Obituaries

LARRY L. GRAY, 55, of Williamsburg and formerly of Ft. Myers, Fla., died Thursday morning, Dec. 9, 1999, at the home of his aunt.
      Arrangements are pending at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Homes, Benzonia.
     
      ALBERTA M. JOHNSON, 78, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Dec. 8, 1999, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      No services are planned. Final interment will be in the Onekama Village Cemetery. Arrangements were handled by The Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee.
     
      ROBERT S. LANGDON, JR., 54, of Yorktown, Ind., died Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999.
      Visitation will be from noon until 8 p.m. Sunday at Elm Ridge Funeral Home in Muncie, Ind. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home.
     
      Matthew John Konold
      Died December 7, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Matthew John Konold, 74, of Traverse City, died Tuesday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born July 31, 1925, in Warren, Ohio, he was the son of Matthew John and Bess (Jamieson) Konold. In 1951, in Detroit, he married the former Sally Stonehouse.
      Matthew graduated from Leelanau schools in Glen Arbor and Michigan State University. He worked with Belfour-Stulen Company for many years and retired as a computer program workshop instructor with Grand Traverse Project. Matthew was an expert at photography and computers.
      He is survived by four children, Katherine Hill of Ishpeming, Mary Rupert of Lake Leelanau, Ann LaBonte of Traverse City and John Matthew Konold of Kokomo, Indiana; seven grandchildren, Ben and Sarah Rupert, Andrew and Tom Hill, and Abe, Daniel and Bess LaBonte; and former wife, Sally, of Traverse City.
      No services are planned at this time. Arrangements by Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay.

      Verle L. Mason
      Died December 9, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Verle L. Mason, 73, of Traverse City, died Thursday at the home of his daughter in Apopka, Fla.
      Born May 14, 1926, in Ionia, he was the son of Glen and Leah (Wilder) Mason. On Dec. 27, 1947, in Belding, he married the former June L. Tallman.
      Verle served in the U.S. Army/Air Force. He worked as a field underwriter for Auto Owners Insurance for 35 years and has resided in Traverse City since 1956. He was a member of Mayfield Chapel and enjoyed golf. His friends greatly appreciated his sense of humor.
      He is survived by his wife, June, of Traverse City; two daughters, Heather Lee Mason of Traverse City and Debra Kay Mason of Apopka, Fla.; and two sisters, Maxine Foltz of Lansing and Connie Everest of Marion.
      He was preceded in death by his parents; and two brothers, Lyle and Lee Mason.
      Cremation has taken place. Memorial services are being planned for the spring at Mayfield Chapel with Pastor Glen Walters officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mayfield Chapel.
      Arrangements are being handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Marion E. Moyer
      Died December 7, 1999
      BEAR LAKE - Marion E. Moyer, 72, of Bear Lake and formerly of Branchville, N.J., died Tuesday in Arcadia.
      Born Sept. 8, 1927, in Branchville, N.J., she was the daughter of James and Sara (Crone) Hamm.
      Marion will be missed and long remembered by her friends at the Methodist Manor in Branchville, especially Ruth Trezona.
      She is survived by her sister, Jean Lewis of Branchville, N.J.; and her nieces and nephews, Lee Blahnik of Elberta, Wendy Bouwkamp of Traverse City, Denise Crellin of Greentown, Pa., Roger Hamm of Branchville, N.J., Carl Katzenstein of Baton Rouge, La., Jeff Lewis of Branchville, N.J., Amy Miller of Jacksonville, Fla., Toni Moran of Onekama, Tim Moyer of Union, N.J., Lydia Orr of Branchville, N.J., Carla Jean Sievert of Arcadia and Michelle Stahovec of Sharon, Conn. Marion is also survived by her special grandniece, Sara Smith of Hawley, Pa.; and numerous other grandnieces and grandnephews.
      She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Donald Moyer, in 1997; and her nephew, Jerry Katzenstein, earlier this year.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Sunday at the Wood Funeral Home in Branchville. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Monday at the funeral home. Interment will be in Branchville Cemetery.
      Anyone preferring to make a donation in the memory of Marion Moyer in lieu of flowers is asked to consider Munson Hospice, 1105 Sixth Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.
      Local arrangements were handled by the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.

      George B. Whitehead
      Died December 8, 1999
      WILLIAMSBURG - George B. Whitehead, 73, of Williamsburg, died Wednesday at his home.
      George served in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Formerly of Lansing, he retired as a bank officer from the Bank of Lansing.
      He is survived by his wife, Marjorie M. Marsh Williams Whitehead of Williamsburg; five children, Zetta Zechinato, Martha Mae Babcock, Brent Williams, Kristine Miller and Marta Campbell Mrva; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; one niece; and three nephews.
      No services are planned at this time. Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice, 1105 6th Street, Traverse City, MI 49684.

      Kenneth Dillon Young
      Died December 8, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Kenneth Dillon Young, 79, of Traverse City, died quietly early Wednesday morning at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City after a long illness.
      Kenneth was born May 5, 1920. He had made his home on Glen Lake since his retirement from business in 1985. He was widowed twice, first by the death of his first wife, Charlotte, with whom he had two children and later by the loss of his second wife, Karen.
      Kenneth, a fourth generation Chicagoan, grew up in that city, and was educated in the Chicago public schools and the University of Chicago High School. He matriculated at Purdue University but dropped out after the United States entered World War II. He enlisted in the Navy and served in the Pacific Theater on the USS Indiana and the USS Bennington, achieving the grade of Radar Technician First Class before being demobilized in 1946. He returned to college and graduated from Purdue with a bachelor of science degree in engineering in 1948.
      He is survived by his brother, Bruce, of Cedar Key, Fla.; his son, Kenneth Arden Young, who, with his wife, Anne, own and operate a business in Traverse City, and by five grandchildren, Melissa, Michelle, Michael and Nicole Young and Mark Ingold of Muskogee, Okla.
      He was also preceded in death by his daughter, Janet Ingold.
      At Kenneth's request, there will be no visitation or funeral service.
      Arrangements are being handled by Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
