Obituaries
HERMAN BAUER, 90, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City. A full obituary will appear in Thursday's edition of the Record-Eagle.

BURNICE J. JUDAY, 80, of Central Lake, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at home. Burnice was born July 28, 1919.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 11, at the Casterline Funeral Home in Northville. Local arrangements were handled by Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
JOSEPH JOHN KOWALSKI, 71, of Free Soil and formerly of Manistee, died Monday, Aug. 30, 1999, at West Shore Hospital in Manistee.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Mt. Carmel Cemetery in Manistee.
GARY L. TUMMELSON, 51, of Torch Lake Township, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at his home.

Adam I. Harlukowicz
Died August 30, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Adam I. Harlukowicz, 85, of Traverse City and formerly of Gaylord, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Adam was born Jan. 3, 1914, in Gaylord and was raised in the Gaylord area. He served in the U.S. Navy during World War II on the USS Nicholas in the European Theatre. After the war, Adam moved to Detroit for several years and has lived in Traverse City the past five years. He was a member of the International Union of Operating Engineers Local 324 and had been a member of the Ecorse F.O.E. No. 2812.
He is survived by five children, Robert (Evelyn) of Coos Bay, Ore., Pamela (Alvin) Hamilton of Atlanta, Tom (Bonnie) of Gaylord, Patricia Stuck of Traverse City and Penny Cogswell of Gaylord; 11 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; a sister, Lena Smith of Gaylord; and a brother, Matthew (Marion) Harlukowicz of Gaylord.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Nelson Funeral Home in Gaylord and at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary Cathedral. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the church with Rev. John McCracken officiating. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Ecorse Eagles Club through the Nelson Funeral Home.
Robert E. 'Bob' Kutscher
Died August 30, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Robert E. "Bob" Kutscher, 80, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Nov. 10, 1918, in Massillon, Ohio, he was the son of George V. and Mary Louise (Caton) Kutscher. On Nov. 10, 1941, in Watertown, NY, he married Audrae M. Fischer.
Bob was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army in the 4th Armored Division in the Battle of the Bulge; he was discharged as a sergeant first class. Bob was a retired teacher having taught art and graphics, both in elementary and high schools in Massillon, Ohio and Monroe, Mich. He was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church, VFW Post 2780, American Legion, Michigan Retired School Personnel and National Education Association Retirees.
He is survived by his wife; daughter, Beth and her husband, Dr. Mark Jackson of Traverse City; grandchildren, David, Emily and Matthew Jackson - all of Traverse City; and a sister, Mary L. Decker of Brewster, Ohio.
He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Charles, Walter and Lester; and sisters, Elsie Eisenbrei and Ruth M. Manley.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at Bethlehem Lutheran Church. Friends may call at the time of service.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Kitchen Fund of Bethlehem Lutheran Church or Christ Lutheran Church in Monroe.

Gordon A. Montgomery
Died July 23, 1999
TWO HARBORS, Minn. - Gordon A. Montgomery, 71, of Two Harbors, died Friday, July 23, at his home.
Born July 2, 1928, in Kalkaska, Mich., he was the son of Alva and Genevieve (Ragan) Montgomery.
Gordon grew up in Kalkaska and graduated from Kalkaska High School in 1946. He was employed by U.S. Steel Great Lakes Fleet, starting as a deckhand in 1945 and retiring as captain in 1979. He was a member of the Loyal Order of Moose and the Masters and Pilots Association.
He is survived by a companion of many years, Kirsten C. Sundal of Two Harbors; son, Gordon E. of Esko, Minn.; five daughters, Pamela of Michigan, Madeline of Washington, Marianne and Michelle - both of California and Melina of Duluth; brother, Donald of California; two sisters, Martha Mae and Ruth - both of Michigan; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Visitation and services were held on Aug. 4 at Cavallin Funeral Home in Two Harbors with burial in Lakeview Cemetery, also in Two Harbors.
William Gary 'Pete' Peterson
Died August 30, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - William Gary "Pete" Peterson, 57, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 1, 1941, in Dearborn, he was the son of William F. and Jeanne E. (Skladzien) Peterson.
Prior to his retirement in 1994, he was employed at Century Specialties for 24 years. He enjoyed sports, especially the Detroit Lions and Detroit Red Wings.
He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patricia A. of Traverse City; three sons, Bill (Catherine) Peterson of Bellaire, David (Kelley) Peterson of Traverse City and Michael (Leanne) Peterson of Alden; two grandchildren, Jordan and Morgan; a sister, Beverly DuQuette of Dearborn; and many wonderful friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Dean Bailey from Central United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will be in Bohemian Cemetery on Old Mission Peninsula.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Interlochen Arts Academy where a memorial fund in his name will be established.
Edward E. Pike
Died August 27, 1999
GAYLORD - Edward E. Pike, 82, of Gaylord, died Friday at Otsego Memorial Hospital.
Edward was born March 4, 1917, in Detroit, and was raised in the Dearborn area. As a boy, he was an active Eagle Scout. He graduated in 1939 from Albion College with a degree in business administration. While attending college, he was a member of Alpha-Tau Omega Fraternity.
In 1941, in Flint, he married Frances Henny. In 1942, during World War II, he served in the U.S. Army Aircorps as a B-17 pilot and a second lieutenant.
In 1952 Edward moved to Traverse City and owned and operated Acme Office Supply until 1964. While living in Traverse City, he was very active in the community; he worked on the planning commission, was a charter member of the Grand Traverse Civic Players and was honored as "Boss of the Year" by the Traverse City Area Jaycees. After Edward left his business he rejoined Columbia Ribbon and Carbon Co. of Glen Cove, N.Y. In 1980 he retired from that company as executive vice president and moved to Gaylord where he had been a longtime summer resident.
Edward was a member of First United Methodist Church-Gaylord. He enjoyed golfing, hunting, fishing fishing, participating in winter sports and restoring antique automobiles. Most of all, Edward loved his family.
Survivors include his wife, Frances of Gaylord; his children, Mary Ellen (Richard) Wilson of Hudson, Ohio, Edward (Kathleen) of East Grand Rapids, and Linda (Daniel) McGee of Saginaw; eight grandchildren, Amy McCarthy, Richard and Mark Wilson, Cecily, Lauren, and Ellen Pike, and Daniel and Margaret McGee; three great-grandchildren, Carrie, Christopher, and Natalie; and a brother, Dr. Donald G. Pike of Traverse City.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at First United Methodist Church-Gaylord; the Rev. John Naile will officiate.
The family would be appreciative if memorials were directed to Otsego Memorial Hospital or Hospice of Michigan through the Nelson Funeral Home, 135 N. Center, Gaylord, MI 49735.
Julia Potter
Died August 25, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Julia Potter passed away Wednesday after a brief illness.
Julia Sanders was born April 22, 1911, in Vinton, Iowa. On Dec. 19, 1928, she married Norman "Pat" Potter. Together they founded Potters' bakery which has been in the Potter family for three generations.
Survivors include a daughter, Roselyn of Tucson, Ariz.; two sons, Richard of Elk Rapids and James of Gaylord; 16 grandchildren; and many great-grandchildren.
Julia was preceded in death by a son, Jerry, and her husband of 57 years, Norman.
At her request, no funeral services will be held.
Memorials may be directed to the First Church of Christ Scientist in Traverse City.
Erma G. Shonk
Died August 31, 1999
BELLAIRE - Erma G. Shonk, 81, of Bellaire, died Tuesday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Born Sept. 18, 1917, in Schoumberg, she was the daughter of Robert and Ruthella (Richner) Swanson. On May 22, 1940, she married John E. Shonk.
A Forest Home Township resident since 1938, she was a member of the Bellaire Wesleyan Church and had worked for ITT in Bellaire for many years.
She is survived by her husband; three children, Dorothy E. (Stephen J.) Gould and Charles R. (Mary) Shonk - both of Bellaire and John A. Shonk of Traverse City; two brothers, Alfred (Margaret) Swanson and Robert Swanson - both of Traverse City; a sister, Eleonore (Roger) Favorite of Cedar; ten grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday at the Bellaire Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the funeral home with Pastor Bruce Standfest and Pastor Dallas Powell officiating. Interment will be in Lakeview Cemetery in Bellaire.

Marian R. Trager
Died August 29, 1999
SPRING HILLS, Fla. - Marian R. Trager, of Spring Hills died Sunday in Spring Hills.
She was born in 1912, in Beal City, Mich.
Marian was a loving and devoted mother and grandmother. She worked as a secretary for Cherry Knoll School and Lynch Acoustic Tile and owned an antique shop, This Old Barn, with her daughter Susan for many years. Marian retired to Florida and worked as a volunteer in the community library. She loved gardening and playing Scrabble.
Survivors include her children, Susan (Walter) Feiger of Traverse City, Douglas Trager of Arkansas, Rita Robbins of New Mexico, Paulyn Nuismer of Pennsylvania, and Rebecca Carstens of Ireland; sisters, Edna Davis and Leona Parsch; a brother, Victor Boge; 16 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Marian was preceded in death by her husband, Edwin Trager, in 1969.
A memorial service will be held at a later date.
PEARL HARRIGAN, 88, of Buckley, died Wednesday, Sept. 1, 1999, at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held Saturday at the Buckley Wayside Chapel, time of service is pending.
KENNETH RAY STRAIGHT, 53, of Mancelona, died Tuesday, Aug. 31, 1999, at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center.
A memorial service will be held at 7 p.m. Friday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona.
Herman Bauer
Died August 31, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Herman Bauer, 90, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Bortz Health Care in Traverse City.
Born Sept. 5, 1908, in Lincoln, Neb., he was the son of Conrad and Margaret Bauer. On Sept. 2, 1933, in Chicago, he married Dorothy Blacklaw.
Herman was a retired social worker. He was employed by the YMCA in Detroit for 15 years and USO in Detroit for 20 years, retiring in 1971. He lived in the East Lansing and Detroit areas until 1990 and the Traverse City area for the past six months. He was a member of the Monthieth Presbyterian Church in Detroit and First Presbyterian Church in Farmington Hills.
He is survived by his wife of 66 years; daughter, Margaret (William) White of Kewadin; son, Charles (Lynn) Bauer of Elk Rapids; sister, Martha Zeismer of Lapeer; a brother, Jack Bauer of Sarasota, Fla.; granddaughter, Kirsten Alexander of Wayne; and a grandson, Maxwell Bauer of Elk Rapids.
He was preceded in death by his parents and six brothers and sisters.
No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are being handled by Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
Edna Jane Smith
Died August 31, 1999
SUTTONS BAY - Edna Jane Smith, 97, of Suttons Bay, died Tuesday.
Born Dec. 31, 1901, in Hershey, she was the daughter of Michael James McGovern and Alma Winnifred Allen. On Oct. 8, 1924, in Traverse City, she married Alfred Adolph Smith, who preceded her in death on June 15, 1963.
Edna lived all her married life in Suttons Bay. She and her husband owned and operated a cherry and apple farm. For many years she was a librarian in Suttons Bay and operated the Smith Sandy Shores Motel. She loved reading, knitting, playing cards, sewing and visiting with her children and grandchildren. She was a member of the Suttons Bay Women's Club and a loyal supporter of the Suttons Bay Library.
Edna is survived by seven children, J. Duane (Barbara) Smith, Leon (Jane) Smith, Virginia (Hugh) Cook, Janet (John) Morrison, Lynn Smith, Gerald (Cathy) Smith and Harley (Bonnie) Smith; a sister, Ellen McGovern; 34 grandchildren; and 57 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; three brothers, Markey, Bernard and Milne McGovern; and one grandchild.
A memorial gathering will be from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 12, at Edna's home on South Shore Drive in Suttons Bay. Burial will be in the Keswick Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Suttons Bay Area Public Library.

Frank Gerard Strehl, Sr.
Died August 30, 1999
NORTHPORT - Frank Gerard Strehl, Sr., 78, of Northport, died Monday at Leelanau Memorial Heath Center.
Born July 13, 1921, in Detroit, he was the son of Michael and Matilda (Ellert) Strehl. In 1941, in Toledo, Ohio, he married Geraldine F. Hale, who preceded him in death on Feb. 11, 1994.
Frank served in the U.S. Army during World War II. He was employed as a carpenter and was a member of St. Wenceslaus Church in Gills Pier.
He is survived by a son, Frank (Stephanie) Strehl, Jr. of Northport; daughter, Charlotte (Michael) Monaghan of Harper Woods; five grandchildren, Francis B., Nathan M., Catharine Ann, Michael P. and Robert J.; one great-grandchild, Natalie Grace; and a sister, Betty McGill of Phoenix, Ariz.
Graveside services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Beechwood Cemetery with Rev. Reynaldo Garcia officiating.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to Leelanau Memorial Health Center.

Gary L. Tummelson
Died August 31, 1999
TORCH RIVER - Gary L. Tummelson, 51, of Torch River, died Tuesday at his home.
Born Sept. 13, 1947, in Champaign, Ill., he was the son of Hurshal and Jo Elaine (Carlson) Tummelson. In 1970, in Traverse City, he married Sally Faris.
Gary served in the U.S. Army from 1971 to 1973, during which time he was stationed in Hawaii. He resided in this area for the past 24 years, moving from Chicago. He was the CEO of Michigan Health and Life Group in Acme for the past 12 years. He was also a Milton Township trustee for the past 12 years and served as zoning administrator for the past six months. Gary enjoyed landscape gardening, swimming and spending time on Torch Lake.
He is survived by his wife, Sally, of Torch River; a daughter, Katy Tummelson of Chicago; a son, Jeff Tummelson of Hastings; his parents of Champaign, Ill.; three sisters, Gwen (Mike) Roughton of Lancaster, Pa., JoEllen (Bill) Bloch of Monticello, Ill. and Nancy (Mike) Karr of Red Feather, Colo.; and maternal grandmother, Helene Carlson of Peoria, Ill.
A memorial service will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with Rev. Dr. Dan Herlein officiating. The family will greet friends from 10 a.m. until the time of service. Burial will be at Milton Township Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Milton Township Park Fund.

June M. Simerson Zeitz
Died August 30, 1999
MESICK - June M. Simerson Zeitz, 73, of Mesick, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City with her family by her side.
Born Sept. 26, 1925, in Cadillac, she was the daughter of William and Dorothy (Pinkney) Allison. On March 2, 1943, in Flint, she married Edward Simerson, who preceded her in death on Dec. 18, 1978. She married Albert Zeitz, Jr. on Aug. 14, 1982, in Traverse City.
June resided in Flint, Cadillac and Traverse City prior to moving to the Mesick area. She was employed with several companies before retiring from Montgomery Wards in Traverse City. She enjoyed camping, traveling, flower gardening and reading.
She is survived by her husband, Albert; children, James (Judy) Simerson of Peoria, Ariz., Darrel (Linda) Simerson of Mesick and Dorothy (Jack) Bondy of Detroit; three stepchildren, Terry (Robin) Zeitz of Brighton, Nancy Magruady of Honolulu and John Zeitz of San Francisco; sister-in-law, Gerry Allison of Cadillac; 11 grandchildren; five stepgrandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and two step-great-grandchildren.
She was also preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Ray.
The family will receive visitors from 5 to 8 p.m. today at 214 Adelbert Street in Mesick. Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the Faith Lutheran Church in Mesick with Pastor Roger Gallert officiating. Burial will be in the Lake City Cemetery.
Memorial contributions may be directed to the Mesick Rescue Squad.

