Robert Joseph Brick
Died August 3, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - On August 3, 1999, Robert Joseph "Bob" Brick, our beloved husband, father, "bumpa", uncle, friend and coach was called home by his Saving Lord. A great patriarch to his family, he served his world's needs in every corner, on every table, to every needy person. As an inspiring example for doing the right thing, he was truly a "rock" to those who knew him. He nurtured, guided, and directed us with a strong and resolute presence; his determination and unwavering strength of character second only to his absolute faith in God.
Bob was born in Owatonna, Minn., on Jan. 14, 1922, to Anna and John Brick. He was preceded in death by his brothers, Jack and Jim; sisters, Kay and "Dode"; son, John, who passed away in 1987; and a daughter, Mary Ann, who died in infancy.
He was a veteran of World War II serving as a staff sergeant and front-line cook in North Africa, Sicily, Italy and Europe. He learned the culinary art of feeding hundreds of soldiers at a time, the best home cooking some of them had ever had. Bob believed that a well fed army would prevail in the "struggle for victory".
He met the love of his life and faithful best friend, MaryJean on a blind date while attending St. Mary's College in Winona, Minn. They married in 1947 in Traverse City where they raised six children and enjoyed 52 years of togetherness. Family was the center of his life. His children filled him with great pride and equally, too, they aspired to have him be proud of them. He was a beacon to them for which to guide their lives. He was blessed with eight grandchildren. Bob and MaryJean's loving relationship was built out of a mutual respect for each other. They allowed for the independence to grow yet maintained the close interdependence of family during times of need and celebration. Bob believed that the times of celebration should be numerous, and they could be as simple as a daily meal, each one to be enjoyed with great relish, a little seasoning and prayerful reflection on its blessings.
Bob's business activities centered largely around the cherry industry. He managed the processing, packaging, marketing and finances of the F & M Packing Co. and later Morgan/McCool Packing Co., both mainstays in the cherry industry of Traverse City for over 25 years. Later in life, his entrepreneur activities included the start up and overseeing of two businesses; Brick Wheels, a sport and bicycle shop, and Actron Steel, a steel fabricating company.
Bob's many civic activities included post commander of the American Legion, Boy Scout master, an officer for the St. Francis High School Building Committee, and a charter member of its Board of Education. He was a founding officer for the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Education Foundation, and an active officer for the St. Francis Parish Council and the new church construction committee. He was treasurer and charter member of the Traverse City chapter of the Ancient Order of Hibernians. He served on the Michigan Board of Special Olympics and as an officer on the Grand Traverse Housing Commission for the Aged.
It was with great pride that he helped to organize and serve as assistant coach to the very first St. Francis High School football team, from 1953 to 1962, exemplifying the current Gladiator tradition...of character, commitment and compassion.
He is survived by his inspiring and loving wife, MaryJean, and by his children; sons, Robert (Nancy) and Timothy of Traverse City, Terrence (Barbara) of Clarendon Hills, Ill.; and his daughters, Mariclare (Scott) Knowles of Traverse City and Rebecca (Mont) Reed of Spring Lake; grandchildren, Kristal, B.J., Betsy, Danny, Nora, Bricker, Timmy and Peter; as well as many nieces and nephews. He will be sorrowfully missed by all.
A celebration of his life will be held in the family tradition of the Irish, an "at home wake" with thoughtful reflection on his many years of joy and laughter. Visitation for family and friends will be held at the home of Bob and MaryJean, 406 E. Bay Blvd., on Friday from 4 to 8 p.m. and Saturday from 3 to 8 p.m. with a rosary at 8 p.m. Saturday. A funeral Mass will be held at 4 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. The Rev. James Gardiner will officiate. Following the service, friends are invited to gather at Bob and MaryJean's residence.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made to the Grand Traverse Area Community Living Endowment at 935 Barlow St., Traverse City, MI or to the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools Athletic Association at 123 11th Street, Traverse City, MI.

Berrien F. Thorn
Died August 26, 1999
SUTTONS BAY - Berrien F. Thorn, slipped away early in the morning Thursday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport. He had fallen into a hypoglycemic coma on April 21. Berrien was 50.
