Dr. David Allen Plamondon
Died October 12, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Dr. David Allen Plamondon, 42, a native of Traverse City and Optometrist, entered his heavenly home Tuesday when his loving, caring, and generous heart succumbed to a heart attack. Our lives will forever be changed without him and he will be dearly missed by everyone whose life he touched.
David was born April 13, 1957, in Traverse City, to Dr. Thomas and Viola (Bunek) Plamondon. He was truly a gift from God, and so graciously shared his gifts with others. As a child, David's generosity began to blossom. He never turned his back on anyone in need. He could fix or assemble almost anything and was frequently called on to use his talents for friends and family. David could have been a success at any profession, but chose to follow in his father and brother's footsteps as an Optometrist. After graduation from St. Francis High School in 1975, David received a bachelor of science degree from Ferris State University in 1979 and his eye doctor degree from Illinois College of Optometry in 1983. David worked with his father and brother as an Optometrist at Plamondon Eye Clinic in Traverse City. On Oct. 1, 1996, he set up his practice at Bay West Eye Care where he continued to help visually challenged people see again. He and his family were so proud of his accomplishments as his optometry practice flourished.
David loved all outdoor activities, including hunting, fishing, snowmobiling and especially boating with his family. He loved spending time at the family cottage, which helped him relax after a hard weeks work. On May 18, 1985, at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City, he married Maggie Valeriano. David cherished his wife and daughter Monique, and spent many enjoyable times with them. He was a loving husband, father, son, brother, friend and health care worker. He was able to cheer anyone up with his wonderful sense of humor and joking around. David was a member of the Michigan Optometric Association and St. Francis Catholic Church.
He is survived by his wife, Maggie, of Traverse City; daughter, Monique, at home; parents, Dr. Thomas and Viola Plamondon; sister, Carolyn Plamondon Gloss (Ron) of Traverse City; brother, Dr. Thomas L. Plamondon (Annmarie) of Clearwater, Fla.; two nieces, Janelle Gloss and Callie Gloss - both of Traverse City; a nephew, Lane Plamondon of Clearwater, Fla.; and many aunts, uncles and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Ovilla J. Plamondon and Mamie (Martineau) Plamondon and John (Mary) Bunek; and twin brother and sister, Joseph and Joan Plamondon, who died shortly after birth.
Dr. David truly lived the Beatitudes; his reward will be great.
Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are the meek, for they shall possess the earth.
Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be consoled.
Blessed are they who hunger and thirst for justice, for they shall be satisfied.
Blessed are the merciful, for they shall obtain mercy.
Blessed are the clean of heart, for they shall see God.
Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called children of God.
Blessed are they who suffer persecution for justice' sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.
Blessed are you when men reproach you, and persecute you, and speaking falsely, say all manner of evil against you, for my sake.
Rejoice and exult, because your reward is great in heaven.
Visitation will be held from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. Sunday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Monday at the church. Burial will follow in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Lake Leelanau.

Merry Lou Yacks
Died September 22, 1999
GREAT BEND, Kansas - Merry Lou Yacks passed away Sept. 22 at the age of 44.
She was born Dec. 31, 1955, and lived in Benzie County, Mich. for her first 30 years. She then moved to Kansas where she went to beauty school and opened up a beauty salon where she did artwork on finger nails and the latest hair styles.
Three years ago she was diagnosed with cancer and the doctors gave her the shocking news that she only had six months to live. She closed her beauty salon and entered a program in Washington with the Cancer Research Center. She applied for Social Security but for some reason she was denied.
Merry had so many friends and family that all helped her maintain some kind of life. Through all of this they could still count on Merry for a smile, a joke, anything positive. She never complained - no matter how bad things got. Merry's baby sister took care of her, her bills, her everything.
Her brother remembered, "Andrea, you are an Angel. The rest of the family did all that we could from so far away.
"Six weeks ago we got the news that the cancer had come back and that there was nothing more that could be done. Merry did have some time to make her peace with God. She was very happy to have the chance to be saved.
"We all went to visit her one last time. Saying good bye to someone so young and so strong was so very hard. The whole time Merry, you smiled and told us to be strong, that you had lived a good life and now you were going to see our Mother and brother whom went to Heaven first.
"Merry it has only been a few days and God we miss you.
"By the way your first Social Security check arrived shortly after your passing. Sorry that you had to go knowing that you had to lose everything, including life to finally be approved but you still went smiling.
"Merry, I promise you that our fight here is not over. I will spend every moment that I can with pen in hand trying to make sure that things are changed. So instead of dumping money into the third world, maybe we could dump a little on the elderly and the sick, so they may go in peace with some dignity.
'Thanks Merry for the memories, we love you and miss you."
She left behind two sons, Scott and Steven; two brothers, Barry and Jim; three sisters, Wanda, Linda, and Andrea; her father, Harold; half sisters, Lois Ann, and Chris; and many, many friends. Her family thanks them all so very much.
Merry was preceded in death by her brother, Barney, and her mother, Helen.
Funeral services were held in Great Bend, Kansas. She was cremated and the remains were sent back to Michigan.
There will be a little graveyard service at 2 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 23, at Champion Hill Cemetery in Honor. Her remains will be spread out on what was her favorite hilltop as a child.
