Obituaries

SAMUEL T. DUMONT, 85, of Benzonia, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      No services are planned at this time. Arrangements are by Hibbard Funeral and Cremation Service of Traverse City.
     
      FRANCES 'FRANK' KORR, 78, died Tuesday, Dec. 28, 1999, at his home in Alden.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at Penzien Funeral Homes, Inc. in Mancelona; a prayer service will be held at 7 p.m. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Anthony Catholic Church in Mancelona.
     
      OLGA M. LAYCOCK, 95, of Maple City, died Wednesday, Dec. 29, 1999, at Maple Valley Nursing Home in Maple City.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City is in charge of arrangements. A full obituary will run at a later date in the Record-Eagle.
     
      DOROTHY SOVA, 47, of Interlochen, died Monday, Dec. 27, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. today at Reedemer Lutheran Church of Interlochen. Arrangements are by Smith Family Funeral Home and Cremation Center of Harrison.
     
      Ronald J. Breithaupt
      Died December 23, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ronald J. Breithaupt, 92, a lifelong resident of Traverse City, died Thursday at Munson Medical Center.
      Born Dec. 25, 1906, in Traverse City, he was the son of Christian M. and Eleanora (Huff) Breithaupt.
      Known as a very hard worker with a very strong work ethic, Ronald had been the manager of shipping for Cherry Growers prior to his retirement. He had been a member of Trinity Lutheran Church since 1944.
      On June 2, 1927, in Traverse City, he married Juanita M. Waldron who preceded him in death on Jan. 21, 1993.
      Ronald was also preceded in death by his sons, Charles and Ronald Jr., and his parents.
      Survivors include his children, Niles D. (Inza) Breithaupt, Robert L. (Blanche) Breithaupt, and Joan (George) Phillips - all of Traverse City; two grandsons who were raised by Ronald and his wife, Arthur (Jackie) Breithaupt of Virginia and James (Kathy) Breithaupt of Traverse City; 14 grandchildren; 38 great-grandchildren; and four great-great-grandchildren.
      Memorial services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at Trinity Lutheran Church; Pastors Donald Engrebretsen and C. Jay Koehler will officiate.
      Interment will be in Oakwood Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to Trinity Lutheran Church or Trinity Lutheran School.
      The family is being served by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home.
     
      Thelma M. Gray
      Died December 19, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Thelma M. Gray died Sunday, Dec. 19.
      Born May 31, 1918, in Kingsley, she was the daughter of David J. and Ada May (Pollock) Gray.
      A lifelong resident of the Traverse City area, she came to the David Netzorg family as an adult lifetime companion.
      Her devoted extended family included Margaret and George Schubering of Osprey, Fla.; Susan, Tom, and Madeline Flynn of Fairfield, Conn.; and Rebecca, Jack, Sarah, and Grant McNaughton of Columbus, Ohio. They all loved and adored Thelma who loved them like her own children.
      Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City is in charge of arrangements.
     
      Jewell D. Passmore
      Died December 28, 1999
      GARFIELD TOWNSHIP - Jewell D. Passmore, 60, of Garfield Township, died Tuesday at her home.
      Born Feb. 26, 1939, in Portsmouth, Va., she was the daughter of Victor Leslie and Eunice May (Onley) Hayden.
      Jewell was a member of the Christian Missionary Alliance in Portsmouth. She attended Trinity College in Clearwater, Fla. She had been a resident of the Traverse City area since 1967. An avid reader, Jewell enjoyed crafts and was especially fond of spending time with her children and grandchildren.
      Survivors include her son, Michael L. (Lisa) Passmore of Madison Heights; a daughter, Kimberly A. (Tony) Ghering of Traverse City; a brother, Wilford (Kay) Hayden of Vancouver, Wash.; a sister, Virginia Ripperger of Hertford, N.C.; two grandchildren, Cameron Ghering and MacKenzie Passmore; and many nieces and nephews.
      Jewell was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Donna Lynn Passmore, in October 1964, five brothers and two sisters.
      Friends may call from 10 a.m. to noon Friday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Services will follow at noon; Dr. Gary Hogue will officiate.
      Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens in Traverse City.
      Memorials may be directed to Munson Hospice, the Diabetes Association, or the American Cancer Society.
     
      Ralph 'Deke' Tompkins
      Died December 21, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Ralph "Deke" Tompkins, 72, of Traverse City, died Tuesday, Dec. 21.
      Deke had been a winter resident of Briny Breezes, Fla., for 12 years. He was a veteran of World War II.
      Survivors include his wife, Marie; sons, David (Mitzi) of St. Joseph, Dean of Marquette, and Douglas (Patrice) of Traverse City; three brothers; three sisters; and four grandchildren.
      Memorial services were held Thursday in Briny Breezes. Arrangements were by Babione-Stephenson Funeral Home of Lantana, Fla.
