OPAL L. BELL, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday, April 29, 1999.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m., Monday, at the First Christian Church. A complete obituary will run in the Sunday edition of the Traverse City Record Eagle.
     
      WALTER MAGEE, 61, of Goose Creek, S.C., formerly of Fife Lake, died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at his home. Born March 25, 1938, in Detroit, he was a Navy veteran.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Northwoods Chapel, Charleston, S.C.
     
      EVERETT C. TYLER, 85, of Frankfort died Wednesday, April 28, 1999, at Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital Long Term Care Facility.
      Friends may call the funeral home from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today and Sunday. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Home in Benzonia.. Interment will follow at the Crystal Lake Township Cemetery North.
     
      Chrisann Raabe Girocco
      Died April 28, 1999
      NORTHPORT - Chrisann Raabe Girocco, 48, of Northport and Destin, Fla., died Wednesday.
      Born, July 31, 1950, at the West Point Military Academy, she was the daughter of Ralph C. and Anita Raabe.
      Chrisann had a passion for landscaping and flowers. One could always find her wherever she was by her off-key whistling or humming. Her success in real estate was legend.
      We will miss her bright smile and gentle ways. May Heaven be a happier place with her presence, because she was an angel before she arrived there.
      She is survived by her parents, her loving husband, Thomas M. Girocco of Destin, Fla. and Northport; one son, Michael (Julie) Girocco and their two sons, Harris and Slater of Bel Aire, Calif.; a daughter, Elizabeth Girocco (David) Patterson and their son Max of Dallas; mother-in-law, Betty Girocco of Muskegon; sister Lisa R. (Ron) Krenz and their three children, Kris, Holly, and Sarah, of Milpitas, Calif.; two brothers, Ralph C. (Teresa) Raabe III and their daughter, Rebecca of San Jose, Calif., and Mark S. (Nancy) Raabe and their daughter Lauren of San Mateo, Calif.; and her grandmother, Ruth Schult of Van Wert, Ohio.
      A memorial service will be conducted at noon Sunday at Emerald Coast Funeral Home, 113 Racetrack Road, Fort Walton, Fla.

      Walter M. Hughes
      Died April 28, 1999
      Traverse City - Walter M. Hughes, 47, of Traverse City, died Wednesday in Leelanau as the result of a construction accident.
      He was born on July 28, 1951, in Petoskey, the son of Junior Max and Wilma (Morningstar) Hughes. Walter enjoyed crafts, golfing, camping, hunting, and most of all his family.
      He is survived by one son, Thomas Morrison of Interlochen; his mother, Wilma Hughes of Alba; three brothers, Bill (Zina) Hughes of Mancelona, Ken (Robin) Hughes of Kalamazoo, and John (Joann) Hughes of Farwell; his fianc‚, Beverly Husted of Traverse City; Beverly's children, William Husted of Traverse City, Henry Husted III of Grawn, Laura (fianc‚ Richard) Husted of Traverse City, and Yavonne Kalush of Buckley; Walter and Beverly's 17 grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his father, Junior Max Hughes on February 18, 1993; one brother, David Hughes; and one sister, Barbara Hughes.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. today at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona. Rev. Ron McGregor will officiate. Interment will be held at a later date in Fairview Cemetery, Mancelona.
      The family was served by the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona.

      Humpert
      Died April 17, 1999
      SAN BERNARDINO, Calif. - Arlene E.E.D. Humpert, 65, of Rialto, Calif., died Saturday, April 17, of heart failure at St. Bernardine Medical Center in San Bernardino.
      Born Oct. 31, 1933, in Flint, she was the daughter of Royce and Ethel (Jamison) Ellston. On Aug. 10, 1950, she married Claude E. Dingeman; he preceded her in death on March 14, 1965. On Jan. 28, 1973, she married Richard "Jack" M. Humpert.
      Arlene, a native of Michigan, lived in Rialto for 34 years. She attended Traverse City Central High School. She was a 1984 cum laude graduate as a managerial professional from Pomona College in Claremont, Calif. For 33 years she worked as supervising loan officer for the Norton Credit Union.
      Survivors include her husband, Richard "Jack" M.; two daughters, Teresa (Rex) Payne of Suttons Bay, and Sheryl Dingeman of Rialto; three stepsons, Bruce J. of San Bernardino, Jerry C. and Mike, both of Bloomington, Calif.; a stepdaughter, Sandra of Upland, Calif.; her sister, Deloris (William) Herman of Suttons Bay; a brother, Carl (Linda) Ellston of Barstow, Calif.; 15 grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Claude Dingeman; a brother, Floyd; and a stepson, Greg Humpert.
      Visitation was held at Ingold Chapel, 8277 Juniper Ave., Fontana, Calif. Graveside services were held at Green Acres Memorial Park, 11715 Cedar Ave., Bloomington, Calif.
     
      TYLER JAMES CUNNINGHAM, infant, of Mesick, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, at DeVos Children's Hospital in Grand Rapids.
      Funeral services will be held at 12:00 noon on Monday at the Covell Funeral Home in Traverse City. Friends may call from 10:00 a.m. until the time of service.
     
      LEONARD R. FRANCKOWIAK, 83, of Manistee, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at his home.
      Memorial services conducted by the Manistee Elks Lodge No. 250 will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee, followed by military graveside services at Oak Grove Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from 12:00 noon. until the time of service.
     
      A memorial service for CHARLES F. MOEHLE, will be held at 7:30 p.m. on Friday at Christ the King Church, Acme.
      Charles, 82, of Traverse City and Titusville, Fla., died Dec. 25, 1998. He was born in Washington, D.C.
     
      ROBERT P. PANEK, 69, died Tuesday, April 20, 1999, at the McGuire Veterans Hospital in Richmond, Va. He was a former resident of Gaylord and Traverse City.
      Private interment will take place at Fairview Cemetery in Gaylord.
     
      Opal L. Bell
      Died April 29, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Opal L. Bell, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday, April 29, 1999, and has gone to join her husband, daughter and parents in heaven.
      Born April 24, 1918, the daughter of Ray and Edna (Farrand) Miller. On July 7, 1938, she married Russell Bell. They were married for over 53 years. Her family called her St. Opal because of her devotion to her husband during his illness.
      She held many positions within the PTA organization, and was a past President of the Traverse Heights PTA, past Vice-president of the State PTA and past President of the local council for PTA. She was a member of the First Christian Church. Opal was active in the Girl Scouts as a troop leader and at council and state levels. Opal was head chaperone for the Traverse City High School Band for six years. She loved it when the kids called her "Ma Bell".
      Opal was a homemaker, an accomplished seamstress and the center of her home. She had a way with children. Her grandchildren and great-grandchildren adored her. The great-grandchildren called her "grandma great". She liked traveling with her family and loved camping, bonfires and introducing her grandchildren to camping.
      She is survived by three daughters, Margo (Glenn) Neihardt of Traverse City, Vicki (David) Kik of Sault Ste. Marie, and Lona (Jeffrey) Vogie of Bakersfield, Calif.; 10 grandchildren, Michelle (Don) Takehara, Donald (Denise) Neihardt, Karen (Tom) Berger, Norman (Julie) Kalchik, Kevin (Renee) Kalchik, Laura (Derek) Stedman, Tonya (her friend Kurt and his son, Kevin Rice), Melissa, Kimberly and Jason Kik; great-grandchildren, Margo, Brittany, Jasmine, Adrienne and Taylor; sisters, Lois Hostetler, Lamoine (Robert) Rank; and brothers, Deo (Marda) Miller and Wilfred (Norma) Miller.
      Opal was preceded in death by her loving husband, Russell; daughter, Marlene Kalchik; sister, Beth Shumaker; and granddaughter, Joy Marlene Neihardt.
      Visitation will be held from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. and 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at the First Christian Church with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating. Interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery, Traverse City.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the First Christian Church or the American Cancer Society.
     
      Nell Goodwin Benner
      Died April 30, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Nell Goodwin Benner, 93, of Traverse City, formerly of Detroit and Marysville, died Friday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born on July 28, 1905, in Windsor, Ontario, Canada, she was the daughter of Albert and Alice (Newberry) Goodwin. On August 17, 1927, in Oakland County, she married Ernest Benner.
      Nell was a Licensed Practical Nurse and a loving wife, mother and grandmother. She belonged to the Licensed Practical Nurses' Association, the Marysville Women's Club, the Marysville Book and Garden Club, the Lioness Club in Marysville and the NAACP. She was a former member of the First Congregational Church and Bahai Faith in Port Huron and was a member of the Grace Episcopal Church in Traverse City.
      Surviving are five children; Dr. Carl (Sally) Benner of Traverse City, Ernest (Barbara) Benner of Charles Town, W.Va., Barbara (Harold) Hawkins of Bryan, Texas, Lesley (Keith) Berkeley of Columbia, S.C., and Susan (Robert) McKechnie of Stratford, Ontario; 11 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren; one brother, Albert Goodwin of Florida; two sisters, Hazel Delaney of Detroit and Elsie Prouty Ebert of Hazel Park.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Ernest, who died on Oct. 16, 1959; her parents; and a brother, William Goodwin.
      Services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Grace Episcopal Church, where friends may call at the time of the service. Rev. D. Edward Emenheiser and Rev. Catherine Woods Richardson will be officiating. Burial will be in Riverlawn Cemetery in Marysville.
      Memorials may be directed to Marysville Public Library or Port Huron Public Library.

      McPherson
      Died April 30, 1999
      ELBERTA - Virginia M. McPherson, 69, of Elberta, died Friday evening at her home.
      Born on July 19, 1929, in Terre Haute, Ind., she was the daughter of Russell and Margaret (Pritchard) Haltom. She had been a resident of Elberta since 1968, formerly of Grand Rapids. In 1957 she married Robert McPherson, Sr.
      Virginia loved to play cards, bingo, visit the casinos and play the lottery tickets. She was a loving wife and mother and she adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was a member of the Elberta United Methodist Church.
      She is survived by her husband, Robert; her children, Gary (Annette) McPherson of Elberta, Ronald (Kristie) McPherson of Benzonia, Carolyn (Richard) Page of Benzonia, Brenda (Gary) Foster of Elberta, Vicki (David) Fletcher of Holland and Mary (Charles) Kalbach of Elberta. Virginia was the proud grandmother of 29 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brother Melvin of Elberta; and two sisters, Barbara (Thurman) Wood of Kaleva and Mary Franklin of Benton Harbor.
      Virginia was preceded in death by her parents; daughter, Karen Joyce Page; two sons, Robert Jr. and Frank McPherson; granddaughter, Melaine Sue Page; and two brothers, Robert and Donald Haltom.
      Services will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia with Rev. Marvin Rosa officiating. Interment will follow at Gilmore Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the funeral home at the time of services.

      GLADYS C. DEWEY, 97, of Bellaire, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire. She was born Aug. 22, 1901, in Manton.
      A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at Fairview Cemetery in Custer Township. Arrangements are being handled by the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      RUTH L. PORTER, 66, of Manistee, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at West Shore Hospital in Manistee.
      Friends may visit from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Herbert Funeral Home of Manistee. Visitation will also be held from 1 p.m. until the 2 p.m. funeral service Wednesday at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery in Onekama.
     
      BRENDA S. SCHMOKE, 53, of Bellaire, died Sunday, May 2, 1999, at her home. She was born Feb. 3, 1946.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.
     
      BERNADINE THOMAS, 75, of Manistee, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee; an evening prayer service will take place at 8 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's of Mount Carmel Shrine Church in Manistee. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
     
      Donald C. 'Don' Brown
      Died May 2, 1999
      CENTRAL LAKE - Donald C. "Don" Brown, 65, of Central Lake, died Sunday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
      Born Nov. 11, 1933, in Mancelona, he was the son of Ceil and Hazel (Anderson) Brown.
      Don was a machinist for Key Two Corp. in Elk Rapids for many years. He had also worked for Sun Cutters of Elk Rapids and Gulf and Western in Mancelona. Don served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
      On Nov. 29, 1974, in Central Lake, he married Mary Carolyn (Dawson) Rogers who survives. Also surviving are a son, Robert Brown of Central Lake; three daughters, Donna Green of Lansing, Trudy (John) Mann of Bellaire, and Rhonda (Walter) Mann of Central Lake; five stepsons, Jay Rogers of Central Lake, Brian (Cindy) Rogers of Central Lake, Kenneth (Kay) Rogers of Charlevoix, Neil (Donna) Rogersof Central Lake, and Dean Rogers of Central Lake; three stepdaughters, Robin (Nate) Sommer, Julie Rogers, and Cathy (Robert) Davis - all of Central Lake; three brothers, William (Doris) Brown of Grand Rapids, Richard (Mary) Brown of White Cloud, and Gordon 'Pete' (Margie) Brown of Grand Rapids; a sister, Sandra (Michael) Flannigan of Mancelona; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
      Don was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Beverly Olds and Dorothy Harrington.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; the Rev. Estel Clark will officiate. Committal services will follow at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township under the auspices of the Torch Lake Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 7985.
      Memorial contributions may be made to Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility or the Alzheimer's Association.
     
      Earl Franklin Kaiser Sr.
      Died May 1, 1999
      FIFE LAKE - Earl Franklin Kaiser Sr., 77, of Fife Lake, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born April 28, 1922, in Armada, he was the son of Frank Julius and Ruth Ann (Wiemann) Kaiser. On April 8, 1947, in Bryan, Ohio, he married Leona May Flintham.
      A veteran of World War II, Earl was an automotive parts manager for Oldsmobile. He was a member of the Masons of Wyandotte and a previous resident of Riverview.
      Survivors include his wife, Leona, of Fife Lake; seven children, Diana (Ray) Beatty of Taylor, Earl (Candy) Kaiser Jr. of Southgate, Harry Kaiser of Monroe, Gail Kaiser of Williamsburg, Ruth (Bill) Mealback of Allen Park, Wendy (Chris) Feys of Traverse City, and Frances (Tim) Walsh of Traverse City; a sister, Dorothy Vessells of Southgate; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
      Earl was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters, Eleanor and Viola
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; the Rev. Donald V. Engebretson will officiate.

      McPherson
      Died April 30, 1999
      ELBERTA - Virginia M. McPherson, 69, of Elberta, died Friday evening at her home.

