Obituaries
DAVID L. ARKWRIGHT, 41, of Eastlake, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, unexpectedly at home.
Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Herbert Funeral Home in Manistee. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday at the Calvary Baptist Church in Manistee. Burial will be in Trinity Lutheran Cemetery, also in Manistee.
ROBERT H. BALLARD, 84, of Elmira, died Tuesday, Oct. 26, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Grayling.
The family will receive friends from 2 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday at the Penzien Funeral Home of Mancelona. Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at the funeral home.
VIRGINIA J. KILDEE, 74, of Traverse City, died Monday, Oct. 25, 1999, at her home.
Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. with a scripture service at 7 p.m. Thursday at Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be held at 11 a.m. Friday at St. Francis Catholic Church. A complete obituary will appear in Thursday's edition of the Record-Eagle.
ARLO RALPH SHAW, 69, of Wellston, died Saturday, Oct. 23, 1999, at West Shore Hospital in Manistee. He was born Sept. 13, 1930, in Dansville.
Memorial services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at the First Church of Wellston, in Wellston. The Terwilliger Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements.
Helen T. Nida
Died October 25, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Helen T. Nida, entered eternity on Monday. She was 79 and suffered from advanced dementia and CHF. Her husband, Edmund, preceded her in death on Feb. 15, 1993.
Born July 4, 1920, in Detroit, she was the daughter of Rose (Wardzinski) and Michael Nosewicz, one of seven children.
She is survived by her sister, Sophie Paja of Wixom; and brothers, Frank of Northville and Zigmund of Bradenton, Fla. Helen lived her entire life for her husband, her children and her extended family and friends. Her only organizational affiliation was her church, she was a devout Catholic.
She is also survived by her four children and their spouses and ten grandchildren; Gary Nida and daughter Kelsey of Denver, Nancy and Richard Marks and their children, Brad, Lisa and Lauren of Palatine, Ill., Sharon and Charlie Janis and their children, Max, Amber and Laura of Traverse City and Anita and Larry Nida and their children, Nick, Andrew and Brent of Commerce Township.
The progression of her illness brought with it, a surrogate daughter and caregiver, Linda K. Brewer, who Helen loved and cherished. The St. Francis stands will be a little quieter without the strong and compelling voice of Helen's cheering, "Go Glads!" She will be completely and dearly missed by those who knew and loved her. Helen briefly volunteered at the Father Fred Foundation of Traverse City to which memorials may be directed.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. with a Rosary at 7 p.m. today at the Reynolds-Jonkhoff Funeral Home in Traverse City. A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 3 p.m. Thursday at St. Francis Catholic Church in Traverse City. Internment will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at Holy Sepulcher Mausoleum in Southfield.
Clara S. Swartout
Died October 25, 1999
BEULAH - Clara S. Swartout, 78, of Beulah, died Monday at her residence in Homestead Township.
Born Dec. 25, 1920, in Detroit, she was the daughter of John Peter and Stella (Musialowski) Roza. On Oct. 14, 1939, at St. Johns Catholic Church in Dearborn, she married James Albert Swartout, who preceded her in death in 1999.
Clara was a member of St. Raphael Catholic Church in Copemish and had worked for the Interlochen Arts Academy for over ten years as a housekeeper. She enjoyed metal detecting on Crystal Mountain, playing bingo and spending time with her family, especially her grandchildren.
Clara is survived by six children, Donna Jean (Larry) Rector of Westland, James (Eileen) Swartout, Jr. of Lake Leelanau, Georgette (Jack) Sika of Traverse City, Susan (Bill) Husby of Traverse City, Julia Swartout of Royal Oak and William (Rose) Swartout of Hamilton, Ohio; ten grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; three sisters, Josephine Chlipala of Indian River, Gertrude Kraft of Dearborn Heights and Helen Stephens of St. Petersburg, Fla.; her brother, George (Jan) Roza of Dearborn Heights; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was also preceded in death by a son, Donald Swartout in 1974; and four sisters, Irene Spires, Lillian Roza, Stella Waske and Margaret Finney.
Visitation will be from 3 to 5 p.m. and 7 to 9 p.m. today at the Bennett-Barz Funeral Home of Beulah with a Rosary service at 8 p.m. A Mass from the Order of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Frankfort with Monsignor David Gemuend serving as celebrant. Interment will be in Homestead Township Cemetery.

Elizabeth Mary 'Betty' Wakulat
Died October 25, 1999
TRAVERSE CITY - Elizabeth Mary "Betty" Wakulat, 87 of Traverse City, died Monday at her home, surrounded by her loving family.
She was born on Aug. 23, 1912, in Plamondon, Alberta, Canada. In April 1917 her family moved to Traverse City, remaining until 1929. They then moved to Lake Leelanau where she graduated from St. Mary's Catholic School, Lake Leelanau in 1930. She graduated from Northport, Leelanau County Normal in 1931. Betty attended the University of Michigan and then Central Michigan University where she received her teaching certificate. A teacher for Leelanau County rural schools for three years, she taught at Cherry Knoll for two years and at Traverse City St. Francis Elementary School for 11 years. Betty also worked for the Federal Emergency Relief Administration teaching music and organizing and conducting small orchestras as part of a recreational program. In 1967 she accepted a position as medical social worker at Munson Hospital, becoming its social services director until her retirement in 1974.
She and her husband developed their former Old Mission Peninsula orchard into what is now known as the Panaview subdivision. She enjoyed traveling, bridge and her women's clubs. Betty was deeply involved in her Catholic faith, and prayed the Liturgy of the Hours, in accordance with her status as a member of the Carmelites. She was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church since 1937, she was also a member of the Secular Order of Discalced Carmelites, a charter member of the Archie Jr. Women's Club, a life member of the Daisy Chain No. 2 - being named member of the year in 1964, and a member of the Our Lady Discussion Club.
On Oct. 9, 1934, she married Richard H. Wakulat at St. Mary's Catholic Church in Lake Leelanau; he died July 5, 1991.
Betty is survived by a daughter, Mary Beth Wakulat of Gaylord; a son, Richard H. (Patsy) Wakulat M.D. of Charlevoix; grandchildren, Paul J. (Kelli) Wakulat, Carrie A. Wakulat, Elizabeth A. Wakulat; four great-grandchildren; her sisters, Albertine Sawyer and Dorothy (Morris) Kolarik; a brother, Joseph (Lorraine) Lamie; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; an infant son; her sisters, Barbara Jean Lyon and Mary Jane Gromek; and her brothers, Paul W. Lamie, Donald E. Lamie, and Richard Lamie.
Visitation will be held 2 to 4 p.m. and 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at St. Francis Catholic Church and a Rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m.
A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. Thursday at the church; Father James Gardiner will serve as celebrant.
Burial will be in Grand Traverse Memorial Gardens.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Grand Traverse Area Catholic Schools, Carmelite Monastery, or Munson Hospice.
Arrangements are being handled by the Traverse City Chapel of Covell Funeral Homes.