Musician and activist Pete Seeger called him "a maker and singer of songs that help bring people together with a flash of poetic insight." Folk singer U. Utah Phillips called him "the man who found Godot." Berrien described himself simply as an "itinerant musician and poet."
The former world traveler finally found home in a little cabin in Suttons Bay where he lived more than a dozen years.
He wrote about his neighbors in his "Easy Street" column that covered folk-life, visual arts, music, books, fishing, farming and other amusements for the Traverse City Record-Eagle from 1989 to 1996. Suttons Bay townsfolk once had a parade float in honor of their beloved eccentric, who was sometimes seen pushing down the street a lawn-fertilizer spreader with a "poetry wheel" attachment. It was Berrien's adaptation of the Buddhist prayer wheel and, as it spun, the people he met could snatch from its rim a slip of paper imprinted with one of a thousand poems:
infinity.
these days
fresh as flowers
we can not save them
yet they are always here
walking by the bay.
Berrien first glimpsed the Grand Traverse region from the West Arm of Grand Traverse Bay, arriving by boat as did settlers 150 years before him. He toured as a performer with the 1985 Greenpeace Campaign for the Great Lakes.
He came ashore to join Michigan artists in a "Water for Life Musical Celebration" at the Open Space in Traverse City. He took a liking to the community and, after fulfilling his musical engagements back east, moved to an apartment over Brady's and later to Suttons Bay.
While living in the Hudson River Valley, he was long involved in efforts to reclaim and protect the watershed. Berrien performed alongside Pete Seeger in his Clearwater's Great Hudson River Revival. He also played at New York state fund-raising events at Hudson River Museum, Yonkers; Geneseo Migrant Center, Inc., Geneseo; International Community Festival, Mount Vernon; Bluestone Marker Event, Woodstock; Neuberger Museum at State University of New York, Purchase; Harper & Row Employees UAW union District No. 85, Manhattan; and Annual Avant Garde Festival of New York.
In the Grand Traverse area, Berrien dove into the local music and arts scene with equal relish at fund-raisers for WNMC-FM, Gaia Johnson Scholarship, Celebration for Single Moms and their Admirants, museums, bookstores, music festivals, and arts groups. He opened for Utah Phillips at the Bay Theater in Suttons Bay. The record-release party for Berrien's 1994 album "My Life is Small Potatoes" benefited the Women's Resource Center Grand Traverse Area. He also recorded "Utility Music" in 1985.
Some of Berrien's Record-Eagle columns were reprinted as essays in clothbound collections of regional writers. Locally his newspaper stories drew responses from artists who learned about themselves while reading his reviews of their work, and from neighbors who chuckled when he revealed "subtle nuances of the mundane." He was known for trying to keep a sense of humor while struggling with fragile health and sobriety. A work-in-progress at the time of his death is the novel "The Wooing of the North."
"There are moments in the long spaces of every existence where time flows together. In that slight infinity, being grows big as the world or little as death," Berrien wrote. "We are all responsible to pay attention. That's it."
In March of 1994, Berrien returned to Woodstock to study Tibetan Buddhism with the abbot of Karma Triyana Dharmachakra, the Ven. Khenpo Karthar Rinpoche, as well as the Ven. Bardor Tulku Rinpoche. The monks at the North American monastery are burning an offering lamp for him and remembering him in dedication-of-merit practices for the traditional 49 days after his death.
Berrien earned a degree in fine art at the New York Phoenix School of Design in 1972 and continued study two years with Richard Coe, painter for the Brooklyn Botanical Gardens. He studied storytelling at Harvard Divinity School. He mastered the ukulele under the tutelage of vaudevillian virtuoso Roy Smeck, who called Berrien "Kahuna Kid! The young wizard." He operated an elevator, sang in prisons, streets and subways, and pursued his muse with grants from the Westchester Arts Council.
Born Berrien Thorn Fragos on Nov. 16, 1948, in New Rochelle, N.Y., he was the son of George and Carol June (Thorn) Fragos.
Surviving are his father and his brother, Russell Fragos, both of Armonk, N.Y., and thousands of friends the world over.
He was preceded in death by his mother.
Cremation has taken place. a memorial service will be held at noon Tuesday at Marina Park in the Village of Suttons Bay.
Arrangements were made by Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay.