      Dr. William 'Bill' Thomas Unkefer
      Died April 24, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Dr. William Thomas "Bill" Unkefer, 76, of Traverse City, went to join his Father in heaven on Saturday, April 24.
      Born July 14, 1922, in Detroit, he was the son of Earl and Cora Unkefer. On Feb. 8, 1947, he married Eugenia Marie Heiler.
      Bill attended Oberlin College from 1940 to 1942. In 1947 he received a degree in medicine from Wayne State University.
      William specialized in obstetrics and gynecology in and around the Detroit area for 33 years. He served at Grace Hospital in Detroit and then moved to William Beaumont Hospital in Royal Oak. Three years before his complete retirement, he was head of William Beaumont Hospital's obstetrics/gynecology clinic. Bill was proud of the many lives he brought into this world, including two of his grandchildren.
      An active member of his community, he served on numerous boards and committees, including the Christian Medical Society; Board of Directors of World Medical Relief; Board of Directors of Greater Detroit Area Health Council; Diplomat for the American Board of obstetrics/gynecology and the Wayne State Medical Society. He was active in his church and a member of the Golden Key Club, Farmington Community Lions Club and, later, the Traverse City Lions Club.
      In 1988 he retired from active practice and moved to Traverse City with his wife, Eugenia. Bill loved life and all that it had to offer. He enjoyed many outdoor sports, gardening and playing trumpet in his own band. The source of his greatest joy, however, was his family.
      Survivors include his wife, Eugenia; three sons, Paul of Traverse City, David of East Lansing, and Daniel of Lansing; two sisters, Frances Anderson of Cleveland, and Helen Heyl of Osprey, Fla.; a special cousin, Elizabeth Owen of Osprey, Fla.; and seven grandchildren.
      Bill was preceded in death by his eldest son, William Thomas Unkefer Jr. in 1997, and his parents.
      Cremation has taken place. A memorial service and celebration of Bill's life will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, May 15, at The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Homer Nye will officiate.
      In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to The Presbyterian Church, Munson Hospice, or the Christian Medical and Dental Society.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Agnes E. Van
      Died May 1, 1999
      RAPID CITY - Agnes E. Van, 79, of Rapid City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Agnes, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska and Antrim counties, was a retired bus driver for the Kalkaska public schools. She was affiliated with the Rapid City Church of Christ and the Sunshine Guild. A member of the Rapid City Heritage Society, she also enjoyed volunteering for many activities. Agnes' hobbies included playing cards, painting, crafts and her family.
      Born in Mancelona on Feb. 14, 1920, she was the daughter of John and Salla Hughey Henderson, On Nov. 11, 1937, in Mancelona, she married Herbert L. "Peanut" Van, who preceded her in death on July 13, 1990.
      Survivors include three sons, Richard (Margaret) Van, Herbert M. Van, and Edward G. Van; two daughters, Sally (James) Dunson and Rhonda Vasher; two brothers, Alton (Dolly) Henderson and Arvid "Zeke" (Pat) Henderson; a sister, Arthella (Carl) Hinds; 16 grandchildren, Cindy, Van, Jennifer, Sherri, Terri, Mark, Vickie, Tricia, Christine, Debbie, Becky, Dawn, Tina, Tara, James, and Bridgett; and 30 great-grandchildren.
      Agnes was also preceded in death by a son, Gregg, a brother, Arnold, and a sister, Alice.
      Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; Arvid "Zeke" Henderson will officiate. Burial will be in Clearwater Township Cemetery in Kalkaska County.
      Memorial contributions may be made to the Rapid City Station 5 Rescue Unit.
     
      SHARON DUNN, 34, of Kalkaska, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at her home. She was born June 10, 1964.
      Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the 1 p.m. funeral services Wednesday at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska.
     
      ARDELLA HOWARD, 82, died Friday, April 30, 1999, at her home in East Jordan. She was born Feb. 21, 1917.
      The family will receive friends from 5 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in East Jordan.
     
      WILLIAM 'BILL' JOHNS, 80, of Grayling, died Saturday, May 1, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Grayling. A retired meat cutter, he was born Aug. 9, 1918, in Rexton.
      Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Sorenson Funeral Home, McEvers Chapel, in Grayling.
     
      A memorial service for HARRY CARL LUND, will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Leland Methodist Church in Leland.
      Harry, who died Dec. 23, 1998, was a resident of Traverse City and the author and photographer of "Michigan Wildflowers."
      Interment was in Beechwood Cemetery. The Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City is in charge of arrangements.
      JOANNE E. (POMEROY) GATES, 46, of Manistee, died Tuesday, May 4, 1999, at her home.

      WILLIAMSBURG - John Francis Kocinski, 79, of Williamsburg, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born August 14, 1919, in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Samuel W. and Frances (Paczosa) Kocinski. John, a former clerk at Sceffer Collett Company, retired in 1975.
      He is survived by many special nieces and nephews and great-nieces and great-nephews.
      John was preceded in death by his mother, Frances, and a sister, Veronica Dauss.
      Visitation will take place from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; an evening prayer will be said at 7 p.m.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Sacred Heart Church in Elk Rapids. Father Zuchowski will officiate. Burial will follow at the Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

      Courtney Blaire Dorothea Fisher Cunic

      GRAND HAVEN - Courtney Blaire Dorothea Fisher Cunic, 20, passed away accidentally Sunday from injuries received in a house fire. Formerly of Paducah, Ky., Suttons Bay and Athens, she lived in Grand Haven for the past year-and-a-half.
      Born Oct. 26, 1978, in Battle Creek, to Randy and Marilyn (Fisher) Cunic, Courtney worked as a waitress at Goal Tenders and Russ' Restaurant and later at Johnson Controls in Holland.
      Courtney attended Paducah Community College and Muskegon Community College. She enjoyed long distance running, volleyball and music. Courtney spent much of her time traveling and meeting new people. She had a passion for writing and her works were published. She truly loved and was loved by her family and friends.
      She is survived by her parents and a sister, Jordan, all of Grand Haven.
      The family requests no visitation. A memorial service will be held at 1 p.m. today at the Van Zantwick Bartels Kammeraad Funeral Home at 620 Washington Street in Grand Haven. A private family interment will follow Thursday at the Burr Oak Cemetery in Athens.

      WILLIS - John Joseph "Jack" Murray Jr., 47, of Willis, died Sunday from injuries sustained in an automobile accident.
      He was born April 13, 1952, in Dearborn to John Joseph Sr. and Marion (Knight) Murray.
      Survivors include his mother, Marion, of Saline; two brothers, Philip (Marilyn) of Traverse City and Kevin (Ramona) of Northville; a sister, Rebecca (Moses) Trout of Milan; one uncle, William Knight; and his nieces and nephews, Amos, Jason, Gabrielle, Olivia, Renee and Nicholas.
      Visitation will be held from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday and 9 to 11 a.m. Saturday at the Ochalek-Stark Funeral Home in Milan. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday with Pastor Gordon Moore officiating.

      Cecilia M. (Shugart) Soenke

      TRAVERSE CITY - Cecilia M. (Shugart) Soenke, 89, of Toledo, Ohio, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday at St. Luke's Hospital in Maumee, Ohio.
      Born on Oct. 19, 1909, she was the daughter of Mert and Mame Gagnon. She was the loving wife of C. Ted Soenke.
      A lifelong homemaker, Cecilia was also a loving mother.
      Cecilia is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Deacon LeRoy and Nadji (Shugart) Houghton; grandchildren, Nina C. Houghton, Christina L. (Scott) Reynolds, Liana G. (Michael) Bomar, Trista E. (Mark) Young, and Royce M. (Lori) Houghton; and 11 great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband on June 26, 1997.
      Visitation will be from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Reeb Funeral Home, 5712 N. Main Street, Sylvania, Ohio. A rosary will be recited at 1:30 p.m. The Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Friday at St. Clement Catholic Church in Toledo, Ohio. Interment will take place at a later date in Arizona.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Glendine Grace Dodge, 73, of Traverse City, formerly of Dearborn, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born April 3, 1926, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Earl and Amanda (May) Hathaway. She married Alton S. Dodge on Nov. 22, 1950, in Elyra, Ohio.
      Glendine taught school for 30 years in Loraine, Ohio, and Detroit public schools. She moved to Traverse City in 1990 and became a member of East Bay Calvary Church.
      She is survived by one son, Charles A. (Donna) Dodge of Williamsburg; a brother, Morris Hathaway of Taylor; a sister, June Nay of Akron, Ohio; four grandchildren, Stephany Moritz, Stacey Nadeau, Shelly Durkin and Sherry Brehm; and two great-grandchildren, Patrick and Lauren Moritz.
      Glendine was preceded in death by her husband and her sisters, Virginia Johnson and Pauline Colvin.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

      Roger L. Eckhardt

      KALKASKA - Roger L. Eckhardt, 56, a lifelong resident of Kalkaska County, died Wednesday at his home.
      Born Dec. 14, 1942, he was the son of Roy and Catherine (O'Neal) Eckhardt. On Aug. 7, 1976, in Kalkaska County, he married Viva Rader.
      Roger was a graduate of Kalkaska High School and owned and operated Roger's Body Shop for many years. He was later employed by Dowell Division of Dow Chemical Company. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge and the Eagles Lodge of Grayling. His hobbies were hunting and fishing.
      He is survived by his wife; a son, Bradley (Traci) Eckhardt of Charlevoix; a daughter, Kimberly (Mark) Brooks of Aurora, Colo.; two step-children; a sister, Joyce (Gordon) Driescens of Yuma, Ariz.; three grandchildren; and four step-grandchildren.
      Friends may call from 1 to 9 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday. Pastor David Rosenberg will officiate. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kalkaska.

      LELAND - Andrew W. Kiessel, 90, of East Leland, died Thursday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      Born May 3, 1909, in Suttons Bay, he was the son of Charles and Martha (Tatch) Kiessel. On April 10, 1937, in Suttons Bay, he married Martha Swanson.
      Andrew, a farmer, was a member of Immanuel Lutheran Church in Leland. He thoroughly loved his family and friends and enjoyed playing cards.
      He is survived by his wife; five children, Ivan (Darlene) Kiessel of St. Joseph, Shirley (Ralph) Kahrs of Traverse City, Marcella (Dale) Morrison of McMillen, Nancy Kiessel of Traverse City, and David (Sharon) Kiessel of Stevensville; two brothers, Rufus Kiessel of Central Lake and Clifford Kiessel of Suttons Bay; 16 grandchildren and 22 great-grandchildren.
      Andrew was preceded in death by his daughter, Alice Busby; six brothers, Carl, Edward, Raymond, Albert, Frank and Lloyd; and one sister, Martha Brown.

      David Averill
      Died May 7, 1999
      WESTLAND - David Averill, 87, of Westland, formerly of Traverse City, died Friday.
      Born on Sept. 5, 1911, in Flint, he was the son of Roy Weston Averill and Lyssa Etta (Phipps) Averill.
      Educated in the public schools of Flint and Detroit, at 17 he enlisted in the U.S. Navy from which he was honorably discharged at the age of 21. During World War II he served briefly in the U.S. Merchant Marine.
      Averill spent 40 years in various phases of the communications media, most of it in newspaper journalism. He also worked in radio broadcasting and sales in Detroit and Ann Arbor, and as an advertising copy writer at a Detroit agency.
      In the 1950's he was a reporter for the weekly Dearborn Guide, later becoming its associate editor. He served as editor of the Ypsilanti Press, a daily, from 1960 to 1962. He then went to Eastern Michigan University as a director of publications and news services. He left in 1966 to re-enter radio work at an Ann Arbor station.
      Later he decided to complete his education by entering Wayne State University from which he graduated with a bachelor's degree in English literature and European history.
      In 1968 he and his wife, Marie, purchased the widely known Solle's Book Store in Omena, converting it into a home in 1969 after moving permanently to the Leelanau County community from Ann Arbor.
      David was employed by the Traverse City Record-Eagle in 1970 where he served in various editorial positions. He was a reporter, feature writer, columnist and editorialist. He retired in 1981.
      In recent years he and his wife have spent summers in their Traverse City home and winters in Georgia until moving to Westland in October.
      He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Kay (Lester) Walker of Livonia, Sheila Fryer and Betsy Ann (Paul) Speen, both of Garden City; eleven grandchildren; eighteen great-grandchildren and one great-great grandchild.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant son, Robert Roy.
      Cremation has taken place. There will be no funeral or memorial service.

      Herman F. Cornelissen
      Died May 5, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Herman F. Cornelissen, 60, of Elk Rapids, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born on June 17, 1938, in Detroit, he was the son of Gerard and Nellie (Matthee) Cornelissen. Herman moved from Frasier to Elk Rapids in 1964. On May 30, 1964, he married Roberta "Bobbie" Spencer at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids.
      He served in the U.S. Army and prior to retiring in January, Herman owned and operated the Elk Rapids Insurance Agency for 32 years. He was a member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, the Men's Club, and the Elk Rapids Golf Club. He enjoyed golfing, playing cards and traveling.
      Herman is survived by his wife; two sons, Mark (Jennifer) Cornelissen of Cincinnati, Ohio and Paul Cornelissen of Los Angeles, Calif.; two daughters, Martha Cornelissen of Fort Wayne, Ind. and Melinda (Michael) Burton of Midland; his mother; one sister, Mary (Sam) Chile of Elk Rapids; two brothers, Gerard (Joyce) Cornelissen of Fort Wayne, Ind. and William (Roberta) Cornelissen of Washington Township; and four grandchildren, Zackary, Alex, Peter and Emily.
      He was preceded in death by his father.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids, where Evening Prayer from the Order of Christian Funerals will be at 7 p.m. Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski and the Rev. Paul Megge will concelebrate. Burial will follow at the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Kewadin.

