded in death by her mother, Bea Ragan; and a sister, Ella Martin.
      Cremation will take place in Florida. Memorial services will be June 5 in the Traverse City area.
      Arrangements were handled by Pensacola Memorial Gardens and Funeral Home in Pensacola.
     
      Arthur E. VerSluis
      Died April 1, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Arthur E. "Art" VerSluis, 85, of Traverse City, died April 1, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      He was born March 4, 1914, to Jacob and Tillie (Knyff) VerSluis of Grand Rapids. Art graduated from Union High School and from Lucid Business College in Grand Rapids.
      On Sept. 23, 1936, he married Lucille Ann Provencher at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; the Rev. William Scheuller performed the ceremony.
      Art and Lucille lived in Battle Creek, Grand Rapids and Traverse City when he was a manager with Michigan Bakeries. They traveled the United States while he was an auditor with U.S. Rubber Co. Art also served as a comptroller at Zenith Carburetor Co. - a division of Bendix Aviation Corp. of Detroit. They returned to Traverse City in 1955 to establish Town and Country Realty. At that time, Art was notified that he was the first in this area to complete all the real estate courses offered by the University of Michigan. While a real estate broker, he was a member and officer of the Traverse City Board of Realtors. He was also a member of the Michigan Real Estate Association, the National Association of Real Estate Boards and the Real Estate Alumni of Michigan. Art was named Realtor Emeritus in 1985 by the Traverse City Real Estate Board. He and his good friend Joseph F. Schmidt were appraisers for many local and out-of-town attorneys, banks and corporations. Art was also involved in many civic projects and was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church.
      Survivors include his wife, Lucille; a brother, Robert (Bonnie) VerSluis of Grand Rapids; three sisters-in-law, Virginia VerSluis of Grand Rapids, Eleanor VerSluis of Byron Center, and Victoria Provencher of Traverse City; two brothers-in-law, Donald Provencher of Traverse City and Gene Provencher of Mount Clemens; 16 nieces and nephews; 27 great-nieces and great-nephews; and several cousins.
      Art was preceded in death by two brothers, Jack of Grand Rapids and David of Byron Center - both in 1997; a sister-in-law, Catherine Hanley, in 1979; a brother-in-law, Robert Provencher of Traverse City, in 1998; a sister-in-law, Edith Provencher of Mount Clemens, in 1995; and a nephew, William "Bill" Provencher of Mount Clemens, in 1990.
      Memorial services will be planned for a later date. Burial will take place in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Carmelite Monastery or to St. Francis Catholic Church.
      The family is being served by the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
     
      JOSEPHINE DENO, 74, of McAllen, Texas, died March 25, 1999.
      A memorial service will be held at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday. Burial will be in Maplegrove Cemetery in Grawn.
     
      TRACY B. IRISH SR., 75, of Williamsburg, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Munson Medical Center.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. A full obituary will appear in the Monday Record-Eagle.
      CLIFTON DEWITT PITTS, 75, of Mesick, died Thursday, April 1, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. Clifton was born April 16, 1923, in Phillippi, Tenn.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
     
      Frank Victor Ludka
      Died April 1, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Frank Victor Ludka, 89, died Thursday afternoon at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City, surrounded by his family.
      A native of Traverse City, he was born Feb. 15, 1910, the son of Walter C. and Antonia (Moravec) Ludka, a pioneer family of the Traverse City area. On June 28, 1933, he married Lillian Antony at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City.
      Frank attended Immaculate Conception School and graduated from St. Francis High School in 1927. He attended Western Michigan College in Kalamazoo.
      A veteran of the U.S. Navy, he served during World War II. He owned and operated Ludka Grocery for ten years. He was formerly employed by Montgomery Ward and Paul Garthe's, where he had worked as a shipping and receiving manager. For over 20 years he served as an independent post office carrier of airmail to and from the local airport.
      Frank served as athletic director when football was started at St. Francis High School. He saw his son Walter play on that team. He also arranged contracts for basketball and baseball. He sold tickets at home sports games for many years and was seldom able to see his children and grandchildren play. Many years ago he received a "Golden Pass" from the athletic association for his dedication to his school.
      Many hours were spent by Frank on parish and school events, such as rummage sales, carnivals, sports events and dinners. He served on the Oakwood Catholic Cemetery committee for many years.
      Frank was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and St. Francis Men's Club, Knights of Columbus, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Fraternal Order of Eagles, Theta Chi Delta of Western Michigan College, and a life member of the Northwestern Michigan Fair Association.
      Frank was a good and faithful friend to anyone in need. He kept a watchful eye on his neighborhood, helping and giving advice when asked. He was an ample provider for his family, very giving to others, while being stingy with himself.
      His home and his family gave Frank great joy. He always managed to have some toys, tricycles or bicycles reconditioned for whomever came by to visit Grandpa. He enjoyed gardening on his 33 foot lot, and was proud of his front yard grass. He liked to go grocery shopping and coupons were his joy. He traveled to Europe five times, as well as numerous trips to Florida, California, Las Vegas and Hawaii.
      Survivors include his wife, Lillian Antony Ludka of Traverse City; his children, Walter (Judy) Ludka of Brussels, Belgium and Traverse City, Ruth (Wilfred) Holsather of Midland, Lawrence (Loretta) Ludka of Traverse City, Elizabeth (Paul) Leask of Kalkaska, Elaine (David) Kozlowski of Traverse City, Virginia (Edward) Schram of Traverse City, Frank Ludka II of Traverse City, and Charles Ludka of Traverse City; 18 grandchildren; 24 great-grandchildren; nieces; nephews; and cousins.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Bernard, Robert, and Donald Ludka; and three sisters, Viola Emerson, Beatrice Garland, and Mary Louise Ludka.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A rosary will be recited Monday at 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City with the Rev. William Lipscomb officiating. Burial will be at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.

      Violet Lillian
      Matheson
      Died March 30, 1999
      JACKSON - Violet Lillian Matheson, 94, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday at Vista Grande Villa in Jackson
      Born July 31, 1904, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Robert John and Anna (Truax) Leamington, Canadian immigrants from Normid, Canada.
      Violet graduated from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, a city surrounded by Detroit, where she was active in women's sports. Following high school, she enrolled at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, with emphasis in physical education.
      Violet is survived by her son, Robert of Ann Arbor; son-in-law, Richard Avis of Holt; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
      Preceding her in death were her husband, Kenneth John of Traverse City, in March 1990; her daughter, Marian Eleanor Avis of Holt, in Dec. 1996; and her sister, Evelyn Petit.
      Following cremation, Violet's cremains will be put to rest with her husband and other members of her family at the Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Gift and Memorial Fund at Vista Grande Villa, 2251 Springport Road, Jackson, MI., 49202.

      Flora Fern Snyder
      Died April 1, 1999
      FRANKFORT - Flora Fern Snyder, 94, of Frankfort, died Thursday at the Maples-Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort.
      Born April 9, 1904, in Mount Pleasant, she was the daughter of Frank and Sarah (Landon) Ayers. On Oct. 16, 1926, in Lansing, she married Arthur Snyder. Flora was a very good homemaker. She also enjoyed playing cards and bingo.
      Survivors include her son, Robert (Dorothy) Snyder of St. Louis, Mich.; three grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and many nieces and nephews.
      Flora was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Arthur; and her daughter, Dorothy Lytle.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Chapel Gardens Cemetery in Alma.
      Memorials may be made to the charity of one's choice.
     
      CHARLOTTE F. B. CLAPSADDLE, 95, of Alma, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at the Masonic Home in Alma.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Peterson Funeral Home In Cadillac. An Eastern Star service will be at 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home, with burial in Omard Cemetery in Flynn Township.
     
      AGNES E. KEILS, 96, of Bellaire, formerly of Detroit, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. A retired music teacher, she was born November 24, 1902, in Duluth, Minn.
      A memorial Mass to be held in Detroit will be announced at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      MARTIN O. KILLIAN, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Private family services will be held later. Arrangements are being handled by the Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service of Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in the Monday Record-Eagle.
     
      DALE PETTENGILL, 87, of Grayling, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at his residence. He was born March 4, 1912, in Sunfield, and was a retired engineer.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel in Grayling. Masonic rites and funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home. Burial will be immediately following in Elmwood Cemetery in Grayling.
     
      JULIA THOMAS, 81, of Mancelona, died Friday, April 2, 1999, at St. Anthony's Nursing Care Center in Warren.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona. The family will receive friends from 10 a.m. until the service time Monday at the funeral home.
     
      Violet Lillian Matheson
      Died March 30, 1999
      JACKSON - Violet Lillian Matheson, 94, of Jackson, passed away Tuesday at Vista Grande Villa in Jackson.
      Born July 31, 1904, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Robert John and Anna (Truax) Leamington, Canadian immigrants from Normid, Canada.
      Violet graduated from Highland Park High School in Highland Park, a city surrounded by Detroit, where she was active in women's sports. Following high school, she enrolled at Eastern Michigan University in Ypsilanti, with emphasis in physical education.
      Violet is survived by her son, Robert of Ann Arbor; son-in-law, Richard Avis of Holt; eight grandchildren; and 21 great-grandchildren.
      Preceding her in death were her husband, Kenneth John of Traverse City, in March 1990; her daughter, Marian Eleanor Avis of Holt, in Dec. 1996; and her sister, Evelyn Petit.
      Following cremation, Violet's cremains will be put to rest with her husband and other members of her family at the Woodlawn Cemetery on Woodward Avenue in Detroit.
      In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Gift and Memorial Fund at Vista Grande Villa, 2251 Springport Road, Jackson, MI., 49202.

      Herbert E. Curry
      Died March 19, 1999
      SUTTONS BAY - Herbert E. Curry, 80, of Sea Level, N.C., formerly of Suttons Bay, died March 19, 1999, in Sea Level.
      Born Feb. 14, 1919, in Bingham, he was the son of Andrew and Amelia (Schultz) Curry. He was the oldest of three children.
      Upon completing school, Herbert worked on the car ferry in Ludington until March of 1942 when he joined the Army. As a World War II veteran, he was honorably discharged in January of 1946. Herbert returned to Michigan, working as a prison guard in Jackson, as an orderly at the Henry Ford Hospital, and as an auto plant worker. He then returned to work as an able seaman on the ore carriers. On Jan. 1, 1949, he began his life's career as an able seaman unlimited for ESSO.
      In 1960, Herbert married Ruth Shumsky and became stepfather to her daughter, Judith. To their marriage two children were born: a son, Dale and a daughter, Gail Lynn.
      Herbert retired from Exxon in March 1971 after 22 years of service. A year later, he began working for the village of Suttons Bay as a maintenance man. He retired from that job in January of 1984. Upon final retirement and for health reasons, Herb moved to North Carolina in November of 1984. He then called home "The Sailors' Snug Harbor" of Sea Level, which is the nation's only retirement home exclusive to merchant mariners.
      Herb enjoyed 14 years as a member of their community and made many friends. He will be missed by many and is remembered as an amiable, gentle man, who always had a smile and a kind word.
      His hobbies were reading, doing crosswords, and dining out. He was a fan of Chicago Cubs baseball. His interests included current and historical events, and he loved to reminisce with family and friends. He was fond of animals, particularly the family cats. He enjoyed ships and locomotives and could be found reading their magazines or watching videos on them.
      Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth, who passed away Feb. 25, 1978.
      Survivors include his children, son, Dale O. Curry of Traverse City, daughter, Gail L. "Punkin" Curry of Traverse City, and step-daughter, Judy (Gerard) Stallman of Suttons Bay; grandsons Ryan and Paul Stallman of Suttons Bay, a sister, Helen Dean of Iron Mountain; a brother, Ralph Curry, who resides at the Curry Family farm in Suttons Bay; and many nieces and nephews.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. The Rev. Wayne Dziekan will officiate. Interment will follow at the St. Michael's Cemetery, Suttons Bay.

      C. HELEN PERKETT, 85, of Traverse City, died Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

      COZETTE 'COOKIE' SEELEY, 45, of Lake City, passed away Saturday, April 3, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Cadillac. She was a homemaker.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Young Funeral Home in Lake City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Lake City Christian Reformed Church. Burial will be in Lux Cemetery in Marion.
     
     
      Ardith Marie Fritch
      Died April 2, 1999
      FRANKFORT- Ardith Marie Fritch, a lifelong resident of Benzie County, died Good Friday afternoon at The Maples Medical Care Facility in Frankfort at the age of 69 years.
      Ardith was born July 16, 1929, in Frankfort, the daughter of Martin Christopher and Abbie Almina (Davidson) Lentz. She was united in marriage to Clinton Addison Fritch at the Blaine Christian Church in Arcadia, on Aug. 23, 1947. Clinton passed away Dec. 8, 1991.
      Ardith was a homemaker and cherry farmer. She was a member of the Blaine Christian Church and the church's Christian Womens Fellowship Group. She was also a member of the Benzie Area Farm Bureau. Ardith enjoyed square dancing, farming, flowers, sewing, shopping, cooking and traveling, but what gave her the most enjoyment was her family.
      Ardith is survived by one son, Duane (Cheryl) Fritch of Lake Belton, Texas; and two daughters, Dawn (Michael) Waning of Maple City and Diana (Edwin) Alkire of Benzonia. Also surviving are a sister, Reatha (William) Rayle of Lake Ann; grandchildren, Joseph Demerly of Bear Lake, Christopher Demerly of Honor, and Thomas Waning of Maple City, seven stepgrandchildren, two great-grandchildren; and 15 stepgreat-grandchildren.
      Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday and from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia. Visitation will also be held one hour prior to services which will take place at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Blaine Christian Church; the former pastor of the church, Rick Branaman, will officiate. Burial will take place in Joyfield Township cemetery where Ardith will be buried next to her husband, Clinton.

      Gunnard John Hulkonen
      Died April 3, 1999
      KALEVA - Gunnard John Hulkonen of Kaleva died Saturday morning at his residence in Maple Grove Township, just short of reaching his 90th birthday.
      He was born April 8, 1909, in Atlantic Mine, Mich., the son of Henry and Hilda Hulkonen. Gunnard moved to Kaleva in 1945.
      A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army as a military police officer. Gunnard was a retired farmer, builder and inventor, In partnership with his brother, Arthur, he owned and operated the Hulkonen Farm.
      Survivors include two daughters, Belinda (Charles) Lebano of Lake Worth, Fla., and Sheila M. Fitzgerald of Kaleva; two granddaughters, Tiffany Lebano and Brigitte Lebano - both of Lake Worth; a grandson, Sgt. Eric Lebano of the U.S. Marines, stationed in The Hauge, Netherlands; four brothers, Sulo (Hazel) Hulkonen of Kaleva, Aimo Hulkonen of Nisula, Arthur (Mildred) Hulkonen of Kaleva, and Edward (Shirley) Hulkonen of Nisula; four sisters, Sylvia Curtin of Lake Linden, Helmi Hospenthal of Kaleva, Linda Wade of Neganee, and Mildred Lampinen of Atlantic Mine; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      On Dec. 14, 1946, in Manistee, Gunnard married Edna Jouppi who preceded him in death on Oct. 19, 1994. Also preceding him in death were an infant daughter; his son-in-law, Charles Moseley; and three brothers, Urho, Weikko, and Toivo.
      Visitation will be held from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva. Funeral services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bethany Lutheran Church in Kaleva; the Rev. Kenneth H. Lein will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Township Cemetery.