DORALDEANE J. BARRATT, 77, of Glen Lake, died Thursday morning, Sept. 2, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.

Pearl Harrigan
Died September 1, 1999
BUCKLEY - Pearl Harrigan, 88, of Buckley, died Wednesday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
Born Feb. 20, 1911, in Berne, Ind., she was the daughter of Thomas and Mary (Runyon) Lhamon. On March 28, 1928, in Buckley, she married Thane Harrigan.
Pearl moved to Buckley as a young girl and has spent her life there. She was a lifetime member of the Buckley Wayside Chapel and taught Sunday school there for almost 30 years. She also served as president of the Christian Women's Club for several years and was always available to help with church suppers, bazaars and other events.
She is survived by four daughters, Helen (Leo) Dalzell, Janet Taylor and Molly (John) McCombs - all of Traverse City and Mary Ann (Robert) Welch of Glenwood, Ark.; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband in 1981 and eight brothers and sisters.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at Buckley Wayside Chapel with Pastor Larry Ross officiating. Burial will be in Cornell Cemetery in Buckley.

Julie J. Marble
Died August 26, 1999
ST. LOUIS, Mo. - Julie J. Marble, 29, of St. Louis and formerly of Boyne City, Mich. and Traverse City, Mich., died Sunday at her apartment.
Julie enjoyed moving to new and exciting places and meeting many people. She also enjoyed spending time on her computer and singing karaoke. She was currently attending Forest Park Community College in St. Louis where she was studying business and computer science.
Julie leaves behind her sisters, Melissa (Marble) Pickerd of Grand Rapids, Mich., Linda (Mike) McCleary of Boyne City and Tracy (Kohn) Fisher of Kalkaska; a brother, Jeffrey (Barb) Mania of Virginia Beach, Va.; stepfather, Ross (Carol) LaCross of Charlotte, Mich.; grandmother, Ruth Witte of Arizona; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her mother, Mary (Witte) LaCross, on Jan. 1, 1987.
A private family memorial service will be held on Saturday at Greenwood Cemetery in Petoskey with Rev. Robert Faulman officiating.
Millicent 'Millie' Murlin
Died September 2, 1999
FRANKFORT - Millicent "Millie" Murlin, 83, of Frankfort, died Thursday morning at The Maples.
Millie was born March 13, 1916, in Aylmer, Ontario, Canada. She was a resident of Frankfort since 1949. On June 6, 1945, she married Joe Murlin, who preceded her in death in 1954.
Millie had been a resident of The Maples since January, 1996, where she was a member of the chime choir. She was also a member of the First Congregational Church in Frankfort and was most proud of being a United States citizen. She is survived by a host of friends and loving caregivers.
Cremation has taken place and a memorial service will be announced at a later date.
Those planning an expression of sympathy are asked to consider either the First Congregational Church or The Maples, both in Frankfort.
The family was served by the Frankfort Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes.
Larry Kurt Rade
Died August 31, 1999
BELLAIRE - Larry Kurt Rade, 48, of Bellaire, died unexpectedly of natural causes on Tuesday at his home.
Larry was given to his parents, Kurt and Mae (McFarland) Rade of Bellaire and Long Key, Fla., who survive him, on June 1, 1951, in Highland Park.
Larry served in the National Guard and his greatest passions were his family, playing golf with his dad and eating his mom's good cooking. He survived a near fatal closed-head injury from a motorcycle accident in 1970. His family feels the last 29 years of his life were a miracle. His family and all his many friends will dearly miss his giving and loving personality, his strong hugs and kisses, his great sense of humor and laugh. They will dearly miss their "Uncle Eda" or "Crebbs" and "golf buddy."
He is also survived by his loving sisters, Linda (Don) Baker of Bellaire, Lana (Jim) Wetherill of Washington, Laura (Dale) Newman of Eastport; and a brother, Loren Rade of Bellaire. He was also blessed to have many nieces and nephews.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday at Lakeview Cemetery in Torch Lake Township with Rev. Jean Thornell officiating.
Memorials in Larry's name may be made to his father, Kurt Rade, P.O. Box 1044, Bellaire, MI 49615.

Eleanora Rossi Shambaugh
Died July 15, 1999
WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Eleanora (Mickey) Rossi Shambaugh, 76, died Thursday, July 15, at her home.
Originally from Iron Mountain, she received her nursing degree in Chicago. For many years she lived in Lake Forest, Ill., where she raised two children with her husband, Philip, a prominent surgeon practicing in Lake Forest and Chicago.
Upon retirement, they split their time between their family cabin in Old Mission and successive homes in the Ocean Reef Club, Key Largo, Fla., and La Jolla, Calif. After Philips death, Eleanora moved to Rossmoor, Walnut Creek, to be near her children.
Eleanor was a renowned horticulturist and a member of the Friendly Garden Club in Traverse City, Mich. She was also an avid bridge player and opera lover.
Survivors include her son, Stephen Rossi Shambaugh and daughter, Cynthia Shambaugh Ishimatsu - both of Lafayette, Calif.; her stepson, Philip Wells Shambaugh of Brookline, Mass.; stepdaughter, Sarah Shambaugh Tull of Charlotte, N.C.; and a granddaughter.
A commemorative service was held Aug. 16 in Old Mission.
LAUVERN G. BETHUY, 82, of Kalkaska, died Thursday, Sept. 2, 1999, at the home of her niece in Anchorville. He was born on Sept. 27, 1916.

GLEN ARBOR - Doraldeane J. Barratt, 77, of Glen Arbor, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Jan. 21, 1922, in Blissfield, she was the daughter of Oscar and Lucy (Davis) Seeburger. On Dec. 28, 1956, in Goshen, Ind., she married Willard J. Barratt, who survives.
Doraldeane graduated from Blissfield High School in 1939 and was a resident of the Glen Arbor area for the past 44 years. She was an excellent softball player and bowler and enjoyed crossword puzzles. A former member of the Glen Arbor Women's Club, she also served on Glen Arbor's township election board for many years. She was employed at Crystal Harbor Marina on Glen Lake for several years and for 30 years Doraldeane and her husband were involved in the building business in the Glen Arbor area.
She is also survived by two stepsons, Thomas W. (Susan) Barratt of Metamora and Michael L. (Anita) Barratt of Bloomfield Hills; a stepdaughter, Sharon L. (Lowell) White of Edition, Ga.; seven stepgrandchildren; and two nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; a sister, Alberta Peter; and a brother, Joe Seeburger.
A private family gathering is planned. Memorial contributions may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

TRAVERSE CITY - Mary Joan Phillips, 79, of Traverse City and Stuart, Fla., died suddenly at her home Friday morning.
Born May 25, 1920, in Syracuse, NY, she was the daughter of Timothy and Catherine (Gallagher) Shea. She was the devoted wife of Thomas J. Phillips for 55 years, having been married on Feb. 27, 1943 at St. Lucy Catholic Church in Syracuse, NY. He preceded her in death on Feb. 14, 1999.
Joan was a resident of Michigan for 53 years and spent her summers in Traverse City and her winters in Stuart, Fla. She was an avid golfer and an active member of the Traverse City Golf and Country Club and the Yacht and Country Club of Stuart, Fla. She was a past member of the Bloomfield Hills Country Club and the Detroit Golf Club where she was a past winner of both the Grandmother and the Mary Pat Tournaments. Joan was an active fund-raiser and supporter of various Catholic charities and was an active fund-raiser for the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation. She was a life member and current Stuart Florida Chapter president of the Christ Child Society. She belonged to St. Joseph's Parish in Florida, Christ the King Parish in Acme and was a former member of St. Regis Parish in Birmingham.
Joan was the loving mother of three children, T.J. (Judith) Phillips, Maureen (Michael) Murphy and Joan (Gordon) Bahl; the grandmother of 11, Kerry (Sean) Doyle, Kelly Bahl, Mary Pat Bahl, Erin Bahl, Ann Phillips, Meghan Phillips, Katie Phillips, Thomas Phillips, David Murphy, Shea Murphy and Patricia Murphy; she was also the great-grandmother of Grace Doyle. She is also survived by a brother, John Shea of Syracuse, NY and a sister, Rita Walker of Syracuse, NY.
She was also preceded in death by a sister, Teresa Harnett.
The Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Monday at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme with the Rev. Father Edwin Thome as celebrant. Friends may call at the church from 1 p.m. until the time of the Mass.

TRAVERSE CITY - Margaret A. Knapp, 87, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Saturday.
Born July 6, 1912, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Frank and Emma (Houdek) Stanek. On Nov. 6, 1937, at St. Francis Catholic Church, she became the wife of George B. Knapp, who preceded her in death in 1978.
Margaret was a graduate of Traverse City's St. Francis High School and attended Aquinas College in Grand Rapids. At an early age, she was very involved in the cherry industry, working with Burkhart Company, a pioneer in cherry products. She also was employed by Michigan Consolidated Gas Company. Later she became a bookkeeper for Kiblinger, Mavis-McGuffin Insurance Agencies. Having a very strong work ethic, Margaret was a very exacting person and believed in doing things right the first time. Even in her last days, she would frequently ask what she could do to help and be useful. She was a wonderful homemaker and loved cooking and baking and enjoying fine food. She loved her home and was dedicated to her family of origin and her family of choice. Margaret also enjoyed traveling through northern Michigan with her son, Jay, visiting many interesting places and also enjoyed spending time with her daughter in the Chicago area. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church and its Altar Society. In years past she was a Girl Scout leader, chairman of the third voting precinct of Traverse City and took a leading role in the city's March of Dimes. Margaret, while outwardly reserved, had an independent, feisty. fun-filled nature that gave her family and friends much enjoyment.
She is survived by her son, Jay P. Knapp of Traverse City; her daughter, Connie M. Knapp of Glenview, Ill., a sister, Virginia B. McLean of Traverse City; a niece, Sue Ann Helm of Indianapolis, Ind.; and a nephew, Steven J. McLean of Traverse City.

THOMPSONVILLE - Lena Lung, 99, of Thompsonville, died Saturday at Manistee Medical Care Facility in Manistee.
Born Aug. 3, 1900, in Joyfield Township, she was the daughter of Gus and Caroline (Nelson) Linngreen.
Lena was a previous owner of Sells Hotel in Beulah and clothing stores in Thompsonville and Manistee. She was also a caregiver and restored old homes. Lena enjoyed gardening, flowers, making dolls and picking fruit and berries.
Survivors include two stepchildren, Carl (Grace) Lung Jr. of Cadillac and Ardith (Cyrus) Hughes of Frankfort, and several nieces and nephews
Lena was preceded in death by her brothers and sisters, Charles, Adolph, Theodore, Herman, Frieda, Lily and Anna.
Visitation will be held from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at Bennett-Bartz Funeral Home in Beulah. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Joyfield Township Cemetery.
Francis E. 'Ed' Mannor

MESICK - Francis E. "Ed" Mannor, 89, of Mesick, died Friday.
Born Aug. 6, 1910, in Harrietta, he was the son of Thomas and Ellen (Santure) Mannor. On March 30, 1935, at St. Mary's Catholic Church, he married Lucille E. Skellett.
A lifelong resident of the Mesick/Buckley area, he was a farmer and also was employed at the Traverse City Psychiatric Hospital for ten years, retiring in 1975. He was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Hannah, the farm bureau, State Employees Retirees Association, the Old Engine and Threshers Club and the Two Cylinder Club, both in Buckley, the Buckley Retirees Club and DADS of Foreign Wars.
He is survived by his wife, Lucille E. Mannor; children, James (Marguerite) Mannor of Buckley, Wayne (Marina) Mannor of Stockton, Calif., Don (Carol) Mannor of Interlochen, Joan (Frank) Weller of Paradise, Rosellen (Fred) Ingersoll of Mesick, Mary (Robert) Butler of Traverse City and John (Lynda) Mannor of Mesick; 33 grandchildren; 91 great-grandchildren; four great-great-grandchildren; a sister, Pearl Kellogg of West Branch; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; sisters, Florence Hill, Bernice Carlson, Gladys Larcom and Dorothy "Tootsie" Overmeyer; brothers, Nelson, Charles, Harvey, Leo and Leonard Mannor; two grandchildren; and one great-grandchild.

CENTRAL LAKE - Marvin "Marv" Shooks, 74, of Central Lake, died Saturday at Northern Michigan Hospital in Petoskey.
Born Oct. 16, 1924, in Central Lake Township, he was the son of Sylvester and Katherine (Aardema) Shooks.
On May 10, 1946, he married Doris Jean Wynsma in Banks Township. They made their home on the Shooks Family Farm in Central Lake Township.
Marv owned and operated Shooks Brothers Farm with his brother, Versal, until 1988.
He was a member of Belltower Reformed Church and sang in the choir for many years. Marv enjoyed gardening, especially flowers, and spending time with his grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Doris Jean; children, Rhonda (David) Lemma of Ellsworth and Houghton Lake, Dale (Darla) Shooks of Central Lake, Daryl (Cheryl) Shooks of Central Lake, and Joel Shooks of Redondo Beach, Calif.; nine grandchildren; one great-grandson; a brother, Versal (Chris) Shooks of Central Lake; a sister, Winifred Green of Charlevoix; and several nieces and nephews.
Marv was preceded in death by his brother, Walter Shooks and two sisters, Margaret Essenberg and infant Martha Shooks.

FLINT - Ronald J. Mihulka, 55, of Flint died Saturday at the University of Michigan Medical Center in Ann Arbor.
He was born Feb. 23, 1944, and had lived in the Flint area for the last 37 years.
Ronald was a skilled trades person at Buick Motor Division where he had been employed for the past 37 years.
A veteran of the U.S. Army Airborne Division, he was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Post No. 4087 and American Legion Post No. 0342. A member of Holy Rosary Catholic Church in Flint, he also belonged to the Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 3589, the Loyal Order of Moose No. 2344 and the Croation-Slovene Home.
Survivors include two daughters, Christine (Darren) Hosmer of Grand Ledge and Cynthia Mihulka of Washington, D.C.; a son, Mark (Keri) Mihulka of Texas; three grandchildren, Allison, Matthew, and Ashton; and a sister, Bette Lou Reamer of Traverse City.
Ronald was preceded in death by his wife, Wilda Sue, in 1991, and his parents.