      William Howard DeLorme
      Died February 13, 1999
      INTERLOCHEN - William Howard DeLorme, 86, passed away Feb. 13 at Tendercare Traverse City after a long illness.
      Born April 13, 1912, in Detroit, he was the son of Joseph L. and Pauline (Kratochvil) DeLorme. In 1935, in Royal Oak, he married Marcella M. Lang.
      He was a very gifted craftsman who worked with wood and clay to create patterns for the automobile industry in Detroit.
      After moving "Up North," he served the Karlin and lnterlochen communities in a multitude of functions that included supervisor of Green Lake Township and president of the Lions Club. He was also a member of the Green Lake Township Volunteer Fire Department, the Red Cross, the Interlochen Chamber of Commerce and the Golden Fellowship. Many will remember his happy face during the summers he worked as the harbormaster for the Elmwood Township Port Authority.
      He is survived by his wife; three children, Howard, Sandra, and William; four brothers, Joseph, Charles, George, and Julius "Dan"; their families; five grandchildren; great-grandsons; and many nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Albert.
      A memorial service will be held at 11:30 a.m. Saturday, May 15, at the Golden Fellowship Hall (next to the Interlochen Public Library on Riley Road) in Interlochen; Father Micketti will officiate. Family and friends are welcome. Arrangements are by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

      OCEAN SPRINGS, Miss. - Fern Winona (Emery) Moulton, 90, died April 9 in Ocean Springs where she had lived since 1984. She was a former resident of Traverse City.
      Born Dec. 30, 1908, in Burke, S.D., she was the daughter of Hattie and Samuel Emery of Grawn, Mich. Fern was the widow of James C. Moulton of Traverse City.
      Surviving are a son, Richard W. Emery of Ocean Springs; three sisters, Ileen Graham of Traverse City, Rita Conkright of Gaylord, Mich., and Janell Campbell of Antioch, Calif.; nine grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.
      Interment will take place at a future date in St. Mary's Cemetery in Hannah, Mich.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Zachary J. Andrus, 19, of Traverse City, died Friday.
      Born June 5, 1979, in Traverse City, he was the son of Jon F. Andrus and H. Janine (Sladek) Andrus.
      Zachary graduated from the Traverse City High School in 1997 and was a part-time student at Northwestern Michigan College. He was a chef at Mabel's Restaurant and had worked at Minerva's. He loved fishing, hunting and live action role playing.
      He is survived by his parents; a brother, Ben Andrus; maternal grandparents, Raymond and Bobbie Sladek; paternal great-grandmother, H. Opal Holley; his girlfriend, Erica Heit, all of Traverse City; and many uncles, aunts and cousins.
      Zachary was preceded in death by his paternal grandparents, Bud and Bessie Andrus.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City where. services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday with the Rev. Patrick Barrett officiating.

      Samuel L. Buck
      Died May 7, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Samuel L. Buck, 93, of Traverse City, formerly of Rapid City, died Friday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 12, 1905, in Metamora, Ohio, he was the son of William and Meda (Foor) Buck. On July 15, 1957, he married Mary Andrus in Angola, Ind.
      Samuel was a Lt. Colonel in the Army and served in World War II. He later worked in Rapid City as Postmaster and retired in 1979. He was a member of the VFW Cherryland Post 2780.
      He is survived by his wife; a sister, Verna Stein of Toledo, Ohio; and many nieces and nephews.
      Samuel was preceded in death by three brothers, Earl, Dormey and Harold.
      No services are planned at this time.

      Charles E. Eckerman
      Died May 6, 1999
      KEWADIN - Charles E. Eckerman, 60, of Kewadin, formerly of Saginaw, died Thursday at home.
      Born June 2, 1938, in Saginaw, he was the son of Ernest F. and Catherine Mary (Shea) Eckerman. He married Susanne Strecker in Saginaw on July 30, 1960.
      Charles was a devoted family man. He taught at the Saginaw Township Community Schools for 35 years. He was also an assistant principal for 17 years. For 27 years. Charles spent his summers in the Kewadin area, becoming a full time resident in June, 1998. He enjoyed sailing, hunting, fishing and woodworking.
      He is survived by his wife; one daughter, Heidi Eckerman of Mt. Pleasant; two sons, Matt (Laurie) Eckerman of Midland and Robert (Carmelina) Eckerman of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Kaye (Henry) Snyder of Grand Junction, Colo.; a brother James (Marsha) Eckerman of Saginaw; and three grandchildren, Christopher, Megan and Scott.
      Charles was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
      Mass from the Order of Christian Funerals will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Elk Rapids. The Rev. Robert J. Zuchowski will be celebrant.

      Jerry T. McNitt

      MESICK - Jerry T. McNitt, 60, of Mesick, died Feb. 18 of cancer in Cape Canaveral, Fla.
      Born on Jan. 25, 1939, in Cadillac, he was the son of Gene and Margaret McNitt.
      Jerry was a retired business owner of McNitt Oil Company and McNitt Beef and Trout Farms. His hobbies included hunting, fishing and golfing; he spent his winters in Cocoa Beach, Fla.
      He is survived by his daughter, Narda (Michael) Hughson; son, Eric; mother, Margaret McNitt; sister, June Comstock; brother, Jeff McNitt; and his grandson, Lucas Hughson.
      A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, May 22, at the Antioch Cemetery in Antioch; the Rev. Lloyd Jewett will be officiating with speakers Dick Able and Tom Anderson. A luncheon will follow at the AMVETS Post No. 120 in Mesick.

      SAGINAW - Michael Gary Morse, 46, of Saginaw, formerly of Lapeer, died Friday at home.
      Born Nov. 9, 1952, in Traverse City, he was the son of Albert J and Mae A. (Weber) Morse. On June 15, 1989, in Saginaw, he married Patricia Franklin.
      Michael was employed by the Saginaw Community Mental Health Services for 19 years. He attended the First Congregational Church in Saginaw. He enjoyed fixing small appliances, liked gadgets and good food. He will be greatly missed by his family, friends and co-workers.
      He is survived by his wife; parents, Albert and Mae Morse of Traverse City, two brothers, Steven G. (Melinda) Morse of Newport News, Va.; and Charles A. Morse of Socorro, N.M.; many cousins, nieces and nephews; and a special friend and advocate, Cathy Shuler of Saginaw.
      Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City, where friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday. Burial will follow at the Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

      Tony was a St. Francis Catholic School graduate and served in the U.S. Air Force. He enjoyed fishing and biking.

      Vivian J. Bassett
      Died April 18, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Vivian J. Bassett, 70, of Traverse City, died Sunday, April 18, at home.
      Born March 21, 1929, in Akron, Ohio, she was the daughter of Neel and Maggie (Stauffer) Hedden. She moved to Michigan in 1937 and to the Traverse City area in 1980.
      Vivian was a 1947 graduate of Melvindale High School where she was class president. Voted most likely to become the first U.S. woman president by her peers, she loved people and was well respected. A working mother, in 1980 she received her bachelor's degree in education from Madonna University. She was a teacher in the Redford and Livonia public schools.
      She enjoyed teaching, camping, reading, gardening and traveling. Spending summers and entertaining at her cottage on Lake Leelanau was her special joy. She was an active member of Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City, Natvity United Church of Christ in Livonia, the Livonia Weekenders, Michigan Education Association and Elderwise.
      Vivian was a loving wife, mother and grandmother. A great communicator, gracious friend and hostess; she will truly be missed.
      She is survived by her husband of 48 years, William; sons, William (Laurie) Jr. of Williamsburg and Jonathan (Cheryl) of Jackson; brothers, Dean Hedden, Dale Hedden; sister, Lila Balint; her grandchildren include Landon, Wesley, Patricia, Kaitlyn and Sarah Bassett.

      Robert N. Parkes
      Died May 8, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Robert N. Parkes, 82, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Sept. 25, 1916, in Flushing, N.Y., he was the son of George H. and Esther J. (Bailey) Parkes. On Feb. 10, 1946, in Traverse City, he married Ida M. Harris.
      Robert served in the U.S. Navy during World War II in the Marshall Islands. A retired butcher and meat salesman, he had been employed with Tannehill & DeYoung Wholesale Meat Co. and A & P Food Stores. Robert had been a resident of Traverse City since 1946 and was a member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. A life member of the Traverse City Elks Club, he was also a member of The Do Nuthin Bunch at the Elks Club. Robert enjoyed golf, gardening and yard work.
      Survivors include his wife, Ida of Traverse City; a son, Robert E. Parkes of Port Orange, Fla.; two grandchildren, Kimberly and Kelly; four great-grandchildren; two nieces; and a nephew.
      Robert was preceded in death by his parents and two brothers, George, in 1967, and Edward, this year.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; the Rev. William Haggard will officiate. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

      Bill, a physician, was 76 when he died April 24 at his home in Traverse City.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Vivian J. Bassett, 70, of Traverse City and Livonia, died Sunday, April 18, at her home in Livonia.

      Donald A. Ferguson
      Died April 26, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Donald A. "Don" Ferguson, 66, of Traverse City, died Monday, April 26, at the Cleveland Clinic in Cleveland, Ohio.
      Born Feb. 26, 1933, in Detroit, he was the son of Eldon and Bernice (Bodine) Ferguson.
      Don was raised in Fowlerville and graduated from high school there in 1950. He served in the U.S. Army from 1954 to 1956. Don attended Michigan State University and graduated in 1957 with a bachelor of science degree in geology. He married Donna Jean Hemstreet, who survives, in 1957 and they had two sons, Jeffrey - who lives in Washington D.C. with his wife, Carol, and their two sons, Alexander and Andrew - and Gregory, who lives in Traverse City.
      Don was well known and respected in the oil and gas industry for his work which was primarily in oil and gas drilling and exploration. His professional career included positions with the Michigan State Highway Department from 1958 to 1962, Consumers Power Co. from 1962 to 1980 and Total Petroleum, Inc. from 1980 to 1989. He started Donald A. Ferguson Consulting in 1989. Don retired in December 1998 and was able to spend time in Washington D.C. and North Carolina with his family. He was a member of the American Petroleum Institute, the Michigan Oil and Gas Association and Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City.
      Memorial services will be held at noon Saturday at Central United Methodist Church; the Rev. Dean Bailey will officiate.

      JACKSONVILLE, Fla. - Helen Baird Fowler, 83, passed away Thursday, May 6, at Manor Care Nursing Home in Jacksonville.
      Helen was a member of the Federal Reserve Association and was also a former musician.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Clifford Fowler, but is survived by many cousins.
      Interment will be in Marietta National Cemetery in Marietta, Ga.

      E.W. 'Mike' Reid
      Died May 8, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - E.W. "Mike" Reid, 71, of Traverse City, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born May 5, 1928, in Highland Park, he was the son of E.W. Reid Sr. and Dailey (Clymer) Reid. On April 26, 1958, in Allen Park, he married Eleanor J. Warner.
      Mike served as a sergeant with the U.S. Army in World War II. A resident of Traverse City for 26 years, he was previously of Livonia. In 1989 he retired from his position as manager of corporate affairs with Ameritech. Mike was active in Kiwanis, the Salvation Army, Telephone Pioneers and United Way and volunteered for many other charitable organizations. He enjoyed playing golf and was very active in the lives of his children and grandchildren.
      Survivors include his wife, Eleanor of Traverse City; three children, Michael (Kathleen) Reid of Troy, Judith (Daniel) Druskovich of Traverse City, and Susann Reid (fianc‚, Jon Elliott) of Grand Rapids; four grandchildren, Steven and Ashley Reid and Michael and Christina Druskovich; his mother-in-law, Clara Kidder of Allen Park, his brother-in-law, Arthur (Marjorie) Warner Sr. of Florida; a niece; and a nephew.
      Friends may call at the time of service which will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.

      FRANKFORT - William R. Strom, 59, formerly of Frankfort and California, and most recently a resident of Topeka, Kan., died Thursday, April 8, in the Colmery-O'Neil VA Medical Center in Topeka.
      Born Sept. 24, 1939, in Frankfort, he was the son of Adella (Strom) Sandborg of Frankfort.
      Survivors include his mother, Adella; a brother, Peter Peterson of Naples, Fla.; a sister, Andrea Perry of Frankfort; and a niece, Ronda Kochis.
      William was preceded in death by his stepfather, Gordon Sandborg, a sister, Margaret Dobson, and a nephew, Christian Perry.
      Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Lutheran Cemetery in Crystal Lake Township; Pastor Rick Stieve of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort will officiate.

      Born Nov. 5, 1933, in Pontiac, she moved to the Gaylord area in 1986.
      She was the beloved wife of Philip, who survives, Also surviving are three sons; Michael D. (Sandy), Stephen G. (Cynthia), and John C. (Roxanne); six grandchildren; and a brother, David M. (Linda) Fries.
      Betty was preceded in death by two brothers; two sisters; and one granddaughter.

      Hanni Emilie Morenz
      Died May 9, 1999
      CEDAR - Hanni Emilie Morenz, 85, of Cedar, died Sunday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      Born Sept. 13, 1913, in Neumittelwalde, Schlesien, Germany, she was the daughter of Eugen and Agnes (Weinert) Ulbrich. On Dec. 9, 1961, in Ann Arbor, she married Rudy Bruno Morenz.
      Hanni volunteered hundreds of hours at Ann Arbor Veterans Administration Hospital. In 1979, Hanni and Rudy moved from Ann Arbor to "Their Paradise" in Cedar.
      She was preceded in death by her husband - on May 6, 1996, her parents and two brothers.
      Graveside services will be announced at a later date. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery in Omena.

