Obituaries

ELINOR A. BREEN, of Manistee, died Tuesday, Nov. 2, 1999, in Manistee.
      A memorial Mass will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday, Nov. 4, 1999, at Guardian Angels Catholic Church in Manistee. Arrangements are being handled by Johnson Funeral Home, P.C. in Manistee.
     
      EDWARD KRUSE, 83, of Manistee, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at Manistee County Medical Care Facility.
      The family will receive friends from 2 to 4 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Friday at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 9 a.m. Saturday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Manistee.
     
      FRED P. ZENKER, 90, of Benzonia, died Wednesday, Nov. 3, 1999, at The Maples in Frankfort.
      A memorial service will be scheduled at a later date at Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Benzonia.
     
      Ronald Mark Bauer
      Died October 30, 1999
      BLYTHE, Calif. - Ronald Mark Bauer, 41, of Blythe, Calif. and formerly of Traverse City, died Saturday in Blythe, Calif.
      Born April 16, 1958, he was the son of Robert and Joyce (Broadway) Bauer of Traverse City. He was employed at a recycling station and enjoyed recreational biking.
      He is survived by his parents; three brothers, Robert (Jackie) Bauer, Jr. of Ann Arbor, Roger (Carol) Bauer of Traverse City and Randy Bauer of Williamsburg; and three special nieces, Michelle, Iris and Yohanna; and one special nephew, Cory.
      Visitation will be at 10 a.m. Monday followed by a memorial service at 11 a.m. at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City with Susan Larned officiating.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to the Father Fred Foundation.
     
      Elaine M. Gabriel
      Died October 28, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Elaine M. Gabriel, 81, of Traverse City, died Thursday, Oct. 28, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Born Jan. 26, 1918, in Ecorse, she was the daughter of Alvin R. and Josephine (Basista) Salliotte. On Dec. 30, 1944, at St. Francis Cabrini in Ecorse, she married Arthur P. Gabriel.
      Elaine attended St. Joseph's College in Hartford, Conn. She assisted her husband in his dental office for 54 years. She was a member of Christ the King Catholic Church and Michigan and Wisconsin Dental Assistant's Associations. Elaine enjoyed playing piano, tennis and singing in the church choir.
      She is survived by her husband, Dr. Arthur P. Gabriel of Traverse City; three daughters, Mary Louise (John) King of Scottsdale, Ariz., Connie Reak of San Jose, Calif. and Colleen (Craig) Donovan of Deforest, Wisc.; one sister, Marjorie White of Allen Park; two brothers, Thomas (Dorothy) Salliotte of Ecorse and Donald (Eddie) Salliotte of Lincoln Park; five grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
      A funeral Mass was celebrated at noon on Saturday, Oct. 30, at Christ the King Catholic Church with Rev. Edwin Thome serving as celebrant. Entombment was held at Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Christ the King Catholic Church in Acme in care of Rainbow Fund.
      Arrangements were handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Geraldine L. Hofmann
      Died November 2, 1999
      WATERFORD - Geraldine L. Hofmann, 79, of Waterford, died Tuesday.
      Born in Novi, Geraldine lived most of her life in Grosse Pointe Woods and Traverse City before moving to Waterford's Lakeland Place in 1992.
      She was married to her beloved husband, Walter, for 62 years and mother to Anne (William) Eames. She is also survived by grandsons, Thomas Garthe and Timothy (Emily) Garthe; great-grandchildren, Savannah, Haley and Timothy, Jr.; brother, Robert (Marian) Hammond; sister, Mill Horsfall; and sister-in-law, Irene Kitson.
      Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. today at Huntoon Funeral Home, 855 W. Huron (M-59) just east of Telegraph. A funeral Mass will be held at 9 a.m. Friday at St. Benedict's, 80 S. Lynn, Waterford, followed by interment at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery.
      Memorials may be directed to American Heart Association.
     
      Robert Lone
      Died October 27, 1999
      DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - Robert Lone, 76, formerly of Beulah, Mich., died Wednesday, Oct. 27, in Daytona Beach where he lived since his retirement in 1976.
      Robert was the superintendent of the Honor schools from 1958-1962. He was selected to be the superintendent of the Benzie County Central Schools when all the schools in the area were consolidated into one school district. He served as the school superintendent from 1962-1969 until leaving to take another position as school superintendent for the Brighton area schools in Brighton, Mich.
      Robert is survived by five children, Robin of Brighton, Kerry of Dexter, Jon of Vintondale, Pa., Derek of Benzonia and Matthew of Traverse City.
     
      Jack Skinner
      Died November 2, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Jack Skinner, 75, of Elk Rapids and Okeechobee, Fla., died Tuesday at Birchwood Nursing Center in Traverse City.
      Born Sept. 26, 1924, in Traverse City, he was the son of Percy and Nina (McNeil) Skinner. He married Irene Edson, who preceded him in death.
      He is survived by a daughter, Danielle (John) LaParr of Buckley; a son, Herman (Marion) Ruth of Hanceville, Ala.; several grandchildren and great-grandchildren; and a sister, Martha (Bernie) Greenhoe of Jacksonville, Fla.
      He was also preceded in death by his parents; and a son, Michael.
      A memorial service will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 10, at Birchwood Nursing Center.
      Arrangements were handled by Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
     
      Gertie C. Webster
      Died November 3, 1999
      WILLIAMSBURG - Gertie C. (Thompson) Webster was born Oct. 13, 1914, to Ray and Ethel (Craner) Thompson in Greenwood Township near Manton. Gertie married George E. Webster on Oct. 4, 1938. They recently celebrated their 61st wedding anniversary at their home in Williamsburg. She died on Wednesday, Nov. 3, in Traverse City.
      Gertie worked as a nurse at Munson Hospital for many years. She was an avid gardener and especially loved her flowers. Gertie was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed knitting, crocheting and quilting. She spent most of her life as a devoted wife, mother and grandmother.
      Gertie is survived by her husband, George; daughters, Janis Webster and Carolyn (Frank) Tompkins; grandchildren, Michael (Sue) Tompkins, Perry (Debbie) Tompkins, Valerie Williams, David (Jodi) Williams, Marcia (Paul) Ellul and Heidi Williams; nine great-grandchildren; her brother, David Thompson; sister, Evelyn Drown; sister-in-law, Phyllis Thompson; cousins, Dale Craner, Lila Craner, Faith Craner, Marcia Smith and Jerry Craner; and a brother-in-law, Leonard Webster.
      She was preceded in death by her parents; her uncle, Oscar Craner; granddaughter, Vonnie Williams; stepmother, Myrtie Drown and her brother, L.D. Thompson.
      Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home with Rev. Daniel Biteman officiating. Burial will be at Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
      Memorials may be directed to either the nursing program at NMC or Cherryland Humane Society.
