TRAVERSE CITY The truth: Prep sports seasons in the state of Michigan are changing. Volleyball has moved to the fall and is replaced in the winter by girls basketball. Boys tennis and girls golf are also now in the fall while their gender counterparts are in the spring. The consequences: Some players are being forced to make decisions, including three of the top returning players from the Traverse City West girls golf team that placed fourth in the state this spring.

Coach and general manager Scott Gardiner resigned from his position and Traverse City businessman Steve Fournier has assumed majority ownership of the franchise.

The former Traverse City Central standout was introduced Monday as the school's fifth women's basketball coach. Merchant, 37, succeeds McCallie, who took the Duke job earlier this month.