      Tracy B. Irish Sr.
      Died April 1, 1999
      WILLIAMSBURG - Tracy B. Irish, 75, of Williamsburg, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A lifelong resident of Williamsburg, Tracy was born May 7, 1923, the son of Frank and Geneva (Samels) Irish. On Jan. 4, 1946, in Williamsburg, he married Ruth P. Parrish.
      Tracy was a machinist and worked at Northern Auto Parts for 22 years, retiring in 1987. He returned to work in 1988 for Thirlby Automotive.
      Tracy was a member of the American Legion Deal Ridgeway Post No. 289 and the Veterans of Foreign Wars Williamsburg/Elk Rapids Post. He served as the fire chief of Williamsburg for 10 years, and was in that position during the gas eruption in April of 1973. He enjoyed being outdoors and tinkering with old cars and tractors.
      Survivors include two children, Tracy B. Irish Jr. of Williamsburg and Tony (Betty) Irish of Williamsburg; two sisters, Donna Conant of Throw, N.M., and Polly (Ralph) Egler of Ludington. Also surviving are several grandchildren, nieces, and nephews.
      Tracy was preceded in death by his wife, Ruth, and one brother, Harley.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Gary Pedersen will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

      Martin O. Killian
      Died April 2, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Martin O. Killian, 85, of Traverse City, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 9, 1913, in Del Ray, he was the son of Martin O. and Emma Killian. In 1983, in Traverse City, he married Emily Hart.
      A retired cost estimate supervisor, Martin earned his tool and die degree as an apprentice at Ford Motor Co. He spent several years in Germany for the company and, after 35 years of employment, retired in 1974. He moved to Traverse City and ran the Service Corps of Retired Executives office in Traverse City from 1975 to 1985. In 1996 he established and financed the Killian estimating course at Eastern Michigan University for undergraduate and graduate students. In 1997 he established the Martin O. Killian endowed scholarship for the benefit of students at EMU. Martin was an avid reader and traveler.
      Survivors include his wife, Emily, of Traverse City; a daughter, Katherine Nieman; two granddaughters, Jennifer and Jessica of Bellville; and 16 nieces and nephews.
      Martin was preceded in death by his first wife, Adelaide, in 1975, and six brothers and sisters.
      Private family services will be held.
      Memorial contributions may be made to a hospice of one's choice.

      Peter H. DeCamp
      Died April 4, 1999
      SUTTONS BAY - Peter H. DeCamp, 72, of Suttons Bay, died Sunday.
      Born Nov. 27, 1926, in Flint, he was the son of John S. and Edna (Stacy) DeCamp. On Sept. 20, 1952, he married Romaine Frantz.
      Peter graduated from The Taft School in 1945 and from Yale University in 1948. He served in the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers from 1950 to 1952. He joined the Michigan Department of Transportation as a civil engineer in 1954 and retired as a senior district engineer in 1984. Peter served as the Leelanau County drain commissioner from 1987 to 1992. He was a member of the Suttons Bay Rotary from 1985 to 1991 and was an active member of the Maritime Heritage Alliance and Suttons Bay Congregational Church.
      Survivors include his wife; two sons, Peter H. DeCamp Jr. of Chicago and William F. DeCamp (Pauline Malik) of Williston, Vt.; a sister, Deborah D. Nagy of Honolulu; a granddaughter, Rebecca M. DeCamp; and many, much loved nieces and nephews.
      Peter was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, John S. DeCamp Jr. and Stacey DeCamp.
      Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, April 17, at Suttons Bay Congregational Church; the Rev. James Beadle will officiate.

      Mary Ann Dezelski
      Died April 4, 1999
      CEDAR - Mary Ann Dezelski, 60, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Dec. 6, 1938, in Cedar, she was the daughter of John Jack and Matilda (Popa) Laskey. On Oct. 21, 1961, in Isadore, she married Robert J. Dezelski.
      A homemaker, Mary was a member of Holy Rosary Church in Isadore, where she sang in the choir and for many years was the head of the church liturgy. She was also a member of Cedar Extension Club. Mary loved birds and all animals, especially her many grand cats and dogs.
      Survivors include her husband; four children, Cheryl Ann (Russ) Lee of California, Danette Dezelski and her fianc‚, Mark Stover, of Traverse City, Robert J. (Karen) Dezelski of Maple City, and Brian Lee Dezelski and his fianc‚e, Tanya Abbey, of Traverse City; two sisters, Martha (Joseph) Czerniak of Cedar and Jacquelyn (Edward) Budd of Cedar; a brother, John "Buba" (Delberta) Laskey of Traverse City; and two grandchildren.
      Mary was preceded in death by her parents.

      John Corwin 'Bud' Fisher
      Died April 4, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - John Corwin "Bud" Fisher, 83, of Elk Rapids, died Sunday.
      Bud was born Sept. 2, 1915, in Richmond, Ind. He was the son of Edgar Andrew and Florence Corwin Fisher. On Sept. 9, 1939, in Phillipsburg, Ohio, he married Bonnie Graham Fisher.
      As a small child, he spent a few years in Providence, R.I. and then grew up in Dayton, Ohio. After graduating from Dayton's Steele High School in 1932, he worked as a mail boy at the Frigidaire Division of General Motors. He entered Earlham College in 1933 and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree in economics. While at Earlham, he played tackle on the football team. After college he was employed by the IBM Corp. where he remained until 1942 when he went to work at the Buick Motor Division of General Motors Corp. He worked at Buick in a variety of data processing capacities and retired in 1976 as assistant general production manager. After retirement, he and his wife moved to Elk Rapids.
      Bud served as a member of the Holly Area School Corporation Board of Trustees in the 1950s and 1960s. He was a member of the Elk Rapids Golf Club where he served as secretary. He was also a member of the Earlham College "E" Club and a member of its alumni association. Bud was also a member of the Ortonville Rotary Club.
      Bud was very devoted to his family. He and Bonnie had six children of whom five survive. They are sons, Thomas G. (Barbara) Fisher of Indianapolis, Joseph C. Fisher of Elk Rapids, John W. (Susan) Fisher of Canton; and daughters, Jane Martin of Rockwood and Betsy Witte of Franklin, Tenn. Also surviving are a sister, Juliet Kidney; several nieces and nephews; 12 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
      Bud was preceded in death by his parents; a son, John Edgar Fisher; and a sister, Barbra Circle.
      Cremation has taken place. Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at First Presbyterian Church; the Rev. Daniel Herlein will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.

      Madelyn F. Lighthiser
      Died April 4, 1999
      MECOSTA - Madelyn F. Lighthiser, 74, of Mecosta, died Sunday at her home.
      Born Dec. 6, 1924, in Hannah, she was the daughter of Charles and Frances (Tarchinski) Schmuckal. In 1985, in Remus, she married Max Lighthiser.
      Madelyn lived in Traverse City for most of her life and graduated from St. Francis High School. A secretary/receptionist, she had been employed by WCCW for several years and also worked for Burwood Products Co. for many years.
      A resident of Mecosta for the last 15 years, Madelyn enjoyed fishing in that area and won an award for bass fishing. She was very active with the Mecosta County senior citizens group. An avid euchre player, she coordinated euchre for the Mecosta County Senior Citizen Center. She was a member of St. Michaels Catholic Church in Remus.
      Survivors include four brothers, Armond (Eleanor) Schmuckal of Hannah, Elmer (Rose) Schmuckal of Grawn, Ralph Schmuckal of Saline, and Arthur Schmuckal of Traverse City; two stepchildren, Ronald P. Lighthiser of Sioux Center, Iowa and Cynthia Peterson of Marquette; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Madelyn was preceded in death by her husband, Max; a son, Ralph Vonderhoff, who was killed in Vietnam on Aug. 28, 1970; her parents; a brother, John; and a sister, Mary Rhodes.
      Visitation will be held from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; Father James Gardiner will officiate. Cremation will take place and burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

      C. Helen Perkett
      Died April 3, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - C. Helen Perkett, 85, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A lifelong resident of Traverse City, she was born Nov. 30, 1913, the daughter of Clyde and Georgena (McKay) Walker. Helen graduated from Traverse City High School and attended County Normal. She was active in the community and worked with a wide variety of organizations including the Girl Scouts, Camp Roy-El, Vasa and the Munson Medical Center Auxiliary. Helen was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City and the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. She was also involved in international exchange groups and youth programs. An expert at needlepoint and needlework, she also enjoyed golf, cross-country skiing and traveling.
      Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Perkett of Nashville, Tenn., and Sara Perkett of Ashland, Mass.; two grandchildren, Brenda Tanis of Boston, Mass., and David Tanis of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Riker of Grand Ledge and Winterhaven, Fla., and Margaret "Peggy" Spencer of Williamsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, in 1997; and two brothers, Hugh V. Walker and Col. George L. Walker.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church; the Rev. James Hayden will officiate. After cremation, burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.

      Daniel A. 'Danny' Willey
      Died March 28, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Daniel A. "Danny" Willey, a native of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, March 28, in Big Spring, Texas, where he had resided for the last 20 years.
      Danny attended Traverse Heights Grade School and Traverse City High School. Having been a seaman on the Great Lakes, Danny never forgot his Traverse City roots.
      Danny is survived by two sons, Scott and Stacey; two sisters, Doris Crawford of Scotsdale, Ariz., and Daisey Laskiewicz of Westerville, Ohio; four brothers, Devere, David, John, and Andy Willey - all of the Grand Traverse area; and many other loving family members and friends.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Donald and Engene Willey of Traverse City, and his brother, Donald J. Willey, who also lived in Big Spring.
      Danny is being returned to Traverse City for burial in Oakwood Cemetery.
      A service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Park Church on Fair Street in Traverse City. A luncheon will follow the service. All persons wishing to pay their respects are encouraged to attend.
     
      JUDY ANN CRANDELL, 47, of Kalkaska, died Monday, April 5, 1999, at Tendercare of Gaylord. Judy was born on July 1, 1951, in Grand Rapids.

      DR. MILTON IRVING JONES, 94, a retired osteopathic doctor of Benzonia, died Monday morning, April 5, 1999, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital long term care unit in Frankfort.

      Agnes Louise Copeland
      Died April 6,1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Agnes Louise Copeland, 88, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 20, 1911, in Elk Rapids, she was the daughter of Amos and Agnes (McGuire) Copeland.
      Louise lived most of her adult life in Traverse City. She was a retired nurse's aid, and was employed 25 years at the state hospital in Traverse City.
      Survivors include a sister, Marie (Peter) Brelowski of Niles; and several nieces and nephews.
      Louise was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Ada Donner.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. The Rev. Paul Megge will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

      Herbert E. Curry
      Died March 19,1999
      SUTTONS BAY - Herbert E. Curry, 80, of Sea Level, N.C., formerly of Suttons Bay, died March 19, 1999, in Sea Level.
      Born Feb. 4, 1919, in Bingham, he was the son of Andrew and Amelia (Schultz) Curry. He was the oldest of three children.
      Upon completing school, Herbert worked on the car ferry in Ludington until March of 1942 when he joined the Army. As a World War ll veteran, he was honorably discharged in January of 1946. Herbert returned to Michigan, working as a prison guard in Jackson, as an orderly at the Henry Ford Hospital, and as an auto plant worker. He then returned to work as an able seaman on the ore carriers. On Jan. 1, 1949, he began his life's career as an able seaman unlimited for ESSO.
      In 1960, Herbert married Ruth Shumsky and became stepfather to her daughter, Judith. To their marriage two children were born: a son, Dale and a daughter, Gail Lynn.
      Herbert retired from Exxon in March 1971 after 22 years of service. A year later, he began working for the village of Suttons Bay as a maintenance man. He retired from that job in January of 1984. Upon final retirement and for health reasons, Herb moved to North Carolina in November of 1984. He then called home "The Sailors' Snug Harbor" of Sea Level, which is the nation's only retirement home exclusive to merchant mariners.
      Herb enjoyed 14 years as a member of their community and made many friends. He will be missed by many and is remembered as an amiable, gentle man, who always had a smile and a kind word.
      His hobbies were reading, doing crosswords, and dining out. He was a fan of Chicago Cubs baseball. His interests included current and historical events, and he loved to reminisce with family and friends. He was fond of animals, particularly the family cats. He enjoyed ships and locomotives and could be found reading their magazines or watching videos on them.
      Herbert was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Ruth, who passed away Feb. 25, 1978.
      Survivors include his children, son, Dale 0. Curry of Traverse City, daughter, Gail L. "Punkin" Curry of Traverse City, and stepdaughter, Judy (Gerard) Stallman of Suttons Bay; grandsons Ryan and Paul Stallman of Suttons Bay, a sister, Helen Dean of Iron Mountain; a brother, Ralph Curry, who resides at the Curry Family farm in Suttons Bay; and many nieces and nephews.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. The Rev. Wayne Dziekan will officiate. Interment will follow at the St. Michael's Cemetery, Suttons Bay.

      Waldon Edward 'Walt' DeRosha
      Died April 5,1999
      MANTON - Waldon Edward "Walt" DeRosha, 77, of Manton, died Monday, day at home, surrounded by his family, following a brief illness.
      Born Feb. 3, 1922, in Greenville, he was the son of Edward and Blanche (Mattison) DeRosha. On Dec. 17, 1949, in Portland, Mich., he married the former Waunettea Jeffers.
      Walt graduated from Manton High School in 1941. He was a veteran of World War II, and served in the U.S. Army in the Aleutian Islands. He was a 12 year employee of B.F. Goodrich and a 22 year employee of Cadillac Rubber and Plastics, retiring in 1984. He was a member of St. Theresa's Catholic Church of Manton. He enjoyed fishing, oil painting and spending time with his family.
      Survivors include his wife, Waunettea; one daughter, Thea (Alan) Frier of Cadillac; two sons, Edward (Marilyn) DeRosha of Elk Rapids, and Glen (Brenda) DeRosha of Traverse City; one sister, Joyce (Bob) Nye of Manistee, one brother, Arlo (Donna) DeRosha of Manton; seven grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, and a sister, Pearl Kieffer.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton. Funeral services will be held at St. Theresa's Catholic Church in Manton at 11 a.m. Thursday, with Father Michael Conner officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood Township Cemetery.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of Wexford-Missaukee.
     
