      Rev. Samuel Wainwright Cook D.D.
      Died November 22, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Rev. Samuel Wainwright Cook, D.D., 79, of Traverse City, died Monday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Samuel was born Oct. 1, 1920, in Minneapolis, Minn. Son of Louis G. Cook and Gertrude E. Cook, he attended Edison High School in Minneapolis where his father was principal and went on to the University of Minnesota and Macalester College, where he graduated in 1943. Following World War II, he earned a Master of Divinity degree from Seabury Western Theological Seminary in 1948. In 1958, he and his wife took their young family to England, where he pursued further master's study for a year at the Central College of the Anglican Communion-Canterbury. In 1978, Sam was awarded an Honorary Doctor of Divinity degree in pastoral counseling from Seabury Western. Over his long and distinguished career with the Episcopal church, he had three parishes: St. Martin's in Minnetonka Beach, Minn. (which he was instrumental in building from a mission into a church), St. Mary's in St. Paul, Minn. and Calvary in Rochester, Minn. In 1986, he returned to St. Martin's as associate pastor for ten years before retiring and moving to Traverse City. A listing of Sam's diocesan and parish initiatives and positions held during his years with the church would fill many pages. He had great energy for the work of building his parishes and he gave tirelessly to people who needed his help, his advice, or his loving and supportive presence.
In his secular life, Sam was proud to be a member of Rotary International for over 30 years, serving as president of the Rochester Rotary in 1971. He was also a member of the Minnesota Interprofessional Club and served as president in 1990. He continually looked for ways to volunteer in community work, always eager to reach out to others.
Sam was in the Navy in World War II, commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1943. He participated in the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944, at Omaha Beach and later was in the pacific for the invasions of Okinawa and the Philippines. He returned to the states in 1946 and married Barbara Atwood Barnwell in the Church of the Ascension in New York City on June 6, 1946.
Sam was a man who was deeply rooted in his faith and always looked for the good in others. He would greet strangers with an easy smile and a good word, making friends everywhere he went. He taught us all that being a pastor meant tending to the everyday needs of his congregation, family and friends. He deeply loved his family and took great joy in all of their efforts. His love and concern for others was tireless, and he always seemed to call or to be there when he was needed, offering an encouraging word or gesture. He believed in the healing power of touch and the need for unconditional love. He teased, winked, and laughed his way into our hearts, drawing us out of ourselves into bursts of laughter and happy recollection, and into his clever and playful humor. He loved to fill the moment with his favorite jokes and stories, and he enjoyed playing the musical saw. No matter what he was doing, he always seemed to have time for his loved ones. He offered lots of compliments and was the least judgmental man that most of us will ever know. On the last day of his life, Sam was ministering at a nursing home in Traverse City.
Sam is survived by his wife, Barbara Cook, of Traverse City; his sons, Stephen (Michele Fallon) Cook of Minneapolis, Minn. and David (Deborah) Cook of Edina, Minn.; and his daughters, Katharine (Bruce) Douglass of Traverse City and Elizabeth Cook of Boise, Idaho. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Justin and Evan Cook, Sara Cook and Andrew and Christopher Douglass, as well as sisters, Katharine Orwig of Berea, KY and Carolyn Skinner of St. Paul, Minn.
He was preceded in death by his daughter, Margaret Cook; his parents; his sisters, Virginia Cook and Helen Jones; and his brother, John Cook.
Visitation will be held from 5 to 7 p.m. Friday at the David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata, Minn. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Martin's By The Lake in Minnetonka Beach, Minn.
In lieu of flowers, memorials are preferred.
Local arrangements were handled by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home of Traverse City.
