To every thing there is a season,
and a time to every purpose
under the heaven.

Julius Charles Sleder
Died July 21, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Julius Sleder, whose love of life was matched by his towering frame, generosity and beaming smile, died Wednesday surrounded by his family. He was 85.
He was owner of the Grand Traverse Auto Ford Dealership for over 30 years. In this capacity he saw himself not just as a business man, but as a provider of a valuable service to the public he so enjoyed. He never retired. In fact, at 82 years of age he significantly increased the scale of his business by building a unique Ford prototype dealership, one of only ten in the nation. He lived up to his advertising credo, "Just see Julius" by planting himself right up front and accessible to customers and employees. His son-in-law and manager, Gary Moss, said, "He made it a point to acknowledge everyone, he had the unparalleled ability to make everyone feel special. If an employee made a mistake, he never berated anyone but saw an opportunity to learn." His employees unanimously speak to his always making time for them and making them feel valued and at ease. Friend and business associate Ken Olson, said, "In the over fifty years I've known Julius, I never saw him angry once. In business he was always firm, but kind and fair."
Julius generously shared his gifts and time by serving the community, state and country in numerous ways. He was Mayor of Traverse City; served on the Traverse City Commission where he was instrumental in developing the Grandview Parkway. He was a delegate aiding in the rewriting of Michigan's Constitution. As a Northwestern Michigan College Trustee for over 25 years, he was respected as a man who inspired others with his up-beat, get-things-done attitude. He was an active member in the local Elks Lodge and Kiwanis Club. He also served as board member to two distinguished automobile institutions; the Lincoln Mercury Dealer's Association and the Ford Dealer's Advertising Fund. In the second World War, Julius served in the U.S. Navy at the rank of Lieutenant j.g. of the First Beach Battalion in the North African, Italian and French theaters. Additionally, he helped many charity organizations. His daughter Jayne said, "Dad was always filling in gaps for organizations in need so that the Boy Scouts - or whomever - could go on their trip or build what they needed. He was a soft touch always digging in his pockets or grabbing his checkbook but he was usually quiet about it."
Julius pursued his education at Michigan State University where he graduated with a degree in business administration and played varsity football and basketball. He never let friends forget that his football team beat rival University of Michigan three years in a row while he was on the team. His love of sports was lifelong. He frequently attended Michigan State University games and was active in the alumni association. He was a zealous sports booster of the Trojans and Titans; constantly cheering on his granddaughter's basketball team. Julius valued play as well as work.
Julius loved the public early in life. Along with his parents, Frank and Anna (Lautner) and brother, Erich, he ran Sleder's Meat Market on Front Street in a building which still bears his family's name. The market, like his dealership, was a thriving hive of activity, the atmosphere in which Julius lived all his life. Just three weeks ago Julius was touring Europe with his daughter Jayne. He visited his ancestral homeland, the Czech Republic, attended business meetings in London, took in the sights, and imbibed with the local fare on the pub-scene. "Dad lived large," said daughter Mary Jo. "He really knew how to enjoy life, to savor every moment, he taught me its sweetness, he was my rock, we'll miss him." Daughter Jayne echoes his gift of making everyone feel important, she said, "I could talk to him about anything, he was my friend, my father, my fortress."
Though he was uncharacteristically private about his war years, Julius' close friend, Mac Ferguson, said he was always very brave in all things; during the war, in life's difficult moments, and mostly, when he was fighting to regain his health. Julius saved his life while in Salerno, Italy. Mac was examining a hand grenade and fiddling with the detonation cords when Julius yelled, "Drop it, and run like hell!" Said Mac, "It was a privilege and honor to be his friend, he had a beautiful family and we all loved him so."
In addition to his two daughters and son-in-law, Julius is survived by four grandchildren, Matthew, Sarah and Anna Sikarskie and Julius "Jake" Sleder Moss - all of Traverse City; and his legions of relatives, friends and business associates all over the world.
He was preceded in death by his loving wife of 48 years, Doris (Pulcipher) Sleder and his brother, Erich Sleder.