      Judith Roseann McSawby
      Died April 6, 1999
      SUTTONS BAY - Judith Roseann McSawby, 56, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday at her home.
      Born April 2, 1943, in Suttons Bay, she was the daughter of David and Viola (Waukazoo) Bailey. On Dec. 19, 1963, in Grand Rapids, she married Homer Anthony McSawby.
      Judith was a member of Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church in Peshawbestown. A homemaker, she enjoyed writing poems, art, music and cooking.
      Survivors include six children, Richard Lee (Deborah) McSawby, Jolanda Ann (James) Murphy, Sharon Renee McSawby, Deborah Waggener, Suzanne Marie McSawby, and Brenda McSawby; four sisters, Peggy Handley, Rita Bailey, Sandra Waukazoo, and Dorie Waukazoo; two brothers, Ron Burgess, and Bill Burgess; and nine grandchildren.
      Judith was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and her brother, Larry Burgess.
      Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. A wake service will be held 7:30 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at Kateri Tekakwitha Catholic Church. The Rev. Andrew G. Buvala and the Rev. James Gardiner will officiate. Burial will be at the church cemetery.

      Elton 'Al' F. Olszewski
      Died April 5, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Elton "Al" F. Olszewski, 66, of Traverse City, died Monday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City after an extended illness.
      Born June 4, 1932, he was the son of Felix and Dolly Olszewski of Hannah.
      After graduating from St., Mary's High School of Hannah in 1950, he continued farming and attended Michigan State University agricultural courses. He worked in road construction for several years. He then went to work at the truck and coach division of General Motors Corporation in Pontiac, as a millwright. He retired from GM in 1990. While working in Pontiac, he was very active in the United Way and the Eagles. He was a member of St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield Hills. After he retired, he relocated to the Traverse City area and was again a member of St. Mary's Church in Hannah. He became very active with the church and involved in St. Mary's Cemetery Association.
      No one was ever a stranger to Elton. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed by family and friends.
      Elton is survived by one sister, Elizabeth "Bette" L. Valade of Buckley; two favorite aunts, Lucille M. Luhrs of Traverse City, and Sophia Heslop of Centerline; and many, many cousins.
      Elton was preceded in death by his parents.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. A wake service will be held at 7:30 p.m. today at the funeral home. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Mary's of Hannah Church, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.

      C. Helen Perkett
      Died April 3, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - C. Helen Perkett, 85, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A lifelong resident of Traverse City, she was born Nov. 30, 1913, the daughter of Clyde and Georgena (McKay) Walker. Helen graduated from Traverse City High School and attended County Normal. She was active in the community and worked with a wide variety of organizations including the Girl Scouts, Camp Roy-EI, Vasa and the Munson Medical Center Auxiliary. Helen was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City and the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. She was also involved in international exchange groups and youth programs. An expert at needlepoint and needlework, she also enjoyed golf, cross-country skiing and traveling.
      Surviving are two daughters, Dr. Elizabeth Perkett of Nashville, Tenn., and Sara Perkett of Ashland, Mass.; two grandchildren, Brenda Tanis of Boston, Mass., and David Tanis of Melbourne, Fla.; two sisters, Mary Riker of Grand Ledge and Winterhaven, Fla., and Margaret "Peggy" Spencer of Williamsburg; and numerous nieces and nephews.
      Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Edward, in 1997; and two brothers, Hugh V. Walker and Col. George L. Walker.
      A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. today at Immaculate Conception Church; the Rev. James Hayden will officiate. After cremation, burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association, the Arthritis Foundation, or the charity of one's choice.

      Dr. Milton Irving Jones
      Died April 5, 1999
      BENZONIA - Dr. Milton Irving Jones, 94, of Benzonia, formerly of Chicago, died early Monday morning at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Unit in Frankfort.
      Born Oct. 25, 1904, in Benzonia, he was the son of Irving Park and Susan (Remington) Jones. On Dec. 25, 1931, he was united in marriage to Melba Bonfonte.
      Dr. Jones had been a permanent resident of Benzie County since 1974. He attended Kirksville College of Osteopathy in Missouri and practiced as an osteopathic physician in Chicago for many years before retiring to Benzonia. He was a member of the First Congregational Church in Benzonia and the Osteopathic Guild. He was very active with the Friends of the Benzonia Library, and had volunteered at the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital-Long Term Care Unit and The Maples, playing musical duets with former Benzie County resident Jim Young.
      Dr. Jones is survived by two sons, Irving Jones of Washington, and Richard Jones of Dallas; a daughter, Barbara Bartlett of Hamilton, N.Y.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mildred Huppert of Benzonia.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Melba, in 1983; and a brother, George Jones.
      No visitation services are planned. A private burial will take place at the Benzonia Township Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Mildred Atherton Menmuir, 94, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
      Born at her grandparents' home in Hallowell, Maine, on Nov. 30, 1904, she was the daughter of Herbert E. and Marion (Wescott) Atherton of Taunton, Mass.
      Mrs. Menmuir was a 1925 graduate of Boston University. On Oct. 7, 1933, she married former Taverse City attorney, Charles Menmuir, and moved to Traverse City, where she was a devoted wife and mother. Her interests included gardening; needlepoint; the old Ahgosa Dance Club; a drama club; Traverse City Women's Club; and the Lawyers' Wives. She was a former volunteer for the Traverse City Symphony and Munson Medical Auxiliary, as well as a member of the first Practical Nurses Advisory Board at Northwestern Michigan College in Traverse City.
      Survivors include one daughter, Ann (James) Beuerle of Suttons Bay; a son-in-law, Gerald P. Coffey of Lyndhurst, Ohio, and five grandchildren, Charles (Cynthia) Coffee of Lyndhurst, Cynthia (Kevin) Patterson of Columbus, Ohio, James Beuerle of Beaverton, Ore., Stephen Beuerle of SanDiego, Calif.; and Mark Beuerle of Dearborn Heights.
      Mrs. Menmuir was preceded in death by her husband, Charles H., in 1987, and her daughter, Jean Coffey, in 1997.
      Services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where friends may call from 10 a.m. until the service time. The Rev. James C. Bendig will officiate. Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

      Robert C. Stradinger
      Died April 7, 1999
      MANCELONA - Robert C. Stradinger, 82, died Wednesday at his home in Mancelona.
      Born June 8, 1916, in Mancelona, he was the son of Jacob and Mary (Grulich) Stradinger. Robert grew up in Mancelona and graduated from Mancelona High School in 1935. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. On April 19,1958, in Mancelona, he married Ilene Grody.
      Robert worked for Gulf & Western from 1947 to 1981. He was a life member of the Disabled American Veterans; 56 year member of the American Legion Post #264 in Mancelona; Life member of St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona; Knights of Columbus; 20 year member of the Mancelona Moose Lodge; and 40 year member of the Alba Sportsman Club. He was a 25 year member of the Liar's Club and was "King Liar" for many years. Robert served 18 years on the Mancelona Village Council and five years as Mancelona Village President. He served 25 years at the Mancelona Senior Center. He also served Mancelona as a volunteer fireman for 65 years. He retired in 1996, and at the time of his retirement he was the oldest active fireman in Michigan. He also enjoyed deer hunting.
      He was a loving husband, father and grandfather. He was "Uncle Bob" to everybody.
      Survivors include his wife, Ilene Stradinger of Mancelona; four children, William (Lola) Stradinger of Duran and Ruskin, Fla., Robert C. "George" (Deborah) Stradinger, II of Columbiaville, Patricia Snow of Williamston, and William Fraley of Midland; 14 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; one son, Jacob Stradinger; three sisters, Theresa, Mary Ann, and Margaret; and six brothers, Fred, Johnny, Adolph, Leonard "Pete," Harold "Dutch," and Vernie.
      The family will receive friends from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday evening at the funeral home. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona. Father Dale Magoon will officiate. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.

      PINELLAS PARK, Fla. - Glenn P. Evans, 88, of Pinellas Park, died March 31, 1999, at Rosedale Manor in St. Petersburg, Fla.
      Born in Pinconning, Glenn lived in Iron Mountain before moving to Florida in 1975. He was a driver and worked for F.J. Boutell Driveaway of Flint. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge in Elk Rapids.
      Survivors include his wife of 40 years, Frances M.; one son, Hubert of McCoy, Fla.; one stepson, Gregory Wonch of South Boardman; one stepdaughter, Nancy Wonch of Lansing; seven grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

      Joseph A 'Joe' Imhof
      Died April 8, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph A. 'Joe' Imhof, 85, of Traverse City, died Thursday at home.
      Born Sept. 16, 1913, in Toledo, Ohio, Joe was the son of Frank A. and Julia (Cryan) Imhof. He was a retired special agent for the U.S. Treasury Department, and was very proud of his long career with the federal government. An avid sport fan, Joe enjoyed following the St. Francis Gladiators and the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. He was a sailing enthusiast who enjoyed racing and never lost his love for water which he had appreciated since he was a young man. Joe will be fondly remembered for his sense of humor and his great smile.
      Joe was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; Knights of Columbus, Grand Traverse Council #1213; and St. John's Alumni Association of Toledo, Ohio. He was a strong supporter of the Grand Traverse Area Catholics Schools Athletic Association, and was instrumental in the formation of the Gladhander Auction.
      Survivors include his wife, Betty Morris Imhof of Traverse City; daughter, Sharon A. Jennings of Traverse City; son, Joe Imhof Jr. of Port Huron; grandchildren, Jeff Jennings of Fort Smith, Mont. and Traverse City, Julie Jennings, and Jill Jennings, both of Traverse City; several nieces; nephews; great-nieces; and great-nephews.
      Joe was a devoted family man who loved and enjoyed his children, grandchildren and his extended family very much.
      He was preceded in death by his first wife, Rosemary (Zulliger) Imhof; son-in-law, Jim Jennings; and sister, Theresa Randall.

      FRANKFORT - Bonnie S. Classens, 88, longtime resident of Frankfort, died Thursday evening at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Acute Care Unit.
      Born March 26, 1911, in Frankfort, Bonnie was the daughter of Alfred and Bess (Mathieson) Eriksen. When Bonnie was in the second grade, her family moved to Chicago. She then resided in Grand Rapids and Pontiac.
      While residing in Pontiac, she graduated from Pontiac Central High School and then attended business school. Upon graduation from business school, she worked for a time in a drug store. She then went to work for four and a half years in the business office of Michigan Bell Telephone Co. Bonnie also worked for 20 years as an Avon representative and received several Mrs. L.B. Awards for her sales achievements.
      On October 21, 1933, Bonnie was united in marriage to Robert Classens at Grace Lutheran Church in Pontiac. After the couple honeymooned at the Chicago World's Fair, they settled in their home in Frankfort.
      Bonnie was a faithful member of the First Congregational Church of Frankfort and the church choir since 1936. She was also a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary; the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Auxiliary; the Benzie County Medical Care Facility (The Maples) Auxiliary; and the Frankfort Study Club. She was a former member of the Eagles and the Order of the Eastern Star.
      Bonnie loved to travel, and had visited Florida, Texas, California and Hawaii. Many knew that Bonnie loved to dance and enjoyed playing cards, especially pinochle, euchre and hearts. She will be most remembered by her beautiful smile, which greeted every person who saw her.
      Bonnie is survived by three sons, Gary and wife, Val, of Waterford, Robert and wife, Sylvia, of Traverse City, and Leonard and wife, Mary, of Traverse City; six loving granddaughters; three grandsons; six great-grandchildren; one sister, Joyce Furse and husband, Lee, of Flushing; and two sisters-in-law, Audrey Eriksen of Florida, and Mary Alice Classens of Frankfort. Also surviving are many loving nieces, nephews and cousins.
      Bonnie was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1979; son, Paul R. Classens; one stillborn son; and two brothers, Neil and Richard Eriksen.
      Services for Bonnie will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church of Frankfort. Friends may visit with the family one hour prior to the service at the church. The Rev. Dinah Haag and the Rev. Richard Stoddard will co-officiate. Burial will take place next to her husband, Robert, in the Crystal Lake Township - North Cemetery. After the burial service, friends and family are invited back to the church, where the ladies of the church will have prepared a luncheon.

      ARLINGTON, Va.- Joan Tyler Cobb, 47, of Arlington, Va., formerly of Traverse City, died unexpectedly Sunday, April 4, 1999.
      Born April 3, 1952, in Traverse City, she was the beloved daughter of Earl C. and Evelyn (Wright) Tyler. Joan was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Arlington.
      Joan's beloved family survives her and includes her mother, Evelyn (Wright) Tyler of Traverse City; her husband, the Rev. Richard E. Cobb of Arlington; three sons, Christian M. Cobb of Callands, Va., Richard B. Cobb of Arlington, and the Rev. Martin T. Cobb of Bowerston, Ohio; two daughters, Tracy C. Miller of Sterling, Va., and Amy E. Short of Norfolk, Va.; one grandchild, Jonathan Spencer Cobb of Callands; one sister, Elaine T. Renollet of Wilmington, N.C., one brother, Douglas E. Tyler of Kalamazoo; and loving nieces and nephews.
      Joan was preceded in death by her father, Earl C. Tyler.
      The family will receive friends and family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at Asbury United Methodist Church in Traverse City. A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Asbury United Methodist Church.