CEDAR - James Francis Brzezinski, 55, of Cedar, died Tuesday at his home.
Born June 28, 1944, in Cedar, he was the son of Joseph F. and Agnes C. (Popa) Brzezinski. On Sept. 30, 1967, in Traverse City, he married Nancy Kay Rosinski, who survives.
James was a member of Holy Rosary Church where he was a lecturer and Eucharist Minister. He was also a member of Cedar Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Cedar Polkafest Committee, former board member of Associated Builders and Contractors, past president of the Electrical Contractor's Association, member of Square D National Regional Board, member of the Knights of Columbus and former member of Immaculate Conception Parish of Traverse City.
He is also survived by his father of Cedar; two sons, Paul Joseph Brzezinski of Royal Oak and Matthew Jay Brzezinski of Cedar; and six sisters and brothers, Leonard Brzezinski of Lansing, Mary (Jack) Forster-Snyder of Indianapolis, Ind., JoAnn (Thomas) Swarz of Cadillac, Patricia (Ronald) Hokenstad of Larksburg, Colo., Jon (Anne) Brzezinski of Suttons Bay and Ann Marie Brzezinski of Indianapolis, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes C. Brzezinski, on July 26, 1994, and a brother, Joseph Antoni.

RAPID CITY - George P. Clary, 86, of Rapid City and formerly of Elk Rapids, died Sunday at War Memorial Hospital in Sault Ste. Marie.
Born May 16, 1913, in Erie, Pa., he was the son of Arthur B. and Mary (Valentine) Clary. In 1936 he married Amy Scott, who preceded him in death in 1981. He later married Alice Kimball in 1982, who survives.
George was employed by Johnson-Randell Company and F & M Packing Company, both of Traverse City. He later worked for Elk Rapids Packing Company as a plant manager for 44 years and retired in 1979. An avid hunter, George enjoyed spending time at his cabin in the upper peninsula. He loved socializing with people and gardening. He was a past member of the Elk Rapids Fire Department.
In addition to his wife of Rapid City, he is also survived by a daughter, Marianne Larson of Ludington; five sons, Tom Clary of Kingsley, Donald Kimball of Oxford, Conn., Gerald (Nancy) Kimball of Ludington, Dale (Judy) Kimball of Battle Creek and David (Winnie) Kimball of Ludington; special nephew, Richard (Maxine) Clary of Martin; 12 grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; three brothers, Raymond, Wes and Harold; and one sister, Mary.

Edward C. Minch

MANCELONA - Edward C. Minch, 80, of Mancelona, died Monday at his home.
Born July 28, 1919, in Fontana, Kan., he was the son of August Carl and Nona Ruth (Vanderpete) Minch. On April 22, 1940, in Norton, Kan., he married Donnis R. Lemman.
During World War II, Edward served on the U.S.C.G. Aquarius, an attack transport that served in nine invasions in the Pacific Theater. After the war, he served at various locations including the U.S.C.G. Sundew, a cutter stationed in Charlevoix. Edward was part of the Sundew crew that rescued the only two survivors of the freighter Carl D. Bradley which sank in 1958. He retired as a chief boatswin mate on May 1, 1965. He was very proud of his 20 years of service in the United States Coast Guard. Edward moved to Mancelona in 1997 after living 32 years in Greeley, Colo. He was a member of the Mancelona Baptist Church and he enjoyed fishing, driving semi-trucks, traveling, woodworking and fixing things. He also was a Chicago Cubs fan.
He is survived by his wife, Donnis R. Minch of Mancelona; one son, Larry (Carolyn Kohn) Minch of Charlevoix; three grandchildren, Timothy Edward (Renee Allen) Minch of Mancelona, Kevin Harold (Bonnie Thompson) Minch of Traverse City and Jennifer Lynn Minch of Traverse City; four great-grandchildren, Alyssa Nicole Minch of Mancelona, Alexis Noelle Minch of Mancelona, Margaret Rose Minch of Traverse City and Ryan Patrick Minch of Traverse City; one brother, Harry (Connie) Karr of Greeley, Colo.; and two sisters, Catherine Wilson of Biggers, Ark. and Betty (Ray) Schump of Greeley, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother, Harold.

SUTTONS BAY - Donald Herbert Asmus, 62, of Suttons Bay, died Wednesday at his home.
Born Oct. 24, 1936, in Chicago, he was the son of Herbert G. and Lillian A. (Brook) Asmus. On Sept. 7, 1957, in La Port, Ind., he married Nancy Joy O'Keefe, who survives.
Donald moved from Cincinnati to Suttons Bay in 1996. He worked as a program manager at General Electric for over 30 years. He loved sailing, barber shopping and golf.
He is also survived by his daughter, Denise DeLynn (David W.) Reid of Long Beach, Calif.; son, David Duane Asmus of Cincinnati; sister, Alice Mooi of Winamac, Ind. and a brother, Charles Asmus of Snohomish, Wash.
Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Friday at Martinson Funeral Home of Suttons Bay with Rev. James Beadle officiating. Friends may call at the funeral home from 1 p.m. Friday until the time of service.

CEDAR - James Francis Brzezinski, 55, of Cedar, died Tuesday at his home.
Born June 28, 1944, in Cedar, he was the son of Joseph F. and Agnes C. (Popa) Brzezinski. On Sept. 30, 1967, in Traverse City, he married Nancy Kay Rosinski, who survives.
James was the owner of Brezin Electric. He was a member of Holy Rosary Church where he was a lecturer and Eucharist Minister and a member and former president of the Pastoral Council. Jim spent the last two years researching and doing an updated site plan for Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Isadore. He was also a member of Cedar Chamber of Commerce, past president of the Cedar Polkafest Committee, former board member of Associated Builders and Contractors, past president of the Electrical Contractor's Association, member of Square D National Regional Board, member of the Knights of Columbus and former member of Immaculate Conception Parish of Traverse City.
He is also survived by his father of Cedar; two sons, Paul Joseph Brzezinski of Royal Oak and Matthew Jay Brzezinski of Cedar; and six sisters and brothers, Leonard Brzezinski of Lansing, Mary (Jack) Forster-Snyder of Indianapolis, Ind., JoAnn (Thomas) Swarz of Cadillac, Patricia (Ronald) Hokenstad of Larksburg, Colo., Jon (Anne) Brzezinski of Suttons Bay and Ann Marie Brzezinski of Indianapolis, Ind.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Agnes C. Brzezinski, on July 26, 1994, and a brother, Joseph Antoni.

AUSTIN, Texas - Jeneen Kroupa, 26, of Austin Texas and formerly of Newfane, NY, entered into rest suddenly Thursday in Balmorhea, Texas.
She is survived by her parents, Gene and Sandra Kroupa of Newfane, NY; two sisters, Michelle Kroupa of Newfane and Danielle Kroupa of Pittsburgh, Pa.; granddaughter of Josephine Lacki of Beleview, Fla., Vernon "Buff" Kroupa and Janet Kroupa of Pembroke Pines, Fla. and the late John Lacki. She is also survived by several aunts and uncles.

E.J. Zamorski

MESICK - E.J. Zamorski, 72, of Mesick, passed away at his home on Wednesday after a four month battle with cancer.
E.J. was born on April 14, 1927, in Chicago. Also known as "Skee", he graduated from Wells High School in Chicago. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Force from July, 1945 to December, 1946. In 1950, he earned his B.A. from Adrian College with a major in psychology. In 1954, he received his M.S.W. from Wayne State University with a major in psychiatric social work and in 1961 a second master's degree in clinical psychology from Wayne State University.
Initially, Skee was a caseworker and supervisor with Oakland Child Guidance Clinic in Pontiac. Soon he branched off into private practice, which was to be his primary professional setting. Offices were established in Birmingham and Southfield. During his professional career, Skee was consultant to the medical staff at Children's Hospital in Detroit, supervised psychology and social work interns from Wayne State University, presented at many professional conferences, was a guest lecturer at Wayne, presented programs on W.S.U. radio and was a consultant to several school systems in the metropolitan Detroit area. Skee was a member of many professional organizations and was licensed by the State of Michigan as Clinical Social Worker, Marriage Counselor, Limited Licensed Psychologist and was a Board Certified Diplomate in social work.
Skee has long been known in the Tri-County area as a highly skilled therapist in all areas of psychological assistance with a full age range of clients. In particular, he has been very successful with youngsters and teenagers, assisting hundreds of children and their families to better, more productive lives.
Skee put as much enthusiasm and effort into his hobbies and home as he did into his professional life. Astronomy and collecting geological specimens were favorites and he was also an avid stamp collector. The move to the Mesick area in 1996 and building the retirement home in the country gave Skee a new area of interest. With his trusty chainsaw, he created a park-like setting for the red pines surrounding the house.
Survivors include his loving wife, Olwyn; son, Glenn (Kathleen) of Beverly Shores, Ind.; son, Mark of Dexter; and many many dear friends who have been so supportive during the past few months.
Those planning an expression of sympathy may wish to consider a memorial contribution to the American Cancer Society or the Hospice of Michigan.

TRAVERSE CITY - Lawrence T. Hart, 86, of Traverse City, went to be at home with his Lord on Wednesday as a result of injuries sustained in a car/pedestrian accident.
Born July 25, 1913, in Northport, he was the son of William H. and Rose B. (Purkiss) Hart. He was a resident of the area all of his life and was known as Grandpa Hart to many.
Lawrence was a master plumber and worked with his father at William Hart and Son's Plumbing in 1920 to 1955. From 1955 to 1975 he worked at the Traverse City State Hospital. He was a member of the First Church of the Nazarene and was instrumental in establishing Bayview Wesleyan Church where he was a member for 50 years. Lawrence enjoyed hunting and fishing.
He is survived by a son, Donald (Kaye) Hart of Traverse City; daughter, Jean (Roger) Young of Traverse City; stepdaughters, Phyllis (George) Austgen of Spring Lake and Roberta Sommer of Granger, Ind.; stepson, Gerald (Carol) Warner of Gunn Lake; grandchildren, Debra Hart, Brian (Phyllis) Hart, Sharon (Al) Weiselberg, Julie Telfor, Renee (Robert) Arteaga, Wendy Young and Anita Young - all of the Traverse City area; several stepgrandchildren; and eight great-great-grandchildren.

WELLSTON - Dennis Michael Morin died Monday, Aug. 30, in a boating accident. Denny is survived by his wife of 15 years, Rebecca Houck Morin; his three children, Jaime David (Ambi) Dudash of Ann Arbor, Jule Carpenter Morin and Naomi Joy Morin of Wellston; his grandmother, Ruth E. Carpenter; his mother, Billie Jean Morin; his brother, Kim (Ann) Morin; his sister, Toni Morin (Bill) Clous of Kingsley; and many aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces and nephews.
Born in Flint on Jan. 5, 1954, Denny grew up in Kingsley and graduated from Kingsley High School in 1972. He was employed as a corrections officer at the Oaks Correctional Facility in Manistee.
Denny was an avid outdoorsman. He was generous and kind. Denny will truly be missed by his family and friends.

John Philip Pawloski, Sr.

TRAVERSE CITY - John Philip Pawloski Sr., a U.S. Coast Guard veteran, passed away Thursday at Birchwood Nursing Center after an extended illness.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Lorenia; his mother, Helen; his sons, John Jr. (Elizabeth), Anthony and Andrew; stepdaughters, Janet Bowman and Sherry (Vernon) Jones; and five grandchildren. He is also survived by his sister, Patricia; brothers, Raymond, David (Sharon) and Robert (Barbara); and a brother-in-law, Jim (Marion) Loomis.
He was preceded in death by his father, Roman; and sisters, Joanne Norris, Mary Brinkman and Virginia (Jim) Loomis.

SUTTONS BAY - Lorraine M. Stallman, 78, of Suttons Bay, died Wednesday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
Born July 13, 1921, she was the daughter of William and Lorraine (Belanger) Stallman. She worked most of her life as a nanny in New York. She liked to travel and enjoyed weaving.
She is survived by three sisters, Virginia (Don) Runde, Alice DeBord and Marie Spezia; and four brothers, George Stallman, William (Ruby) Stallman, Jerry (Vesta) Stallman and Eugene (Margaret) Stallman.
She was preceded in death by a brother, Leo.

Elmer T. Irwin
LAKE ANN - Elmer T. Irwin, 67, of Lake Ann, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 22, 1931, in Wayne County, he was the son of Thomas and Florence (Macey) Irwin. On Aug. 10, 1958, in Oakland County, he married Phyllis J. Holman.
Elmer was a retired employee of General Motors in Ypsilanti. He was a gentleman farmer raising a number of animals on his farm in Lake Ann. He was also a volunteer for Meals-On-Wheels for three years and he enjoyed delivering meals to homebound seniors.
He is survived by his wife, Phyllis J. Irwin of Lake Ann; three sons, John (Lisa) Irwin of South Boardman, Tim (Sherry) Irwin of Lake Ann and James Irwin of Lake Ann; three grandchildren, Jennifer, Tiffany and Heather; a special nephew, Fred Chapman of Westland; two sisters, Lorraine Demsey of Livonia and Dorothy St. Andrew of Westland; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two sisters, Evelyn Chapman and Shirley Irwin; and half-sister, Martha Trepkowski.

ELBERTA - David L. Johnson, 54, of Elberta, a lifelong resident of the area, died Thursday at his home.
Born May 6, 1945, in Frankfort, he was the son of Lewie and Edna (Jennings) Johnson. He was a graduate of Frankfort High School.
David was employed at Frankfort Manufacturing for 30 years, retiring in 1993. He was a member of Crystal Lodge No. 270, F & AM of Frankfort and the Grand Rapids Valley of Scottish Rites. His greatest joy was his family and especially spoiling his grandchildren.
He is survived by his daughters, Brenda Toppel of Sparta and Amy (David) Bissell of Frankfort; his son, Casey of Elberta; and grandchildren Kimberly and Kyle Toppel, Cory and Zach Bissell and Taylor Vickers. He also is survived by two brothers, Gerald (Fran) and Bill; his sister, Shirley Anderson; a sister-in-law, Mary Ann Johnson and a brother-in-law, Robert Gilbert.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Steven; and a sister, Dorothy Gilbert.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Frankfort Chapel McElduff Funeral Home. Ivan 'Ike' Lavant Wood
TRAVERSE CITY - Ivan 'Ike' Lavant Wood, 84, of Traverse City, died Friday at Acton's Country View Adult Foster Care Home in Traverse City.
Born Aug. 12, 1915, in Manistique, he was the son of James Edgar and Maime (McBurney) Wood. On Nov. 11, 1936, in Rapid River, he married Mary LaViolette, who preceded him in death in June, 1997.
Formerly of Marquette, Ike lived in Traverse City for the past two years. He was employed at Marquette Prison, where he retired after 35 years. He also was an adjunct professor in the criminal justice department at Northern Michigan University; the author of "100 Years of Hard Labor," a history of Marquette prison; a free-lance photographer; and a poet and songwriter.
He is survived by a son, James I. (Connie) Wood of Traverse City; two daughters, Mary (Dan) Trotochaud and Mariann Stull, both of Marquette; two sisters, Grace Tennant of Manistique and Bernice Galli of the Detroit area; ten grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, Leon and Donald Wood; and a sister, Romaine Aho.
A Memorial Mass is being planned at St. Peters Cathedral in Marquette. Burial will be in Holy Cross Cemetery in Marquette.