      ELK RAPIDS - Mary R. Thomas, 107, of Elk Rapids and Sterling Heights, died Saturday, April 3, at Shelby Nursing Center in Shelby Township.
      Born Dec. 28, 1891, in Elk Rapids, she was the daughter of Urlick and Mary (Pheiffer) Remming. In 1911 she married John Earl Thomas in Elk Rapids.
      She was a homemaker and spent the past year in Shelby Township. For 25 years she spent winters in Mount Dora, Fla. and summers in Sterling Heights and Elk Rapids. She was a former member of Christian German Reformed Church in Elk Rapids and a former member of Elk Rapids Garden Club. She enjoyed gardening, knitting and crocheting.
      She is survived by a daughter, A. Marie Thomas of Shelby Township; two sons, John Thomas of Sterling Heights, and James (Janice) Thomas of Ocala, Fla.; and one grandson, James (Donna) Thomas II of Harrah, Okla.
      Mary was preceded in death by her husband, in 1932, and parents.
      Graveside services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Mary J. Buckey, 75, of Traverse City died Tuesday at the home of her daughter in Traverse City.
      The Angel of the Lord took Mary's hand and escorted her to heaven with the peace of her family around her. Born Feb. 13, 1924, in Chicago, Ill., she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Gaynelle (Huntley) Haley. On July 20, 1940, she married Harold Vernon Buckey at St. Brigid Church in Midland. She attended St. Brigid Church and the First Baptist Church of Traverse City.
      She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Harold; her four children and their spouses, Timothy (Stephanie) Buckey of Caseville, Richard (Janet) Buckey of Midland, Ruth (Mike) Albee of Midland, and Barbara (Patrick) Tewart of Traverse City; a brother, William (Harriett) Haley; two sisters, Lila Mae Stark and Frances Thiel; 12 grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her son, Joe Allen Buckey; grandson, Aaron Samuel Buckey; granddaughter, Christie Buckey; a brother, Thomas Haley; and a sister, Patricia Kidder.
      Mary's family will receive friends from 11 a.m. today until the time of service which will be held at 2 p.m. at the Ware-Smith-Woolever Funeral Chapel, 1200 W. Wheeler St., Midland; with the Rev. Thomas Mansfield of the First Baptist Church of Traverse City officiating. Burial will take place in the Homer Township Cemetery.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Edward F. Schulz, 79, of Traverse City, died Monday at home.
      Born June 20, 1919, in Detroit, he was the son of Leo F. and Christianne (Menzel) Schulz. On Aug. 13, 1949, in Detroit, he married Charlotte Eby.
      A retired distributor of Dor-O-Matic of Michigan, he was also a former employee of Old Kent Bank. Edward was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army-Air Force. He was also a graduate of the Ford Trade School and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City.
      He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Judith (Robert) Cochran of Livonia, Barbara (Donald) Swindlehurst of Sterling Heights, and Carol (Donald) Bakke of Grawn; seven grandchildren, Adam, Daniel, Christina, Kenneth, Michael, Teresa, and Crystal; and a sister, Helen Rachwitz of Traverse City.
      Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Schulz.
      Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Donald V. Engebretson and the Rev. C. Jay Koehler will officiate. Burial will be in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia.

      Agnetta M. Steinmiller
      Died May 11, 1999
      GRAWN - Agnetta M. Steinmiller, 88, of Grawn, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born in Mayfield Township on Nov. 21, 1910, she was the daughter of the late Christopher and Mary (Kummer) Weber. On May 18, 1936, at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church, in Kingsley, she married August Raymond Steinmiller.
      A homemaker, Agnetta worked with her husband for many years on the farm which they had owned since 1938. She also had worked at Munson Medical Care Facility. Agnetta enjoyed her family, flower gardens, birds and baking and cooking - especially homemade apple pies and glazed donuts. She was a member of St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church.
      She is survived by her husband; two sons, James (Maxine) Steinmiller of Monroe Center and Roger (Joyce) Steinmiller of Plymouth; one daughter, Romona (William) Crain of Grawn; one sister, Rodetta Michels of Traverse City; a brother, William (Loretta) Weber of Hannah; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; three sisters, Theresa Mikros, Alma Schmidt and Romana Hansen; and four brothers, Joseph, Bernard, Julius and Edmund Weber.
      Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends and relatives from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley where a Service of Remembrance will be held at 7 p.m. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's of Hannah Catholic Church with the Rev. Albin Gietzen officiating.

      Kenneth E. Knecht
      Died May 12, 1999
      INTERLOCHEN - Kenneth E. Knecht, 79, of Interlochen, died Wednesday, May 12, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born June 23, 1919, in Cadillac, he was the son of Andrew Jackson and Mary Emily (Smith) Knecht. On Feb. 21, 1941, in Zenith, Ohio, he married Ardith McKibben.
      Kenneth was the youngest of 13 children born to Andrew and Mary. He was a lifelong member of the Seventh Day Adventist Church. Youth held a special place in Kenneth's heart. From 1953 to 1967 he and his family lived in the Orlando area and, as a builder, he constructed over 100 homes there.
      Survivors include his wife of 58 years, Ardith, of Interlochen; a daughter, Evelene Casey of Interlochen; a son, Marvin (Reta) Knecht of Interlochen; three sisters, Grace Wery of Wilson, Gladys Knecht of Groveland, Fla., and Frances Jewett of Berrien Springs; a brother, Bernath Knecht of Pataskala, Ohio; four grandchildren, Virginia Wood, Christine Holmes, Charles Knecht, and Michael Knecht; and three great-grandchildren, Garrett Wood, Conner Wood and Chase Knecht.
      Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents and eight brothers and sisters.
      A memorial service will be held at 4 p.m. Saturday at the Pathfinder Building on Lamb Road in Interlochen. Burial will be in Inland Township Cemetery "where he peacefully awaits the resurrection at the second coming of our Lord, Jesus Christ."

      Brian K. Pike
      Died May 12, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Brian K. Pike, 25, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Dec. 14, 1973, in Traverse City, he was the son of Otha and Naomi (Diehl) Pike.
      On Oct. 12, 1997, in Traverse City, he married Carrie Bennetts.
      A lifelong resident of Traverse City, he was a graduate of Traverse City High School. Brian had been employed by Tile Mart for the past year and previously worked as a salesperson for ABC Warehouse for six years.
      Survivors include his wife, Carrie, of Traverse City; his parents; two brothers, Gary (Rose) Pike of Orlando, Fla., and Dan (Linda) Pike of Tecumseh.
      The family will greet friends from 9 a.m. until the time of memorial services which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; Laurence DuCheney will officiate.

      Edward F. Schulz
      Died May 10, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Edward F. Schulz, 79, of Traverse City, died Monday at home.
      Born June 20, 1919, in Detroit, he was the son of Leo F. and Christianne (Menzel) Schulz. On Aug. 13, 1949, in Detroit, he married Charlotte Eby.
      A retired distributor of Dor-O-Matic of Michigan, he was also a former employee of Old Kent Bank. Edward was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army-Air Force. He was also a graduate of the Ford Trade School and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City.
      He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Judith (Robert) Cochran of Livonia, Barbara (Donald) Swindlehurst of Sterling Heights, and Carol (Donald) Bakke of Grawn; seven grandchildren, Adam, Daniel, Christina, Kenneth, Michael, Teresa, and Crystal; and a sister, Helen Rachwitz of Traverse City.
      Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Schulz.
      Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday, May 24, at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Donald V. Engebretson and the Rev. C. Jay Koehler will officiate. Burial will be in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia.

      Karen Anne (Leach) Whitmer
      Died May 12, 1999
      SHERMAN - Karen Anne (Leach) Whitmer, 56, of Sherman, died Wednesday at her home.
      Born Sept. 6, 1942, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Ernest C. and Lillian Mae (O'Brien) Purkiss. Karen married Beverly "Plug" Whitmer 10 years ago at the Washington D.C. temple of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
      Originally from Traverse City, Karen lived in Virginia for the last 10 years, returning to live in Sherman in February. She was a member of the Cadillac branch of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints and a former member of the Traverse City and Woostock wards. Karen's greatest love was quilting and she was a member of the Belle Grove Quilters Guild in Virginia. She also enjoyed baking and gardening. Karen was a loving mother and grandmother.
      Survivors include her husband, "Plug"; her children, Margaret (Clarence) Bodkin of New Mexico, Lance (Patty) Leach of Maple City, Lonnie (Connie) Leach of Dayton, Ohio, Sherry (Steve) Porter of Mesick, Larry (Lisa) Leach of Maple City, and Kim (Mark) Langston of Eugene, Ore.; her brothers and sisters, Brenda (Albert) Decker, DuWayne Purkiss, Linda Powell, and Judy Hitt - all of Mesick; her stepchildren, David (Holly) Whitmer of Delaware and Kim (Tate) Simmons of North Carolina; her sister-in-law, Elaine Brown of Traverse City; 18 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

      NORTHPORT - Christena P. Wilcox, 95, of Northport, died Tuesday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      Born Dec. 25, 1903, in Gills Pier, she was the daughter of Wencel and Mary (Sedlacek) Korson. On June 23, 1928, in Detroit, she married Claude Wilcox.
      A homemaker, Christena had been a resident of Northport for 65 years. She was a charter member of St. Gertrude's Catholic Church Altar Society and an avid gardener. Christena loved her grandchildren.
      Survivors include four children, Patricia (Milton) Vingsness of Suttons Bay, Barbara (Richard) Mervau of West Hills, Calif., Robert (Sharon) Wilcox of Grand Junction, Colo., and Kathleen (James) Kelly of Alpena; a sister, Emma Korson of Suttons Bay; 28 grandchildren; 58 great-grandchildren; and nine great-great-grandchildren.
      Christena was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1980; three children, Betty Lou, Dorothy, and Charles; a great-grandson, Chad Sulzmann; and six brothers and sisters.

      Irene worked at Standale Home Furnishings for 25 years in the drapery business.
      She is survived by her children, Gary Stephens, Lurene (Bill) Priest, Stephen (Debbie) Stephens, Rick (Vicki) Stephens, Maxine (Jerry) Scherbinski; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry (Glennis) Umlor of Three Rivers; and a sister, Dolores (Stan) Swanson of Traverse City.
      Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Mary (Mikowski) Umlor; first husband, Max Stephens; second husband, Ross Blish; and a brother, Leon Umlor.
      Interment was held in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
     
      Edmond N. Cicotte
      Died May 13, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Edmond N. Cicotte, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born June 12, 1910, in Harvey, Ill., he was the son of Edmond A. and Matilda (Tallaksen) Cicotte. On April 11, 1931, in Trenton, he married Muriel W. Smith.
      He worked at Ford Motor Car as a production control manager for 38 years and retired in 1968. Edmond lived in the Traverse City area since 1996 moving from Big Blue Lake where he had lived for 28 years. He was very active in the Grayling Game Club for 30 years and was on the planning board of Blue Lake Township for 25 years. Edmond enjoyed fishing, hunting and boating. He traveled to Alaska to fish and when he was in his 70's, twice sailed in the Port Huron to Mackinac Race. He loved and took a special interest in all of his family.
      He is survived by his wife, Muriel; son, Edmond B. (Elizabeth) Cicotte of Utica; and a daughter, Jil G. Rose of Kalkaska.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers, Arthur and George Cicotte; and a grandson, Thomas Rose.
      Visitation will be held from 11 to 1 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City where funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. with the Rev. Larry Ross officiating.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Sue Ann (Herald) Schaub, 45, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions following a long battle with Multiple Sclerosis.
      Born March 12, 1954, she was the daughter of Albert "Bill" and Florence (Thayer) Herald. On June 22, 1974, she married Anthony "Tony" Schaub.
      Sue's greatest joy was her family and creating crafts and playing cards.
      She is survived by her parents; husband; daughter, Amanda; brother, Thomas (Sally) Herald; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews, including a special niece Sara Heinrich.

      Walter J. Stowe

      SUTTONS BAY - Walter J. Stowe, 91, of Suttons Bay, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 30, 1908, in Suttons Bay Township, he was the son of Edward and Anna (Rosa) Stowe. On March 25, 1930, in Suttons Bay, he married Ellen Elizabeth Swanson who passed away Dec. 6, 1953. On July 16, 1955, in Suttons Bay, he married Mary Barbara Pobuda who passed away Nov. 1, 1996.
      A farmer, he also worked for Flushwood Door Company and Leelanau County Road Commission. He was a member of Suttons Bay Congregational Church.
      Walter is survived by a daughter, Delores (William) Couturier of Morley; son, Douglas W. (Beatress) Stowe of Traverse City; stepson, Ludwig (Ruth) Moe of Waterford; stepdaughter, Mary Alice (Gerald) Herman of Suttons Bay; 22 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren; and 3 great-great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his first and second wife; a stepson, James Moe; stepdaughter, Carol Livingston; five brothers; two sisters; and a great-grandson, Mitchell Montoya.

      James W. 'Bill' Loper
      Died May 14, 1999
      CENTRAL LAKE - James W. "Bill" Loper, 101, of Central Lake, died Friday at Bortz Health Care of Petoskey.
      Born Dec. 24, 1897, in Quincy, Ky., he was the son of Charles and Clara (Anderson) Loper. On March 13, 1935, in Ann Arbor, he married Caroline Hinton.
      He lived in Central Lake most of his life and for over 30 years he owned and operated Loper's Garbage Service. He previously worked for the Central Lake Canning Factory, the Smallegan and Smith Grocery Store in Central Lake, and for Hoover Ball Bearing in Ann Arbor.
      Bill is survived by his daughter, Clarabelle Loper; a brother, Bernard (Mary) Loper; a sister, May Loper; and a granddaughter, Caroline Loper, all of Central Lake.
      He was preceded in death by his wife; son, Thomas; two grandsons, Jim and Bill Loper; three brothers, Jack, Tuff and Earl; and a sister, Emma Riplow.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with the Rev. Estel Clark officiating. Interment will be in Southern Cemetery in Central Lake Township.

      Marian Helen Sinn
      Died May 14, 1999
      OLD MISSION - Marian Helen Sinn, 74, of Old Mission, died Friday at Tendercare of Gaylord.
      Born Feb. 2, 1925, in Flint, she was the daughter of Harry and Helen (Heenan) Brittain. She later married Edward Sinn in Flint.
      Marian vacationed in this area as a child before moving here permanently in 1966. She lived for her family. She enjoyed watching TV, plants, animals, listening to music and flowers.
      She is survived by her children; Daniel Sinn of Johannesburg, Joanne Sinn of Traverse City, Karen (Dennis) Bee of Old Mission, Maryann Johnson of Traverse City; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one brother, Jack Brittain of Old Mission.
      She was preceded in death by her husband and a granddaughter, Jennifer.

      Francis A. 'Pete' Taylor
      Died May 14, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Francis A. "Pete" Taylor, 87, of Traverse City, died Friday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born Jan. 8, 1912, in Crandalls Mill, he was the son of William M. and Esther S. (Ayers) Taylor. On June 20, 1936, he married Mary G. Weber who preceded him in death on July 30, 1987.
      Pete was a resident of Traverse City area all of his life. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and worked at Sheffer Collet for 29 years before retiring in 1974. He enjoyed music and played several instruments by ear. Pete enjoyed entertaining his grandchildren by playing them songs on the organ. He was a great outdoors man and enjoyed fishing, hunting and loved his dog. He also loved his flowers in his flower garden. He was a member of the Senior Citizens Center and the Eagles.
      He is survived by his children, Carol A. (David) Ketner of Colorado, Phyllis M. (Richard) Gertz of Traverse City, Daniel M. Taylor of Traverse City, Robert E. Taylor of Traverse City, Larry F. (Norene) Taylor of Florida; 17 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; a sister, Lorretta (DeVet) Johnson of Greenville; a brother, Kenneth (Georgia) Taylor of Florida and a half brother, Lee (Kay) Hoy of Traverse City.
      Besides his wife, he was preceded in death by an infant sister; brothers, Harold, Fred and George Taylor; and a sister, Mildred Weber.