      Robert L. Hulsebus

      GRANT - Robert L. Hulsebus, 80, of Grant, formerly of Frankfort, died Saturday.
      Bob proudly served his country in the U.S. Navy. He was a member of St. John's Episcopal Church in Fremont; a member and past Master of Rockford Lodge Number 246; F & AM; O.E.S. Number 215; and life member of Veterans of Foreign Wars in Edgerton. For many years he was an international representative for the United Auto Workers union, and the Bob Hulsebus Union Hall in South Haven is named for him.
      Bob is remembered as a hard working man of great integrity who loved his family deeply and was a mentor to his children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren. One of the enjoyments of his life was gardening. He wore the biggest smile on his face while he rode his John Deere tractor.
      He was a great husband to his wife, the former Ellen Provonche, whom he married September 28, 1940.
      Survivors include his wife, Ellen; his children, Robert L. Hulsebus Jr. of Rockford, Pierre and Marsha Hulsebus, and Jon Larry and Patricia Hulsebus, all of Grandville, and Nancy and Tim Gleason of Rockford; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; brothers and sister, Jim and Dee Hulsebus of Kentwood, Alan and Joan Hulsebus of Cedar Rapids, Iowa, and Rose Ellen Rybski of Grant; brothers-in-law, Homer and Betty Lou Provonche of Grandville and Richard Provonche of Twin Lake; and nieces and nephews.
      Bob was preceded in death by his son, David, in 1972, his great-grandson, Roland, and his daughter-in-law, Myrna.
      Relatives and friends may help celebrate Bob's life with his family from 7 to 9 p.m. on Monday and from 2 to 4 p.m and 7 to 9 p.m. at Pederson Funeral Home In Rockford.       John V. Alfonso
      Died April 9, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY- John V. Alfonso, 66, of Traverse City, traded his pilots wings for angels wings on Friday.
      Born April 10, 1932, in Ionia, he was the son of Vito and Costanza (Chiementi) Alfonso.
      After serving his country in the Korean War, John met his lifetime co-pilot, Marjorie Gilbo, and they were married May 1, 1954, in Grand Rapids.
      In 1963, the Alfonso family relocated to Traverse City where John was employed by the Parsons Corp. In 1966, he and his brother, Frank, established Grand Traverse Machine Co. Through the years, John's entrepreneurial spirit led him to create several small local businesses as well.
      A passionate aviator, John found great joy in piloting his own plane. He also enjoyed building and flying remote-control airplanes and was an integral member of T.R.A.M.P.S. Though that association, he touched the lives of many aspiring pilots and developed treasured friendships.
      Survivors include John's wife, Marjorie; a son, Michael (Kay) Alfonso of Traverse City; three daughters, Carol (Steven) Nickerson of Kingsley, Margianne (John) Chandler of Traverse City, and Bonnie Alfonso of Traverse City; a brother, Frank (Alice) Alfonso of Traverse City; a sister, Nena (Rocco) Dituri of Farmingdale, N.Y.; six grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and beloved cousins.
      John was preceded in death by a daughter, Mary Alfonso, in 1988, and by his parents.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. A funeral service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; the Rev. William Lipscomb will officiate. Burial will take place in Ogdensburg Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Marie M. Bergstrom, 82, of Flint, formerly of Traverse City, died Friday at Genesys Regional Medical Center in Grand Blanc.
      Survivors include two children, Tommy (Sharon) Bergstrom of Spokane, Wash., and Anna Bergstrom of Flint; a sister, Virginia Elsenheimer of Traverse City; four grandchildren; one great-grandchild; and several nieces and nephews.

      COPEMISH - Genevieve Irwin Doberstein Casselman, 85, of Copemish, died Thursday, Dec. 31, 1998, at her residence. She was born Aug. 30, 1913, in Copemish, the daughter of Jay and Blanche (Stiver) Irwin.

      Helen C. Huszar
      Died March 21, 1999
      SAN DIEGO - Helen Huszar, 68, of San Diego, formerly of Traverse City, Mich., died Sunday, March 21, at Vencor Hospital in San Diego after a short illness.
      Born April 19, 1930, in Manistique, Mich., Helen was the daughter of Grant and Lucille (Oler) Pyke. She worked at Lantz Variety Store and Milliken's in Traverse City before moving to California in the late 1950s where she resided until her death.
      Helen enjoyed being with her family and had a talent for sewing and crocheting. In previous years she had made many beautiful items for family and friends, including baby items for the Tot to Teens store in Traverse City. She crocheted many items for the Navy relief effort, and received many awards for her efforts. Helen retired from Sears in 1992, after 25 years of service. She enjoyed her family, traveling and gardening.
      Survivors include her husband, Martin (Skip) Huszar; three daughters, Starr (Dick) Woolfolk of Sacramento, and Krystal Masumoto and Dawn (Bill) Gisldorf - both of San Diego; grandchildren, Diann Flynn, Kimberley Terrill, and Tiffany Dow - all of Sacramento, and Michael and Brian Masumoto, Steve Huszar, Justin and Shane Gilsdorf - all of the San Diego area; and her sister, Kitty (Dick) Braden, of Traverse City.
      Helen was preceded in death by her parents.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Glen Abbey Memorial Park, 3838 Bonita Road in Bonita.

      Richard 'Rig' Churchill
      Died April 11, 1999
      ARCADIA - Richard "Rig" Churchill, formerly of Lapeer and Mount Morris, and a resident of Arcadia for the past nine years, died Sunday morning at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City at the age of 72.
      Richard was born May 31, 1926, in Flint, the son of John Charles and Helen Irene (Shurlow) Churchill. On Sept. 27, 1947, he was united in marriage to Mary Ann Freeman.
      Richard had served the country honorably in the U. S. Army during the World War II era. He was a partner in the Freeman Pontiac Automotive Dealership in Mount Morris. Richard was a very avid hunter, fisherman and professional gunsmith and an accomplished woodcarver. He enjoyed sailing and gardening, but what gave him the most enjoyment was doing things for and taking care of others.
      Richard is survived by his wife, Mary Ann; two sons, Robert D. (Lou Ann) Churchill and David E. Churchill; a daughter, Susan (John) Rushworth; and two sisters, Beverly Storey and Phyllis Martin. Also surviving are his granddaughters, Jennifer and Anna Rushworth, and stepgrandchildren, Kelly and John Wold.
      No visitation is planned. Services for Richard will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Arcadia United Methodist Church. Pastor Art Murphy will officiate.

      William H. 'Gil' Gilardy
      Died April 8, 1999
      GAYLORD - William H. "Gil" Gilardy, 77, of Gaylord, died Thursday in Florida.
      Born in Detroit on Aug. 12, 1921, he lived there for many years before moving to Gaylord. An alumnus of the University of Michigan, he was an independent representative for business machines and printing. During World War II, Gil was a colonel in the U.S. Air Force and served in the Pacific. He was an active member of the Gaylord Elks and a member of the Fraternal Order of Eagles, the Veterans of Foreign Wars, Hidden Valley/Otsego Ski Club, St., Mary's Cathedral Parish, and the Detroit Athletic Club. He was a charter member of the Birmingham Athletic Club. Gil loved his family, the theater, skiing, and playing bridge and poker.
      Survivors include his children, William H. Gilardy Jr. of Honolulu, Pamela G. Madden of Gaylord, Mary Ellen Lanouette of Detroit, Anne G. Driver of Gaylord, and Dr. Amy G. Andrews of Rochester, Minn.; and his grandchildren, William O. Madden, Shannon K. Madden, Heather M. Lanouette, Todd D. Gilardy, Ryan C. Gilardy, Drew W. Driver, Brittany B. Gilardy, Brie A. Driver, Kip J. Driver, Patrick C. Andrews, and Brendan J. Andrews.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. today at the Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord with an Elks Lodge memorial service at 7 p.m. and a VFW service at 7:30 p.m.
      Visitation will also be held from 10 a.m. until the 11 a.m. funeral service Wednesday at St. Mary's Cathedral in Gaylord.

      Dr. Robert F. Steadman
      Died April 8, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Dr. Robert F. Steadman, political scientist, a noted educator and public servant, died Thursday, at the age of 94, at his home in Traverse City.
      Born in Hurley, S.D., on May 31, 1904, he was the son of Robert Anthony Steadman and Florence Ella Steadman. He entered Dakota Wesleyan at the age of 15 and graduated summa cum laude at 19. He married Calista Anne Lewis soon after graduation and completed his doctorate in political science at Chicago University in 1929 while teaching full time in the public schools.
      He served as a professor at Syracuse University's Maxwell Graduate School of Citizenship from 1929 to 1947 and was renowned as a debater and teacher. During most of his tenure at Syracuse, he and Calista lived in Marcellus, N.Y., where he was head of the local Democratic Party and very active in Onondaga County politics. In 1947, he taught at Wayne State University in Detroit for a year before serving as Michigan controller as head of Michigan's Department of Administration for Governor G. Mennen Williams from 1948 to 1956.
      In 1957, he became economic advisor to the American Management Association, serving until 1960 when he became economic advisor to United States Secretary of Defense Robert McNamara and the Department of Defense through 1963. He spent his time with the Department of Defense working on the difficult (but successful) task of minimizing the economic impact of the closing of military bases in the United States. In 1964, he became director for Improvement of Management in Government for the Committee for Economic Development in Washington D.C., where he served until his retirement in 1974. While with CED, he edited/authored a number of published treatises on improvement of management in government which still stand as the premier analyses of the problems discussed. At various times in his busy career, he served Presidents Roosevelt, Truman and Kennedy on special assignments in Washington D.C., and abroad.
      His was a full life successfully dedicated to his wife and family, to the advancement of his cherished ideals in education and public service, and to a lifelong passion for Democratic politics.
      His beloved wife, Calista, preceded him in death on Feb. 18, 1985.
      He and Calista are survived by all their children, Lewis, Robert, Calista, James and Richard, along with 16 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
      A memorial service is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, June 26, at St. John's Episcopal Church in Marcellus.
      Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

      RITA L. BIELSKI, 74, of Manistee, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

      VYRONA L. LAMBERT, 86, of Rapid City, died Monday, April 12, 1999, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. Vyrona was born June 3, 1912.

      KYLE JAMES PTAK, 18 day old infant son of James and Lisa Ptak, died Sunday, April 11, 1999, in Clare. He was born March 24, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

      Madonna A. (Bodrie) Donathan
      Died April 12, 1999
      FIFE LAKE - Madonna A. (Bodrie) Donathan, 79, of Fife Lake, died Monday, April 12, at the Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      Born in Pinconning on June 27, 1919, she was the daughter of Fred and Adeline (Deshaw) Bodrie. On Nov. 13, 1937, in Hannah, she married William Donathan.
      Mrs. Donathan resided in River Rouge until 1974, when she moved to Fife Lake. She was a member of St. Aloysius Catholic Church and the Altar Society. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother who enjoyed her family, cooking and reading.
      Surviving are three sons, William (Barbara) Donathan Jr. of River Rouge, Christopher (Renee) Donathan of Sterling Heights, and Daniel (Teresa) Donathan of Kalkaska; six daughters, Ann Franklin of Columbus, Ohio, Marilyn (Raymond) Hamel of Little Lake, Kathleen (Daniel) Hayden of Troy, Martha (Steve) Burke of River Rouge, Elizabeth (Jerry) Cannon of Fife Lake, and Jane (John) Babrick of South Boardman; three sisters, Alice Donathan of Fife Lake, Nelda Laginess of Southgate, and Marcella Hatley of Mancelona; 39 grandchildren and 24 great-grandchildren.
      Madonna was preceded in death by her husband, William, on May 17, 1998; a daughter, Mary; a son-in-law, Everette Franklin; two grandchildren, Mark Hamel and Everette L. Franklin; eight brothers; and three sisters.
      A rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska where friends may call from 1 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Aloysius Catholic Church in Fife Lake. Father Walter Derylo will officiate. Burial will be in St. Aloysius Cemetery.

      BILLINGS, Mont. - George Lee (Gus) Nesbitt, 42, a sales representative, passed away at his home on Thursday, April 8.
      George was born Nov. 23, 1956. After completing his high school education in 1975, he served in the U.S. Navy. On Sept. 1, 1984, in Greeley, Colo., he married Ronda Murphy.
      George was active in his church and with his children.
      Survivors include his wife, Ronda; three children, Brittni Rachel, Leevi Daniel, and Tyler Donald who are at home; two sisters, Debbie Nesbitt of St. Petersburg, Fla., and Ellen (Jack) McClure of Hudson, Fla.; two brothers, Tim (Lora) Nesbitt of Traverse City, and Mark Nesbitt of St. Petersburg; his parents, George (June) Nesbitt of Traverse City and Joanna (Herbert) Scharke of St. Petersburg; and several nieces and nephews.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the New Beginnings Ministry Center in Billings.
     
      Virginia Kathryn Speer
      Died April 11, 1999
      GRAWN - Virginia Kathryn Speer, 49, of Grawn, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born July 25, 1949, in Holland, she was the daughter of Russell Albert Oskaboose and Mabel Katherine (White Pigeon) Perkins.
      A supervisor at Grand Beach Hotel, Virginia did service work at Phoenix Hall in Traverse City. She had previously worked at Sara Lee and United Technologies. She loved art, crocheting, bowling, playing softball and bingo. Virginia loved family gatherings and being with family during the holidays. She was very creative with her hands.
      Survivors include her four children, Jeffory Lynn Speer of Grawn, Douglas Michael (Jonay) Speer of Kalamazoo, Denise Leah Speer of Suttons Bay, and Stacey Katherine Speer of Grawn; five sisters, Cheryl Lynn Oskaboose of Traverse City, Delores Clara Oskaboose of Suttons Bay, Mary Ann Antoine of Suttons Bay, Debra Jean Case of Buckley, and Joni Lynn Perkins of Traverse City; three brothers, Gary Allen Oskaboose of Grawn, Scott Anthony (Gail) Perkins of Grawn, and William Ray (Jessica) Oskaboose of Monroe; a cousin that was like a brother, Jerome Gene (Butch) White Pigeon of Mount Pleasant; four grandchildren, Kathryn Mabel Speer, Corissa Speer, Stephen Dale McClellan, and Kylie Kathryn Stokes; one aunt, Virginia White Pigeon of Mount Pleasant; three uncles, Calvin White Pigeon of Lansing, Edward White Pigeon of Lansing, and Howard White Pigeon of Kalamazoo; seven nieces, 11 nephews; six great-nieces; and five great-nephews.
      Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Michael Peter; and grandparents, William and Clara White Pigeon.
      Visitation will be from 4 to 6 p.m. today at the Traverse City chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Riverside Cemetery in Hamilton.