CADILLAC - Leontine A. "Tina" Clous, 47, died Friday at her home in Cadillac.
Born Nov. 7, 1951, in Cadillac, she was the daughter of Edward L. and Petrunia M. (Shakinas) LeVeque. On Feb. 19, 1977, she married Richard Clous.
Tina was vice-president and business partner with her husband, Richard, of Clous Construction, Inc. She was a past president and treasurer of the Cadillac Country Club, president of the Womens Stock Club, treasurer of Haring Township, past executive officer of the Cadillac Area Home Builders Association, an active member of St. Ann Catholic Church and matriarch of the Bon Bons.
Survivors include her husband, Richard; daughter, Brenda (Trent) Winn of Zeeland; two sons, Johnathon Clous of Ann Arbor and Jamie Clous of Marquette; father, Edward L. LeVeque of Harrietta; two sisters, Martha J. (Arthur) Lawrence of Waterford and Pearl P. (Gary) Sullivan of Manistee; and a brother, Larry L. (Jane) LeVeque of Harrietta.
Tina was preceded in death by her mother, Petrunia M. LeVeque, on Sept. 14, 1998.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Peterson Funeral Home in Cadillac; a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. Monday.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Tuesday at St. Ann Catholic Church in Cadillac; Father Francis J. Murphy will serve as celebrant. Burial will be in Mount Carmel Cemetery.

TRAVERSE CITY - Germie S. Isip, 53, of Traverse City, died Friday due to an apparent heart attack.
He was president and owner of Captain Video and Village Cable TV, Inc. Born in the Philippines, he obtained a bachelor of science degree in electronics and communications engineering in 1970. He, his wife and his son, Gerry, immigrated to Traverse City in 1980. Germie was known as a very hard working individual.
Survivors include his wife, Dolores, and two sons, Gerry and Gilbert - all of Traverse City. Germie is also survived by four sisters and two brothers.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.

William Alexander 'Bill' Beuche

SUTTONS BAY - William Alexander "Bill" Beuche, 81, of Suttons Bay, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born July 23, 1918, in Sturgis, he was the second son of Alec and Marie Beuche of Zilwaukee.
Bill's father, a Freemason, was a master machinist and pattern maker of rifles and the Buick engine. Both his mother and father were emigrants to the United States from Germany near the turn of the 20th century.
Bill married Marion Louise Mallack. She gave birth to their daughter, Antoinette, in Traverse City in 1941, where he was employed by Michigan Bell Telephone Co. Their son, William Jr., was born in Cadillac in 1943. James was born in 1947 in Saginaw where the family then made their home and so was their youngest son, Michael, who was born in 1957. After several more relocations with Michigan Bell, Bill and Marion retired to their summer home in Suttons Bay in 1975. In 1964 they had begun construction of the home with their son Michael.
Bill and Marion enjoyed a long and happy retirement in Suttons Bay and the many places they fled to from Michigan's long winters. They brought back many tales of interest from Florida, Alabama, Arizona, California, Australia, New Zealand, Italy, Spain, Portugal, France, Britain and Egypt.
Bill was an ardent seeker of knowledge of the history of northern Michigan and contributed his own remembrances of the area's history to local historians.
He was a deep thinker, an inveterate record keeper, and an accomplished builder and artisan. Bill was plain-spoken in all respects.
He and Marion were members of the Michigan Bell Pioneers, the individuals who first spread telecommunications throughout northern Michigan. They were indeed pioneers in the Grand Traverse Bay area.
Their children and grandchildren are extremely proud of their parents and grandparents and of their contribution to the places where they lived as well as to their own lives and wish to express their appreciation and love to all of their wonderful friends and neighbors and to the medical professionals at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City who strove to make Bill and Marion's last days as comfortable as possible.
Survivors include his four children, Antoinette Kemp of Tawas City, William A. Beuche Jr. of Palo Alto, Calif., James Richard Beuche of Ann Arbor, and Michael Robert Beuche of Whitefish Bay, Wis.; grandchildren, David Boyd Carrigan of New York, N.Y., Heather Marie Carrigan of Los Angeles, Calif., Jeff Beuche of Colorado Springs, Colo., William Miller Beuche of Kalamazoo, William Alexander Beuche III of Palo Alto, Calif., Blair Beuche of Ann Arbor, and Anthony Joseph Beuche, Sean Michael Beuche, and James Paul Beuche of Whitefish Bay, Wis.; and a younger brother, Jack Beuche, of Indian Head, Md., a master carpenter-cabinetmaker-contractor.
Bill was preceded in death by his wife - last winter, his older brother, Ben, and a sister, Lois.

Earl Vance Burk

MAPLE CITY - Earl Vance Burk, 81, of Little Traverse Lake, went to be with his Lord Saturday afternoon.
Born Aug. 21, 1918, in Saginaw, he was the son of the Rev. Emory W. and Ellen (Fuller) Burk. On Nov. 21, 1940, in Burt, he married Marjorie M. Green.
Earl was a retired agent for Farmers Insurance Group. He was a former member of the Flint First Church of the Nazarene and attended the Traverse City First Church of the Nazarene.
Survivors include his wife, Marjorie of Little Traverse Lake; a son, James E. (Natalie) Burk of Rochester Hills; three grandchildren, James E. (Beverly) Burk II of Dunstable, Mass., and Stephen A. Burk and Kara Lee Burk - both of Rochester Hills; a brother, Merl A. (Jean) Burk of Vicksburg; a brother-in-law, Stanley R. (Rosemary) Lund of Spring Hill, Fla.; and many nieces and nephews.
Earl was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Emory Burk; and three sisters, Mildred Pollman, Marjorie Daniels, and Jane Russell; and an infant sister.

BENZONIA - Pearl R. Demerly, 85, of Benzonia, died Sunday morning at The Maples Benzie County Medical Care Facility in Frankfort.
She was born Jan. 29, 1914, in Walkerville, the daughter of Peter and Eva (Perry) Richter. Pearl moved in 1925 from Walkerville to the Benzonia area. She was a school teacher at Benzie County Normal School for two years. She was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary and Senior Center Kitchen Kats Band. Pearl enjoyed fishing, hunting and camping.
On April 27, 1940, in Benzonia, she married Kenneth C. Demerly who preceded her in death on Dec. 12, 1970. She was also preceded in death by a son, Roland, in infancy, in 1940, and three sisters, Ruth Miller, Lottie Demerly and Annie Kalman.
Pearl is survived by her daughter, Retta (Ray) Blahnik of Frankfort; her son, Ben (Frankie) of Benzonia; eight grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; a brother, Dale of Petoskey; and a sister, Mae Bechtell of Indianapolis, Ind.
Friends may call from noon to 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Perry Chapel of McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia.
Services are scheduled for 2 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home; Robert Bodell, Evangelist, will officiate. Interment will be in Joyfield Township Cemetery.

Emma Doll

MANCELONA - Emma Doll, 91, of Mancelona died on Friday at Ingham County Medical Care Facility in Okemos.
She was born April 24, 1908, in Louisville, Ky., the daughter of John Jacob and Mary Elizabeth (Moran) Arnold. On Oct. 3, 1926, in Louisville, she married Alfred A. Doll.
Emma moved to Detroit in 1926 where she and Alfred made their home. After Alfred's retirement they moved to Mancelona in 1970. He preceded her in death on May 2, 1990. Emma enjoyed golfing.
She is survived by nine grandchildren, several great-grandchildren, numerous great-great-grandchildren, one brother, Stan Arnold of South Lyon, and several nieces and nephews.
Emma was preceded in dead by one son, Donald Doll, five brothers, and two sisters.
The family will receive friends from 6 to 9 p.m. today at Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona.
Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Father Dale Magoon will officiate.

Robert W. 'Bob' McCloud

BENZONIA - Robert W. "Bob" McCloud, 67, of Benzonia, died suddenly Saturday afternoon at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He was born Sept. 20, 1931, in Joliet, Ill., the son of Fred and Luella (Effner). Robert had lived in the Benzonia area for the past 33 years having come from Kalamazoo.
Robert served his county honorably as a member of the U.S. Marines; during his service he became disabled. He was a member and past commander of the Mortenson Post No. 221 American Legion in Frankfort; he served as commander for four years. Robert was also Chef DeGarde of the 40/8 in 1978.
On March 21, 1964, in Kalamazoo, he married Donna Barrons; she survives. Robert is also survived by his children, Robert Jr. (Sharon) of Spicer, Minn., Stephen of Paynesville, Minn., and Richard of Kalamazoo; stepson, Steven Fowler in Guam; daughters, Roberta Walser of Traverse City and Deborann (Thomas) Ryan of Homer; 17 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Jay (Diana) of Bangor; and a sister, Doris (Bob) Martin of Churubusco, Ind.
Friends may meet with the family from 7 to 9 p.m. today and from 4 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes in Benzonia.

Robert M. Sanford
Died September 10, 1999
HASLETT - Robert M. Sanford, 76, of Haslett, died Friday evening at the Hospice House of Mid Michigan after battling cancer for many months.
Born Nov. 18, 1922, in Gaylord, he was the son of Volney and Dora (Hayes) Sanford.
Robert served with distinction in the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II. On Nov. 16, 1944, T/Sgt. Sanford's B-17 received a direct hit from flak just five seconds after "bombs away" over targeted railway yards in Innsbruck, Austria. With three engines inoperable, Flight Engineer Sanford rendered invaluable and life-saving assistance in keeping his bomber aloft for 300 miles, thus enabling the crew to bail out over northern Italy. Behind enemy lines and reported missing in action for six months, Robert was able to elude enemy detection and fight his way to freedom in May of 1945.
Robert returned to Michigan and married Nettie F. William who also succumbed to lung cancer in 1996.
He retired from General Motors Tech Center in Warren in 1980. Subsequently, he and Nettie moved to La Vegas, Nev., where together they enjoyed 16 years of retirement.
Survivors include his daughter, Valerie J. (Terry) Applegate of Haslett; son, Robert J. (Ruth) Sanford of East Lansing; two sisters, Shirley (Roy) Smith of Ypsilanti and Leila Pocialik of Illinois; six grandchildren, Jerald Reis, Janelle (Brian) Compton, Alison Sanford, Michael Sanford, Megan Sanford, and Aaron Applegate; and many special nieces and nephews.

GRAND RAPIDS, Ohio - Leo H. Lemcool, 78, of Grand Rapids, a native of Flint, Mich., died Friday at Heartland of Browning in Waterville.
He was born May 3, 1921, in Flint to Herman H. and Mary (LaFrance) Lemcool. He married Phoebe J. Roseberry on Feb. 6, 1941; she survives.
He served in the U.S. Marine Corps during Word War II at Tarawa, Gilbert Island, Okinawa and Ryuku. He was a sales representative for Dura Kraft Kitchen, retiring in 1990.
Leo was a member of Zoar Lutheran Church in Perrysburg, the Jackson Elks, DAV, and the Grand Rapids American Legion Post.
Also surviving are sons, Michael D. (Carol) of Alma, Mich., and Bruce W. of Woodstock, Ill.; grandchildren, Carrie (Kevin) Akin, Michael D. Lemcool II, and Jason A., Matthew W., and Adam A. Lemcool; and great-grandchildren, Keegan and Karrigan Akin.
A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Friday at Zoar Lutheran Church in Perrysburg; the Rev. James Wenger will officiate. Interment will be at approximately 4 p.m. at Woodland Cemetery in Jackson, Mich.

Margaret Ann Moores

INTERLOCHEN - Margaret Ann Moores, 72, of Interlochen died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born March 11, 1927, in Superior, Wis., she was the daughter of George and Barbara (Sindelar) McDonough.
She was a former English and history teacher in the Lansing area. She had been a resident of the Traverse City area since 1975 when she moved here from Grand Ledge.
Margaret was involved in many volunteer activities, especially with donating her time as a library assistant at the Interlochen library. She loved sewing, cooking, reading and interior design, but the most important thing in her life was her family.
She married Gordon B. Moores on Aug. 8, 1950, in Superior, Wis.; he survives.
Also surviving are three daughters, Kay (David) Walker of Traverse City, Mary Pat (David) Clark of Knoxville, Tenn., and Margee Moores of Atlanta, Ga.; and the apple-of-her-eye, grandson Brian Clark.
Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; a brother, George McDonough; and a grandson, Daniel Clark.
At her request, cremation has taken place and family services will be held at a later time.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to the Margaret Ann Moores Scholarship Fund at Traverse City West Senior High School or to the American Cancer Society.

Crystal Marie Nichols

DURAND - Crystal Marie Nichols, of Durand, formerly of Flint, was reunited with her Lord on Sunday.
Crystal Marie Reed was born to Isaac and Flora Reed on Sept. 22, 1912, in Benzonia. She graduated from high school in 1928 in Honor. On Feb. 4, 1933, she was united in marriage to Arthal C. Nichols in Wabash, Ind. He went to be with the Lord on Oct. 26, 1994.
Crystal was a homemaker and faithful church member. She was an active member of Flint First Wesleyan Church. She had been a member of the Wesleyan Church for over 55 years. She and her husband were instrumental in starting the Wesleyan Methodist Church in Flint in the 1940s. During her many years of service, she spent nearly 30 years as the reading course secretary for the east Michigan district. She taught Sunday school and headed many vacation Bible school sessions. She was loved by all who worked with her.
Crystal resided with her daughter, Elaine, and son-in-law, James Lienau, for the last few months. She was grandma to Tina M. Brooks of Florida, Richard Kemp of Durand, Kathy Lienau of Virginia, and Dave and Debbie Lienau, Terri and Bob Melecki, and Scott and Shannon Lienau - all of Birch Run. Great-grandma was the name she answered to for Kellie Marie and Laurie-Anne Brooks of Florida, Eric Kemp of Durand, Michelle Means, Zachery and Nicole Lienau, Rebecca and Amber Hammrel, Adam and Steven Melecki, and Rachael, Joshua, Justin, and Jordan Lienau. The special honor of great-great-grandmother was given to her by Brianna Means. She will be greatly missed by each of them. She will also be missed by her nieces, nephews, great-nieces, great-nephews, special sisters-in-law, Grace Moody, Erma Nichols, and Rhoda Nichols, and her brother-in-law, Ernest Nichols. She will be missed by her special friends, Harold Middleton and Vange and Butch Brink.
Crystal will lie in state at the Allen Funeral Home, 9136 Davison Road, in Davison. The family will receive visitors from 6 to 9 p.m. today and from 1 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 9 p.m. Wednesday.

