Obituaries

JACK R. DE MORROW, 77, of Central Lake, died Saturday, Dec. 25, 1999, at Grandvue Medical Care Facility in East Jordan. He was born Dec. 29, 1921.
      Graveside services will be held in the spring at Marquette Woods Cemetery in Stevensville. Arrangements are by the Central Lake Chapel of Mortensen Funeral Homes.
     
      G. Robert 'Bob' Dixon
      Died December 22, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - G. Robert "Bob" Dixon, 90, of Traverse City, died Wednesday at Munson Medical Center.
      Beloved husband of Erma for almost 70 years, Bob was a teacher and school superintendent in northern Michigan before moving to Detroit to join the Ford Motor Co. in 1935. He assisted in the launch of the Willow Run Bomber Plant and retired from Ford Production Control in 1970.
      A member of Grant First United Methodist Church, he became a Master Mason, Olive Branch Lodge in 1943. He also became a member of Scottish Rite and Shriner in 1972 and a life member of Grand Lodge F&AM in 1983. Bob was a past president of Cherryland High Twelve Club and of Michigan High Twelve. He served as a trustee of High Twelve International and was the 1991 Mason of the Year, 1993 Shriner of the Year and member of the DeMolay Legion of Honor. He was a strong supporter of the Buckley High School basketball team.
      Bob is survived by his wife Erma, of Traverse City; two sisters, Katherine and Marjorie; and three brothers, Buell, Morley, and Roger.
      He was preceded in death by his brother, Bill.
      Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes; a candlelight Masonic service will be held at 7 p.m.
      Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Wednesday at the funeral home; the Rev. Craig South will officiate.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Masonic Lodge No. 222, the Traverse City Shriners Club, or Buckley High School.
     
      Carl Oleson
      Died December 25, 1999
      GLEN ARBOR - Carl Oleson, 82, of Glen Arbor, died Saturday at Maple Valley Nursing Home.
      Born June 17, 1917, in Toledo, Ohio, he was the son of Carl A. and Lucy (Andreson) Oleson.
      Carl was in the U.S. Coast Guard from 1939 to 1947. Two and one-half years were spent in the southeast Pacific during World War II where he received three Bronze Stars for his valor. Carl served during the battle of Guadalcanal and the invasion of Bougainville for approximately three and one-half months; he ran landing barges off attack transports. He was also stationed in South Haven and Charlevoix and at the Grand Traverse light house.
      Fishing, hunting and home were his main interests. He was the owner and operator of the Sportsman Shop in Glen Arbor for 31 years. Many vacationers credited him with making their trips successful.
      Carl was chairman of the board of education at Glen Arbor prior to consolidation. He was president of the PTA and member of the fire department. He was also chairman of the Fish and Game Committee of the Glen Lake Business and Resort Bureau and of the Glen Lake Association.
      Survivors include his wife, Ruth of Glen Arbor; a son, Carl Oleson III (Jackie) of East Lansing; three daughters, Sharon (Don) Shaw of High Springs, Fla., Sandra Zemaitis of Grand Rapids, and Candace Oleson of Glen Arbor; four grandchildren, Kim (Greg) Guilbeau, Shannon (Alan) DuBose, and Richard and James Zemaitis; and two great-grandchildren, Ross and Max Guilbeau.
      Carl was preceded in death by his parents, a sister, Lois, and a brother, Robert.
      Visitation will be held from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Glen Lake Community Reformed Church; funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. The Rev. Stephen Wing will officiate.
      Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery in Empire.
      Memorials may be directed to Glen Lake Community Reformed Church or the charity of one's choice.
      Arrangements are by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Frederick Conrad Schneider
      Died December 24, 1999
      LAKE LEELANAU - Frederick Conrad Schneider, 92, of Lake Leelanau, died Friday at Leelanau Memorial Health Center.
      Born May 30, 1907, in Marion, he was the son of Charles and Katherine (Hollinger) Schneider. On June 28, 1928, in Lake Leelanau, he married the former Elizabeth Mary Dufek, who survives.
      Frederick was a farmer and owned a bait shop and gas station. During World War II he worked in Willow Run in a defense plant. He loved to fish and hunt and at one time worked for the DNR. He shot his last deer just three years ago. Frederick was a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau. He and his wife will be fondly remembered for Schneider's Garden in Lake Leelanau which they ran for 17 years.
      Besides his wife, he is survived by two sons, Michael C. (Lena) Schneider of Frankfort and Milford C. (Grace R.) Schneider of Lake Leelanau; 12 grandchildren; and 25 great-grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by a grandson, Anthony; and a son, Willard.
      Friends may call from 1 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Martinson Funeral Home in Suttons Bay, where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau with Rev. Jerry Hunko serving as celebrant. Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to St. Mary's School.