      Died April 13, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Elizabeth "Betz" A. Grundel, 65, of Elk Rapids, died Tuesday at home.
      Born June 23, 1933, in Alden, she was the daughter of John Jay and Elizabeth (Foley) Converse. On Oct. 14, 1972, in Elk Rapids, she married Don W. Grundel.
      Elizabeth had lived in Elk Rapids for the past 10 years. She had worked at R. L. Polk intermittently from the 1960s until 1980, as well as working at other local businesses. She was a member of Elk Rapids United Methodist Church. She was an avid crafter, sewing, knitting and crocheting for all of her family. Music and reading were also a joyful part of her life.
      Survivors include her loving husband, Don, also of Elk Rapids; three sons, Rick (Mary) Barnes of Kalkaska, John (Kim) Barnes of Kalkaska; and Dennis (Elaine) Grundel of Rapid City; two daughters, Cheryl Hopkins of Kalkaska and Shawn (Bob) Davis of Big Rapids; one sister, Inez (Bob) Harris of Alden; one brother, Burl Arsnoe of Bellaire; 15 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and many close friends.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and a daughter, Ann Marie Murray in 1980.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Kay Coombs will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      GRAND RAPIDS - Mr. John F. O'Hearn, 71, of Grand Rapids, went to be with his Lord after a courageous battle with cancer. He was surrounded by his loving family.
      Mr. O'Hearn is survived by his wife, Mary; his children, Kathy (Greg) Crowe of Rockford, Jerry O'Hearn of Traverse City, Laurie Constantine of Comstock Park, Julie O'Hearn of Traverse City, Anne (Mark) Yondo of Grand Rapids, and Maureen (Bob) Bundy of Walker; his grandchildren, Matthew and Sarah Crowe, Angie, Charlie, Kevin, John, Katie, and Eric O'Hearn, Nathan and Mary Constantine, Ashley, Jyssica, and Reilly Yondo, and Olivia and Adam Bundy. Also surviving are his brothers and sisters Gerry (Tom) Newby, Tom (Kay) O'Hearn, Terry (Dorothy) O'Hearn, Carol (Frank) Gunckel, Sue (Bob) Makowski, and Steve O'Hearn; several nieces and nephews; and many friends.
      He was preceded in death by his parents, Charlotte and Gerald O'Hearn; his brother and sister-in-law, Eugene and Delores O'Hearn; and his son-in-law, Mickey Constantine.
      Mr. O'Hearn reposes at the Alt & Shawmut Hills Chapel, 2120 Lake Michigan Drive NW, Grand Rapids, where friends and relatives may meet his family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today. The Rosary will be recited at the chapel at 7:30 p.m. today. The funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. James Catholic Church. Interment will be in Resurrection Cemetery.

      INTERLOCHEN - Kyle James Ptak, infant son of James Ladimer Ptak Jr. and Lisa Marie (Miller) Ptak, died Sunday in Clare due to an aortic stenosis.
      Kyle was born March 24, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Kyle is survived by his parents; maternal grandparents, Roberta (Bobbie) Stan Vokoviak of Frankfort; paternal grandparents, James Ptak Sr. and Gloria Ptak of Frankfort; maternal great-grandparents, Myrna and Vic Smith of Clare; paternal great-grandparents, Betty and Duane Miller of Clare; great-grandmother, Marci Herring of Frankfort; aunts and uncles, Kris and Dale Johnson, Lorna and Ken Mathews, Jeff and Rob Vokoviak; great-aunts and great-uncles John and Connie Miller, Gary and Penny Colosky, Mike and Jane Iutzi, Arnold and Suzi Fluette, Ron and Maureen Fluette, Ed and Tina Fluette, Brian Fluette, and Cynthia and Sue Ptak. Also surviving are cousins, Jason and Ryan Mathews.
      Kyle was preceded in death by his brother, Tyler James Ptak, on July 29, 1997.

      Maurice E. 'Stan' Stanwick
      Died April 10, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Maurice E. "Stan" Stanwick, 75, of Traverse City, died Saturday, April 10.
      Born March 3, 1924, in Traverse City, he was the son of Einer and Elsie (Lewis) Stanwick. On June 15, 1946, in Traverse City, he married the love of his life, Yvonne L. Levall.
      A graduate of Traverse City Central High School, he attended Tri-State College. Maurice was a sergeant in the Army 40th Mobile Communications Squadron attached to the third Army serving in Normandy, northern France, and central Europe.
      Maurice was in retail sales for Montgomery Ward's and Tempo. He was a Past Grand Master of the Beta Phi Theta Fraternity, and a member of the American Radio Relay League/Amateur Radio. He used the call letters "K8LYB" on his Ham radio.
      Survivors include his wife, Yvonne; his children, Roger (Laura) Stanwick of Gaylord, and Greg (Nancy) Stanwick of Traverse City; and four grandchildren, Anne, Rebecca, Kimberly, and Christopher.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and a brother, Lewis Stanwick.
      Cremation has taken place. Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery. The Rev. Dean I. Bailey of Central United Methodist Church will officiate.

      Richard Joseph Deering

      NORTHPORT - Richard Joseph Deering, 78, of Northport and Tucson, Ariz., died Wednesday at his home in Tucson.
      Born March 22, 1921, in Empire, he was the son of Mark and Jane (DuFresne) Deering. In April 1942, in Northport, he married Georgia Bartlett.
      Richard served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. He was a retired butcher and cherry grower. Church membership was at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Northport. For more than 50 years, he was a member of the Lions Club. When in Tucson, he was cared for by his granddaughter, Terri K. Almeda.
      Survivors include his children, Richard (Nancy) Deering Jr. of Northport, Susan J. (Jonathan) Wroten of Tucson, Carolyn J. (David) Kilcherman of Northport, and Thomas W. (Jane) Deering of Northport; one sister, Jeanette Cheney of Empire; two brothers, Warren and Mark Deering, both of Empire; 10 grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Georgia, on June, 20, 1980; daughter, Mary Beth, in infancy; two brothers, Thomas and Clifford; and two sisters, Alice Nelson and Velma Richards.
      Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Sunday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, where a vigil service will be held at 7:30 p.m. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Northport.       Lucile Larson
      Died March 19, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Lucile Larson, 92, of Traverse City, died March 19 at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 28, 1906, in Silverwood, Ind., she was the daughter of David A. and Anna Mae (Lindley) Richardson. On Feb. 1, 1931, in LaFayette, Ind., she married Harold E. Larson.
      Lucile was a homemaker who moved to the Traverse City area in 1994 from Yucca Valley, Calif.
      Survivors include one sister, Virginia Loveless of Yucca Valley; six grandchildren, Christine Hohnke, Katerine Larson, David Larson, Cynthia Larson, Patricia Larson, and Timothy Larson; and two great-grandchildren, Jason Larson and Ethan Hohnke.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold, on Dec. 26, 1993; and one son, Jack Dale Larson, on Sept. 10, 1997.
      No services are planned at this time. Burial will be at Beechwood Cemetery.

      Survivors include his beloved wife, Gertrude L. Dort; children, Jesse Edwards (Cindy) Dort Jr. of Gaylord, Shirley Mae (Floyd) Loudermilk of Hendersonville, N.C., and Dale Allen (Mary) Dort of Lake Ann; 11 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

      Mary Louise Draper
      Died April 16, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Louise Draper, 75, of Traverse City, died Friday at home.
      Born October 28, 1923, in Leelanau County, she was the daughter of Onezim and Mary (Plamondon) Lamie. On November 11, 1944, in Spartan, Wis., she married Russell Draper.
      Mary was a resident of this area for all of her life. She worked in the laundry at the state hospital for 18 years. A member of Immaculate Conception Church and Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary, she also operated a foster care home for 18 years. She loved to sew and garden, and she loved her grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      Survivors include her husband, Russell, of Traverse City; two sons, Eugene (Cynthia) Draper of Manistee, and Don (Nancy) Draper of Traverse City; a daughter, Mary Lou Draper of Traverse City; 13 grandchildren; and 26 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; a daughter, Linda Miller; four sisters, Marcelina Gagnon, Cecilia Klinker, Lydia Solem, and Roseabella Witkowski; and four brothers, Fred Lamie, Simon Lamie, Valer Lamie, and Wilbert Lamie.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at Immaculate Conception Church.       Gordon Lossing
      Died April 14, 1999
      MIDLAND - Gordon Lossing, 85, of Midland, died Wednesday, April 14, at his home in Midland after a brief illness.
      Born March 14, 1914, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, he was the son of Milford and Blanche (Sheldon) Lossing. He received his education in the Kalkaska school system, where he was an honor student and class valedictorian. As a young man, he moved to Midland where he married Winona Grace MacDonald on June 22, 1937.
      Gordon was a longtime employee of the Dow Chemical Company. He retired as a supervisor of management training after several overseas assignments. He served the March of Dimes program for many years and was the Midland County chairman several times. He was an avid reader, loved to fish and enjoyed nature and travel. He was a member of the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland, where he served as an elder. His many friends will remember his devotion to his family, his sense of humor, and his willingness to help others.
      Survivors include his three children, Lawrence G. Lossing of San Francisco, Carole Ann Lossing (Laurence) Rangecroft of Newcastle upon Tyne, England, and Dan Sheldon (Diane) Lossing of Issaquath, Wash.; grandchildren, Alexandra and Adam Lossing; and a sister, Mary Lou Chaffee of Ann Arbor.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Winona, and an infant daughter, Diane.
      No visitation is planned. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the Memorial Presbyterian Church in Midland. Burial services will be private.

      VALPARAISO, Ind. - Guy N. North, 72, a 30 year resident of Valparaiso, formerly of Traverse City, passed away Sunday, April 11, at VNA Mary Bartz Hospice.
      Born Sept. 9, 1926, in Traverse City, he was the son of Guy E. and Catherine (Flis) North. On May 31, 1952, at the University of Chicago, he married Doris Timm.
      Guy served as a production planner and consulting engineer with U.S. Steel, George S. May & Company, Albert Raymond & Associates, and Athletic Lettering in Valparaiso.
      Survivors include his wife, Doris; two children, James (Kate) North of St. George, Utah, and Donna North of Valparaiso; two nephews, Daryl and Dana Anderson of Traverse City; one niece, Cathi Olson of Houston; and two aunts, Dorothy Herkner and Gladys (Vince) Herkner of Traverse City.
      Funeral services were held Thursday at Moeller Funeral Home in Valparaiso.

      MAPLE CITY - Gertrude M. Ogorzelec, 88, of Maple City, formerly of Chicago and Port St. Lucy, Fla., died Dec. 14, 1998, at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City.
      A homemaker, Gertrude was born Dec. 6, 1910, in Chicago, to Vincent and Cecilia (Glapinski) Dombrowski. On June 20, 1931, in Chicago, she married Maximilian Ogorzelec.
      Survivors include her children, Grace Ann Cruzan of Port Angeles, Wash., Paul R. Ogorzelec of Lafayette, Calif., and Marilyn M. Hasberger of of Atlanta; 15 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Maximilian; daughters, Patricia Roelofs and Irene Ogorzelec; sisters, Helen Christensen and Genevieve Surowiec; and brothers, Alphonse, Edward, and Bernard Dombrowski.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Monday April 19 at St. Johns Catholic Church in Glenwood, Ill. Burial will be in Assumption Cemetery in Glenwood.

      INTERLOCHEN - Richard Lee "Dick" Priest, 55, of Interlochen, died Thursday at his home.
      Born Aug. 13, 1943, in Traverse City, he was the son of Irwin "Slim" and Alma H. (Nelson) Priest.
      Richard worked for Cherry Growers for 27 years. He was a member of the Bendon Eagles. He enjoyed working in his yard. His best friend was his dog, Wimp.
      Survivors include his mother, Alma Priest of Traverse City; son, Craig Priest, and his fiancee, Misty Long, of Traverse City; brothers Larry Priest of Bingham, and Jerry (Debbie) Priest of Grawn; former wife, Pat (Pleva) Priest of Traverse City; stepchildren, Wyman (Angela) Friske of Traverse City, Kim (Dennis) Schaub of Traverse City, Bethany (Gerald) Baesch of Lake Ann, and Jackie Dalzell of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Slim Priest; and a niece, Michelle.

      REED CITY - William H. Springer, 53, of Reed City, died Tuesday at his home.
      Wiliam was born July 5, 1945, in Kalamazoo. He attended schools in Traverse City, and served in the U.S. Army and National Guard from 1963 to 1975. He had lived in Reed City for the last 27 years. On April 22, 1972, in Kalamazoo, he married Connie Fuller.
      Survivors include his wife, Connie; one son, Chad of Reed City; three daughters, Renee (Tony) Thornton of Traverse City, Katrina (Bob) Leusby of Kingsley, and Amy (Scott) Cole of Reed City; his mother, Doris Wallace of Lawton; six grandchildren; and two half-sisters, Karen and Wanda Springer.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. today at McDowell Funeral Home in Reed City. Burial will be in Davenport Cemetery.

      Martha Augusta Swift
      Died April 15, 1999
      KEWADIN - Martha Augusta Swift, 91, of Kewadin, previously from Greenville, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born March 8, 1908, in Costello, Pa., she was the daughter of Bernard and Martha (Mousekito) Jacoby.
      A homemaker, Martha had lived in Kewadin since 1968. She was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. She enjoyed gardening and knitting.
      Survivors include three sons, Francis (Janese) Swift of Holland, Richard (Mary) Swift of Kewadin, and Robert (Beverly) Swift of Walnut, Calif.; one sister, Ella Gotz of Laytonsville, Md.; one brother, Harold (Kathy) Jacoby of Zeeland; 11 grandchildren; and 20 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Francis Swift, in 1969; one sister, Mae Huxhold; one brother, Edward Jacoby; and one daughter-in-law, Ruth Swift.
      A Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday, April 23, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. The Rev. Robert Zuchowski will officiate. Burial will be in Rest Haven Memory Gardens.
      In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

      NORTHPORT - Anna Cain, 103, of Northport, died Friday, April 16, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan.
      Anna was born September 18, 1895, in Hebron, Kentucky. She was preceded in death by her first husband, Frank Dolwick, in 1936. She married Allen Cain and moved to the Northport area in 1940. They were lighthouse keepers at several northern Michigan lighthouses.
      Survivors include her children, Kathryn (Frank) Davis, Frank (Lucille) Dolwick, and step-daughter Marie (Noel) Baumberger; her grandchildren, Cheryl Grow, Ronald Davis, David (Dolores) Davis, Jean Ann (Jack) Gryglewski, John Dolwick, and Alan (Donna) Dolwick; and numerous great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Allen Cain, in 1966; one step-son, Albert (Roy) Cain; and one step-daughter, Lillian Horvath.
      Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Northport, with funeral services following at11 a.m. Burial will be at Leelanau Township Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Grandvue Medical Auxiliary, St. Gertrude Catholic Church or the Grand Traverse Lighthouse.

      Carol Ann Davis
      Died April 17, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Carol Ann Davis, 54, of Traverse City, following a brave and strong battle with cancer, died Saturday at her home surrounded by the love of her family, allowing her to depart peacefully.
      Carol was born April 18, 1944, in Saginaw, the daughter of Raymond F. and Aldora (Dolfi) Wallgren. She had been a Traverse City resident since 1972. She and her husband own and operate the Suncatcher Restaurant at Cherry Capital Airport, where Carol was a warm and cheerful face to many early morning travelers. She was previously employed by Carlson Fisheries. She was an avid supporter of the Cherryland Humane Society. She touched everyone she met and was special to many people. She believed in an honest and happy world and instilled that in those she met and those she loved.
      Carol is survived by her husband, Harv, whom she married January 8, 1966; her son, Scott (Melissa) Davis of Ahmeek; her daughter, Brooke Davis (and her husband, Paul Dornquast) of Marquette; her sister Jan (William) Feldt of Saginaw; her nieces and nephews, Steve, Jeff, Kathy, and Jane, their spouses, and children; several cousins; and many, many friends.
      Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, with longtime family friend Kevin Lane officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Cherryland Humane Society, Munson Hospice, or the Grand Traverse Unit of the American Cancer Society.
     