TRAVERSE CITY - Helen L. Schmidt, 90, of Traverse City, died Sunday morning at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
Born Dec. 7, 1908, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Wm. and Anna (Kopp) Schneider. In 1932 she married Gerald W. Schmidt.
Helen moved from Detroit to Traverse City in 1947. A retired secretary and bookkeeper, she had worked for several area businesses including Thirlby Insurance, Kroupas, Inc. and the local Girl Scout council. She was a member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Traverse City for 52 years, served as a volunteer for R.S.V.P. and was involved in the Senior Companion program. Helen enjoyed reading and playing cards.
Survivors include her son, Kenneth (Kay) Schmidt of Lansing, a daughter, Janet (Terry) Sanborn of Northport and Bradenton, Fla.; seven grandchildren, Tracey (Earl) Heath of Three Rivers, Michael (Geri) Schmidt of White Pigeon, Christopher Schmidt of Lansing, Kraig Overholt of Las Vegas, Kendra (Dave) Pauline of Trenton, Brett (Tammy) Sanborn of Rochester Hills, and Shana Sanborn of Charlotte, N.C.; and six great-grandchildren.
Helen was preceded in death by her husband and a daughter, Karen Hubbard, both in 1981.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Bethlehem Lutheran Church; the Rev. Dr. David Gabel will officiate. A gathering of friends and family will be held at the church immediately following the service.

KARLIN - Edward L. Totten, 68, died Saturday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Feb. 16, 1931, in Chicago, he was the son of Edward and Gladys (Owen) Totten. On Dec. 2, 1950, in Chicago, he married Violet Albrecht.
Edward moved to Karlin in 1994 from Trevor, Wis., where he lived for 38 years and owned and operated Totten Real Estate. He was a member of the Kenosha Board of Realtors, a charter member of the Salem Township Rescue Squad and a member of Bricklayers Local No. 20. Edward was a Boy Scout and Cub Scout leader and also served as a foster parent. He enjoyed fishing and football.
Survivors include his daughter, Cheryl Ann (Robert) Ponsonby of Antioch, Ill.; his son, Patrick (Karen) Totten of Karlin; nine grandchildren, Ed Pierce of Cincinnati, Tom (Christine) Totten of Round Lake, Ill., Steven Semmler of Kenosha, Wis., Stephanie and Jessica Brown of Karlin, and Nick, Phillip, and Christopher Ponsonby of Antioch, Ill.; and his beloved dog, Shawna.
Edward was preceded in death by his wife in 1998, parents, a sister and a brother.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. today at Interlochen Bible Church; the Rev. Bruce Craner will officiate.

Jerry D. Harmon

SUTTONS BAY - Jerry D. Harmon, 61, died Tuesday at his home in Suttons Bay.
Born Jan. 15, 1938, in Easley Township, he was the son of Paul and Mary (Deckard) Harmon. On Aug. 2, 1958, he married Vida Revold.
Jerry was a 41-year resident of the Grand Traverse and Leelanau counties area. He worked for Cherry Bend Tool & Die as a tool-and-die maker for 23 years. Jerry was a member of the Eagles Aerie No. 383. He enjoyed bowling, woodworking and watching football. He was an avid fisherman and enjoyed deer and rabbit hunting with his two beagles, Mindy and Molly.
Survivors include his wife, Vida, of Suttons Bay; a daughter, Tonia (Steve) Brow of Norway, Mich.; his mother, Mary of Hillman; two brothers, Jack (Debbie) Harmon of Knoxville, Tenn., and Denny (Judy) Harmon of Valdosta, Ga.; and two grandchildren, Casey and Scott Brow of Norway, Mich.
Jerry was preceded in death by his father and a sister, Pauline Weaver of Atlanta, Mich.

TRAVERSE CITY - Marie I. Iverson, 95, died Monday at Culver Meadows AFC in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 23, 1903, in East Jordan, she was the daughter of Alfred and Addie (Closson) Tindale. On Sept. 28, 1930, in Cadillac, she married Edwin Iverson.
Marie attended Western Michigan University and received a teaching degree. She was a resident of Traverse City since 1930 when she came from Manton. A member of First Congregational Church and a life member of Munson Auxiliary, Marie was a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include two daughters, Nancy (James) Ooley of Traverse City and Jean (William) Matson of Saginaw; seven grandchildren; and 13 great-grandchildren.
Marie was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, in 1976; a sister, Zada Johnson; and a grandson, Bill Ooley.

TRAVERSE CITY - Jane Marie Lange, 76, died Friday at her Traverse City home after a long illness.
Born Jan. 1, 1923, in Dayton, Ohio, she was the daughter of Raymond A. and Daisy L (Martin) Ritzler. On March 20, 1948, in Dayton, she married Rudolph G. Lange.
Jane was a resident of the area for the last 19 years. She was a member of First Congregational Church. In prior years, Jane enjoyed sewing and tailoring clothes for herself and her nieces. She also enjoyed playing music on her home and church organ.
Survivors include her husband, Rudolph, of Traverse City; two brothers, Richard Ritzler of Dayton, Ohio, and Ronald (Anita) Ritzler of Palos Heights, Ill.; two nieces, Suzanne Ritzler (Richard Zagone) of Oak Park, Ill., and Sarah Jane (Scott) Seigel of Bloomington, Ind.; a nephew, Ronald (Tina) Ritzler Jr. of Chicago; a grand-nephew, Jacob Zagone of Oak Park, Ill.; and two cousins, Stella Maye (Emil) Miller of Dayton, Ohio, and Carol Palmer of Joelton, Tenn.
Jane was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Raymond.
Friends may call at the time of memorial services which will be held at 11 a.m. Monday, Sept. 20, at First Congregational Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Gary Hogue will officiate.
Burial will be in the church's Garden of Remembrance.

Edwin C. Oberg

TRAVERSE CITY - Edwin C. Oberg, 78, died Monday at Birchwood Nursing Center. He was known to his friends and co-workers as "Eddie O."
Born Oct. 10, 1920, in Chicago, he was the son of Carl and Wilda (Erickson) Oberg. On Oct. 17, 1942, in Chicago, he married Georgiana M. Hill.
A veteran of World War II, he served in the U.S. Army. Edwin, who had been in sales for Wieboldt's Furniture in Chicago for 17 years, retired in 1976 and moved to Traverse City. He was then employed by Hertz Car Rental at Cherry Capital Airport for 20 years. He retired in June 1999. Edwin was very devoted to his family.
Survivors include his wife, Georgiana; daughters, Pennie (Fred) Egeler of Traverse City and Jeanine (Everett) Coleman of Hanover Park, Ill.; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
Edwin was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, Ernest Oberg.
Graveside services will be held at noon Saturday, Oct. 9, at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

TRAVERSE CITY - Lorraine M. Yanski, 92, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Nov. 5, 1906, in Hannah, she was the daughter of Adam and Mary (Steinebach) Wurm. On Nov. 25, 1924, in Hannah, she married Theodore C. "Ted" Yanski.
A housewife, Lorraine was a member of Holy Family Society and St. Francis Catholic Church. She loved working in the yard, gardening, baking, cooking and crocheting.
She was the beloved mother of three daughters and two sons, all of whom whom survive, Dee (Edward) Kruse, Geneva Yanski, Betty (Leonard) Popa, Ted (Ann) Yanski, and Pat (Nancy) Yanski - all of Traverse City. Survivors also include two brothers, Ambrose Wurm of Kingsley and Ben Wurm of Lake Ann; 12 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Lorraine was preceded in death by her husband on June 15, 1969, two sisters and seven brothers.
Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City; a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City; the Rev. Walter Anthony will serve as celebrant.

GLEN ARBOR - Ursula Betancourt Barton, 78, of Glen Arbor, died Tuesday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center in Northport.
Born Sept. 3, 1921, in Camaquey, Cuba, she was the daughter of Pablo and Ursula (Gomez) Betancourt. On Sept. 17, 1948, in Chicago, she married Wilfrid Barton.
Ursula was a previous resident of Dallas; New Orleans; Gallipolis, Ohio; Terra Haute, Ind.; Malaga, Spain; and Asheville, N.C. before moving to northern Michigan. A retired data processor, she was a former employee of Old Kent Bank. She like to collect dolls and antiques. Ursula was very family oriented and will be remembered as a natural dancer.
Survivors include her husband; two daughters, Jennifer B. (Edgard) Wilson and Susan D. Barton (Lee R. Baxter); a son, James E. Barton; a stepson, Michael R. Barton (Nani Salazar); four grandchildren, Lisa, Christina, Sara, and Ian; seven stepgrandchildren, Mena, Steven, Marie, Luciana, Victoria, Lucia, and Miguel Angel; and a great-granddaughter, McKinley.
Ursula was preceded in death by her brother, Salvador Betancourt.

KAUAI, Hawaii - Grant Allen Christianson, 36, died Saturday, Sept. 4, after a long fight with Lou Gehrig's disease.
Grant received a bachelor's degree in marketing from Michigan State University and enjoyed his affiliation with Delata Sigma Phi fraternity. A world traveler, Greg explored much of the world and lived at different times in Switzerland, Greece, England and France. This paved the way for his success as the international sales manager at LexaLite International Corporation in Charlevoix, Mich. He retired from his position in August 1997 to move to the island of Kauai where he and his wife resided for the last two years.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Sheila; his beloved father and stepmother, Maurice and Marjorie; brothers, Chris and Bruce; sister, Sarah (Michael) Ranshaw; and two nieces, Madeleine and Lydia.
Grant was preceded in death by his mother, Caroline, in 1991.
A memorial service is scheduled Sunday, Oct. 17, in Charlevoix.
The Rev. Kenneth R. Hanna

CHESTERTON, Ind. - The Rev. Kenneth R. Hanna, 55, of Chesterton, died Tuesday morning at his home.
Born Sept. 18, 1943, in Traverse City, Mich., he was the son of William and Alice Hanna.
Kenneth and his wife Beth E. (Phillips), served as missionaries in Mexico and Central America for many years. He was currently serving as a professor at Moody Bible Institute in Chicago. Kenneth attended Liberty Bible Church in Chesterton.
Survivors include his wife, Beth of Chesterton; children, Kenneth R. Hanna II of Chesterton, Kris Hanna of Chesterton, Kim (Jeff) Allem of Painsville, Ohio, Beth (Alan) McManus of Aurora, Ill.; mother, Alice of Traverse City; six grandchildren; four brothers, Ed, Tom, and John Hanna - all of Traverse City, and Dave Hanna of Goldendale, Wash.; a sister, Pat Hermel of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his father.

Milo W. Kaufman

BELLAIRE - Milo W. Kaufman, 92, of Ann Arbor, formerly of Bellaire, died Monday at Arbor Hospice Residence in Ann Arbor.
He was born Oct. 29, 1906, in Custer Township, the son of Samuel D. and Ida F. (Winkler) Kaufman.
Milo graduated from Bellaire High School in 1924 and was employed by his father in the milling business until 1929 when he went to Ann Arbor. There he was employed as a clerk and then a store manager by the Atlantic & Pacific Tea Co. On Aug. 23, 1932, he married Lula Dingman who preceded him in death in 1992. From 1942 to 1945, during World War II, he worked in a defense plant. In 1945 he went on to the University of Michigan Department of Engineering and Applied Mechanics where he held the position of engineering technician until his retirement in 1970. He then returned to Central Lake where he resided until 1990. He relocated to Bellaire's Meadow View Apartments for four years; in 1994 he returned to Ann Arbor's Hillside Terrace.
Milo is survived by his daughters, Carol M. (Richard) Girvin of Plano, Texas, and Marilyn L. Twining of Ann Arbor; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Graveside services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Southern Cemetery in Central Lake Township; the Rev. Dick Sommer will officiate.

James Lee Foster

COPEMISH - James Lee Foster, 62, of Copemish, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Sept. 11, 1937, in Detroit, he was the son of LeRoy and Harriet (Sherman) Foster.

William C. Frymire
Died September 16, 1999
MANCELONA - William C. Frymire, 79, of Mancelona, died Thursday at his home.
Born Sept. 2, 1920, in Alba, he was the son of Frank Cleveland and Irma A. (Fuller) Frymire.
William graduated from Alba High School in 1938 and Central Michigan University in June 1942. He served in the United States Army during World War II and was part of the invasion force on Omaha Beach on the coast of France and was at Nuremberg, Germany when the war ended. On April 19, 1946, in Mancelona, he married Dolores Evelyn Meadows. He later received his master's degree from Michigan State University.
William taught school in Alba, Mancelona, Bay City and Traverse City Junior High School. He later worked as an agent for Ben Schank Real Estate in East Jordan. He was a member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars, American Legion, Disabled American Veterans and Mancelona United Methodist Church. He had served as the Antrim County veteran's counselor in Bellaire for ten years. He enjoyed walking, hiking in the woods, flowers, puttering around the house and golfing. He was proud of his ten holes-in-one during golfing.
He is survived by his wife, Dolores Evelyn Frymire of Mancelona; two children, Kenneth Lynn (Susan) Frymire of Traverse City and Gena Leigh (Ken) Frymire-Bjornson of Battle Creek; three grandchildren, Elizabeth Frymire and Kaila and Gunnar Bjornson; his stepmother, Marion Frymire Weaver of Lakeland, Fla. and one brother, Richard Frymire of the Virgin Islands.
He was preceded in death by one daughter, Judith Leigh Frymire in 1947; his parents; two sisters, Fern and Frances; and two brothers, Frank, Jr. and Tom.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Mancelona United Methodist Church with Rev. Carol Floyd officiating. Interment will be in Fairview Cemetery in Mancelona.
Memorials may be given to the Mancelona United Methodist Church, Otsego Area Hospice or the Mancelona Senior Center.