      Donald B. 'Don' Ferguson
      Died May 15, 1999
      EMPIRE - Donald B. "Don" Ferguson, 70, of Empire, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Dec. 30, 1928, in Detroit, he was the son of Benjamin and Alice (Flaska) Ferguson. On Jan. 19, 1953, he married Doris E. Baker.
      Don was a Dearborn police officer and the owner of B & D Screw Machine Products in Detroit. Moving to Traverse City in 1974, he became owner of the James R. Johnson CASE tractor dealership in Empire which he operated from 1975 to 1988. Don served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War and was a lifetime member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2780 and past commander and member of VFW Empire Post No. 2262. A longtime sponsor and supporter of youth hockey, he helped organize and served as team manager of the first Traverse City Trojan hockey team.
      Don is survived by his wife, Doris of Empire; two sons, David Ferguson of Empire and Dan (Kathy) Ferguson of Interlochen; a daughter, Kathleen Paulson of Traverse City; and three granddaughters, Becky and Heather Paulson and Jessica Ferguson.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
      Visitation will continue from noon until time of services which will be held at 1 p.m. Tuesday at Empire United Methodist Church; the Rev. Will McDonald will officiate.

      Felicia Sophia Prusick
      Died May 15, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Felicia Sophia Prusick, 82, of Traverse City, died Saturday at her son's home in Traverse City.
      Born June 18, 1916, in Milwaukee, Wis., she was the daughter of the late John and Stella (Jaloszynska) Cieslak. She was raised in Cleveland, Ohio, and spent summers at the family cottage on Lake Leelanau. On June 1, 1940, she married Vincent J. Prusick in Cleveland.
      Felicia owned and operated the Golden Drumstick Restaurant in Suttons Bay during the early 1970s. She also worked at Sladeks Bakery and served as a volunteer at Munson Medical Center - both in Traverse City.
      She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Traverse City and was active in the Ecarius Variety Club for many years. Felicia enjoyed sewing, gardening and baking.
      She will be dearly missed by her four children, Anthea (Mike) Markusic of Beaver Falls, Pa., Linda (Dick) Brzezinski of Houston, Texas, Dr. Vincent (Paula) Prusick of Traverse City and Daniel (Alice) Prusick of Traverse City.
      She is also survived by nine grandchildren, Michelle Reed and Annthea Markusic of Beaver Falls, Lisa and Derek Brzezinski of Houston, and Ashley, Vince, Parker, Jared, and Christy Prusick of Traverse City; a sister, Laura Schumacher of Hollywood, Fla.; and a brother, Bernie Cieslak of Cleveland.
      Felicia was preceded in death by her husband in 1970; three brothers, Bill, Walter, and Frank Cieslak; and two sisters, Wanda Webster and Helen Sitko.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.

      Elizabeth H. Allen
      Died May 16, 1999
      NORTHPORT - Elizabeth H. Allen, 77, of Northport, died Sunday at Northport Long Term Care.
      Born Nov. 6, 1921, in Findley, Ohio, she was the daughter of Judson C. and Mary (Hahn) Siddall.
      A retired school teacher, Elizabeth was a former resident of Suttons Bay; she served as a substitute teacher at Leland High School and volunteered at the Leland public library. Elizabeth was also a prior resident of Toledo, Ohio, where she taught in Toledo's public schools.
      Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (Cameron) Lyon of Traverse City and Susan (Jerry) Bayer of Elizabeth, Colo.; a son, Richard (Nancy) Allen of Suttons Bay; and seven grandchildren.
      Friends may call at the time of memorial services which will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. The Rev. James Beadle will officiate.
      Cremation has taken place. Her cremains will be buried at Toledo Memorial Park at a later date.

      GRAND RAPIDS - Irene E. (Umlor) Blish, 63, of Grand Rapids, died Thursday, April 29.
      Irene worked in the drapery business at Standale Home Furnishings for 25 years.
      She is survived by her children, Gary Stephens, Lurene (Bill) Priest, Stephen (Debbie) Stephens, Rick (Vicki) Stephens, Maxine (Jerry) Scherbinski; nine grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; a brother, Larry (Glennis) Umlor of Three Rivers; a sister, Dolores (Stan) Swanson of Traverse City; a stepmother, Ida Umlor of Traverse City; a stepbrother, Andy (Joyce) Lundberg of Traverse City; a stepsister, Dorothy Lardie of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
      Irene was preceded in death by her parents, Clifford and Mary (Mikowski) Umlor; first husband, Max Stephens; second husband, Ross Blish; and a brother, Leon Umlor.
      Interment was held in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
     
      Paul F. Crockett
      Died May 16, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Paul F. Crockett, 82, died Sunday at Tendercare Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 9, 1917, in Lincoln, Ind., he was the son of David and Dessie (Turnpaugh) Crockett. On July 23, 1950, in Kokomo, Ind., he married Ruby Johnston.
      Paul was a resident of Traverse City since 1959 and was a former resident of Kokomo. He was a machinist and worked in that capacity for 43 years with Continental Steel, Union Carbide and Cone Drive Gear. He also owned and operated the Dick and Davy Crockett Resort on Long Lake with his wife, Ruby, from 1959 to 1965. Paul served in the European Theatre during World War II as first sergeant of the 3455th Ordnance in the U.S. Army. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2780 of Traverse City.
      Survivors include two sons, Richard (Janice) Crockett and Paul D. Crockett - both of Kingsley; three sisters, Margaret (Jack) Nelson of Kokomo, Stella Bargerhoff of California, and Patricia (Donald) Wolf of Peru, Ind.; a sister-in-law, Mariam Crockett of Galveston, Ind.; six grandchildren, Toni, David, Kristi, Jami, Kelly, and Carrie; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Paul was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and two sisters.
      Services are planned for a later date.

      Ruby Crockett

      TRAVERSE CITY - Ruby Crockett, 78, died Saturday at Tendercare Traverse City.
      Born July 16, 1920, in Russieville, Ind., she was the daughter of Orie and Edith (Ratcliff) Johnston. On July 23, 1950, in Kokomo, Ind., she married Paul F. Crockett.
      A resident of Traverse City since 1959, Ruby was formerly of Kokomo. She and her husband owned and operated the Dick and Davy Crockett Resort on Long Lake from 1959 to 1965. A homemaker, Ruby was also employed at Ace Hardware, Tom's Food Markets and Butternut Bakery.
      Survivors include two sons, Richard (Janice) Crockett and Paul D. Crockett - both of Kingsley; six grandchildren, Toni, David, Kristi, Jami, Kelly, and Carrie; three great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      Ruby was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

      Nina Risden Fulljames

      TRAVERSE CITY - Nina Risden Fulljames, 89, of Safford, Ariz., formerly of Whitehall, died Feb. 19.
      She was born March 20, 1909, in Crofton.
      Survivors include her sons, James (Betty) Risden of Wellston and Joe Risden of Tucson, Ariz.; daughters, Rozanne Durga of Whitehall and Virginia (Leon) Winckel of Safford; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Lois Cooley of Traverse City.
      Nina was preceded in death by her husbands, Sanford Risden and George Fulljames; a daughter, Lois; a granddaughter, Kelly Doughtery; and a son-in-law, Daniel Durga.

      Joyce Elaine Harp

      CEDAR - Joyce Elaine Harp, 68, of Cedar, died Wednesday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
      A homemaker, she was born Jan. 30, 1931, in Leelanau Township, the daughter of James and Alice (Kennoff) Anderson. In 1951, in Traverse City, she married Edmund Harp.
      Survivors include a daughter, Louise (Ray) Leyrer, and two grandchildren, Roy (Marie) and Jennifer Leyrer - all of Lansing; and a great-grandson, Samuel.
      Joyce was preceded in death by her husband, on Jan. 30, 1980; five brothers, Frederick, Norman, James, Robert and Milfred; and three sisters, Lucille, Phyllis, and Peggy.

      Clara Marie Lentz
      Died May 14, 1999
      FRANKFORT - Clara Marie Lentz, 85, of Frankfort, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Clara was born Oct. 11, 1913, in Copemish; she was the daughter of Edward and Emma (Potratz) Lentz. She had lived in Traverse City most of her life and worked at Burwood Industries. The last part of her life was spent in Benzie County where she worked at a motel, baby-sitting and other jobs.
      Clara's greatest loves were fishing, music and watching the Detroit Tigers baseball games. She enjoyed playing cards and Scrabble with her family and friends. Clara also enjoyed speaking German, visiting and sharing her love of the Lord with others.
      Survivors include a brother, Arthur of Honor, and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
      Clara was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Edward, Charles, Paul, and Henry Lentz; and three sisters, Emma Hart, and Alma and Ida - in infancy.
      Friends may call one hour prior to services which will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday from the Perry Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia; Pastor David Peterson of the Sovereign Grace Fellowship will officiate. Interment will be in Champion Hills Cemetery.

      Edward F. Schulz
      Died May 10, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Edward F. Schulz, 79, of Traverse City, died Monday at home.
      Born June 20, 1919, in Detroit, he was the son of Leo F. and Christianne (Menzel) Schulz. On Aug. 13, 1949, in Detroit, he married Charlotte Eby.
      A retired distributor of Dor-O-Matic of Michigan, he was also a former employee of Old Kent Bank. Edward was a veteran of World War II and served in the U.S. Army-Air Force. He was also a graduate of the Ford Trade School and a member of Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City.
      He is survived by his wife; three daughters, Judith (Robert) Cochran of Livonia, Barbara (Donald) Swindlehurst of Sterling Heights, and Carol (Donald) Bakke of Grawn; seven grandchildren, Adam, Daniel, Christina, Kenneth, Michael, Teresa, and Crystal; and a sister, Helen Rachwitz of Traverse City.
      Edward was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Arthur Schulz.
      Cremation has taken place. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Traverse City. The Rev. Donald V. Engebretson and the Rev. C. Jay Koehler will officiate. Burial will be in Glen Eden Lutheran Memorial Park in Livonia.

      R. Douglas Sias
      Died May 17, 1999
      MIDLAND - R. Douglas "Doug" Sias, 90, of Midland, died early Monday at MidMichigan Medical Center.
      The son of the late Herbert A. and Nora B. (Sinclair) Sias, he was born Feb. 3, 1909, in Midland where he was raised and educated. Doug graduated from Midland High School, Michigan State University and from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology where he studied noise and vibration control. On June 13, 1936, he married June E. Johnson in Angola, Ind.; June died March 5, 1992.
      Doug served with the U.S. Army during WW II. He served two years in the Army Corps of Engineers and 11 years with the Reserve Coastal Artillery. He worked for Dow Chemical Company as an engineer for 39 years. After retirement, in 1974, he moved to Traverse City and then returned to Midland in 1990.
      Doug was a member of the The Presbyterian Church of Traverse City, Tau Beta Pi-honorary Engineer Fraternity, the National Society of Professional Engineers and the Fireside Wanders. He was listed in "Who's Who in Michigan" in 1974.
      Doug is survived by two sons, Richard S. (Leanna) Sias of Renton, Wash., and James (Jean) Sias of Rochester, N.Y.; a daughter, Kay E. (Harry) Meyer of Sanford; seven grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
      Friends may call today from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Wilson MILLER Funeral Home, 4210 N. Saginaw Road, Midland.

      Violet M. Simmons
      Died Jan. 7, 1999
      EASTPORT - Violet M. Simmons, 84, of Eastport, died Jan. 7 in Bellaire.
      She was born in Detroit on July 14, 1914, to English parents Herbert and Edith Huntley. Violet had two brothers, Buddy, who died as a child, and John, an aviator who was killed in World War II.
      As a young person, she was a voracious reader, allowing her to graduate from high school two years before her class. Her enjoyment of fine literature continued throughout her lifetime.
      On May 25, 1940, Violet wed the late Thomas B. Simmons; they were married 58 years.
      In addition to being very literate, Violet was artistic in several different areas. She especially enjoyed working in watercolors, ceramics, and making silver jewelry.
      Her artistic flair and love of flowers found expression in her longtime association with and membership in the Ikebana Society. For years she volunteered in the schools through the PTA and high school parents club. Violet also served in several Detroit area hospitals as a Gray Lady.
      She is survived by her son, Thomas H.; her grandson, Brandon; and three nieces, Sandy Soule, Shelly Beyer, and Sybil Houghton.
      A remembrance breakfast will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at the family home, 5029 Old Park Road, Eastport, for adult friends and neighbors. Please RSVP, if possible, to John Berst at 599-2602.       KINGSLEY - Edith Irene Wuorenma, 82, of Kingsley, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 18, 1917, in Des Moines, Iowa, she was the daughter of William and Pearl (Miller) Burris. On Sept. 25, 1937, in Detroit, she married George Wuorenma.
      A homemaker, Edith had lived in Kingsley since 1973, prior to that she was a resident of Redford Township. She owned and operated the Seven Mile One Stop Party Store and also worked as a cashier at Weisner Brothers. Edith was a member of the Daughters of America, the Eagles Auxiliary of Traverse City and Kingsley United Methodist Church.
      Survivors include four children, Dona (Joe) Paavola of Port Charlotte, Fla., James (Phyllis) Wuorenma of Plymouth, Irene Willis of Traverse City, and Janice Wuorenma of Kingsley; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.
      Edith was preceded in death by her husband, George, on Aug. 12, 1991; her parents; two sisters, Mae Clark and Mary McCoullough; and three brothers, Sherman, Truman and Harry Burris.

      Evelyn Beukema

      MAPLE CITY - Evelyn (Timmer) Beukema, 76, of Maple City, passed away Monday in Traverse City.
      Evelyn, a former resident of Grand Rapids, worked for many years as a bookkeeper at Van Andel and Flikkema Chrysler-Plymouth. She was a member and past president of the Women's Auxiliary of the American Postal Workers Union, Grand Rapids local.
      Surviving are her children, Hank Beukema, Gordon Beukema, Laura Scheer, Roger (Joy) Beukema, and David (Kathy) Beukema; her grandchildren: Tim and Marianne Beukema, Amy DeKubber, Nicole Beukema, and Tony Scheer; and her great-grandchildren, Casey, Heather, Tyler and Lucas. She also leaves a helpful friend, Sharon Sutherland; her sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Edna Timmer, John and Madeline Beukema, Cora Herms, Pat Beukema, Eleanor Beukema, and Evelyn Beukema; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Harold Beukema, in 1991.