      Elizabeth V. 'Betty' Thalman
      Died April 16, 1999
      CADILLAC - Elizabeth V. "Betty" Thalman, 73, of Cadillac, died Friday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Elizabeth was born March 26, 1926, in Detroit. On March 21, 1946, at the McBain Christian Reformed Church parsonage, she married Robert Thalman.
      Betty graduated from McBain Public High School. She attended the McBain United Presbyterian Church and Cadillac First Presbyterian Church. She had been Sunday School Superintendent and sang in the choir at the McBain United Presbyterian Church and had also done solo work. She also played the saxophone. She was a devoted wife, mother and grandmother, according to Proverbs 31: 10-31. She loved to sew clothing for her children and grandchildren. She enjoyed helping her husband build several homes.
      Survivors include her husband, Robert Thalman of Cadillac; two sons, James (Carol) Thalman of Vail, Colo., and Douglas (Linda) Thalman of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Robert and Heidi Thalman of Traverse City; sisters-in-law, Connie Hess of Conn., Edna King of McBain, and Janet (Lloyd) Mercer of Kalamazoo; a brother-in-law, Keith Thalman of Cadillac; and many other relatives.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; and three brothers, Willard Hess, John Hess, and Douglas Hess.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. The Rev. Timothy Manzer will officiate.

      William James 'Bill' Ragsdale
      Died April 9, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - William James "Bill" Ragsdale, 77, of Traverse City, died Friday, April 9, in Foley, Ala.
      Born Oct. 26, 1921, in Johnson County, Ind., he was the son of Walter and Mabel (Coleman) Ragsdale. On June 10, 1943, in Georgia, he married Marian Douglass.
      Bill was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Air Force. He had been employed by AMOCO for 31 years and was assigned to offices in Indianapolis, Minneapolis and London, England. He then served in Traverse City as the district manager of northern Michigan. He spent the last two years of his career in Detroit and retired in 1977. A resident of Traverse City since 1966, Bill was a member of The Presbyterian Church, the Masonic Lodge and Scottish Rite.
      Survivors include his wife, Marian of Traverse City; a daughter, Mardell (Louis) Grant of Grand Rapids; a son, Douglass Ragsdale of Littleton, Colo.; three grandchildren, Jeffrey W. Grant of Highland Ranch, Colo., James D. Grant of Grand Rapids, and Lindsey A. Ragsdale of Littleton, Colo.; and his mother-in-law, Lola Douglass of Franklin, Ind.
      Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at The Presbyterian Church; the Rev. Dr. Homer Nye will officiate.
      Memorials may be directed to The Presbyterian Church.

      Theodore A. Melcarek
      Died April 18, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Theodore A. Melcarek, 79, of Traverse City, died Sunday at Munson Hospital in Traverse City.
      Theodore was born Oct. 19, 1919, in Chicago. On July 31, 1942, he married Lenore Mikesh.
      After receiving a doctorate in dental surgery at Loyola University, he served proudly in the U.S. Army during World War II. Theodore participated in the D-day invasion of Normandy and earned the rank of major. He practiced dentistry in Chicago for many years before retiring in 1981 to Traverse City.
      Survivors include sons, Peter (Natalie) and Bruce; a daughter, Gretchen (Ted); and grandchildren, Linnaea, Hilary, and Eden.
      His parents, Victor and Anastasia, two sisters and three brothers preceded Theodore in death.
      A private service for the family will be held at a later date.
      Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service of Traverse City is handling arrangements.
     
      Phyllis C. Johnson Toste
      Died April 16, 1999
      PALMETTO, Fla. - Phyllis C. Johnson Toste, 71, of Palmetto, died Friday at Blake Medical Center in Bradenton due to unexpected complications of heart bypass surgery.
      Born June 20, 1927, in Northport, Mich., she was the daughter of Otis and Vera (Egeler) Putnam. On July 7, 1945, in Dearborn Heights, Mich., she married Raymond Lee Johnson who died July 15, 1987. On March 9, 1991, in Palmetto, she married Stephen Toste.
      A former resident of Traverse City, Mich., Phyllis had lived in Palmetto for the past eight years. She had worked for Michigan Bell in Traverse City for over 30 years and retired in 1977 as an employment supervisor. After her retirement she worked at the Bingham Body Shop which was owned and operated by her husband, Raymond. While living in Traverse City, Phyllis had been a member of the Pioneers and did volunteer work for Munson Medical Center and the Grand Traverse court system.
      Survivors include her husband Stephen of Palmetto; a son, Gary (Christine) Johnson of Kettering, Ohio; a daughter, Karen (Gerald) Send of Kingsley, Mich.; two stepsons, Jonathan Toste of San Rafael, Calif., and Alan Toste of San Francisco; a stepdaughter, Lou Ann Toste of San Rafael, Calif.; three brothers, Leland (Ruby) Putnam of Flint, Mich., Gerald (Iva Lee) Putnam of Pueblo, Colo., and Darwin (Patricia) Putnam of Royal Oak, Mich.; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
      Phyllis was preceded in death by her first husband, Raymond, and by her parents.
      Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

      Lucille A. Polmeteer
      Died April 6, 1999
      MATTOON, Ill. - Lucille A. Polmeteer, 94, of Mattoon, formerly of Traverse City, passed away at 8 a.m. Tuesday, April 6, at Carle Arbours, Savoy, Ill.
      Lucille was born September 11, 1904, in Traverse City, the daughter of George Edward and Harriet Amelia (Flaggert) Amiotte. On Sept. 3, 1939, in Chicago, she married Dr. Frank E. Polmeteer.
      Mrs. Polmeteer attended Immaculate Conception Roman Catholic Church in Mattoon. Lucille received her bachelor's degree from Michigan State University and her master's degree from the University of Louisville-Kent School of Social Work. She was employed as a medical and psychiatric social worker at the University of Iowa HospitaIs and Clinics, the University of Michigan Hospitals and Clinics and the Veterans Administration Hospital at Bay Pines, Fla., from which she retired in 1971. She was a life member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees and was a member of the National Association of Social Workers.
      Surviving are her daughter, Marcia (Raymond) Fuhr of Mattoon; grandchildren Kent R. Fuhr of Round Rock, Texas, Kevin C. Fuhr of Indianapolis, Kimberly A. Fuhr, and Kristopher A. Fuhr, both of Mattoon. She is also survived by a nephew, G. William (Phyllis) Blanchard of Petoskey; two nieces, Barbara (Willard) Golden of Traverse City, and Betty (Richard) Riley of Bellaire.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband in 1971; and a sister.
      There will be no visitation. Graveside services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City. Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home of Mattoon is in charge of arrangements.

      Allan D. 'Bud' Wright
      Died April 19, 1999
      KINGSLEY - Allan D. "Bud" Wright, 73, of Kingsley, died Monday at home.
      A life resident of Kingsley, he was born April 30, 1925, the son of Clayton and Elsie (Riley) Wright. On April 19, 1945, in Hannah, he married Rita C. Ockert.
      Allan had been a painter and a sheet metal refinisher. He retired 13 years ago after a number of years with Northern Stainless. He was a member of St. Mary's of Hannah parish. Some of his loves included gardening, tinkering around in his garage and painting cars. Bud possessed the talent of being able to fix anything. He enjoyed sports, especially basketball and baseball. Bud had a wonderful sense of humor, and had special nicknames for all he loved. He had a way of making all of his children feel special in their own way. He especially loved his grandchildren.
      Survivors include his wife, Rita; his children, Carolyn (James) Kik of Honor, Samuel (Cathy) Wright of Caledonia, William (Marcia) Wright of Adrian, and Thomas (Robine) Wright of Traverse City; 10 grandchildren; one great-grandson; his sisters, Evelyn Tyler of Traverse City, Marilyn (Donald) Rodes and Janet (Alfred) Bembeneck, both of Kingsley; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and brother-in-law, Earl Tyler.

      Floyd W. Adams
      Died April 19, 1999
      MANISTEE- Floyd W. Adams, 76, of 710 Elm Street, Manistee, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Sept. 7, 1922, in Beulah, he was the son of Cyrus C. and Ella (Fitz) Adams. He was a graduate of Benzie High School Class of 1941. On Nov. 20, 1948, in Benzonia, he married Margaret L. Earle.
      Floyd served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in Sicily, Naples, Rome and Southern France. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star.
      Floyd had been the director of the Manistee County Social Services for 38 years, retiring on April 1, 1998. He also served as the Director of the Manistee County Medical Care Facility for several years. He farmed and operated his own fruit orchard. Floyd was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Bottrells Sales & Service bowling team in the Elks Bowling League. Memberships also included the United Methodist Church of Manistee, Veterans of Foreign Wars Walsh Post #4499, Disabled American Veterans. Salt City Chapter #43, American Legion Post #10, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #250 and the Muzzle Loaders Club, all of Manistee.
      Survivors include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary (Bret) Tungate of Grand Rapids, and Nancy (Rick) Sorenson of Beulah; two granddaughters, Erika Kolanowski and Brenda Tungate, both of Grand Rapids; a brother and sister-in-law, Harlow (Gladys) Adams of Beulah; two nephews, Richard and Kenneth Adams; and numerous cousins.
      Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Margaret, on Jan. 4, 1998.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Thomas Maher officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

      Timothy James LeVeque Jr.

      AU TRAIN - Timothy James LeVeque Jr., 26, of Au Train, died Sunday at Munising Memorial Hospital Emergency Room from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
      Born Jan. 22, 1973, in Stratford, N.J., he was the son of Timothy and Georgette (Feeney) LeVeque. On Sept. 28, 1996, in Munising, he married Rhonda Renee Coldwell, formerly of Lake Leelanau.
      Timmy loved people and spending time with his family and friends. His twenty months old son, Tyler, was his pride and joy.
      Survivors include his wife, Rhonda Renee LeVeque of Au Train; his son, Tyler Francis LeVeque at home; a new son or daughter expected in Dec.; his parents, Timothy Sr. and Georgette LeVeque of Munising; a sister, Kimberly Francis LeVeque of Munising; paternal grandfather, James LeVeque of Munising; maternal grandmother, Florence Feeney of N.J.; father and mother-in-law, John and Carol Coldwell of Leland; sisters-in-law, Dawn (Mark) Kahler of Kalamazoo and Tanya (Craig) Pope of Lake Leelanau; niece, Danielle Kahler; and numerous aunts, uncles, and cousins.
      Visitation will be from 11 until noon today at the Bowerman Funeral Home in Munising. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Munising. Father Dennis L. Borca and Father Frank Lenz will officiate. Interment will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Munising.

      Born April 27, 1909, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Urban and Anna (Herde) Paquette. On Sept. 14, 1946, in Detroit, she married Leon McKinney.
      Mildred was an accountant for Michigan Bell Telephone Co. for 41 years, retiring in 1969. She was a member of St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire, and a life member of Telephone Pioneers of America.
      Survivors include a step-daughter, Margie Slazinski; nieces, Marjorie Soboczak, Ann Boggs, and Audrey Austin; nephews, Donald Paquette, Jerry Paquette, and Louis Paquette; and many special grand-nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Leon, in 1992; and five brothers and sisters.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at St. Philip Neri Catholic Church in Empire, where a rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 9:30 a.m. Friday at the church. The Rev. Chad Zielinski will officiate. Burial will be in St. Philip Neri Cemetery.

      Joseph L. Morris
      Died Jan. 3, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph L. Morris, 78, of Traverse City, died Jan. 3, 1999, at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born Aug. 30, 1920, in New Castle, Ind., he was the son of Jess and Nell (Gerrard) Morris. In 1949, in South Bend, Ind., he married Annamay York Kauer.
      Joseph was a wood craftsman and boat builder. He enjoyed the outdoors and was a pilot.
      A staff sergeant and gunner with the 95th Bombardment Group, Joseph served in the Army Air Force during World War II. He received the distinguished Flying Cross, Presidential Unit Citation with two oak leaf clusters and the Air Medal with two oak leaf clusters.
      Survivors include one grandson, David (Rittia) Morris of Three Rivers; one step-daughter, Lyndelle (William) Core of Traverse City; four step-grandsons; and one step-granddaughter.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Annamay, in 1986; and son, Richard.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay. The Rev. Carlson Becker will officiate.

      Dorothy G. (Worden) Rice
      Died April 21, 1999
      BENZONIA - Dorothy G. (Worden) Rice, 88, of Benzonia, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 13, 1911, in Beulah, she was the daughter of Charles M. and Pearl (Miner) Worden. On Nov. 30, 1933, at the church manse in Benzonia, she married Douglas R. Rice.
      A lifetime resident of Benzie County, Dorothy was a homemaker and teacher. She was well known in the area as a teacher of piano and organ. A graduate of Benzie County Normal, she taught music in Bridgeport Schools from 1929 to 1932. She also taught at Benzie Central Schools for about 10 years in the 1960s and 1970s, as well as private teaching. A member of First Congregational Church in Benzonia, she was church organist from 1956 to 1997 and minister of music for many years.
      Dorothy and her husband owned and operated Rice's Dairy and Ice Cream Shoppe for many years. She was leader of Dorothy Rice Singers, who entertained patients at The Maples Benzie County Medical Care Facility from 1977 to 1999. She was awarded a community service award for her activities. She served as a Girl Scout leader from 1956 to 1966.
      Dorothy loved growing African violets and outdoor gardening. She loved to play pinochle and cribbage, Crystal Lake and its sunsets and sounds. Her family was her pride and joy.
      Survivors include her husband, Douglas R.; daughters, Marilyn (Richard) Laver of Calif., Julie (James) Bertch of Ariz., and Gayle (William) Hayes of Ypsilanti; grandchildren Michael, Julie, and David Laver, Timothy and Christina Bertch, and Matthew and Wendy Hayes; great-grandchildren, Caitlyn, Benjamin, Mackenzie, and Joshua; brother, Edgar (Violet) Worden of Benzonia; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her sisters, Myrtle Rice and Ruby Loew; and brothers, Paul and Donald Worden.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Congregational Church in Benzonia. The Rev. Stephen Davidson and The Rev. Telfer Mook will officiate.       INTERLOCHEN - Trista E. Schroeter, 14, of Interlochen, died Wednesday at home.
      Born Jan. 16, 1985, she was the daughter of James W. and Paulitte G. (Grundy) Schroeter.
      Home schooled this year, Trista had been a student at Interlochen Elementary School and Traverse City West Junior High School. She loved collecting Beanie Babies and reading.
      Survivors include her parents, James and Paulitte Schroeter of Interlochen; a sister, Arlene (Richard) Killeen of Interlochen; a brother, William J. (Tracey) Schroeter of Interlochen; maternal grandmother, Barbara Grundy of Interlochen; paternal grandmother, Helen Schroeter of Interlochen; and several aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her maternal grandfather, Robert Grundy; and her paternal grandfather, William Schroeter.