Dr. Donald Floyd Moore
Died September 10, 1999
INDIANAPOLIS - Dr. Donald Floyd Moore was born July 6, 1914, in Winona, Minn. and died Friday, Sept. 10, 1999, at Wildwood Nursing Home in Indianapolis. He was 85 years old at the time of death.
Dr. Moore was a remarkable man filled with an insatiable curiosity about almost everything. In high school in Kalamazoo, Mich., his curiosity had focused on natural sciences and biology finding man the most curious and interesting animal to be studied. Don's early boy scout experience also cemented a desire to be of some service to mankind. This interest in science, his curiosity and desire to be of service contributed to his decision to go into medical school and ultimately specialize in psychiatry.
Donald attended Western Michigan in Kalamazoo and the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. He graduated from the University of Michigan with a medical degree in 1938. Donald served on staff at Ypsilanti State Hospital from 1938 to 1940. He entered the army in 1940 and was assigned to Fort Sam Houston, Texas. He saw service in China, Burma and India and was discharged in 1946 as a Lt. Colonel to resume private life back at Ypsilanti State Hospital on staff. In 1948 Dr. Moore took a position as chief of neuro-psychiatric service at the Veteran's Administration Hospital in Louisville, Ky. In addition he was an associate professor at the University of Louisville School of Medicine.
He moved to Indianapolis in October 1955, and took the medical director position at Larue D. Carter Hospital. He continued teaching as a full professor at Indiana University Medical Center along with his administrative duties. Larue Carter was nationally noted as a psychiatric research hospital during Dr. Moore's administration. He authored several publications and books and was an outstanding community leader in his professional activities.
He was a former lecturer, Christian Theological Seminary, Indianapolis; former lecturer, Southern Baptist Theological Seminary, Louisville, Ky.; past president, Indiana Psychiatric Association; past president, Central Neuro-Psychiatric Association; past president, Association of Medical Superintendents of Mental Hospitals; fellow, American Psychiatric Association and member, Committees on Psychiatry and Psychology and council on Professions and Associations and associate examiner, American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. He was an active panelist for several years on the local television program "Insight."
Donald retired from Carter Hospital in the fall of 1980. This gave him and wife, Carola (Gibson) more time to spend summers at his cabins in northern Michigan and winters with good friends in the Cayman Islands. "Dad loved his time at the lake. He could work in the woods, lay reading in a hammock or enjoy the beach and water as much as possible," said daughter Kathleen. His wife, Carola, preceded him in death on January 11, 1999.
He will be missed by his children, Mary Ann Turner of Costa Mesa, Calif., Donald Floyd Moore, Jr. of Springfield, Ohio, Kathleen Fedders of Loveland, Ohio and Carol Jo Hoehne of Fox Lake, Ill.; 14 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. today at Crown Hill Funeral Home in Indianapolis.

Born March 14, 1905, in Chicago, he was the son of Robert L. and Elsie (Nicolson) Webb. On Nov. 23, 1929, in Kelso, Wash., he married Mildred Thomas of Portland, Ore.
In 1929 the owner of Kirsch Company of Sturgis, Mich., gave him a Model A Ford and the western states as his sales territory. He traveled the West for a number of years before returning to Michigan during the depression and worked for Standard Oil. He and his family lived in Benton Harbor, Kalamazoo, Muskegon and Grand Rapids. In 1941 Jack moved to Cleveland, Ohio, and started his own business which thrived until he retired in 1969 to Traverse City. After retirement, Jack embarked on a new career in public service. He helped write the first Long Lake Township master plan and was chief architect and prime force of the first township ordinance. Jack was elected and served four years as chair of planning commission and was appointed to serve as interim to the Grand Traverse County Commission in 1981. In 1989 he was the recipient of the Grand Traverse County Planning Commission "Frank Purvis Stewardship Award" for 20 years of dedicated public service to his community. He was a member of the Meridian Sun Lodge No. 49 F&AM since 1924, life member of Sturgis Masonic Lodge, Cleveland Ohio Shriners, Rotary Club of Traverse City and the Elks Lodge of Traverse City.
He is survived by his wife, Mildred; daughter, Virginia Urick of Traverse City; son, Dr. Thomas Webb of Berkley, Calif.; six grandchildren; six great-granddaughters; and many special nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents; and brothers, Bill and Charles.
A gathering of family and friends will be from 10 to 11 a.m. Thursday at Long Lake Friends Church. A memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Pastor Keith Huffman officiating. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery in Hartford at a later date.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Long Lake Friends Church or the Dennos Museum at Northwestern Michigan College.

WILLIAMSBURG - David S. Washkevich, 33, of Williamsburg, died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 22, 1965, in Chicago, he was the son of Richard W. and Patricia (Machniak) Washkevich. On Aug. 22, 1992, at Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme, he married Barbara Manley.
David grew up in Chicago and spent his adult life in the Traverse City and Williamsburg areas. A CAD designer, he had been employed by Building Components Unlimited. David loved to fish, ride snowmobiles and hunt.
Survivors include his wife, Barbara of Williamsburg; two children at home, Devon and Cira; his parents, Richard and Patricia of Traverse City; two brothers and a sister, Richard (Charlene) Washkevich of Croswell, Debbie Washkevich of Wellston, and Don (Tracy) Washkevich of Traverse City; grandmothers, Anna Washkevich and Mary Machniak - both of Chicago; and many other relatives.
David was preceded in death by his grandfathers.

William Joseph 'Bronk' 'Bill' Bronkhorst

CENTRAL LAKE - William Joseph "Bronk" "Bill" Bronkhorst passed peacefully Monday morning at Meadowbrook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire where he had been a patient for four months. His death brought him relief from his suffering and peace to those who loved him and had watched the progression of indignities he endured due to Alzheimer's disease.
Bill was born in Detroit in 1914 to Leo and Marie Bronkhorst who preceded him in death. He married Louise Beaudin of Marquette in 1936 and would have celebrated their 63rd wedding anniversary the day following his death.
Survivors include his wife, Louise of Central Lake; son, Gerald of Central Lake; daughters Louanne and Sharon - both of Central Lake; son, Bill of Green Bay, Wis.; and a brother, Leo of Grand Rapids. He had six grandchildren, Jerry, Joey, Bill Jr., Sherry, Angel, and Chad, and five great-grandchildren.
Bill would want to be remembered as a hardworking honest man who loved the Upper Peninsula, the outdoors and people. Those who knew him will all remember his integrity, intelligence and love for friends as well as his gift of humor, his teachings of tolerance and correct speech and spelling.
With respect to his lifelong wishes, Bill's remains have been donated to the University of Michigan for medical study prior to any funeral service or memorial.
In lieu of flowers, contributions in his name can be made to the Alzheimer's association nearest those wishing to contribute.
His memorial will be everlasting if those who knew him remember him and smile the next time they see a pine tree, taste a glass of dry red wine, or walk the woods during their next hunting trip.

Dove Leone Randall

TRAVERSE CITY - Dove Leone Randall, 92, of Traverse City, died Saturday.
She was born Dec. 29, 1906.
Dove married Arthur "Art" Randall on Feb. 19, 1927. They were married 53 years; he preceded her in death in August 1980.
In 1956 Art and Dove started a grocery store on 3 Mile Road in Traverse City. They called it Randall's Grocery. They ran the store together for many years before retiring to a home on Silver Lake.
Survivors include two children, Richard A. (Joanne) Randall and Elaine (Art) Broadhurst, and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren who dearly loved her.
At her request there will be a private memorial.
"Grandma, may you rest in peace," said her family.

THREE OAKS - Grace E. Sebak, 84, formerly of Three Oaks, died Sunday at Jordan's Nursing Home in Bridgman.
Grace was born May 23, 1915, in Millbrook. She lived in Three Oaks for 40 years where she and her former husband owned and operated the Three Oaks Locker Plant. She was a member of St. John United Church of Christ and the St. John's Women's Guild. Grace was also a life member of the Eastern Star Lodge No. 98 and a past Noble Grand of Rebekah Lodge No. 309.
Survivors include her children, Micki (Jerry) Miller, Ken (Marge) Taylor of Traverse City, Bobbie (Tim) Ruhl, and Cindy (Rich) Graziano; 10 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; half sister, Dorothy Koch; and half brother Charles Wilson.
Grace was preceded in death by her parents, a sister and a brother.

TRAVERSE CITY - Robert W. Smith Sr., 69, of Traverse City, died Saturday. He was a former resident of Buckley.
Born May 21, 1930, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of William C. and Crystal I. (Allen) Smith. On Sept. 1, 1949, he married Gloria A. Hayes.
Robert was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Japan. A mason, he had worked in the construction industry all his life and was a member of the local bricklayers union. Robert enjoyed mushrooming, fishing, hunting and gardening. He was an avid outdoorsman.
Survivors include his wife of fifty years, Gloria of Traverse City; two sons, Robert W. (Susan) Smith Jr. and Dennis C. (Kathleen) Smith - both of Rapid City; two daughters, Victoria M. (Joseph) Mikula of Buckley and Crystina M. (Chet) Gombosi of Venice, Fla.; seven brothers; two sisters; eight grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.
Robert was preceded in death by his parents and a brother.
Cremation has taken place.
A gathering with family and friends will take place from 1 to 2 p.m. Thursday at Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service in Traverse City. Funeral services will follow immediately; the Rev. David Stanfest will officiate.

TRAVERSE CITY - Jacob Aftanas, 91, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
Born Aug. 20, 1908, in Arnold, Pa., he was the son of Stephen and Nellie (Derkatz) Aftanas. On Sept. 20, 1930, in McKees Rocks, Pa., he married Anna Mudryk.
A truck driver for Alcoa Aluminum Co., he had lived in Traverse City since 1996 and was a previous resident of Sterling Heights. Before then, Jacob was a resident of Arnold, Pa., where he was a member of St. Vladimire Ukrainian Catholic Church and served as a volunteer firefighter for the Volunteer Fire Company No. 1, of which he was a life member.
Survivors include a son, Jacob (Barbara) R. Aftanas of Interlochen; two sisters, Mary Strejcek of Florida and Anna Zamparinie of Lower Burrell, Pa.; a brother, Joseph (Louise) Aftanas of South Carolina; two granddaughters, Lynn Marie (Mitchell) Sioma of Sterling Heights and Lori Ann Aftanas of Detroit; two grandsons, Paul Joseph (April) Aftanas of Walled Lake and Aaron James Aftanas of Clinton Township; three great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
Jacob was preceded in death by his wife, Anna, on Nov. 4, 1995; two brothers, Stanley and Stephen Aftanas; and a sister, Rosie Kowalski.

SAULT STE. MARIE - Ida M. Arfstrom, 93, of Sault Ste. Marie, formerly of Traverse City, died Mondayin Sault Ste. Marie.
Born Dec. 31, 1905, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Jacob and Flora (Weller) Witkop. On Sept. 12, 1929, she was united in marriage with Raymond N. Arfstrom; he preceded her in death April 23, 1962.
Ida was a resident of Leelanau County and Traverse City for most of her life. She attended schools in the Traverse City area and was employed at Milliken's Department Store in Traverse City for 25 years. Ida was a member of Central United Methodist Church in Traverse City. She moved to Sault Ste. Marie in 1996.
Survivors include a son, Robert (Bonnie) Arfstrom of Sault Ste. Marie; two daughters, Donna (John) Williams of Traverse City and Virginia (Leonard) Tafelsky of Germfask; five grandchildren, Stephen Detwiler of Rapid City, Michelle (Douglas) Sheckler of Cedarville, Deborah (Robert) Heathcote of St. Joseph, James Arfstrom of Sault Ste. Marie, and Mary Arfstrom of Sault Ste. Marie; a sister, Gertrude Engle of Ulysses, Pa.; seven great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and cousins.

TRAVERSE CITY - Ella Mae Hoogerhyde, 82, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center.
Born Aug. 31, 1917, in Granite City, Ill., she was the daughter of Joseph and Eliza (Lindsay) Chaboude. On Aug. 6, 1938, in Dearborn, she married Donald Hoogerhyde.
A homemaker, she had been a resident of Traverse City since 1989. Ella lived in Hershey for 16 years and in Dearborn from 1938 to 1973.
She enjoyed crocheting, stamp collecting and writing to her pen pals. Ella loved her family and grandchildren.
Survivors include her husband, Donald of Traverse City; two sons, Wesley (Kim) and Gerald (Pam) - both of Traverse City; three grandsons, Billy, Kenny, and Donny; two great-grandchildren, Joshua and Christine; and many nieces and nephews.
Ella was preceded in death by her parents, a son - Russell, a brother and three sisters.
Visitation will take place from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Funeral services will follow immediately at 1 p.m.; the Rev. Shane Myers will officiate.

Gordon B. Moores
Died September 21, 1999
INTERLOCHEN - Gordon B. Moores, 75, of Interlochen, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born July 22, 1923, in Superior, Wis., he was the son of A. Frank and Mary (Baird) Moores. On Aug. 8, 1950, in Superior, he married Margaret McDonough.
Gordon was a veteran of World War II and served with the U.S. Army in the Pacific Theater. He was co-owner of a wholesale distributorship in the Lansing area that dealt with lawn, garden and recreational products. After moving to the Traverse City area in 1975 from Grand Ledge, he developed some residential property and then, with his wife, Margaret, owned and operated Popcorn Galore in Traverse City. In later years he really treasured working with STRATA Design; he enjoyed his job and co-workers there. He loved words, reading, building, baking and landscaping. Gordon also enjoyed aviation, but most importantly, he loved and enjoyed his family.
Gordon is survived by his daughters Kay (Dave) Walker of Traverse City, Mary Pat (David) Clark of Knoxville, Tenn., and Margee Moores of Atlanta, Ga.; and a grandson, Brian Clark.
He was preceded in death by his wife, Margaret, on Sept. 12; a grandson, Daniel Clark; and his parents.
Private family services will be held.

He was born Oct. 16, 1966, in Traverse City.
Troy was a lifelong resident of the Kalkaska and Fife Lake areas. He enjoyed music.

EAST BAY TOWNSHIP - Luella M. Platz, 75, died Tuesday at the home of her daughter in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 28, 1923, in Cadillac, she was the daughter of Roy and Fannie (Hayter) Brainerd. On Dec. 6, 1941, in Cadillac, she married Earl D. Platz.
Luella became a resident of the Traverse City area in 1966 when she moved from Cadillac, where she had attended Weslyen Methodist Church. In 1984 she retired from Traverse City Regional Psychiatric Hospital. Luella will be remembered as a loving mother and grandmother.
Survivors include seven children, Arvin (Nyla) Platz of Bear Lake, Rosemary (Ted) Humlinski of Beulah, Lyle "Devere" (Beth) Platz of Saint Johns, Joan Platz of Traverse City, Marlene (Ken) Keeler of Benzonia, Philip Platz of Traverse City, and Fannie (Dick) Wyckoff of Traverse City; 15 grandchildren; 20 great-great-grandchildren; five brothers and sisters, Grace Shimel of Cadillac, Julia Snow of Florida, Ralph "Bud" (Helen) Brainerd of Cadillac, Laura Campbell of Tennessee, and Raymond Brainerd of Jennings; and many nieces and nephews.

KALKASKA - Anita E. Thomas, 94, of Kalkaska, died Tuesday at Kalkaska Memorial Health Center in Kalkaska.
Born in Leesburg, she was the daughter of Samuel and Arrilla (Kern) Russell. On April 23, 1923, in Battle Creek, she married Leo Thomas who preceded her in death on Dec. 8, 1960.
Anita had been a resident of Kalkaska since 1941 when she moved from Eaton Rapids. She was a member of Kalkaska Church of Christ. Anita enjoyed her family.
Survivors include five sons, Basil and Duane (Virginia) Thomas of Kalkaska, Darwin (Margaret) Thomas of Taylor, S.C., Marvin Thomas of Jackson, and Bobby (Dale) Thomas of Tampa, Fla.; four daughters, Coleen (Bob) Kedrovicz of Traverse City, Catherine (Neil) Westra of Lookout Mountain, Ga., Marlene (Larry) Wells of Kalkaska, and Norene Jackson of Grand Rapids; 29 grandchildren; 57 great-grandchildren; several great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews, and friends.
Besides her parents and husband, Anita was preceded in death by her children, Beatrice, Everett and Erwin Dale; three sisters, Irene, Viola, and Ethel; and three brothers, Harry, Lawrence, and Oscar.