      Judy Ann Dreher
      Died May 17, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Judy Ann Dreher, of Traverse City, passed away Monday at her home after a courageous battle with ovarian cancer. She was born Judy Ann Eickenroth on June 16, 1947, in Traverse City, the daughter of Floyd and Angeline (Cozart) Eickenroth and had been a lifetime resident of Traverse City. Judy had been a customer service representative having been employed by Haggerty Marine Insurance of Traverse City and had been executive secretary for 15 years at Anchor Industries, Inc. Judy was a member of Asbury United Methodist Church and the church's choir. In years past, Judy volunteered her time at the Women's Resource Center.
      Judy is survived by her beloved family, her husband, Robert, whom she married Sept. 5, 1981, in Traverse City; her children, Jennifer L. Dreher of Traverse City, Kim Bucher of Marietta, Pa., and Jason D. Dreher and Jessica L. "Jessie" Dreher - both of Traverse City; her mother, Ann (Delbert) Corner of Traverse City; and her brothers, David (Sharon) Eickenroth and John (Lorna) Eickenroth - both of Kingsley.
      Judy was preceded in death by her father, Floyd Eickenroth, in 1979.
      Services celebrating Judy's life will be held at Asbury United Methodist Church Friday, beginning at noon with the Rev. William Haggard officiating.

      BIRMINGHAM - Mary (Jean) Montgomery, of Pleasant Ridge died Monday at her home.
      She is survived by her husband of 59 years, Raoul Montgomery Sr.; her daughters, Judith Onthank and Nancy Cassell; and her son, Buck Montgomery. Mary was blessed with six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren who also survive.
      Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Wm. R. Hamilton Co., 820 E. Maple, Birmingham.

      MARSHALL - Mildred Elizabeth (Mulrooney) Galloway, 82, of Marshall, formerly of Traverse City, died Wednesday, May 12.
      She is survived by five daughters, Marie A. Dippel, Rita A. Gay and Carole L. (Charles) Love - all of Marshall, Michele A. (James) Sahli of Grapevine, Texas and Cynthia (Charles) VanHorn of Traverse City; three sons, Michael R. (Cathy) Galloway, Patrick T. (Debbie) Galloway and John R. (Cathy) Galloway - all of Marshall; 25 grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Catherine (Charles) Germaine and Margaret Wenzel - both of Traverse City; and a brother, Bernard (Beverly) Carroll of Traverse City.
      Mildred was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, Morton and Robert Carroll; two sisters, Virginia Carroll and Mary Louise Carroll; and a son-in-law, David A. Dippel.
      Services were held on Monday.

      Connor Alexander Gleason

      LAKE ANN - Connor Alexander Gleason, newborn son of Brett and Shelly Gleason, died Tuesday at Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor. He was born Monday in Grand Rapids.
      He is survived by his parents, Brett and Shelly Gleason of Lake Ann; his sister, Skylar at home; his paternal grandparents, Linda Gleason and Dave (Carol) Gleason of Traverse City; his maternal grandparents, Steve and Ann Fritz of Muskegon; his paternal great-grandparents, Loren and Idella Gleason of Lansing; five uncles, Trent Gleason and Brian (Julie), Tom, Mike, and Mark Fritz; and two cousins, Jamie and Nicole Fritz.
      Family services will be held Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with Pastor Jim Helman officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.
      Memorials may be directed to the American Heart Association for children's research.
     
      Robert Y. Nash
      Died May 17, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Y. Nash, 80, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Aug. 20, 1918, in Traverse City, he was the son of William H. and Lucille (Wilford) Nash. On Oct. 10, 1940, in Traverse City, he married Eva L. Griffin, who died in 1990.
      Bob was a second generation native of Traverse City. He graduated from Traverse City High School in 1937 and was the first scout master for Troop 134 at Eastern Elementary School and was formerly on the council for the Girl Scouts. He served in the Army Air Force in World War II. He was a former chairperson at the Traverse City Chamber of Commerce in the 50s and was active in the National Cherry Festival in the 50s. Bob worked for the Federal Housing Administration as an appraiser and architectural inspector, retiring in 1985. He was also a real estate broker for the past 40 years.
      He was a life member of the Traverse City Masonic Lodge No. 222 F&AM, the Royal Arch Masons and the Traverse City Elks Lodge. He was also a member of the Long Lake Association. He loved to watch birds, sail and fish. In his younger years he enjoyed hunting. His hobbies included model railroading and antique automobiles.
      He is survived by two daughters, Kay Ann (Larry) Wagner of Kingsley and Mary Lou (Clifford) Boyd of Traverse City; a son, Michael (Christine) Nash of Interlochen; five grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
      Bob was preceded in death by his wife, Eva L., parents, and two brothers, LeRoy and Wilford.
      No services will be held and cremation has taken place. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to the charity of one's choice in Bob's memory.

      ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. - Irwin A. "Irv" Kallush, 57, of St. Petersburg, formerly of Empire, Mich., died Wednesday, May 5.
      Born Feb. 1, 1942, in Detroit, Mich. he was preceded in death by his parents, Samuel and Lillian (Zimmerman) Kallush. On Feb. 14, 1982, he married Jeri Fanning Stevens in Burdickville, Mich.
      Irv served in the U.S. armed services from Feb. 23, 1960, to Feb. 25, 1963, and was stationed in Alaska. He was a devoted husband and father and loved to hunt and fish. He was a previous member of the Empire Lions Club, presently served on the Sunset Palms Community Board of Directors and was also vice president of the local F.M.O.
      He is survived by his wife, Jeri; his two daughters, Beth Ann (Jerry) Crowder of Hampton, Va. and Elisa Kallush (1st Sgt. Luis) Sanchez of Hanau, Germany; stepdaughter, Jeanne Stevens of Traverse City, Mich.; his nephew, Capt. Michael (Corinne) Tucker, and grandniece, Bailey, of San Diego, Calif.; two aunts; and many cousins.
      Irv was adored by many for his charismatic and loving personality and will forever be in the hearts of many.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Irma M. Garland, 90, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Nov. 24, 1908, in Joplin, Mo., she was the daughter of John B. and Elizabeth Maude (Neely) Bosma.
      A resident of Traverse City since 1930, she was a long time member of St. Joseph Catholic Church. She enjoyed the company of her family and friends. Her hobbies included reading, knitting, crocheting and visiting with her many friends.
      Irma is survived by her two daughters, Margo (Dennis) Noteware of Drummond Island and Elizabeth (James) Anderson of Traverse City; stepdaughter, Marianne (Charles) Doe of Traverse City; daughter-in-law, Caroline Reid of Kingman, Ariz.; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her son, David Lardie; two husbands, Edward O. Lardie in 1945 and Fred H. Garland in 1965; and several brothers and sisters.
      Cremation has taken place. Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City one hour prior to the memorial service. Memorial services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Patrick Barrett officiating. Burial will be in St. Joseph Catholic Cemetery in Mapleton.

      FIFE LAKE - Harold James Light, 54, of Fife Lake, died Thursday at his home.
      Born Nov. 20, 1944, in Pontiac, he was the son of Fred M. and Dorothy F. (Gilson) Light. On April 3, 1985, he married Maria Perez in Bradenton, Fla.
      Harold served in the U.S. Marine Corps and was stationed in Vietnam. He worked as a document controller for Tower Automotive.
      He is survived by his wife; eight children, Maria (Joseph) Ciurca of Bradenton, Fla., Steven (Kimber) Wood of Williamsburg, N.Y., Michael (Terry) Wood of Cedar, Ann (Thomas) Drummond of Tampa, Fla., Amanda Walker of Oscoda, Peter Wood of Detroit, Kevin (Ann) Light of Otisville and Amanda Light of Fife Lake; father, Fred M. Light of Alpena; 18 grandchildren; three brothers, Gerald (Lee) Light, Floyd (Judy) Light, and Thomas (Sandy) Light; three sisters, Joan (Jim) Fuller, Jean (Terry) Allen and Trudy (Dave) Hare.
      He was preceded in death by his mother.

      Vernon W. Turnipseed
      Died May 19, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Vernon W. Turnipseed, 81, of Elk Rapids, died Wednesday.
      Born June 2, 1917, in Mancelona, he was the son of Omar and Gertrude (Lusk) Turnipseed. On April 6, 1946, he married Marybelle Herman who preceded him in death on April 23, 1999.
      Vernon served in the Army during World War II and was stationed in Japan and Corisca. A home builder with Northwestern Specialties Company, he was also a cabinet maker with Brown Lumber Company. He attended Elk Rapids Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, building things and he loved being a craftsman.
      He is survived by a son, Dennis Turnipseed of Elk Rapids; three grandchildren, Carrie Turnipseed of Traverse City, Curt Turnipseed of South Dakota and Debra Turnipseed of Acme; two sisters, Florence Hignite of Detroit and Norine (Bill) Caskey of Indiana; and a brother, Don Turnipseed of Detroit.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; wife; five sisters, Eva Kresbaugh, Georgia Wellman, Olive Raby, Mildred McNaughton and Bertha Worden; and two brothers, Alvin and Ervin Turnipseed.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Sunday at the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home with the Rev. Gary Gladfelter officiating. Burial will take place in Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids.

      Charlie W. Haines
      Died May 22, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Charlie W. Haines, 86, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Nov. 20, 1912, in Kewadin, he was the son of John and Laura (Hurst) Haines. On May 5, 1937, in Elk Rapids, he married Pauline Bargy.
      Charlie was a lifelong resident of Kewadin until he moved to Traverse City in 1992; he spent his winters in Englewood, Fla. A home builder and contractor for many years, he retired in 1979. He had also worked as an iceman in Kewadin for 15 years. He was a member of Kewadin Methodist Church and had the distinction of building the church's altar. Charlie's greatest joy was his family.
      Survivors include his wife, Pauline, of Traverse City and Englewood; two sons, John (Susan) of Sarasota, Fla., and Charles (Dianne) of Greenville; two daughters, Edie (Doug) Brown of Traverse City and Betty (Tim) Milligan of Englewood; two foster daughters, Joyce (Bill) Powell of Kewadin and Nancy (Pat) Mullen of Traverse City; two brothers, John of Bellaire and Tom of Coyahoga Falls, Ohio; a sister, Bertha Good of Venice, Fla.; 20 grandchildren; and 34 great-grandchildren.
      Charlie was preceded in death by his parents and four sisters, Ethel Powell, Dorothy Crabtree, Ruth Peck and Edith Haines.

      Linda Lee Guldner
      Died May 22, 1999
      KINGSLEY - Linda Lee Guldner, 51, of Kingsley, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City after a valiant three-month battle with cancer.
      Born April 9, 1948, in Holly, she was the eldest daughter of Louis and Betty (Jackson) Klempp.
      On May 20, 1967, she married her soul mate, Glenn R. Guldner Jr., at Mount Hope Lutheran Church in Grayling.
      Linda enjoyed her work as a pharmaceutical technician at the Kingsley Pharmacy and her efforts supporting and participating in several Kingsley area school organizations over the years. Her interests included music, bowling, swimming, reading and the Detroit Red Wings. By far, Linda's greatest love was her husband and family, who will cherish their memories of her forever.
      Linda is survived by her loving husband, Glenn R. Guldner Jr., 49. She is also survived by her three loyal children - all of Kingsley, Laura, 30, and Eric Van Camp and their three children, Haley, Andrew, and Evan, who affectionately refer to their grandmother as "Honey;" Eric, 29, and Ann Marie Guldner and their expected son, Jonah, who is due June 27; and Josh Guldner, 15, a talented and devoted son. Also surviving are her mother, Betty Klempp of Roscommon; her sister, Diann Klempp of Sault Ste. Marie; her father and mother-in-law, Glenn and Doris Guldner of Houghton Lake; and several brothers-in law, sisters-in-law, nieces, and nephews.
      Her father, Louis Klempp - in 1988, her grandparents, several aunts and uncles, and a cousin preceded her in death.
      A memorial service will take place at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Interlochen at 1 p.m. Saturday, June 5. Pastor Timothy Mowry will direct the service.

      Helen L. Kelenske
      Died May 24, 1999
      CEDAR - Helen L. Kelenske, 82, of Cedar, finished her work Monday at her home in the presence of her family.
      She was born Dec. 24, 1916, in Cedar, the daughter of Alex and Isabelle (Harpe) Brow. She was a resident of Leelanau County for most of her life and lived on her family farm for over 55 years.
      A longtime member of Holy Rosary Church in Isadore, she was also a member of the church's Rosary Society. She gave to and was a supporter of numerous charitable organizations for many years. Along with her many chores on the family farm, Helen also worked at Essex Wire, Morgan McCool and Frigid Foods.
      She loved to be with her children and grandchildren and listen to their many stories. Helen loved to watch and listen to birds. She enjoyed gardening (never had a weed in her garden), baking and cooking - especially her banana cream pie.
      Survivors include three children, Donald S. (Susan) Aprill of Cedar, Sandra K. (Max) Hart of Kingsley, and Jerry (Anna Mae) Kelenske of Cedar; a brother, Noah Brow; six sisters, Lucille Jaranson, Jane Taylor, Dorothy Kenny, Eileen White, Thelma Henning, and Marie Green; 15 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
      Helen was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John Max Kelenske, in 1993; a grandson; and two sisters.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today; a Rosary will be recited at 7:30. Friends may also call at the church beginning one hour before the service on Wednesday.
      A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Holy Rosary Church in Isadore. Burial will be in Mount Calvary Cemetery in Isadore.