      Marian B. Tharp
      Died April 20, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Marian B. Tharp, 72, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at home.
      Born may 10, 1926, in Dixion, Ill., she was the daughter of Steven and Marie (Beach) Tarr. On Dec. Dec. 17, 1949, in Whiting, Ind., she married Wesley L. "Bud" Tharp.
      Marian graduated from Indiana University with a degree in speech and hearing. She taught speech and hearing impaired students. She was a member of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church and the Old Mission Women's Club. Volunteer work included Munson Auxiliary and Munson Speech and Hearing Clinic.
      Survivors include her husband, Wesley L. "Bud" Tharp of Traverse City; son Steven (Melanie Morris) Tharp of Grand Rapids; daughter, Nancy Tharp of Orlando, Fla.; son Richard (Jennifer Stevens) Tharp of Orlando; sister, Dorothy Tarr of Silverdale, Wash., brother Stanley Tarr of Paw Paw, Ill.; a grandchild, Gabriel Tharp of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Marie Tarr.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, May 1, at the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church, where friends may call at the time of the service. The Rev. Dale Hotelling will officiate.

      Floyd W. Adams
      Died April 19, 1999
      MANISTEE- Floyd W. Adams, 76, of 710 Elm Street, Manistee, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Sept. 7, 1922, in Beulah, he was the son of Cyrus C. and Ella (Fitz) Adams. He was a graduate of Benzie High School Class of 1941. On Nov. 20, 1948, in Benzonia, he married Margaret L. Earle.
      Floyd served in the U.S. Army during World War II and fought in Sicily, Naples, Rome and Southern France. He was the recipient of two Purple Hearts and the Silver Star.
      Floyd had been the director of the Manistee County Social Services for 38 years, retiring on April 1, 1998. He also served as the Director of the Manistee County Medical Care Facility for several years. He farmed and operated his own fruit orchard. Floyd was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a member of the Bottrells Sales & Service bowling team in the Elks Bowling League. Memberships also included the United Methodist Church of Manistee, Veterans of Foreign Wars Walsh Post #4499, Disabled American Veterans. Salt City Chapter #43, American Legion Post #10, B.P.O. Elks Lodge #250 and the Muzzle Loaders Club, all of Manistee.
      Survivors include two daughters and two sons-in-law, Mary (Bret) Tungate of Grand Rapids, and Nancy (Rick) Sorenson of Beulah; two granddaughters, Erika Kolanowski and Brenda Tungate, both of Grand Rapids; a brother and sister-in-law, Harlow (Gladys) Adams of Beulah; two nephews, Richard and Kenneth Adams; and numerous cousins.
      Floyd was preceded in death by his parents; and his wife, Margaret, on Jan. 4, 1998.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Thomas Maher officiating. Burial will follow in Oak Grove Cemetery.

      BANKS TOWNSHIP - Rhoda A. Boell, 81, of Banks Township, died Wednesday at Charlevoix Area Hospital.
      Born in Banks Township on Nov. 8, 1917, she was the daughter of Harry and Eliza (Carson) Taylor. On Oct. 28, 1987, she married Edmund Boell.
      Rhoda worked for many years at the Ellsworth Canning Factory and Texas Instruments, retiring in 1981. She was a member of the Central Lake United Methodist Church. Crocheting, traveling, reading and flower gardening were activities she enjoyed.
      Surviving are the children of Rhoda and Robert Evans, Dwayne (Joyce) Evans of Clare, Theora (John) Majszak of Sheridan, Wyo., Janice (David) Stewart of East Lansing, and Annella (Joe) Nachazel of Ellsworth; two stepchildren, Edmund III (Natalie) Boell of Detroit, and Anne (Gene) Muschell of Bellaire; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her sister, Esther Greene; and brothers, Lewis Taylor, Robert Taylor, Ralph Taylor, and Ernest Taylor.

      Edna Dorothy Kukral

      WILLIAMSBURG - Edna Dorothy Kukral, 75, of Williamsburg, died Tuesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Born Dec. 22, 1923, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Charles and Ida Marie (Kuhlman) Kukral.
      Edna had lived in this area all of her life, except the very early years and had worked at Cherry Growers and Morrison's Inc. She had also worked at the courthouse as the probate registrar and was a dispatcher for Kalkaska Oil Co. She was a member of Elk Rapids Baptist Church.
      A veteran of World War II, Edna served in the U.S. Army as an Air Operations Specialist and message center clerk. She had been stationed in Panama and Florida.
      Survivors include a brother-in-law, Alfred Hanna; and many nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; one sister, Evelyn Hanna; and four brothers, Frank, Albert, Charles, and William.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home. The Rev. Gary Gladfelter will officiate. Burial will be in Acme Township Cemetery.

      Arthur was a retired horse trainer. He served in the U. S. Army in World War II.

      ACME - Elizabeth A. Bills, 43, of Acme, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born July 16, 1955, in Watertown, N.Y., she was the daughter of Wallace and Eileen (Long) Mick. On April 12, 1974, in Utica, she married Scott Bills.
      A homemaker, Elizabeth was a member of New Hope Community Church.
      Survivors include her husband, Scott; four children, Heather (Joe) Schmittdiel of Granby, Conn., Samuel, Nathan, and Jacob, all of Traverse City; and her father, Wallace Mick of Warren.
      She was preceded in death by her mother, Eileen Mick, and a son, Mathew.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes, and from 12:30 p.m. Monday until the time of the funeral service, which will be at 2 p.m. Monday at New Hope Community Church. Pastor Dave Standfest and Pastor John Clark will officiate.

      MARSHALL - Melvin E. "Mel" Milatz, 85, of Marshall, died Tuesday.
      Survivors include his wife Elizabeth; son, Gerald M. Milatz of Traverse City; daughter, Janice M. Cornwell of Bay Village, Ohio; stepsons, Gerald A. Gordnier Jr. of Marshall, and Thomas A. Gordnier of Kalamazoo; eight grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.

      Pearl P. Osga
      Died April 23, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Pearl P. Osga, 84, of Traverse City, died Friday at Traverse Terrace.
      Born Dec. 8, 1914, in Elmira, she was the daughter of Stephen and Katherine (Benkowski) Francis. On July 4, 1942, in Elmira, she married Clarence Richard Osga.
      Pearl was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, the Altar Society and Variety Club. She enjoyed gardening and the time she spent with her family.
      Surviving are six children, Gary (Kristi) Osga of Oak Park, Ill., Jerome (Anne) Osga of Grand Rapids, Catherine (Daniel) Paulson of Traverse City, Joseph (Jenny) Osga of New Brunswick, Canada, Barbara (Daniel) Hubbell of Cedar, and Steven (Cindy) Osga of Charlotte. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, John, Aaron, Adam, Jason, Jody, Jay, Jennifer, Amy, Elizabeth, Katy, Meaghan, Theresa, and Michael; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Vincent Francis of Detroit; and four sisters, Helen Grover of Detroit, Annette Gunderson of Boyne City, Ella Kolasa of Gaylord, and Victoria Gruner of Scottsdale, Ariz.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Clarence Richard Osga in 1982; six brothers; two sisters; and two half sisters.
      Friends may call from 3 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Francis Catholic Church. The Rev.       Mary Sherwood
      Died April 22, 1999
      KALKASKA - Mary Sherwood, 90, of Kalkaska, died Thursday at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
      Born February 1, 1909, in Bryant, Ind., she was the daughter of Edward and Martha (Parrish) Bennett. On Dec. 7, 1946, in Kalkaska, she married Edward Sherwood.
      Mrs. Sherwood was employed as a Licensed Practical Nurse in Howell prior to her retirement. She moved to Kalkaska in 1979. For over 30 years, she was a licensed minister of the Church of the Nazarene, and served as the associate pastor of the Kalkaska Church of the Nazarene, where she was involved in Christian outreach. She was a member of the W.C.T.U., and enjoyed crafts, hunting and fishing.
      Surviving are three sons, Clarence (Terri) Long and James Long, both of Kalkaska, and Jerry (Ella) Long of Cadillac; two daughters, Pearl (Wendell) Pluff and Esther (Allen) Rich, both of Battle Creek; and numerous grandchildren, great-grandchildren, and great-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Edward, on June 25, 1979; and two sons, Leroy and Bennie.
      Friends may call at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska from 6 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Pastor David McCool will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska.
     
      John A. Stolowski

      GRAWN - John A. Stolowski, 64, of Grawn, died Thursday at his home in Grawn.
      Born May 26, 1934, in Detroit, he was the son of John A. and Sophia Stolowski. A resident of northern Michigan for the past 35 years, he was a self employed licensed contractor.
      Survivors include his loving companion for the past 10 years, Beverly Lipton of Grawn, formerly of Muskegon; seven children, Janice (Dale) Langusch of Traverse City, John (Edna) Stolowski of Mesick, Jeff (Stephanie) Stolowski of Traverse City, Jeanne (Butch) Peeples of Gaylord, Joyce (Dan) McHugh of Grand Rapids, Jill Stolowski of Grand Rapids, and Jacki (Chris) Allen of Battle Creek; and 13 grandchildren, Tom and Kate Langusch, Randy and Nicole Stolowski, Sara and Clarke Peeples, Daniel, Maggie, Taylor and Dylan McHugh, and Emma Mae, Travis, and Michael Stolowski.
      There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. Sunday at Christ United Methodist Church, 1249 Three Mile Road South, Traverse City. The Rev. Louis Grettenberger will officiate.

      Died April 23, 1999
      CENTRAL LAKE - Phyllis R. Schoensee, 50, of Central Lake, died Friday at Charlevoix Area Hospital.
      Born May 21, 1948, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Charles and Maude (Robinson) Morley. On Aug. 9, 1969, in Ann Arbor, she married James R. Schoensee.
      Phyllis had resided in Central Lake since 1970, except for two years in Montrose, Colo., and three years in Fennville and Lapeer. She had worked as a Simulation Technician for Radiation Therapy at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey for many years. She was previously a beautician. She was a member of the American Society of Radiologic Technologists and the Windstar Foundation of Snowmass, Colo.
      Survivors include her husband, James; three children, Thomas M. (May) of Daly City, Calif., Mathew J. of Mount Pleasant, and Katherine A. of Mount Pleasant; her mother, Maude Morley of Ocala, Fla.; two sisters, Beverly (Donald) Williams of Littleton, Colo., and Carolyn (Darwin) Campbell of Otisville; a granddaughter, Alexis Marie; a step-grandson, Greg; two nieces; and two nephews.
      The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Monday at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home, with the Rev. Dick Sommer officiating. Final disposition will take place in Colorado.

      John A. Stolowski
      Died April 22, 1999
      GRAWN - John A. Stolowski, 64, of Grawn, died Thursday at his home in Grawn.
      Born May 26, 1934, in Detroit, he was the son of John A. and Sophia Stolowski. A resident of northern Michigan for the past 35 years, he was a self employed licensed contractor.
      Survivors include his loving companion for the past 10 years, Beverly Lipton of Grawn, formerly of Muskegon; seven children, Janice (Dale) Langusch of Traverse City, John (Edna) Stolowski of Mesick, Jeff (Stephanie) Stolowski of Traverse City, Jeanne (Butch) Peeples of Gaylord, Joyce (Dan) McHugh of Grand Rapids, Jill Stolowski of Grand Rapids, and Jacki (Chris) Allen of Battle Creek; and 13 grandchildren, Tom and Kate Langusch, Randy and Nicole Stolowski, Sara and Clarke Peeples, Daniel, Maggie, Taylor and Dylan McHugh, and Emma Mae, Travis, and Michael Stolowski.
      There will be no visitation. Memorial services will be at 3 p.m. today at Christ United Methodist Church, 1249 Three Mile Road South, Traverse City. The Rev. Louis Grettenberger will officiate.

      KINGSLEY - Nathaniel Robert Ingersoll, stillborn son of Gary and Michelle (Mooring) Ingersoll, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Survivors include his parents; a brother, Travis, and a sister, Kaylee, both at home; grandparents, Gary and Sue Ingersoll of Lansing, and Clive and Dawn Raymer of Kingsley; and several aunts, uncles, and cousins.
      Nathaniel was preceded in death by an aunt, Patricia Nation.
      A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Greenwood Cemetery in Manton.

      Marybelle M. Turnipseed
      Died April 23, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Marybelle M. Turnipseed, 77, of Elk Rapids, died Friday.
      Born Oct. 1, 1921, in Elk Rapids, she was the daughter of the late Max and Celia (Clark) Herman. On April 6, 1946, in Elk Rapids, she married Vernon W. Turnipseed.
      Marybelle was a homemaker. She attended Elk Rapids Baptist Church. Marybelle enjoyed reading the bible, flowers, gardening, her family and her grandchildren.
      Survivors include her husband of 53 years, Vernon; a son, Dennis Turnipseed of Elk Rapids; and three grandchildren, Cari Turnipseed of Traverse City, Curt Turnipseed of South Dakota, and Debra Turnipseed of Acme.

      Died April 23, 1999
      MAPLE CITY - Isadore F. Waslawski, 92, of Maple City, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 15, 1907, in Centerville Township, he was the son of Joseph and Josephine (Rosinski) Waclawski. On Aug. 20, 1928, at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Cedar, he married Genevieve G. Radtke.
      A lifelong resident of Leelanau County, Isadore was a self-employed carpenter and farmer. He was a member of St. Rita's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Maple City.
      Survivors include one son, Raymond (June) Waslawski of Traverse City; two daughters, Dorothy (Philip) Walters of Traverse City and Dolores Kratochvil of Traverse City; three brothers, Noah (Gertrude) Waclawski of Grand Rapids, Andrew Waclawski of Traverse City, and Joe (Joanne) Waslawski of Traverse City; five sisters, Blanche Jozwiak of Bolingbrook, Ill., Michaeline Novak of Cedar, Orpha Cunningham of Traverse City, Leona Bush of Shelby Township, and Alice Waclawski of Traverse City; several aunts, uncles, and cousins; 12 grandchildren; and numerous great-grandchildren, stepgreat-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and stepgreat-great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his wife, Genevieve, in 1992; a son, Edward L. Waslawski in 1982; and three brothers, Edmund, Leonard, and Clemence.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; a rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Tuesday at St. Rita's-St. Joseph's Catholic Church; the Rev.       Died April 25, 1999
      MAPLE CITY - Antoinette A. Shimek, 83, of Maple City, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A resident of Leelanau County most of her life, she was the daughter of Joe and Agatha (Miller) Gala. On Sept. 7, 1942, in Isadore, she married Charles G. Shimek who died in 1975.
      Antoinette taught school for a short time in her younger years. She loved her children, was a fantastic cook, always had a big garden and worked very hard on the family farm with her husband. She was a member of St. Rita's Catholic Church in Maple City.
      Surviving are four children, Jane (Frank) LaRue of Benzonia, Charles (Nancy) Shimek of Mesick, Thomas (Linda) Shimek of Maple City, and Grace (Gene) Novak of Cedar; and seven grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, parents and stepmother.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City; a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m.