Celeste Marie Bachant
Died September 22, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Celeste Marie Bachant, 79, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at the Grand Traverse Pavilions where she had been a resident for the past nine years.
Born April 9, 1920, in Iron Mountain, she was the daughter of Caesar and Cecilia (Fiorucci) Rossi.
In 1938 Celeste graduated from Kingsford High School and moved to Traverse City. In 1941 she married Robert Bachant, a Traverse City native. They made their home in Cadillac for a few years and started raising their two children. In 1953 they moved back to Traverse City where they lived the rest of their lives. Celeste worked for WTCM, Dr. William Jerome and Drs. Doug Frantz and Curtis Force as a receptionist and secretary. She was active in school and church functions at the Immaculate Conception Church. She was a scout leader and a member of the Daisy Chain. Celeste enjoyed gardening, knitting, sailing, cross country skiing and golfing.
She is survived by a son, Dan (Barbara) Bachant of Milan; daughter, Suzie (Larry) Neiderheide of Chase; three grandchildren, Christine (Joe) Quinnan, Bob Bachant and Scott Neiderheide; four stepgrandchildren, Julie, Kristen, Valerie and James Posey; and asister, Jeanette (Earl) Brazeau of Iron Mountain.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Bob, who passed away in 1981 and her sister, Eleanora Shambaugh, who died in July.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Rev. James Hayden officiating. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers, the family asks that contributions be made to the Grand Traverse Pavilions (Cherry Pavilion) in Celeste's name.
Celeste's family also wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Cherry Pavilion for the love and care they gave her over the past nine years.
Victor L. Bartlette, Jr.
Died September 22, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Victor L. Bartlette, Jr., 71, of Traverse City, died Wednesday morning at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Nov. 29, 1927, in Rockford, he was the son of Victor and Rosebert (Brown) Bartlette, Sr. On July 28, 1947, in Norfolk, Va., he married Shirley Lannin.
Victor was a veteran of the U.S. Navy serving in the Korean War. He traveled extensively for his job. He was a service manager for the Cadillac Agency in California and then worked for 13 years as a manager of the Motel 6 motels, retiring in 1989. He was a consultant for the Blair water project and most recently for Earth Tech. in Grawn. Victor was a member of the American Legion Post No. 35 in Traverse City and he enjoyed fishing, woodworking and hunting.
He is survived by his wife; three sons, Richard (Gayle) Bartlette of Interlochen, Gary Bartlette of Simi Valley, Calif. and Harold (Pam) Bartlette of Escondido, Calif.; stepmother, Edith Branch of Lakeland, Fla.; two brothers, Chet (Jo) Bartlette of Grand Rapids and Charles (Dee) Bartlette of Ormasby Bay, Fla.; sister, Delores Barnes of Lakeland, Fla.; 11 grandchildren; and one great-grandson.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Phyllis Sterling.
Cremation has taken place. Graveside memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at Sherman-Mesick Cemetery with Rev. Dean Baily officiating. Military honors will be conducted by the VFW Cherryland Post No. 2780.

MANCELONA - Sharon Irene Briggs, 60, of Mancelona, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born May 30, 1939, in Pontiac, she was the daughter of Carl and Frances (Brooking) Beatty. On March 16, 1957, in Pontiac, she married David A. Briggs.
Sharon was a wife and mother who dearly loved caring for her extended family.
She is survived by her husband, David, of Mancelona; two daughters, Lonna (Henry) Ramsby and Leann (Steven) Winowiecki - both of Traverse City; two sons, David (Mary) Briggs, Jr. and Joseph Carl Briggs - both of Traverse City; two sisters, Marie (Floyd) Robinson of Harrison and Clara (Dennis) Burling of Fair Play, S.C.; ten grandchildren, Kristina, Tammy, David III, Heather, Tyler, Mark, Joey, Hannah, Jason and Miranda; and one great-grandson, Alan.
She was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Rosetta Watson.
Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home with Pastor Greg Ewing officiating. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

GRANDVILLE - Carl B. Cole, 84, went to be with his Lord Thursday at Brookcrest Nursing Home in Grandville.
Born March 8, 1915, in Interlochen, he was the son of F. Bruce and Altha (Davis) Cole. He lived most of his life in Alma and Lakeview.
Carl and his late wife, Norma (Ellison), who died in 1993, were married for 55 years. They had wintered in Light and Life Camp in Lakeland, Fla. for many years. He retired from Consumers Power Company.
Carl is survived by his daughters, Pat Cole of Waukesha, Wis., Alice (John) Eckert of Six Lakes and Wanda (Ed) Gray of Kalamazoo; son, Albert (Mary Lou) Cole of Grandville; 13 grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren; sisters, Arlene Van Brocklin, Enid Ghering and Betty Robbins - all of Traverse City; and brothers, Cal Cole of Traverse City and Jack Cole of Travares, Fla.
He was also preceded in death by his sisters, Altha, Violet and Burdella.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Free Methodist Church in Lakeview with Rev. Ted Johnson officiating. Interment will be in Evergreen Cemetery in Kingsley.

Gladys Annie Hinds

TRAVERSE CITY - Gladys Annie Hinds, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born June 29, 1914, in Kinross, she was the daughter of Otto and Marie Bosse. She attended Fife Lake School, Interlochen Arts Academy and the Detroit Business College.
For several years she worked for the Michigan Department of Rehabilitation in Traverse City and later as a private secretary for local physicians. On Dec. 31, 1949, in Traverse City, she married Orange L. Hinds, Jr., who survives.
Gladys was a church organist and pianist for many years at the First Baptist Church in Traverse City where she taught Sunday School and sang in the church choir. She enjoyed music, reading, traveling, camping and playing golf.
She is survived by her devoted husband; two sons, Daniel (Tracy) of Lansing and Patrick (Betty) of Traverse City; one daughter, Shelley (Steve) Sitzes of Marietta, Ga.; a daughter-in-law, Virginia of Newport, R.I.; and many grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; three brothers; one sister; two sons, James J. and Rockne W.; and a grandson, Timothy.
Visitation will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home. Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.

John Peder Jensen

TRAVERSE CITY - John Peder Jensen, 72, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at his home.
Born Sept. 22, 1927, in Chicago, he was the son of John and Rigmore (Kusk) Jensen. On Sept. 29, 1951, in Elgin, Ill, he married Marilyn Traub.
John served in the U.S. Army Air Corp during World War II. He was employed at Vifa Corp. in Denmark for 12 years in the sales and marketing division and retired in 1996. He also enjoyed golf.
He is survived by a son, Brian, of Brentwood, Calif.; daughter, Lori (Mark) Harvey of Carrollton, Texas; granddaughter, Samantha Harvey; sister, Marion (Wayland) Richardson of Bradenton, Fla.; and two nieces, Linnia Brooks and Johnna Svenson.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at The Presbyterian Church in Traverse City with Dr. Homer Nye officiating. The family will greet friends at the church from 1:30 p.m. until the time of services.

Marguerite I. Primrose

ALBA - Marguerite I. Primrose, 95, of Alba, died Wednesday at Meadow Brook Medical Care Facility in Bellaire.
Born April 21, 1904, in Cross Village, she was the daughter of August and Hulda (Kleinfelt) Engel. On May 17, 1923, in Mancelona, she married Warde J. Primrose. He preceded her in death on Nov. 3, 1984.
Marguerite lived most of her life in Star Township, Antrim County. She was a member of the Reorganized Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints of Gaylord. She enjoyed sewing, knitting, crocheting, hunting, fishing, flower gardening, cooking, reading and snowmobiling. She was known to be 90 years old before she gave up snowmobiling.
She is survived by her two children, Donna M. Centille of Williamsburg and Eugene 'Spike' (Madaline) Primrose of Mancelona; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; one brother, Lewis (Eleanor) Engel; two sisters, Emily Yokom of Portage and Matilda Dawson of Caro; and several nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by one grandson, Allen Primrose, on Aug. 9, 1999.
Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the Paullin-Penzien Funeral Home in Mancelona. The family will receive friends at the funeral home from noon until the time of service Monday. Interment will be in Star Township Cemetery in Alba.

Randal Martin Smith

BUCKLEY - Randal Martin Smith, 49, of Buckley, died Wednesday at home with his loving family by his side.
Born March 13, 1950, in Buckley, he was the son of Carl Petroskey and Florence Smith. He was a lifelong resident of Buckley.
An excellent carpenter, Randal was self-employed. He owned and operated Randy's Construction and was a member of the James E. Dillon Lodge No. 466 A&FM of Mesick. He was also an accomplished musician and singer and played for many years with a local band.
He is survived by four children, Monica O'Dell of Buckley, Jessie Smith of Buckley and Kalee Smith and Brian J. Smith - both of Eaton Rapids; and three grandchildren, Jessica, Alicia and Chelsea Smith.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at Covell-Smith Funeral Home in Kingsley with Rev. Jerrold Hall officiating. A Masonic service will follow.

Charles Cushman Spencer

LOVELAND, Ohio - Charles Cushman Spencer, 78, of Loveland, died Monday at his home.
Born Jan. 16, 1921, in Oak Park, Ill., he was the son of Ralph Cushman and Dorothy (Arndt) Spencer. On March 19, 1943, in Lagrange, Ill., he married Gwendolyn Peterson, who survives.
Charles was a veteran of the Army Air Corps serving in World War II. He was employed by Best Foods as a chemist and retired in 1979.
He is survived by his wife of 56 years, Gwendolyn; three children, Charles and wife Pam Spencer of Grayling, Mich., Barbara and husband Jeff Yearing of Ridgewood, NJ and Bill and wife Debbie Spencer of Cincinnati; six grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 3, at the Church of the Savior, 8005 Pfeiffer Rd, Montgomery, Ohio, with the Rev. Dr. John Dean officiating.

ELK RAPIDS - Dolores L. Youngs, 87, of Elk Rapids and formerly of Lansing, died Thursday at Northwood Village in Elk Rapids.
Born Feb. 18, 1912, in Lansing, she was the daughter of Guy and Willa (Gill) Davidson. On March 31, 1934, in Lansing, she married Alan K. Youngs, who preceded her in death in 1976. She moved to Elk Rapids from Lansing in 1988.
She is survived by two daughters, LaCorda (Richard) Smith of Elk Rapids and Ardis (Bill) McLellan of Charlotte, N.C.; a daughter-in-law, Janice Youngs of Potterville; eight grandchildren, Ron Smith, Don Smith, Doug Smith, Lisa Smith Thomas, Anita Youngs, Amy Youngs, Scott McLellan and Tina McLellan Davis; ten great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandson.
She was also preceded in death by a daughter and two sons, Joyce, Royce and Dale Youngs.

RAPID CITY - Joseph S. Jurko, 68, of Rapid City, died Thursday at his home.
Born May 7, 1931, in Hamtramck, he was the son of John and Feliksa (Maliszewski) Jurko. On Sept. 6, 1980, in Taylor, he married Marilyn Teehan.
Joseph resided in Canton until 1989 when he moved to Kalkaska County. Prior to his retirement he had been employed by Bendix Corporation, Cummings Engine and the Kalkaska Public Schools. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. Joseph enjoyed working in his yard, visiting with friends and neighbors, collecting beanie babies with his grandson, Stephen, and listening to country music.
He is survived by his loving wife, Marilyn Teehan-Jurko of Rapid City; two daughters, Diane Collin of Plymouth and Michelle Laux of Algonac; a sister, Jane Foster of Algonac; and three grandchildren, Stephen Stevens, Erin Collin and Christopher Laux.
No services are planned. Memorial gifts may be directed to Munson Hospice.

TRAVERSE CITY - Niles Edward Simerson, infant son of Michael and Tammi Simerson of Traverse City, was stillborn Thursday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
He is survived by his parents; brother, Logan Gee Simerson, at home, in Traverse City; maternal grandparents, Gaylord and Jan Gee of Traverse City; paternal grandmother, Dorothy (Earl) Underwood of Greenfield, Mo.; paternal grandfather, James (Judy) Simerson of Peoria, Ariz.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
Private services will be held. Burial will be in Oakwood Cemetery in Traverse City.

TRAVERSE CITY - Earl Edward Schleicher, 60, of Traverse City, died Saturday at his home.
Born Oct. 8, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pa., he was the son of Herman and Elva (Pascale) Schleicher. In 1961, in Detroit, he married Mary Ann Zimmerman.
Earl worked as a corrosion specialist for Michigan Consolidated Gas Company for 40 years, retiring in 1998. He served with the Air National Guard from 1959 to 1965.
He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann, of Traverse City; son, Scott Edward (D'Lisa) Schleicher of Howard City; daughter, Laurel (David) Hall of Traverse City; two grandchildren, Karlton Young and Kalynn Young - both of Traverse City; mother, Elva LaFleur of West Bloomfield; an aunt and uncle; and many cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father and his stepfather, Leo LaFleur.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today and 10 a.m. until the time of service on Tuesday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Claude 'Keno' Strzyzewski

FILER CITY - Claude "Keno" Strzyzewski, 84, of Filer City, died unexpectedly Friday afternoon at his home.
Born Aug. 21, 1915, in Filer City, he was the son of the late Joseph and Elizabeth (Fausz) Strzyzewski. On Feb. 10, 1942, at St. Joseph Catholic Church in Manistee, he married Gladys I. Flarity. They had been married for over 50 years before Gladys preceded him in death on May 21, 1992.
Claude served in the U.S. Army during World War II from March 14, 1942 until Oct. 29, 1945. He had been employed with the Packaging Corporation of America in Filer City for 40 years, retiring in 1979. He enjoyed playing cards with his buddies as well as sitting outside his home at the picnic table. Claude was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church of Manistee, a life member of the VFW Walsh Post No. 4499 of Manistee and the St. Joseph Civic Club, also of Manistee.
He is survived by two daughters and sons-in-law, Bonnie and George Lancio of Sterling, Va. and Theresa and Jim Stachnik of Traverse City; two sons and daughters-in-law, Tom and Jean Strzyzewski of Manistee and Jim and Sandy Strzyzewski of Sterling, Va.; seven grandchildren and their spouses, Lori and Justin Girard of South Lyon, Dennis and Andrea Strzyzewski of Ann Arbor, Troy Strzyzewski of Sterling, Va., Keri Niesen of Sterling, Va., Matthew Dietz Niesen of East Lansing and Elizabeth Flarity Stachnik and Hannah Grace Stachnik - both of Traverse City; two great-grandchildren, Alaina and Noah Girard - both of South Lyon; a sister, Verna Minster of Manistee; his brother and sister-in-law, Harold and Bernadine Strzyzewski of Oak Hill; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was also preceded in death by his son, Dennis Strzyzewski, on June 1, 1968.