      Leona V. Moore
      Died May 24, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Leona V. Moore, 95, died Monday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 21, 1903, in Hackleburg, Ala., she was the daughter of Thomas and Manora (Wiggington) Thorpe. On Jan. 12, 1921, in Marion County, Ala., she married Dewey Moore.
      A homemaker, Leona had lived in Traverse City for the past six years, after moving from Hackleburg. She had lived in Flint and Grand Blanc for most of her life. Leona was a former member of the Hackleburg Baptist Church and an avid fisherwoman and hunter.
      Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Bud) Bender of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Susan (Jack) Seaman of Cedar, Bradford Grambush of Atlanta, Ga., Valerie Moore of Grand Blanc, Gregory (Gwen) Moore of Flint, Grafton (Sharon) Moore Jr. of Holly, and Goeffrey (Jan) Moore of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Pearce of Hackleburg; a bother, Eckles (Bertha) Thorpe of Hackleburg; and nine great-grandchildren.
      Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey, on July 2, 1955; a son, Grafton, in 1981; and six brothers and sisters.
      A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, June 7, at Linnwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township; Pastor Bruce Sheets will officiate.

      Elsie B. Norton
      Died May 23, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Elsie B. Norton, 87, of Traverse City, died Sunday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
      Born April 25, 1912, in Chicago, she was the daughter of Edward John and Katherine (Komrska) Pavlis.
      On Sept. 28, 1940, in Traverse City, she married Amil Norton.
      Elsie spent her early years in Grant Township and Monroe Center. She then moved to Traverse City with her husband and son, Larry. Elsie worked in the central supply department at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City for 15 years before retiring on April 1, 1977.
      She cherished the tasks of homemaking and especially loved cooking, baking and knitting. Elsie had many close friends and spent a lot of time with her sister and all of her sister's children at family gatherings. She attended Immanuel Baptist Church in Traverse City where she was baptized after receiving Jesus Christ as her personal savior after her 80th birthday.
      Surviving are a son, Larry A. (Judith) Norton of Traverse City; three grandsons, William D. Cunningham, John W. Cunningham, and Mark C. Norton; four great-grandchildren, Asharra, Tasha, Paul, and Becky Cunningham; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. All will miss her.
      Elsie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Amil, in 1990; and a sister, Mildred McPhall, in 1997.
      Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.       A homemaker, she was born Feb. 26, 1921, in Alma.
      Betty is survived by her husband, Glen, of Oviatt and Lillian, Ala.; brother, Robert Stewart of Florida.; five children, Virginia Biederman of Arizona., David Riggs of Michigan City, Ind., James Riggs of Empire, Linda Adsit of Grand Haven, and Mary Kay of Bucannan.
      She was preceded in death by her mother, Bea Ragan, sister, Ella, son, Monte, and a stepfather, Bert Stewart.
      Cremation has taken place. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at the First Methodist Church in Lake Ann. A luncheon will follow. Betty will be layed to rest at the Rose Hill Cemetery on M-72.

      Died May 24, 1999
      SAN PIERRE, Ind. - Sophia A. Ruminski, 87, died Monday at Our Lady of Holy Cross Care Center in San Pierre.
      She was born May 15, 1912, in New Briton, Conn., the daughter of Joseph and Josephine (Oscilowska) Wendzicki. On June 30, 1934, in Cleveland, she married Albion B. Ruminski.
      A homemaker and former resident of LaPorte, Sophia was a member of St. Peter Catholic Church. She had been an active member of the LaPorte Republican Party and the Polish Roman Catholic Union. Sophia also participated in local bowling leagues.
      Survivors include three daughters, Mary Jo Kennedy of LaPorte, Barbara Zook of Michigan City, and Regina Kindig of Grawn, Mich.; five sons, Patrick Ruminski of New Buffalo, Mich., Michael, Terrence, and Andrew Ruminski - all of LaPorte, and Daniel Ruminski of Watertown, Conn.; 26 grandchildren; 22 great-grandchildren; and several nieces, nephews, great-nieces, and great-nephews.
      Sophia was preceded in death by her husband, Albion, on Nov. 26, 1975; a son, Michael Ruminski; three brothers, Louis, John, and Stanley Wendzicki; and three sisters, Bertha Macknicki, Stephanie Strauss, and Helen Wendzicki.
      Friends may visit from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday and from 8 to 9:30 a.m Thursday at Essling Funeral Home in LaPorte. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 a.m. Thursday at St. Peter Catholic Church in LaPorte; the Rev. George M. Vrabely will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Patton Cemetery.

      INTERLOCHEN - Terry Lester Acha, 49, of Interlochen, formerly of Naples, Fla., died Sunday at home.
      Born Sept. 9, 1949, in Traverse City, he was the son of Lester and Lucille Mary (Eikey) Acha.
      Terry served in the U.S. Army. A native of Traverse City, he was a plastic fabricator at Midwest Air Products and he enjoyed woodworking and playing guitar.
      He is survived by a son, Jereme S. Acha and two daughters, Jessica L. Acha and Manessa I. Acha - all of Traverse City; three sisters, Sandra (Neal) Nelbach of San Antonio, Texas, Judy (Terry) Ebelt of Traverse City and Debra (Doug) Hoxie of Traverse City; a niece, Amy Hoxie of Traverse City; and a nephew, Chris Nelbach of Boston, Mass.
      He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother.
      Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

      Irene Engelbertson

      BENZONIA - Irene Engelbertson, 95, of Benzonia, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born April 7, 1904, in Kalkaska County, she was the daughter of Mark Harold and Emma Louella (Avery) Ennis. In August, 1940, in St. Louis, Mo., she married Elmer T. Engelbertson.
      A homemaker, Irene enjoyed knitting, crocheting, quilt making and gardening. She moved from Muskegon to Benzonia in 1960.
      She is survived by two daughters, Alice Tiff of Muskegon and Cherri (Kayo) Hennefent of Benzonia; a son, Elmer (Kathy) Engelbertson of Benzonia; several nieces, nephews and cousins; 12 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband in 1966; son, Harold Steele; daughters, Ann Beegle and Fern Califf; brother, Cleo Ennis; and a sister, Bertine Sherwood.
      Visitation for family members will be from 10 to 11:30 a.m. Thursday at Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah. Services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at Eden Bible Church in Beulah with the Pastor Dan Ingersoll officiating. Friends may call the church at the time of service. Burial will be at Joyfield Township Cemetery in Benzonia.

      Michael Ead Harris
      Died May 14, 1999
      FRANKFORT, Ky. - Michael Ead Harris, 53, of Frankfort, died Friday, May 14, at Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Frankfort.
      Born Dec. 10, 1945, in Flint, Mich., he was the son of Harland D. Harris II and A. Elizabeth (Ead) Harris.
      Michael lived in Flint; Cincinnati, Ohio; New Rochelle, N.Y.; Muncie, Ind.; Atlanta, Ga.; and Janesville, Wis., before spending his last 37 years in Frankfort. He also spent time in Fort Pierce, Fla., and Leland, Mich.
      Michael became a caregiver and spiritual teacher. He was a deeply devoted friend to Piers Banks of the Stewart Home School of Frankfort.
      He is survived by three brothers and a sister, Harland D. Harris III and his wife, Carol, of Holly, Mich.; R. Clark Harris and his wife, Marilyn, of Cromwell, Conn.; Joan E. Huntley and her husband, Mike, of Denver; and Peter D. Harris and his wife, Gayle, of Flint. Michael is also survived by 11 nieces and nephews, 15 great-nieces and great-nephews, and countless friends at Stewart Home School and in the Frankfort community.
      Michael was preceded in death by his parents and passed away the same day as his nephew-in-law, Steven Pierce of Butte, Mont.
      A memorial service was held May 20 at Stewart Home School; Hospice Chaplain David L. Hilton officiated. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, Mich.; the Rev. Walter A. Fitton will officiate. Burial will be in Beechwood Cemetery in Leland.

      Arnzel H. Loucks

      INTERLOCHEN - Arnzel H. Loucks, 69, of Interlochen, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      "Yes, heaven is thine, but this in a world of sweets and sours. Our flowers are merely flowers and the shadow of thy perfect bliss is the sunshine of ours."
      A welder, he was born March 15, 1930, in Ozark to Clayton and Anna (Bradley) Loucks. On Feb. 14, 1955, in Tampa, Fla., he married Lillian Rosalie Ouderkirk.
      He is survived by his wife; daughter, Joy Loucks of Interlochen; son, Arnzel, Jr. of Interlochen; daughter, Tina (Don) Shelter of Traverse City; brother, James Loucks of Lansing; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
      Arnzel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Arnold and an infant son.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah with the Pastor Jeff Savage officiating. Friends may call at the time of service.

      Leona V. Moore

      TRAVERSE CITY - Leona V. Moore, 95, died Monday at Grand Traverse Pavilions in Traverse City.
      Born Oct. 21, 1903, in Hackleburg, Ala., she was the daughter of Thomas and Manora (Wiggington) Thorpe. On Jan. 12, 1921, in Marion County, Ala., she married Dewey Moore.
      A homemaker, Leona had lived in Traverse City for the past six years, after moving from Hackleburg. She had lived in Flint and Grand Blanc for most of her life. Leona was a former member of the Hackleburg Baptist Church and an avid fisherwoman and hunter.
      Survivors include a daughter, Mary (Bud) Bender of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Susan (Jack) Seaman of Cedar, Bradford Grambush of Atlanta, Ga., Valerie Moore of Grand Blanc, Gregory (Gwen) Moore of Flint, Grafton (Sharon) Moore Jr. of Holly, and Goeffrey (Jan) Moore of Nashville, Tenn.; a sister, Edna Pearce of Hackleburg; a bother, Eckles (Bertha) Thorpe of Hackleburg; and nine great-grandchildren.
      Leona was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Dewey, on July 2, 1955; a son, Grafton, in 1981; and six brothers and sisters.
      A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, June 5, at Linnwood Cemetery in Long Lake Township; Pastor Bruce Sheets will officiate.

      SHEPARD - Robert J. Wilson, 57, of Shepard, died Monday at Gratiot Community Hospital in Alma.
      Born June 18, 1941, in Ithica, he was the son of Chesterfield and Jennie Wilson. Robert worked as a building contractor for many years. He was also a building inspector for numerous years, serving Isabella, Kalkaska and Gladwin counties.
      Survivors include his partner in life, Becky Nestle of Shepard; a daughter, Laurie Ann Wilson of St. Louis; two sons, Troy E. Wilson of St. Louis and Robert J. Wilson II of Weidman; Becky's children, Richard (Doris) Nestle Jr. of Winn, Rhonda Nestle of Shepard, Rene Nestle of Shepard, and Ryan (Tina) Nestle of Midland; three grandchildren, Troy, Trenton, and Hunter Wilson; two brothers, Byron Lott (Shirley) Bard of Sanford and Rayfield (Delilah) Wilson of Dodge City; and many nieces and nephews.
      Robert was preceded in death by two brothers, Carl and Henry Bard, and two sisters, Peg Rasey and Lila (Kostuck) Stahl.

      FRANKFORT - Emma J. Blood, 82, "A gentle, caring lady who loved her lord with all her heart," died Saturday.
      Born Sept. 21, 1916, in Elberta, she was the daughter of Wilmer Ernest and Anna Elvina (Pettis) Gray. On May 12, 1943, in Great Falls, Mont., she married Robert W. Blood.
      A registered nurse, she was a lifetime resident of Benzie county. She graduated from Washington Sanitarium and Hospital of Tacoma Park, Md. and worked in private duty nursing. She also worked at Anna Markham and Paul Oliver Memorial Hospitals in Frankfort.
      She is survived by a son, Robert W. Blood Jr. of Hinsdale, Ill; daughter, Linda (Dennis) Bisseger of Modesto, Calif.; daughter, Barbara Blood of Frankfort; son, Roger (Karen) Blood of Walla Walla, Wash.; five sisters, twin sister, Frances (Ira) Tarzwell of Cheboygan, Lila Smeltzer of Benzonia, Elizabeth Blood of Holland, Gertrude Burley of Frankfort and Ruby (Leroy) Rohn of Frankfort; two grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.
      She was preceded in death by her husband, Robert, in 1991; parents; two sisters, Virginia Gray and Zelma Gray; and three brothers, Wilmer Gray Jr., Robert Gray and William Gray.
      Memorial services will be held in July at the Seventh Day Adventist Church of Frankfort and will be announced at a later date. The Elder Jay Darling will officiate. Burial will be in Gilmore Township Cemetery. Friends may call at the time of service.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Avis J. Kirsch, 82, a professional writer, of Traverse City and formerly of Grosse Pointe Park, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Nov. 23, 1916, in Hornell, N.Y., she was the daughter of Benton French and Marjorie (Pearce) MacMullen.
      She was an outgoing, gracious individual who enjoyed the company of her family and friends. Avis enjoyed gardening, especially viewing formal gardens. She was formerly employed by Niagara County Community College in Niagara Falls, N.Y., WNED Educational Television in Buffalo, N.Y. and Grosse Pointe School System.
      Avis attended New York University, New York, N.Y., Alfred University, Alfred, N.Y. where she received her master's degree in education and Mansefield University where she received her bachelor's degree in science.
      She was a member of Daughters of American Revolution, American Association of University Woman, ARC Grosse Pointe/Harper Woods, Mayflower Society of Michigan and Tuesday Book Club.
      She is survived by a daughter, Ardana J. Titus; son, Rodney R. Kirsch; son-in-law, Wendell Titus; and three grandchildren, Johnathan Titus, Benjamin Titus and Zachary Titus - all of Traverse City.
      Avis was preceded in death by her husband, A. John Kirsch, and a brother, Robert MacMullen.

      Albert W. Lautner
      Died May 25, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Albert W. Lautner, 86, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at home.
      Born Sept. 21, 1912, in Traverse City, he was the son of Albert and Grace (Sneed) Lautner. On Sept. 5, 1936, in Muskegon, he married Pauline L. Barr.
      A former resident of Lansing for 50 years, he was an employee of the Oldsmobile division of GM for 28 years. He retired in 1972. He moved to Traverse City in 1992. He was a member of AFL-CIO No. 652 in Lansing. He enjoyed biking, golf, gardening, cars, especially Oldsmobiles, dancing and big band music.
      He is survived by his wife; brother-in-law and sister-in-law, William and Kathryn Barr; sister-in-law, Jean Weatherholt; many nieces and nephews, Royce (Olivia) Carter, James Carter, Michael (Joanne) Carter, Ford (Bonnie) Carter, Connie (Thomas) Rumbach, Sherry Lark, Julie (David) Misico, Jill (David) Kipley, Janine (Paul) Weatherholt-Nimmer, Jon (Dena) Weatherholt, Camille Weatherholt, Michelle Weatherholt, Ralph (Sandra) Green, Karen (Norman) Buchan and Marilyn Davis; and many great-nieces and great-nephews.
      He was preceded in death by a sister, Alice Carter and two brothers-in-law, Royce Carter and Thomas Weatherholt.