Grant H. Brown
Died July 23, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Grant H. Brown, 99, a full time resident of Frankfort since 1960, died Friday at Munson Medical Center.
Born March 11, 1900, in Joliet, Ill., he was the son of J. Stanley and Elizabeth May Brown. Raised in Joliet, where his father was the superintendent of schools and later the founder of Joliet Junior College, he graduated from Joliet High School and, later, Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Wisconsin in 1921. He was married in 1921 to Charlotte Kirshner, whom he met at Crystal Lake. The ceremony was held between the Kirshner and Fairchild cottages. They had two children, Charlene and Grant Jr.
Grand had a successful career, beginning as a textbook salesman and ending as president of the American Book Company, a major textbook publisher. His career was interrupted during World War II with service in the U.S. Navy. He was stationed at Great Lakes Naval Training Center where he was in charge of the V12 officers training program for the ninth Naval district. During the war, they trained more officers than the Naval Academy had previously trained in their entire history.
Grant's association with and love for the Benzie County area began in 1906 when his family first brought him to Crystal Lake. They camped the first summer and built a house the next - the same house he has lived in since his retirement in 1960.
Over the years, he was active in the Benzie area, serving as athletic chairman for the Congregational Summer Assembly and commodore of the Crystal Lake Yacht Club. Grant was even more active in retirement, serving as Republican county chairman for Benzie County, member of the board of the State Savings Bank and co-founder of the Anchor and Heart Foundation to raise funds for the Paul Oliver Memorial Hospital in Frankfort.

Arlene C. Cook
Died July 23, 199
TRAVERSE CITY - Arlene C. "Cookie" Cook, a lifelong, third-generation resident of Traverse City, died about 11 a.m. Friday morning at Munson Medical Center.
The fourth of seven siblings, Arlene was born June 27, 1910, to Frederick and Yolande (Travers) Campeau. On Jan. 3, 1934, she married Herbert L. "Bert" Cook of Traverse City.
They made their home on a farm just west of Traverse City West Junior High School on Silver Lake Road until Bert's death on Dec. 5, 1983.
Arlene attended Saint Francis High School. She transferred to Traverse City Central High School to develop her skills in typing and shorthand and graduated in 1929. Upon graduation she started employment with Western Union as a telephone operator and later worked for Comstock (Globe) Department Store, Hastings Santo Insurance, T.C. Cigar Box Factory and, by 1944, was office manager for Valley Roofing.
In 1944, at age 33, she enlisted in the U.S. Navy as a recruit and obtained the rating of Yeoman First Class before she was honorably discharged three years later. Never satisfied with second-best, she won an All Navy Wide competition for typists at 146 words a minute with no errors. She was awarded the American Campaign and World War II Victory ribbons as were all honorably discharged veterans. Arlene continued in the navy reserves until 1949.
After the war she worked for Parson Industries, Wadell Brothers, T.C. Production Credit Association and, for nearly 20 years, the Social Security Administration where she received several awards for proficiency and innovation. Her retirement in 1970 ended 41 years of continuous employment - all in Traverse City except for her Navy years.
Known as Cookie to her friends, Arlene enjoyed life to the fullest and continually sought new challenges. Her love of flowers was expressed in her gardens and through her paintings. She started painting after retirement, had many friends among the local artists and craftsmen and displayed regularly at their shows. Arlene was especially fond of her awards from judging. Several of her paintings are displayed at her last residence, The Highlander, where she is missed by her friends, Phillis, Marie, Lillian, Regina, the other residents, staff and Margaret, her regular visitor.
At age 84, Arlene traveled to Canada to try out white water rafting. This was one of many adventures she accomplished in her later life, including trips to Israel and Yugoslavia. She also enjoyed walking at the Civic Center and her religion, both of which gave her the ability to do what she enjoyed most - meet new people.
Arlene was a longtime member of Immaculate Conception Church, a Third Order of Carmel member, a generous supporter of Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools and a Munson volunteer.
Survivors include many nieces and nephews and her older brother, Alfred Campeau, who resides at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
Arlene was also preceded in death by her parents; her sisters, Margaret Fiebing, Florence McKian, Lola Pochel, and Eleanor Campeau; and her brother, Richard J. "Jack" Campeau.
Cremation has taken place. A memorial Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. Wednesday at Immaculate Conception Church in Traverse City; Father Dennis Stilwell, former pastor, friend and Arlene's fellow traveler, will serve as celebrant. During the Mass a time will be set aside for friends and family to share memories of Arlene. Her family asks that people remember no one enjoyed a story more than Cookie. "She would want us to share our stories and memories." Family members will be present at the church before and after the Celebration Mass and encourage others to join them.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her name may be directed to Immaculate Conception Church, Third Order of Carmel, Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, or Munson Medical Center.