ROBERT JOHN BECK, 55, of Kaleva, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at West Shore Hospital in Manistee. He was born Jan. 25, 1944, in Wyandotte.

BETTY J. BRAKHOP, 77, of Kalkaska, died Sunday, Sept. 26, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City. She was born Feb. 24, 1922, in New Cumberland, Pa.

ROBERT VANBROCKLIN, 59, of Frankfort, died early Monday morning, Sept. 27, 1999, at his residence.

Robert Haggerty
Died September 25, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Robert Haggerty, 75, of Traverse City, passed away Saturday at his residence.
Born Nov. 26, 1923, in Bay City, he was the son of John and Vida (Winters) Haggerty. In June of 1949 he married June Elizabeth Weiss of Bay City; she died in June of 1979.
Robert graduated from Bay City Central High School and went on to attend Michigan State University and serve in the U.S. Army. He worked as an aerospace engineer for most of his career and retired from Chrysler Corporation in 1979.
In June of 1988 he married Dolores Marion Hintz who preceded him in death in June of 1993.
Robert was greatly loved by many.
Survivors include two sons and daughters-in-law, Michael and Dean Haggerty of Biloxi, Miss., and Thomas and Julie Haggerty of Pinckney; and four grandchildren, Mikie, Deani, Patrick, and Daniel.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 305 Sixth St., Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; Father Edwin Thome of Christ the King Catholic Church will officiate.
Robert will be greatly missed.
Ruth Gilbert 'Aunt Ruth' Horst

FIFE LAKE - Ruth Gilbert "Aunt Ruth" Horst, 85, died Sunday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Jan. 9, 1914, in Sarasota, Fla., she was the daughter of Wade and Bertha (Boston) Blackwelder. On Oct. 15, 1996, in Kalkaska, she married Ralph E. Horst.
Aunt Ruth had lived in Fife Lake for the past 28 years and had worked for the Senior Companions Program for nine years. She was a member of the Fife Lake Post of the American Legion. She was a former resident of Rockwood where she owned and operated Gilbert's Bar and Restaurant for many years.
Survivors include her husband, Ralph, of Fife Lake; a sister, Blanche Higgins of Lakeland, Fla.; two grandsons, Lonnie (Susan) Read of Farmington Hills and Glenn (Tami) Read of Waterford; a niece, Charlotte (Jim) LeFeve of Fife Lake; a nephew, Herbert (Janette) Higgins of Lakeland, Fla.; three great-grandchildren; great-nieces; great-nephews; and many friends.
Aunt Ruth was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Edwin Gilbert; a daughter and son-in-law, Helen and Glenn Read; two sisters; and two brothers.
Graveside services will be held at 2 p.m. today at Riverside Cemetery in South Rockwood.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be directed to the Senior Companion Program.

Thomas A. McMillan Sr.

GRAWN - Thomas A. McMillan Sr., 64, of Grawn, died Sunday.
Born Sept. 9, 1935, in Detroit, he was the son of Harry and Marie (Schneider) McMillan. On Nov. 18, 1972, in Grant Township, he married Evelyn M. Zak.
Thomas served from 1953-1957 in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee during the Korean War. He was a master electrician and belonged to the IBEW Local Union No. 58. A member of Cherryland Amateur Radio Club of Traverse City, his radio number was KB8RDT. He was a life member of the Veterans of Foreign Wars Cherryland Post No. 2780 and the Free and Accepted Masonic James E. Dillon Lodge No. 466 of Mesick. Thomas was also a member of the Buckley Steam Engine Club, Eastern Star in Fort Townsend, Okla., and the Grawn United Methodist Church. He had a lot of wisdom through experience; a skilled craftsman, life was a do-it-yourself project for Thomas. He enjoyed social functions, traveling and camping.
Survivors include his wife, Evelyn of Grawn; four daughters, Janet (David) Johnston of San Diego, Julie McMillan of Rochester Hills, Christine (Kurt) Greenhaw of Sharpsburg, Ga., and Shaun McMillan-Smith (Preston) of Oak Park, Ill.; two sons, Thomas A. (Janet) McMillan Jr. of Saratoga Springs, N.Y., and Shannon McMillan (Kelly Ockert) of Grawn; and five grandchildren, Colin, Michael, Evan, Christian, Darin, and Eric.
Thomas was preceded in death by his parents.
Cremation has taken place.
A gathering of friends and family will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes with a Masonic service at 7 p.m.
Memorial services will be held at 3 p.m. Wednesday at Grawn United Methodist Church.
Memorials may be directed the American Heart Association or Grawn United Methodist Church.

BERNICE M. MAUREN, 80, of Grayling, died Monday, Sept. 27, 1999, at Mercy Manor in Grayling. She was born May 17, 1919, in River Rouge.

Catherine Hobbs Cowie

TRAVERSE CITY - Catherine Hobbs Cowie, 96, of Traverse City, died Sunday at Bortz Health Care of Traverse City.
Born Feb. 17, 1903, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of William John and Flora Agnes (Campbell) Hobbs, a pioneer family of the Grand Traverse area. On July 3, 1937, in Traverse City, she married A.D. Cowie.
A public school teacher, Catherine taught in Lansing, Lakewood Junior High in Lakewood, Ohio and the Traverse City Junior High in Traverse City, retiring in 1966. She was a long time member of First Congregational Church and a life member of the Eastern Star. Catherine enjoyed knitting, traveling and gardening.
She is survived by her husband; daughter, Catherine Anne (Alfred J.) Kuhn of Hammond, Ind.; son, William Andrew (Kimberley) Cowie of Tucson, Ariz.; six grandchildren, Al Kuhn, Jr., Thomas Kuhn, Patricia (Kuhn) Maier, David Kuhn, Christopher Cowie and Alexander Cowie; and five great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Donald C. Hobbs, Henry R. Hobbs and Parker Hobbs.
Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday at the First Congregational Church in the Howard R. Towne Chapel in Traverse City with Rev. Gary Hogue officiating.
Memorial contributions may be directed to Rehab Unit in care of Munson Medical Center.

TRAVERSE CITY - Helen Kidnie, 92, of Traverse City and formerly of Cadillac and Grosse Pointe, died Saturday, Sept. 18, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
She is survived by her husband, Raymond Kidnie of Traverse City; daughter, Gail Matthews of Fife Lake; grandchildren, Randy Matthews of Lansing, Renee (Mark) Calabrese of Chicago, Richard "Rick" Matthews of Lainsburg and Tami (Tony) Behland of Chicago; and great-grandchildren, Serena, Zane, Jaclyn and Erin.
Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Pavilion's Chapel in Traverse City with Rev. Emmy Lou Belcher officiating and also at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 9, at the Grosse Pointe Unitarian Church with Rev. Adam Tierney officiating.

FRANKFORT - Robert VanBrocklin, 59, a lifetime resident of Benzie County, died unexpectedly Monday morning at his residence.
Born Feb. 22, 1940, in Beulah, he was the son of R.C. Henry and Ida Ellen (Gunderson) VanBrocklin. On Aug. 9, 1960, at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort, he was united in marriage to Marlene Townsend.
Robert had worked for the past 28 years as a machinist for Frankfort Manufacturing. He had many interests including football, being outdoors, bowling, gardening, mushrooming, hunting and collecting coins and crystal. But what gave him the most enjoyment were his grandchildren whom he loved very much.
He is survived by his wife, Marlene, of Frankfort; son, R.C. (Marie) VanBrocklin of Frankfort; two daughters, Bobbi Jo (Rick) Fast of Honor and Lisa (David) Royal of Iowa; seven grandchildren; his mother, Ida Mix of Frankfort; brothers, Henry (Claudia) VanBrocklin of Elberta, Tom (Gisele) Mix of Ada and Chuck (Barb) Bugleski of Grand Haven; four sisters, Zelda (John) Hodge of Frankfort, Janice Brown of Frankfort, Zora (Frank) Pelky of Honor and Joan (Tim) Thomas of Traverse City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his father; stepfather, Lawrence Mix; brother, Ladon G. "Don" VanBrocklin and brother-in-law, Fred Brown.
No visitation is planned. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Frankfort with Pastor Rick Stieve officiating. Burial will take place in the Crystal Lake Township North Cemetery.

NEWBERRY - Donald D. Edinger Sr., 58, of Newberry, died Tuesday at Helen Newberry Hospital.
Born Dec. 3, 1940, in Detroit, he was the son of Paul Eugene Edinger Sr. and Esther Bell (Link) Edinger. On July 19, 1997, in Benzonia, he married Yvonne M. Eley.
Formerly of Honor, Donald was known as an excellent master mason. He enjoyed woodworking, hunting, fishing, gun collecting, bird watching and classic country music. He also loved his cat "Fluffer."
He is survived by his wife, Yvonne; children, Donald D. (Marilyn) Edinger, Jr. of Traverse City, Sondra D. (Brian) Halliday of Oxford, Victoria K. Edinger of Texas and Esther A. (James) Racus of Texas; stepchildren, Linda (Charles) Herman of St. Joseph, Tenn., Sherry (Robert) Grose of Interlochen, LeRoy (Sharon) Gary of Interlochen, Sally (Happy) Wahmhoff of Kingsley and Murman (Nancy) Gary of Parsons, Kan.; mother, Esther B. Edinger; brothers, Gordon Edinger, Walt Edinger and Gary Edinger - all of Honor; half-brothers, Paul Edinger of Florida and Tom Edinger of Union Lake; sisters, Georgie Ulberg of Thompsonville and Paulette Abshire of Honor; 35 grandchildren; and 12 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his father; brother, Otto and daughter-in-law, Kim Edinger.

Robert Dale Gribble
Died September 10, 1999
AMES, Iowa - Robert Dale Gribble, 57, former Traverse City resident and business leader, died of cancer on Friday, Sept. 10, in Ames.
Originally from Brownsville, Pa., he lived in Traverse City from 1989 to 1993. Robert served as executive director of operations for the Sara Lee Bakery Corporation in Traverse City and worked for the Sara Lee Corporation for nearly 20 years. Most recently, he was executive director for Uncle B's Bagel Bakery in Ellsworth, Iowa. Earlier in his career, he worked for the United States Federal Government's Naval Research Laboratory and the Goddard Space Flight Center on the design of the first lunar landing space module and NASA's space shuttle. Robert held an associate degree in mechanical engineering. He also lived in Washington, D.C., New Hampton, Iowa, Jackson, Miss., Greenville, S.C., Chicago and Ames.
Robert served as New Hampton city councilman and president of Greenville's Chamber of Commerce. He was on the board of directors for the South Carolina Manufacturer's Association, appointed to the Governor of Mississippi's prestigious Business Development Task Force, an avid coach for the Annandale Boys Club Soccer League and a high school basketball referee. He won numerous professional, civic and community awards for his contributions and he was a member of the Masonic Lodge.
Robert is survived by his wife, Sherry; his parents, Thomas and AnnaMae Gribble of Hibbs, Pa.; a brother and sister, Tim Gribble of Belle Vernon and Rindy McDowell of Hibbs; a daughter, Laurie Powers McCulley of Alexandria, Va.; three sons, Robert Gribble, Jr. of Washington, D.C., David Powers of Alexandria, Va. and Tony Gribble of St. Louis, Mo.; and two grandchildren, Matthew and Ryan Gribble.
A memorial service was held on Tuesday, Sept. 14 at the Bethesda Lutheran Church in Ames. In accordance with Robert's wishes, his remains were dedicated in a private ceremony at his farm in Fort Atkinson, Iowa.

Victorine Leona Knopf

ACME - Victorine Leona Knopf, 79, of Acme, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Dec. 8, 1919, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Victor and Francis Guest and in 1939 married Neil Leonard Knopf in Detroit. They moved to Acme in 1964.
Victorine owned and operated the Willow Beach Cottages for 35 years and was the Acme Township clerk for 24 years. She was a member of the Acme Women's Club and a former member of Eastern Star. She loved flowers, gardening and enjoyed painting.
She is survived by a daughter, Noelle Knopf of Acme; son, Neil (Carolyn) Knopf of Traverse City; three sisters, Delores (Charles) Spicer of Detroit, Loretta Hawkinson of Farmington and Shirley (Donald) Storm of Arlington, Texas; three grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her husband; parents; and great-grandson, Jonathon M. Sommerfield.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Dr. Daniel K. Herlein officiating. Burial will be in Acme Township Cemetery.

Stanley Joseph Niewiadomski

WHITE CLOUD - Stanley Joseph Niewiadomski, 59, of White Cloud, died Monday at Gerber Memorial Hospital in Fremont.
Born April 30, 1940, in Grand Rapids, he was the son of Stanley Joseph and Rebecca (Andrews) Niewiadomski.
Stanley owned and operated Acme Office Equipment in Traverse City for 18 years. He then retired to White Cloud where he loved to hunt and fish. He was greatly loved and touched many lives with his charm and sense of humor. He was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the Grand Traverse Band of Ottawa and Chippewa Indians.
He is survived by his children, Pam (Pete) Pikaar of Jenison and Jeff (Nan) Niewiadomski and Lauri Niewiadomski - both of Traverse City; six grandchildren, Kristi and LeAnn Pikaar, Jenny and Josh Niewiadomski and Ashley and Marissa Niewiadomski; two sisters, Garn Patten and Diane Vandersteldt of Grand Rapids; three brothers, Michael of Buchanan, Charles of Grand Rapids and Gerald of Six Lakes; a special friend of 14 years, Jana Lederle; and many nieces and nephews.
He was preceded in death by his parents and a brother, William.
A Mass of Resurrection will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday at St. Joseph's Catholic Church, 955 Newell St., White Cloud, MI.
Hazel L. Roush

TRAVERSE CITY - Hazel L. Roush, 95, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Aug. 21, 1904, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Fred and Minnie (Lambert) Strait. On Nov. 29, 1922, in Traverse City, she married Wilson "Pete" Roush, who preceded her in death on Jan. 4, 1976.
Hazel worked several summers at Cherry Growers. She was a longtime member of Pinegrove Church of God and a former member of Farm Bureau. She was an avid gardener and enjoyed quilting, crocheting and her large family.
She is survived by 11 children, Harry (Opal) Roush of Empire, Esther (Earl) Plowman of Empire, Robert (Mary) Roush of Traverse City, Lewis (Marcella) Roush of Traverse City, Harold (Sharon) Roush of Central Lake, Francis (Barbara) Roush of Hartford, Hellen (Harold) Bush of Traverse City, Leonard (Dorothy) Roush of Traverse City, George (Pat) Roush of Traverse City, Jane (Howard) Rinehart of Traverse City and Floyd (Kaye) Roush, also of Traverse City; 63 grandchildren; 102 great-grandchildren; 16 great-great-grandchildren; a brother, Thomas Strait of Traverse City; a sister, Margaret Tharp of Traverse City; and many nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by four children, Louise Fasel, William, Alfred and Donald Roush.