      TRAVERSE CITY - Catherine Shank, 70, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Feb. 17, 1929, in Detroit, she was the daughter of William and Catherine (Carroll) Cox.
      Catherine was a banker in Detroit for many years before retiring in 1990. After her retirement she moved to Traverse City. A member of St. Francis Catholic Church and Pine Needlers Quilting Guild, she volunteered at the Traverse City Visitor's Center, Dennos Museum and Interlochen Fine Arts Camp. She also enjoyed gardening.
      She is survived by a son, James (Lynn) Shank of Boston, Mass.; two daughters, Kathy (Raymond) Bollman of Traverse City and Susan (Stephen) Coussens of Boyne City; and four grandchildren, Shannon and Michael Ruh and Geoff and Katie Martin.
      She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, William Cox.

      Evelyn Louise Barrick
      Died May 26, 1999
      KARLIN - Evelyn Louise (Donaldson) Barrick, 85, of Karlin, died Wednesday.
      Born Dec. 23, 1913, in Danville, Ill., she was the daughter of Eugene and Elizabeth (Trout) Donaldson. On Oct. 23, 1933, she married Everett J. Barrick.
      The youngest of 13 children, she was a resident of Karlin since 1967 and had many special friends. The joy of her life were her children and grandchildren. Evelyn worked as a waitress, school bus driver and assistant to the postmaster in Karlin. She will be remembered as an avid Skip-Bo card player.
      She is survived by two daughters, Barbara (Herb) Puryear and Karen (Lee) Murray - both of Interlochen; son, Donald Barrick of Holmes Beach, Fla.; grandchildren; Shawn Barrick, Kelly Barrick, Rochelle Day and Stacey Puryear; five great-grandchildren; and many special nieces and nephews.
      She was preceded in death by her husband on Oct. 19, 1978; beloved granddaughter, Denise Gay (Puryear) Zirwes on Sept. 18, 1990; and her brothers and sisters.
      A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

      Fred Milliron Sr.
      Died May 26, 1999
      BENZONIA - Fred Milliron, 105, of Benzonia, died Wednesday at his home.
      Born Nov. 9, 1893, in Copemish, he was the son of William and Emma (Hanibal) Milliron. On Oct. 19, 1915, in Manistee, he married Helena Bargarstock.
      Fred was born and raised in the Copemish area but made his home in the Beulah/Benzonia area since the late 1930s.
      He retired from the Ann Arbor Railroad in 1965 to pursue other interests. He was a caretaker for the flowers for the Benzonia Garden Club where he was an honorary member. He was also a caretaker for the Benzonia Township Cemetery and managed the Beulah Trailer Park for many years. All those years he maintained a large garden. Fred was an avid outdoorsman. He loved to hunt in the upper peninsula and fish in Canada but his main love was fly-fishing on the Betsie River. There were very few nights he came home empty handed.
      Survivors include Phyliss Covert, Geraldine Halsema, Maxine (Donovon) Hansen, Diane Roth - all of Beulah, Velma Patterson of Toledo, Ohio; three sons, Fred Jr. (Betty) of Beulah, William (Sherrill) of Benzonia and David (Sherrie) of Traverse City; 23 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; and one great-great-great-grandchild.
      Fred was preceded in death by his parents; wife of 59 years; eight brothers, William, Frank, Elmer, Herman, Roy, John, Charles and Mark; sister, Katherine Moore; son, James; daughter, Shirley Potter; grandson, Mark; granddaughter, Judith Milliron; and great-granddaughter, Denise Bense.

      Nancy Sniff
      Died May 27, 1999
      MESICK - Nancy Sniff, 58, of Mesick, died Thursday at her home after a two year illness.
      Born May 4, 1941, in Ionia County, she was the daughter of Victor and Irma (Garrett) Croel. On Nov. 22, 1958, she married Pat Sniff of Grand Rapids.
      Nancy was raised in Grand Rapids and has been a resident of Mesick since 1959. She owned and operated Pat's Place and Mesick Bottled Gas with her husband. She was an avid Coke collector and enjoyed her family and shopping.
      She is survived by her husband, two sons, Pat (Claudia) Sniff and O'Shane (Sheena) Sniff - both of Mesick; daughter, Colleen (Norbert) Huber of Mesick; brother, Duane (Jalene) Croel of Mesick; two sisters, Bonnie Didlinger of Indianapolis, Ind. and Doris (LaVerne) Bordeaux of Wyoming; seven grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.
      She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Bob.
      Family graveside services will be held at the Yuma Cemetery with Pastor Marlene Wermuth officiating.
      Memorials may be made to the Faith Lutheran Church preschool in Mesick.
      Arrangements are being handled by the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton.
     
      WILLIAM G. 'GERRY' HEADLEY, 67, of Kalkaska and formerly of Rapid City, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at his home. He was born in Ecorse on June 29, 1931.
      Friends may call from 5 to 9 p.m. today at the Wolfe Funeral Home in Kalkaska. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.
     
      MARSHALL M. JACOBS, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday, May 27, 1999.

      MERVIN E. SUTTER, 77, of Kewadin, died Thursday, May 27, 1999, at home.
      Burial has taken place. A graveside memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Maple Grove Cemetery in Elk Rapids. Arrangements are being handled by the Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      Norma R. Van Fossan
      Died May 25, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Norma R. Van Fossan, 69, of Traverse City and Sarasota, Fla., died Tuesday in Atlanta, Ga.
      Norma was born Aug. 12, 1929, in Warren, Ohio.
      She was a member of the TPC at Prestancia and the Oaks Club - both in Sarasota, Fla., and the Traverse City Golf and Country Club. A former resident of Atlanta, Ga., she was also a member of the Capital City Country Club in Atlanta, Ga.
      She is survived by two sons, D.J. Van Fossen and James Van Fossen; daughter-in-law, Marie Palena; and two grandchildren - all residents of Atlanta, Ga.
      The family is planning a private service. Arrangements are being handled by the National Cremation Society, Mabelton, Ga.
     
      Arnzel H. Loucks
      Died May 22, 1999
      INTERLOCHEN - Arnzel H. "Birdman" Loucks, 69, of Interlochen, left to go to the big ham radio in the sky Saturday.
      "Yes, heaven is thine, but this in a world of sweets and sours. Our flowers are merely flowers and the shadow of thy perfect bliss is the sunshine of ours."
      A veteran of the Korean war and a welder, he was born March 15, 1930, in Ozark to Clayton and Anna (Bradley) Loucks. On Feb. 14, 1955, in Tampa, Fla., he married Lillian Rosalie Ouderkirk.
      He is survived by his wife; daughter, Joy Loucks of Interlochen; son, Arnzel, Jr. of Interlochen; daughter, Tina (Don) Shelder of Traverse City; brother, James Loucks of Lansing; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
      Arnzel was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Arnold and an infant son.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Bennett-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Beulah with the Pastor Jeff Savage officiating. Friends may call at the time of service.
      Memorials may be directed to the Arnzel Loucks Memorial Fund.
     
      Robert M. McClellan
      Died May 27, 1999
      FLINT - Robert M. McClellan, 52, of Flint, died Thursday at Hurley Medical Center in Flint.
      Born July 18, 1946, in Beaver Falls, Pa., he was the son of Arthur and Mary (Drake) McClellan. On Nov. 16, 1968, he married Patricia Maker who preceded him in death on Jan. 9, 1993.
      Robert was a past master of Morningstar Lodge No. 556 F&AM, worshipful senior grand warden of the Grand Lodge of Free and Accepted Masons of Michigan, a member of Valley of Bay City Scottish Rite A.A.S.R., Elk Khurafeh Shrine Temple, A.A.O.N.M.S., past monarch Kishma Grotto M.O.V.P.E.R., member and past president of King Solomon of District 20 and member of Past Masters Masonic Club of Genesee county, Calvary Community Church and the Boy Scouts of America. He was employed by General Motors at Buick City and retired in 1998.
      He is survived by a son, Rob M. (Alison) McClellan of West Bloomfield; brother, John (Gerry) McClellan of Traverse City; special friend, Jan Brown of Clio; sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Carol (Mark) Coffin of Davisburg, Scott (Jennifer) Maker of Flint, Andy (Tricia) Maker of Frederick, Md., Vicky (Larry) Wilson of Arkansas, Frank (Betty) Maker of Gaines, Rosemary (Richard) Dicideau of California; mother-in-law and father-in-law, Victoria and George Maker of Lewiston; stepmother, Barbara McClellan of Frankfort; and several nieces and nephews.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Visitation will be from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Sunday and Monday at the Swartz Funeral Home in Flint. A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Monday at the funeral home by officers of the Grand Lodge. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home with Joe J. Florida, Grand Chaplain of the Grand Lodge of Michigan, officiating. Burial will be in Flint Memorial Park.
      Memorials may be directed to Michigan Masonic Home, Scleroderma Foundation or the Masonic Youth Foundation.
     
      John A. Popa
      Dorothy Rose Popa
      Died May 26, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - John A. Popa, 84, and Dorothy Rose Popa, 75, of Traverse City, died Wednesday as a result of an automobile accident.
      John was born June 15, 1914, in Cedar to Walter and Salomea (Peplinski) Popa. Dorothy was born Feb. 28, 1924, in Cedar. She was the daughter of Michael and Regina (Brzezinski) Galla. On July 5, 1941, in a double wedding ceremony in Isadore, Dorothy Rose Galla and her sister, Alvena, married brothers John and Stanley Popa.
      John and Dorothy were an active, energetic couple who enjoyed life to its fullest which included their family, cards, dancing and social functions of the community. They were members of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Knights of Columbus.
      John served in the Army during World War II. He was a retired machinist at Cone Drive Gears Textron and he enjoyed fishing. Dorothy was a homemaker and enjoyed gardening and cooking for her family.
      They are survived by seven children, Dorothy Jean (Thomas) Coulter of Kalamazoo, John (Gayle) Popa of Traverse City, Paulette M. Bennett of Grawn, Dale F. (Jan) Popa of Traverse City, David M. (Karen) Popa of Cedar, Thaddeus F. (Nancy A.) Popa of Mason, and Marie A. (Joseph) Lawson of Sanford. Also surviving are Dorothy's four sisters, Alvena (Stanley) Popa, Susan Strobbe, Marie Feldman and Esther Crocker; sister-in-law, Jean Galla; six brothers, Steven (Joyce) Galla, Leon (Lorretta) Galla, Walter (Marga) Galla, Anthony (Georgetta) Galla, John (Virginia) Galla and Donald (Geraldine) Galla; John's brother, Stanley (Alvena) Popa; three sisters, Theresa Mikowski, Sally (Leonard) Thoreson and Mary Ann (Robert) Linguar; sister-in-law, Joanne Popa; 20 grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.
      They were preceded in death by John's nine brothers and sisters; Dorothy's brother, Paul; son-in-law, Joseph F. Bennett, Jr; and grandson, Matthew Coulter.
      A rosary was held at 7 p.m. and a vigil service was held at 7:30 p.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Suttons Bay on Friday. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today at the church with the Rev. Jerry Hunko and Rev. Wayne Dziekan officiating. Burial will be at Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Isadore.
      In lieu of flowers memorials may be directed to mass intentions at St. Michael's Catholic Church or St. Mary's School in Lake Leelanau.
      Arrangements were handled by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.
     
      Marshall M. Jacobs
      Died May 27, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Marshall M. Jacobs, 88, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City after a very short illness.
      Born Sept. 27, 1910, in Muskegon, he was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Clare S. (Bessie Mack) Jacobs.
      Marshall had been a resident of Traverse City since 1948 coming from Illinois so he could be closer to his family. He had worked at the Park Place Hotel and Munson Hospital in the dietary department. He retired in 1975. After his retirement he was very busy with R.S.V.P. of which he had 8608 hours of service. He also volunteered at the Senior Center, Bortz Health Care and Meals on Wheels. He volunteered up to the last month of his life. His hobbies included watching videos, oil painting and helping people. He was a member of Presbyterian Church and a former member of the Moose Lodge.
      He is survived by three stepdaughters, Mr. and Mrs. Timothy Coe (Patti) of Gaylord, Mr. and Mrs. Perry Vander Muellen (Pamela) of Traverse City and Mr. and Mrs. Frederick Ward (Phyllis) of Grand Rapids; a stepson, Lawrence S. Anderson of Waterford; a brother, John F. Jacobs of Grosse Pointe; two nieces, Mr. and Mrs. William Richards (Patte) of Traverse City and Mr. and Mrs. Kenneth Nelson (Rikki) of Grand Rapids; a nephew, Mr. and Mrs. A. Richard Jacobs of Traverse City; a special grandniece, Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Lambert (Clara) of Traverse City; and many stepgrandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Merle, in 1987; a brother, A. R. Jacobs; and a sister, Helen Jacobs.
      Friends may call at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City from 6 to 8 p.m. Monday. Funeral services will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Presbyterian Church in Traverse City with Dr. Homer Nye officiating.
      Memorials may be directed to R.S.V.P. or the Presbyterian Church.
     
      Julie Vande Velde
      Died May 17, 1999
      CHICAGO - Julie (Oppliger) Vande Velde, of Chicago, Ill, died Monday, May 17.
      She was the dearest daughter of Paul and the late Bonnie Oppliger.
      She graduated from Midland High School in 1975 and attended Northwestern Michigan College for two years while working part-time at Hamilton's Mens Wear. She graduated in fabric design from North Dakota University in 1981. She then worked in Chicago in fund development.
      She is survived by her father; husband, Harry; brother, Jefferey (Arvida); and sister, Susan (Chris) Anderson.
      She was preceded in death by her mother.
      A memorial service was held Thursday, May 20, at St. Benedict Church in Chicago, Ill.

      ALMA - Charles Edmund Skinner of Alma passed away Thursday.
      A beloved father, grandfather and great-grandfather, he is fondly remembered by his many former students because of his dedication and concern for them as an Alma College professor.
      A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, June 13, at the Alma College chapel.
      Memorials may be directed to the Alice and Charles Skinner Scholarship Fund at Alma College or to the Michigan Masonic Home.
