FRANKFORT - Hilda Appelhof, 91, a resident of the Maples Medical Care Facility in Frankfort, died Friday.
Born Feb. 12, 1908, in Leeds, England, she was the daughter of Harry and Bessie Whiteley. Hilda immigrated to Ferndale with her parents when she was three years old. On Feb. 4, 1930, she married Rev. Gilbert Appelhof, Jr., who was a pastor of St. Lukes Episcopal Church in Ferndale, where Hilda was president of the young people's group. The major parishes in their ministry were St. John's Episcopal Church in Alma and St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Berea, Ohio.
During her long active life as the wife of an Episcopal minister, Hilda was noted and loved for serving as a gracious hostess at events known for good food, interesting people and stimulating conversation. A highlight in her life was attending the 58th General Convention of the Episcopal Church in Hawaii in 1955 as a delegate.
Hilda provided opportunities for adult education before it was ever a formal means for learning. Two projects spanning a period of several years in Berea included a prayer group in which she taught the women participants how to braid rugs, then arranged for purchasing over 1200 pounds of wool to meet the demand created by the enthusiastic braiders. Her leadership in such group facilitation was recognized by her appointment as worship chairman of the Episcopal Church Women of the Diocese of Ohio in 1961. In another adult education activity, Hilda conducted furniture-refinishing classes in the garage behind the rectory.
Upon their retirement, Gil and Hilda moved to their log cabin at Crystal Lake in Beulah. Hilda was active in the Benzonia Garden Club and was once state chair of the Environmental Committee of Federated Garden Clubs of Michigan. Hilda was preceded in death by her husband who died in 1987.
She is survived by a daughter, Mary Appelhof of Kalamazoo; and two sons, David (Diane) Appelhof of Minneapolis and Alan (Joanne) Appelhof of Beulah. She is also survived by three grandchildren, Gregory Appelhof, Lee Ann Vincent and Diana Riekse; and six great-grandchildren.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. Sunday at the Perry Chapel, McElduff Funeral Home in Benzonia. Graveside services for the family will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at the Benzonia Township Cemetery, where burial will take place. A Celebration of Life memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at the First Congregational Church of Benzonia with Rev. Stephen Davidson officiating.