      Died April 20, 1999
      OLD MISSION - Marian B. Tharp, 72, of Old Mission, died Tuesday at home.
      Born May 10, 1926, in Dixion, Ill., she was the daughter of Steven and Marie (Beach) Tarr. On Dec. 17, 1949, in Whiting, Ind., she married Wesley L. "Bud" Tharp.
      Marian graduated from Indiana University with a degree in speech and hearing. She taught speech and hearing impaired students. She was a member of the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church and the Old Mission Women's Club. Volunteer work included Munson Auxiliary and Munson Speech and Hearing Clinic.
      Survivors include her husband, Wesley L. "Bud" Tharp of Old Mission; son Steven (Melanie Morris) Tharp of Grand Rapids; daughter, Nancy Tharp of Orlando, Fla.; son Richard (Jennifer Stevens) Tharp of Orlando; sister, Dorothy Tarr of Silverdale, Wash.; brother, Stanley Tarr of Paw Paw, Ill.; grandchild, Gabriel Tharp of Grand Rapids; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents, Steven and Marie Tarr.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Ogdensburg United Methodist Church; friends may call at the time of the service. The Rev. Dale Hotelling will officiate.

      Mary Catherine (McDonald) Hill
      Died April 26, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Mary Catherine (McDonald) Hill, 73, of Elk Rapids, formerly of Saginaw, passed away Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after a brief illness.
      Mary Catherine was born on Sept. 4, 1925, in Saginaw. On Aug. 20, 1949, in Saginaw, she married Robert H. Hill Sr. at St. Andrew Catholic Church.
      Mary Catherine was employed as Principal in the Saginaw School System for many years. She received her bachelor of science degree from the University of Wisconsin in 1948, master of arts degree from Central Michigan University in 1970 and doctor of philosophy in education from Michigan State University in 1977.
      Mary Catherine was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. She was a former member of the Saginaw Club and the Saginaw Country Club.
      Survivors include her husband, Robert; one daughter, Catherine Kelly (Joseph) Schwartz of Healdsburg, Calif.; one son, Robert H. (Barbara) Hill Jr. of Gainesville, Ga.; four grandchildren, Melissa and Kelley McDonald, Andrew Hill, and Jessica Schwartz; three brothers, Joseph F. (Bonnie) McDonald of Bailey, Colo., F. James (Betty) McDonald of Bloomfield Hills, and Thomas W. (Ruth) McDonald of Saginaw.

      PORT CHARLOTTE, Fla. - Marvin B. Kean, 91, of Port Charlotte, formerly of Traverse City, died Sunday, April 25.
      Born Sept. 21, 1907, in Detroit, he was the owner of Kean's Detroit Yacht Harbor Marina. He had been a member of the St. Clair Yacht Club in Detroit.
      Survivors include a daughter, Karen Flowers of Traverse City; two sons, John of Grosse Pointe Woods, and Barry of Grosse Pointe Farms; six grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

      Eugene H. Kortokrax
      Died April 26, 1999
      OTSEGO - Eugene H. Kortokrax, 79, of Otsego, passed away Monday, at his home. Born March 30, 1920, in Hannah, he was the son of Augustine and Julia (John) Kortokrax. On Jan. 30, 1943, at St. Margaret's Church in Otsego, he married the former Valeria Warner.
      A graduate of Buckley High School, Eugene was a member of St. Margaret's Church of Otsego and the Knights of Columbus. In 1976, after 36 years of service, he retired from Menasha Corporation. For the last 20 years, he and his wife, Valeria, spent the winters in Haines City, Fla. Gene loved to fish. For 10 years after his retirement, they had a home on Arbutus Lake. He enjoyed being a handyman and fixing things around the home.
      Survivors include his wife, Valeria; a daughter and her husband, Gloria (Jake) Austhof of Grand Rapids; a son and his wife, Roger (Nancy) Kortokrax of Otsego; six grandchildren, Jill (John) Alfond of Bellgrade Lakes, Maine, Bradley Landman of Denver, Colo., Jason (Nancy) Kortokrax of Plainwell, Amy (Andy) Hartman, Aaron Kortokrax, and Jason Boss, all of Otsego; four great-grandchildren; two sisters, Mildred Miller of Baltimore, Md., and Marcelle (Pat) Robinson of Traverse City; two sisters-in-law, Dorothy Kortokrax and Charlene Kortokrax, both of Traverse City; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by a sister, Geraldine Murphy; and two brothers, Robert and John Kortokrax.
      Friends may meet the family from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Winkel Funeral Home in Otsego, where a Scripture Service will be held at 6 p.m. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Margaret's Church, with the Rev. Fr. Donald P. Klingler officiating. Cremation will follow with burial of ashes at St. Mary's Cemetery near Traverse City.

      CEDAR - Leila Jayne Brooks, 70, of Cedar died April 26 at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Aug. 19, 1928, in Palmyra, Ohio, she was the daughter of Alvin J. and Christine Alberta (Sanders) Sutherin. She married Robert D. Brooks on March 7, 1944, in Fort Leonard Wood, Mo.
      Previously from Westland, Leila was a homemaker and lived in the Cedar area since 1985. She loved her family and grandchildren. They were very special to her.
      She is survived by her husband, Robert D.; five children, Lisa (Christopher) Wheeler, Mark (Sharon) Brooks, Sherri Welch, Kathleen (John) Robinson, and Michael (Barbara) Brooks; a brother, Jack Perkins; 12 grandchildren; Michele, Mark, and Michael Jr. Brooks, Greg (Kate) Schaecher, Bob (Crissy) Schaecher, Michelle Robinson, Scott and Sarah Welch, Jennifer (Peter) Foust, John Brooks, Elizabeth and Ryan Wheeler.
      She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Betty Hutton.

      KALAMAZOO - Jean Marie Cook, 73, of Kalamazoo, died Wednesday at her home.
      Born Aug. 13, 1925, in Summit City, she was the daughter of Floyd and Linice (Taylor) Pence.
      Jean was a member of the Loyalty Chapter No. 494 Order of the Eastern Star, the Cooper Congregational Church and the Over 50's Club at Cooper. She loved to knit and read.
      Survivors include four children, Shirley (Steve) Dalton of Tecumseh, Amos (Kathleen) Cook II of Schoolcraft, JoAnne (Burt) Finch of Waterville, Ohio, and Peter (Katha) Cook of Tontogany, Ohio; nine grandchildren; a great-grandchild; a sister-in-law, Rosemary Pence of Otsego; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
      Jean was preceded in death by a brother, Jim Pence, and her husband, Amos Cook on Oct. 7, 1992.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Joseph Heureux, 84, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Grand Traverse Pavilions after an extended illness.
      Born Dec. 4, 1914, in Universal, Ind., he was the former owner of the Mar-Jo Orchards in Omena. He was also a fruit buyer and orchard manager for Frigid Food Products, Inc. He enjoyed farming, hunting, camping and fishing. His children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren brought great joy to him.
      Survivors include his wife of 63 years, Marcelline of Traverse City; children, Barbara (Joseph) Kompes of Willowick, Ohio, Linda (Paul) Denawetz of Farmington Hills, Janis (Skip) Mebert of Suttons Bay, Allan (Magali Carrera) Heureux of South Dartmouth, Mass., and Carol (James) Preuett of Traverse City; grandchildren, Glenn Baxter, Joan Heppert, Jennifer (Joshua) Kohler, Jill and Joanie Mebert, Amy Denawetz, and Arin and Ana Heureux; great-grandchildren, Danielle Baxter, Chelsea and Chandler Heppert, Madelyn Kohler and two step-grandchildren, Lindsey (Preuett) Kennedy and Ryan Preuett.
      He was preceded in death by his sisters, Emelia Sandefur, and Emma Rautiola; brothers, Anthony Heureux, and John Sands; and five infant siblings.

      WALTER M. HUGHES, 47, of Traverse City, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, in Leelanau.

      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
     
      JUNETTA STUART, 87, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      The family will receive friends from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Saturday. at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona. A prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Monday at the Our Savior Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hartland. A chapel committal service will follow at 2:30 p.m. at the Glen Eden Cemetery in Livonia.
     
      Julia B. Downey
      Died April 28, 1999
      FIFE LAKE - Julia B. Downey, 83, of Fife Lake died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Nov. 22, 1915, in Fife Lake, she was the daughter of Edwin and Ida (Miller) Mills. On April 20, 1935, in Indiana, she married DeBlenna Downey.
      A homemaker, Julia had lived all of her life in Fife Lake. She worked several years as township treasurer for Fife Lake, and also worked at Mitchell-Bentley in Cadillac, retiring in 1981.
      Survivors include six children, Janet (Kenneth Sr.) Tidey of Manton, Thomas Downey of Fife Lake, Iva (Melvin) Welch of Traverse City, Robert Downey of Fife Lake, Dennis Downey of Fife Lake, and Dale (Susan) Downey of Fife Lake; two sisters, Reatha Loomis of Mount Morris, and Iva Heinze of Potterville; one brother, Raymond Mills of New Jersey; 18 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
      The daughters and sons would like to thank Sue Downey for all the hours of loving care she gave our mother.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, DeBlenna; a daughter, Rita; and four brothers, John, Orville, Russell, and Ervin Mills.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Fife Lake Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the Fife Lake Rescue Squad.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley.
     
      Harold K. Engle
      Died April 29, 1999
      WILLIAMSBURG - Harold K. Engle, school teacher and farmer of Williamsburg, was born December 12, 1912 in Cass County to Frank and Anna (Gray) Engle.
      Harold graduated from Dowagiac High School in 1930. After attending County Normal he taught at Gage Country School. He then attended Central Michigan College and transferred to Michigan State College to graduate as a Vocational Agriculture teacher in 1936. He was a faculty member for the World War II veterans agriculture program in Grand Traverse, Leelanau and Antrim Counties. He was awarded a National Science Foundation scholarship and received his Masters Degree from the University of Michigan in mathematics and science education in 1959. His teaching career included positions in Stanton, Northport, Traverse City, Williamsburg and Hudsonville. He retired from teaching in 1974.
      Harold purchased a farm in Grand Traverse County in 1945, first having a dairy herd, then growing sweet and tart cherries. His enjoyment of farming and working hard remained throughout his life.
      After retiring from teaching, he spent winters in Florida and Arizona. A passionate golfer, he scored his age several times in recent years. He was an active member of the Arizona City, Ariz. and the Elk Rapids Golf Clubs. Harold had a lifelong involvement in sports both coaching and participating. He had been a semi-professional baseball pitcher after high school.
      Harold is survived by his wife, Bethany; daughters, Ann Marie (Arden) Beck of East Lansing and Susan (Kenneth) Robinson of Weirton, W.Va.; and son, Kenneth (Janet) Engle of Williamsburg; brother, Garold (Ann) Engle of Dowagiac; six grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; two nieces; and one nephew.
      Harold was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Millard (Eva) Engle; and his wife Alice (Hopphan).
      Cremation has taken place. A visitation will be at Central United Methodist Church, 222 Cass Street, Traverse City from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday.
      Memorials may be directed to the Arthritis Foundation or the charity of choice.

      Arlene E.E.D. Humpert
      Died April 17, 1999
      SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Arlene E.E.D. Humpert, 65, of Rialto, Calif., died Saturday, April 17, of heart failure at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino.
      Born Oct. 31, 1933, in Flint, she was the daughter of Royce and Ethel (Jamison) Ellston. On Aug. 10, 1950, she married Claude E. Dingeman; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1965. On Jan. 28, 1973, she married Richard "Jack" M. Humpert.
      Arlene, a native of Michigan, lived in Rialto for 34 years. She attended Traverse City Central High School. She was a 1984 cum laude graduate as a managerial professional from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. For 33 years she worked as supervising loan officer for the Norton Credit Union.
      Survivors include her husband, Richard "Jack" M.; two daughters, Teresa (Rex) Payne of Suttons Bay, and Sheryl Dingeman of Rialto; three stepsons, Bruce J. of San Bernardino, Jerry C. and Mike, both of Bloomington, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Sandra of Upland, Calif.; her sister, Deloris (William) Herman of Suttons Bay; a brother, Carl (Linda) Ellston of Barstow, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Claude Dingeman; a brother, Floyd; and a stepson, Greg Humpert.
      Visitation was held at Ingold Chapel, 8277 Juniper Ave., Fontana, Calif. Graveside services were held at Green Acres Memorial Park, 11715 Cedar Ave., Bloomington, Calif.
     
      Howard S. Woodruff
      Died April 28, 1999
      LAKE ANN - Howard S. Woodruff, 79, resident of Lake Ann since 1984, formerly of Beaverton, died Wednesday at Mid-Michigan Medical Center in Gladwin.
      Born January 21, 1920, in Billings Township, he married Evelyn (Levandoski) Woodruff on August 22, 1943 in Standish.
      Howard was a building administrator for 38 years at Dow Chemical Company in Midland. He retired in 1982. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II as a Staff Sergeant and was a member of Lake Ann United Methodist Church.
      He is survived by his wife, Evelyn of Beaverton; daughter, Judy DePodesta of Rockford; two sons, Bob (Cindy) Woodruff of Beaverton and Dick (Barb) Woodruff of Beaverton; nine grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Neal Woodruff of Gladwin; three sisters, Wanda Smith of Gladwin, Blanche Wilson of Pinconning, and Doris Bock of Rhodes; and special friends, Sarah and George Rosiak and Jeff, Greg and Christine Rosiak.
      Howard was preceded in death by an infant son, Howard Samuel Woodruff in 1952; two brothers, Earl and Jack Woodruff; and two sisters, Lila Erway and Nola Spenser.
      Visitation is from 12 to 9 p.m. today at the Hall Funeral Home, 440 E. Cedar Avenue, Gladwin. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, at the funeral home. The Rev. Charles Towersey will be officiating. Burial services will take place at the Billings Township Cemetery, Beaverton.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Lake Ann United Methodist Church or the donor's favorite charity.
