The Rev. Father David D. Ball
Died November 26, 1999
NORTHPORT POINT - The Rev. Father David D. Ball, 66, of Northport Point and La Jolla, Calif., died Friday at Munson Medical Center in Traverse City.
Born Oct. 18, 1933, in Evanston, Ill., he was the son of Kathleen (Fleming) and Edward Hyde Ball.
Father David attended Saints Faith, Hope and Charity school and New Trier High School in Winnetka, Ill., and, later, Mundelein Seminary. He was ordained a Catholic priest in 1960 and became the chaplain of Angel Guardian Orphanage in Chicago.
He was commissioned a U.S. Navy chaplain in 1968 and served the Navy and U.S. Marine Corps for 22 years at Camp Lejeune, N.C., Norfolk, Va., Newport, R.I., the Panama Canal Zone, Okinawa, Japan, and San Diego. He retired from the Navy in 1990.
While not on duty, Father David spent as much time as possible at his cottage at Northport Point.
Survivors include a brother, John F. Ball of Greenwich, Conn., and a sister, Kathleen Ball Crain of Winnetka, Ill.
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gertrude Catholic Church in Northport; a Scripture service will be held at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at noon Wednesday at the church; the Rev. Father James Gardiner will serve as principal celebrant and Archbishop Edwin F. O'Brien will be the homilist.
Arrangements are by Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City.
