Obituaries

LARRY HENCY, 61, of Kingsley, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      A memorial service will be planned at a later date. Arrangements are being handled by Covell-Smith Funeral Home of Kingsley.
     
      WILLIAM OLIVER NELSON, 42, of Kaleva, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, unexpectedly at his home. He was born Dec. 24, 1956.
      Memorial services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 27, at the Terwilliger Funeral Home in Kaleva.
     
      JOHN PAUL NITZKE, 72, of Traverse City, died Saturday, Nov. 20, 1999, at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
      Arrangements are pending at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
     
      Virginia Barbara McLean
      Died November 18, 1999
      TRAVERSE CITY - Virginia Barbara McLean, 82, of Traverse City, died Thursday at Grand Traverse Pavilions.
      Born Oct. 1, 1917, in Traverse City, she was the daughter of Frank and Emma (Houdek) Stanek. On April 20, 1943, in Traverse City, she married Glenwood E. "Shorty" McLean, who preceded her in death on Feb. 8, 1990.
      A lifelong resident of Traverse City, Virginia was employed as a sales clerk for the Cradle to Teen Shop, retiring after 16 years. She was formerly employed by the Lyric Theater and Treasurers Office in City Hall. Virginia was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church, Co-Redemptorist and Election Board Worker, Precinct No. 3.
      She is survived by a daughter, Sue (Richard) McLean Helm of Fishers, Ind.; a son, Steven McLean of Traverse City; grandson, Eric McLean of Traverse City; and a sister-in-law, Mary Jean (Robert) Boone of Wyoming, Mich.
      Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; one brother, Lawrence Stanek; and a sister, Margaret A. Knapp.
      Friends may call from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Monday at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City where a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Tuesday at St. Francis Catholic Church with Rev. William Lipscomb serving as celebrant. Burial will be in Oakwood Catholic Diocesan Cemetery.
      Memorial contributions may be directed to Mass intentions, St. Francis Catholic Church or Carmelite Monastery.

      Earl R. Narum
      Died November 19, 1999
      ELK RAPIDS - Earl R. Narum, 73, of Elk Rapids, died Friday.
      Born Nov. 24, 1925, in Wheaton, Minn., he was the son of Rev. Hartvig and Constance (Grangaard) Narum. On June 26, 1953, in Detroit, he married Mary E. Schuyler
      Earl served in the U.S. Navy. He attended and played football at University of Colorado. He moved to Elk Rapids in 1988 from Sylvania, Ohio. He was employed at Allis Chalmers in Milwaukee, Wis. and Detroit for 20 years and later was employed at General Electric in Detroit and Toledo, Ohio for 20 years. Earl was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids, an Elder and member of the church 's choir. He was also a member of the Rotary and the Elk Rapids Golf Club. He enjoyed playing bridge, fishing and tennis and was involved in community service throughout his life. He was a loving husband, father and grandfather.
      He is survived by his wife, Mary; three children, Christine (Scott) Eberle of Buffalo, New York, Lynn (Tom) Kellenberger of Boulder, Colorado and Frank (Kathy) Narum of Boulder, Colorado; brother, Paul (Joy) Narum of St. Paul, Minnesota.; and eight grandchildren.
      He was preceded in death by his parents.
      Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. Monday at Elk Rapids Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes. Memorial services will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at First Presbyterian Church in Elk Rapids with Rev. Dr. Dan Herlein officiating. Burial will be in Maple Grove Cemetery.
